New to Aperture, Mac and unsure...

...about the age-old "managed vs. referenced" dilemma. I'm seeing many of the pros and cons of letting Aperture 3 manage my photos vs. managing them myself and referencing them with the software. What I'm not clear on is whether there is any way--using either method--to delete a master image (not just a version, and not just an image in an Aperture library but the original imported image) via the Aperture 3 interface. There's a "delete master image and all versions" command under the edit menu but that does not, in fact, delete the master image, at least not as I'm defining "master image." So at the moment, it seems to me that the only way to truly rid my system of a picture that I don't want after it's been imported is to delete versions via Aperture and then go to the source file in Finder and delete the original. Which seems to be much easier when Aperture is NOT referencing my files.
So am I missing something? Why would Apple offer up "delete master image" if the command leaves the master on the machine?
Any advice would be appreciated. Trust me when I say that I've read plenty on this forum and others but haven't found answers that jibe with what the software is doing on my machine. I should add that I'm running a trial version of the software, but I can't imagine (correct me if I'm wrong) that it behaves differently than an activated version.
Thank you!

Well how you define the master image is a bit moot. Aperture defines the master image as the file that is imported, in it's orginal state - no edits, changes whatever. And - regardless of whether you opt for managed or referenced - you can delete that master image via Aperture.

  • Hello, i am new to the mac and i need to learn how to re image using an external hard drive

Hello, i am new, like baby fresh new,...lol, to the mac and i need to learn how to re-image using an external hard drive.

How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

  • New to the Mac and need a little help!

I recently upgraded our pc in the house to windows vista. Before the upgrade I could use remote desktop to access the files on a shared drive. Now I cannot. Any help would be appreciated.
I am using a mini Mac with 10.4.9 on a 1.873 core duo mini.
Using remote desktop on XP allowed me to access and move files from a shared D:\ drive that Vista will not allow me to see. HELP??? the drive used to be accessible through the finder.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'm a little confused, are you running the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection software on your Mac mini under Mac OS X? So, after the upgrade to the PC, the Mac mini can no longer connect with the same software? So your question is actually about how to re-configured Windows Vista settings so the drive is available again to the Mac client?

  • I am new to the Mac and have a stupid Question

So I am not really this stupid but would love it if someone could tell me how to remove a program.
I downloaded some driver software in order to set me up onto the network printer at work. Along with that software came some sort of device locator for which I have no need nor patience. The file name is "com.brother.ControlCenter.plist" and the program name is "Brother Control Center Ver. 2.4.3"
I have deleted the file from the program list, I have changed the preferences of the program to try and disable it from launching at start up. I have drug it into the trash on the desk top and emptied the trash immediately after and through all of this my nemesis continues to launch at start up and then prompt me for a device choice.
Please tell me how to completely remove this program file.
    Thanks

  • New to Aperture: keywords and icons

Hello, although i'm not a pro photographer, I decided to switch from iPhoto to Aperture (thanks to the cheaper price Aperture now has on the app store).
I have imported one of my iphoto libraries, the main one with travel pictures, and I have a couple of doubts.
    1) How can I remove or hide the keyword bar that appear on each and everyone of my photos? (see attached pic for reference). http://dl.dropbox.com/u/112449/19809023848234/aperture.png
    2) What do those icon on the right bottom corner of the photo mean?
For everything, I'm really loving Aperture.. it's great and doesn't have all those tiny limitations I kept on finding in iPhoto.
    Thanks.

    1) How can I remove or hide the keyword bar that appear on each and everyone of my photos?
View menu -> Metadata Display -> Show Metadata
    2) What do those icon on the right bottom corner of the photo mean?
That one means there's a keyword attached to the shot. There are a few others. They're explained in the mnual.

  • How do I go about setting up my new wireless all-in-one Epson XP-215 printer to my MacBook Pro? The system is not automatically detecting the printer ad the furthest I get is "System" keychain user and pswd but I am a new user to Mac.

I am a new user to Mac and trying to set up an Epson XP-215 All-in-One printer without any success. The Mac Book Pro is not recogising the Printer automatically and when following the instructions to add the printer, it gets as far as a display box for teh user and password for "System" Keychain but I am not sure what info to add there...
The printer is meant to have a function calle dAir Print also that is meant to be used for Mac but I cannot figure out any of this! Why would the MacBook Pro not automatically pic up the printer? Please help...

  • New to mac and cant install D link disk

Hi, I am new to the mac and I have an imac. I am trying to get the internet up yet when I insert the dlink router disk, and modem disk they comes up blank. I click on the disk image and takes me to a bunch of files I cant open. The installer wizard should appear but it takes me to documents from the disk.
    HELP!!!!!

D-Link does not directly support Macs, so the disc you have is most likely only usable on Windows machines.
Setting up such a router usually has to be done using your browser. Follow the instructions in the router's user manual on configuring the router directly from a browser.
You may be able to access the documentation on the disc if it's in PDF or text format.

  • New to Mac and CS4

I am new to both Macs and CS4. I just got a Mac, and today I was installing CS4Master Suite. There are 4 Application disc, and they loaded ok. There is a 5th disc, which is labeled "CONTENT". When you pop it in, no pop up window tells you where or how to install. This is where I need your help and expertise.
    Thanks

Content is just files and extra plugins and such. Don't worry about it now. go ahead and familiarize your self with the apps. Once you start using apps you will begin to understand what these extras are for.
You do not need the contents of the DVD to make the applications work. although you might want to use the images to play with photoshop if you don't have any of your own.

  • Am new to using a mac and was wondering

Am new using a mac and was wondering is it normal that my macpro restarts more then once at the gray screen of an update?? HELP?

Try the MacBOOK Pro forums / the Snow Leopard OS section about updates.
And my guess is, No it is not normal.
Updates go through a couple of phases to download, prepare, and then do install. Finally getting more like Windows which is a safer method.
You might want to do a Safe Boot before and after the update is done (not on the first restart when applying)

  • I backed up my iPhone and then did a sync and the iPhone is missing photos and so is my Mac and my phone will not let me delete them or on my iMac either.

So I bought a used Mac from my friend. I have the udated software and an iPhone 5 with the newest software. I have backed up my phone at least 4 times and all the photos and videos I need and wanted were on the phone. I did a backup and synce last night to itunes and now my phone has random old photos on it and I can't remove them or delete them. I also tried to restart iphoto and uninstall it and now it asking me to buy it for my Mac. I looked in the library for the photos and they are not there and used the preview option for it. Don't know how to recover or find them on my Mac. I have to have these photos for a company meeting and can't reproduce. Since the new updates with Mac and iPhone with the OS7 it has been really wierd and NOT working right. Also something to point out is that the events on my phone show up for the folders but they don't show up on my mac and didn't before. They only show up as dates but on my phone show as names that gave them. Help please! My presention is on the line. I've not been happy when I made the switch to everything apple.

I went back to iOS 7 and my backup file is restoring but when its done nothing is on my phone still and only takes 11-15 minutes to restore the backup instead of taking 25+ minutes like usual so I guess the backup is corrupted. How can I fix this?

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • I need to deny the use of usb devices on MACs and Macboks for non admin users. Can this be done?

I am new to MACs and have been tasked with providing new users with Macs and MacBooks. I have been told that the CIO does not want the users to be able to transfer data from the machines to any devices via the usb port, but to allow the support staff the use of the same usb ports.
I thought of just changing permissions and allow only the administrators access, but am not sure if this would work.
Help!! lol... I need to do this "YESTERDAY" as my CIO would put it.
    Thanks for your help!

Your CIO is asking the wrong question. What about FireWire ports? What about AirDrop? However, if you need to go through the motions of placating him, search for "Removing USB Support Software" in this document:

  • Importing masters from iPhoto to Aperture 3 and saving as referenced files on external drive

I'm making the move from iPhoto to Aperture 3.I'm new to Aperture 3 and want o make sure I am importing and saving correctly. So far, I have imported my library of events from iphoto to Aperture 3. I understand that for the most part, it makes sense to house this library on an external drive as "referenced files" vs within Apeture as "managed files." I'm not clear on exactly how to accomplish this set-up. Is this something I should have set-up when doing the initial import or can I move the files now? Once this is done, when importing new files, how do I import to Aperture 3 but save on external drive?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    A fabulous answer:
In the olden days ( ) when hobbyists made their own telescopes from kits, everyone wanted a six-inch lens, and the kit makers shipped six-inch lens blanks.  Which the hobbyists used to learn lens grinding.  Which is arduous and requires skill.  Which the hobbyists didn't have until they'd ground that six-inch blank -- an expensive piece of high-quality material at the time -- into a lumpen flawed approximation of a good lens.  Then the hobbyists would contact the kit makers and ask for another lens-blank, so they could build their telescope.  At which point they would drop the project because the six-inch lens blank cost so much.  And much calumny was rained on the kit manufacturers.
Now the kit manufacturers wanted to promote a hobby, and make, in addition to telescope kits, money (not calumny), so they together and separately hit upon the idea of supplying the hobbyist with _two_ lens blanks: a four-inch blank, and a six inch blank.  Nobody wanted a four-inch telescope -- but that's not what the blank was for.  The instructions read (I've shortened this part) "Grind the four-inch blank into the most perfect lens you can.  Check it and re-check it.  Now throw it out.  You likely now have the skill to grind the six-inch blank into a useable lens."
    Thus endeth our fable.
The point, of course, is:  start small and gain skill before committing time and material to a task.  Port just a small sub-set of you photos into Aperture.  Experiment with it.  Try different workflows.  Think about how to best use the containers and organization tools Aperture provides.  Develop a long-term naming convention for files and Projects.  Work out a back-up strategy that is scalable and that you will stick with.  My specific recommendation for beginners is: don't worry about Referenced v. Managed at first.  Make all your Masters Managed.  When you have your four-inch Aperture Library all smooth and even, put the entire thing in the system trash -- and then you can start working on an Aperture Library fit for your photos -- one that will allow you to see far, and clear, for years.
    Good luck.

  • Aperture 2 and iPhoto

    Hello,
Does anyone know if when you import iPhoto pictures into Aperture 2, does Aperture copy over the originals into the Aperture Library, or does it just create thumbnails in the Aperture Library.
What I am trying to determine is whether or not Aperture creates another copy of the iPhoto images or just references them in the iPhoto library.

    Thanks for the response.
When I launched the iPhoto Browser in Aperture and then drag an event into Aperture, it creates a new project and then looks like it generates thumbnails as well. So it look like dragging from the iphoto browser to Aperture copys the files as apposed to reference them. I verified this by right clicking on the new project Aperture created and clicking on "Manage Referenced files" and got a response that there are no referenced files.
I wonder if there is a way to select to keep files in their original location.
What I am tryin to accomplish is to maintain all originals in iPhoto and let Aperture reference them. That way Time Machine can maintain the backup database from iphoto instead of maintaining a seperate backup through Apertures Vault.

  • How can I install Aperture on my new Macbook Pro. I am up to date with my Mac Pro, I have the Aperture 1 and installation disks but cant remember how I got to 3. Can anyone help?  Many thanks regards Alf

I have an up to date version of Aperture on my Mac Pro, and I would like to install it on my new Mac book Pro. I have the original installation disks for Aperture 1 and 2. I cant remember how I got to Aperture 3, I think it was via a web download but not sure. I have checked my purchases in the App Store but there is no indication of me buying an upgrade to Aperture 3.
Ive tried to download it from the App Store but it wants me to pay again.
Can anyone help on how to install Aperture 3 on my new Macbook .
    Many thanks regards  Alf

Then you can download the Trial version of Aperture 3 and unlock it with your serial numbers - you will need all three for all three versions: A current link to the Trial version is in this support document, also instructions on how to reinstall on different systems:

BTW: Your Aperture 3 serial number will be displayed in the "About" panel - the panel you see, when you use the command "About Aperture" from the Aperture menu in the main menu bar.
