New user account - safari just keeps quitting silently

Hello,
I create a new standard user account, restart the machine, log in to the new user, open Safari, and, well frst, no window appears, I have to ask for a new Safari window. Then as I'm changing something in preferences Safari crahes/dissapeared (the little white blob is no longer there under Safari), with no message about that. I open it up again, same thing repeats. Why would a new account not work like this? Thanks.

anyone?

  • Adding a new user account or just sharing one account?

Hello - looking for the best practice with this - my wife has an old PC laptop which is nearing the end of its life. She will probably just share my iMac with me. If so, her photos will be imported into iPhoto and her iTunes library will have to be migrated over. She also has an iphone with her own set of contacts in it. Three questions for folks out there who have multiple users on their macs:
    1. Would it be best if she just had her own account on the mac or can we just share one account?
    2. If we go the route of two separate accounts, will Time Machine be able to backup this new account?
    3. Can one iTunes library and one iPhoto library be shared across two separate accounts?
    Thank you.
    Steve

    1. It is usually best to have two separate accounts.
    2. Yes.
    3. Possible, but usually simpler to maintain separate libraries.

  • Setting up a new user account without apps

    Hi there
Ok here's a little backgorund to help you all out first. I have had the computer since November. I bought it as a Refurb model. In December I got an Elgato diversity with Eyetv. I have had numerous problems with this (one where my whole os had major system crashes. I have sorted that out by zeroing the disk and re-installing. EyeTv just has never been the same since. SO I have contacted Elgato and I have followed there instructions to the letter T. The final instruction is to open a new user account to check for software clashes.
This obviously needs a totally new user account opening without anything from my admin account being installed on the new user.
I have tried to do this through system prefs and add new user, but it just keeps sharing all my apps and prefs.
So how do I go about creating this "Fresh user account"?
Duo Core 1.66ghz mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   2gb RAM

    pod meister,
quite as yr office person says. It would be wrong to remove all the apps. I would not be sure what ElGato can mean when they say the test user has no apps!. Elgato (?) will need to use some apps for it's normal operation, and the more general user functions will as well. You would msee in yr 'Parentalo controls, in sys prefs pane that there are 'helper apps' that you can allow or not to any controlled user. So there are helper apps.
You can 'turn off' lots of system extensions with a special boot up but won't Elgato need some of them? It is after all the operation of Elgato that you want to test.
The usual dodgy 'apps' are starup items like so called haxies which moderate certain basic system operations. You could start by disabling the.
You might care to consider that Elagto is shoveling the blame onto 'the rest of the world' saying it 'is something else',but I may be wrong.

  • Creating a new user account with identical files/settings as previous one

Google chrome has crashed on my mac pro and i can not get it back working. i have created new user account and chrome is working in it. i now want to transfer all my files and settings to the new user account, not just the files but if possible an identical copy of how my original user profile was set out. Can anyone advise me on how to do this? thanks

While logged into the troubleshooting account (assuming that it's an admin account—if not create a new one and log into it), backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.
See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4703015 for more details on this process.

  • Safari and Chrome will not display some pages right for new user account

Not sure this is a Safari issue actually. Behavior is also in Chrome, but not Firefox. If I need to post elsewhere please advise.
24"imac running 10.5.8. 2gb ram, software update run,
Setup a new user account. Machine will have 2 users.
When I login as the new user, in both Safari and Chrome, some pages - google, ebay, amazon, cnn, yahoo, do not display correctly. Mainly empty space, a few graphics all wrong. They do display correctly in Firefox.
I assumed it was the user. So I added a 3rd user. Same behavior. Tried giving the new user admin rights. Same problem.
For the admin account, everything's fine on those pages, both in Safari and Chrome.
It feels like the new user is not getting access to something it needs, but it also feels like more than a font problem. Thanks for any suggestions. Dan

Thanks for your thoughts. Here's what I've learned. The browsers display correctly for the new user after SafeBoot. I removed all startup items, to no avail. Removed all fonts from the new user account, nothing. Removed all fonts from the admin user's library, nothing. Then I removed all fonts from the HD library, and that fixed it for the new user. Now I just have to figure out which one it was.
So in summary, a bad font in the HD library was affecting Safari and Chrome (but not Firefox) in new user accounts, but not in the admin user's account. Nice. D

  • Hi, I hope someone can help.... When I open a new user account, which I want to set parental control on, the screen keeps freezing once the account is open. The wee rainbow circle appears and I can't do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Hi, I hope someone can help.... When I open a new user account, which I want to set parental control on, the screen keeps freezing once the account is open. The wee rainbow circle appears and I can't do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Report any errors it found for Disk Repair, don't need the ones for Permissions Repair.
Try it again & see if anything changed, but have Activity Monitor open & Show All Processes & sorted on CPU%, also have Console open if we can... maybe not when switching, but we'll see.
Does this happen if you just try to create a new admin user???

  • Login page keeps going to "Create new user account" on login

For about 3 weeks, whenever I log in, the next page I get is nearly always the "Create new user account" page. This happens regardless of whether I wait to let AutoFill enter my user name and password or whether I fill in the correct info myself.
When I click the back button on my browser and finally arrive at the page with the forums list, I'm always registered as logged in. But sometimes I just end up back on the login page with a blank entry box.
How do I get to the forums page without having to get out of the "new user account" page first? (While this isn't a huge problem, it's time-wasting and kind of annoying, and it didn't used to happen.)

    Hi Turtlewiz!
Have you tried deleting your browser cache & cookies?
    Good Luck!

  • Why is a new user account created every time I upload files from my old PC. Can't you just use the same user account all the time?

I'm a new Mac user and am finding my way slowly around it. One question: why is a new user account created every time I upload files from my old PC?

Because you're using the Migration Assistant, and it can't migrate data to an existing user account. Transfer everything at once or use a different method.

  • Creating a new user account and curious log in behavior...

First off I'd just like to apologize if that is not the correct place to be posting this, but after looking around I don't see a perfect fit for this topic anywhere, so I figured here should be okay. Also I want to apologize if this turns out to be a rather lengthy post, I just want to ensure that I supply all info...
Okay, so about a month ago I recognized that my current user account is slowly but surely taking longer and longer to "boot up" after I put in my password and tell it to log in. What usually happens is that I click log in, the background image and taskbar almost immediately pop up but nothing else (finder icons, dock, and the multiple icons in the taskbar which include the airport signal, user name, bluetooth status, battery strength, volume, and my iChat and Adium status) the only things to immediately "activate" in the taskbar are the clock and spotlight.
As of late when I log in something especially strange is happening in that after the 5 or so minutes it takes the dock, rest of taskbar, and finder icons to appear my PB will play the default Apple sound of me emptying trash, rather there is anything actually in the trash or not. It dosen't delete the objects in the trash (if any, as I usually keep it empty), just simply plays the sound. I'm not sure if it playing this sound ties in any with the lagging log in times, I just wanted to mention it as the log in times have slowed down considerably since this sound started.
Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account. Actually I have already created the new account (by the way, it logs in literally instantaneously, and does not make the strange trash being emptied sound) but was looking for info on how to get all of my files from one account to the other. Unfortunately for me everytime that I install a program and the dialog box pops up asking if you want to install it on all user accounts or just the current one I always click "just the current one" (please don't ask why, as there is seriously no reasoning to this at all...), so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling??? It's actually not that many programs I'm talking about here (Shapeshifter, Xounds, XFactor, AIM, Adium, Cocktail, Toast, Popcorn, iPod Rip, and Office), I just figured that if I can simply transfer rather than reinstalling them, it would be a lot easier.
However my 2 primary concerns are my iTunes and iPhoto libraries (3330 songs and 4182 pcitures respectively), considering that I've spent literally hours making countless playlist in iTunes, and countless folders, slideshows, and books in iPhoto, if I was to lose all this it would truly be a mess.
I know I'm probably making a big deal out of this and it's an extremely easy and basic process, please just pardon this still pretty new Mac user and help me out:) Also if anybody else has experienced the log in slow down or strange trash being emptied sound I would be glad to hear your experiences.
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Mervyn

    Hi Mervin,
Bottom line given that there is no way that I know of fixing this problem, I am planning to simply create a new user account.
You can do that (but I wouldn't) this KB article outlines how:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=155373
Basically you will copy the folders within your old home to replace the folders in the new home. Here is a list of specific folders if you decide to do that but a better solution would be to sort your existing user.
Here where your important data is stored ("~" stands for "Home"):
    Your Data in Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Application Support/iCal(copy the whole folder)
Also in ~ / Library/ Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist * This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
    ~ / Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
    ~ / Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    ~ / Library/iMovie (copy the whole folder)
    ~/ Pictures/iPhoto Library
    If you want cookies:
    ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
so is there a way to transfer my current programs from one user account to the other without reinstalling???
As for applications, they should all be in your Application folder(there is only one) and available to ALL users, unless you have put "limitations" or "parental controls" on the account.
Now to the best course of action:
To find the issue affecting your existing user account, follow these steps:
Log back into your normal user account:
    1. Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
         • Restart and test your applications.
         • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Time RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
         • Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
         • Restart and test your applications.
         • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
       • Navigate to yourhome/library.
       • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
       • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
       • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
       • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same      procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are      having trouble with.
    Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
If the isssue persists navigate to ~/library/caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.
    Good luck, let us know.

  • Application crashes, but not in new user account. How to fix?

Like many others on the forum, I have experienced frequent crashes in SL in Mail, Safari, Powerpoint, and other applications, particularly when adding an attachment to an email message or inserting an image file in a presentation slide. Did all the usual maintenance things such as verifying and repairing permissions, reinstalling SL, trashing virus protection apps, etc. Crashes persisted. However, I created a new user account and when working in that account the crashes do not occur.
What does this suggest about the nature of the problem and how do I resolve it, preferably without migrating all my files over to the new user account.
    Many thanks.

Open Directory Utility. You will find it in Applications/Utilities.
Click the lock to make changes and enter your admin password.
Go to the menu bar: Edit > Enable root user.
Follow the instuctions to create the System Administrator (Root) user.
Do not use the same password that a regular user already has. Do not use a trivial password.
    Log out the current user.
In the log in window, enter root as the user name.
Enter the password that you just created.
You now have access to all User accounts, folders and files. Move the files you need from the old account to the working one. For example move the contents of your old Documents folder to the new Documents folder. This is easiest if you open two Finder windows and place them side by side. repeat this for the other folders in your old user space with one exception. *Do not* copy the contents of the Library folder.
There are a couple of things in the Library folder that you probably do want. To retrieve your email, copy the contents of the Mail folder. If you have installed fonts in your user space copy those too.
Let your new Library manage itself from then on. Your apps will place preference files etc in the appropriate folders as they are launched.
You should also give the working account admin priviliges. (System Preferences > Accounts)
Be very careful whilst logged in as root. The main Library and System folders are no longer protected and nothing requires a further password entry. Do what you need to do and get out of there.
When you are finished log back in to the working account and open Directory Utility once more.
Go to Edit > Disable root user.
Keep the old user account on the drive for a while until you are sure everything is working correctly and nothing is missing.

  • After creating a new user account, how do I move my files into the new user?

I have an issue where my 'Desktop/Screensaver' prefs seem to be corrupt somehow. When I click on that icon in System Preferences, it stalls and I get the spinning ball, thus resulting in a force quit. After reading a Mac Format magazine where someone wrote in with a similar issue, they said to trash various prefs (did that and made no difference) and if that didn't work, try creating a New User account (therefore creating brand new system prefs) and move your stuff over.
Well, I've created the New User account, but I can't figure out how to move/copy my stuff into the user folders. After copying and attempting to move stuff in, I see folders with a red circle with a white line through it (like a 'no entry' sign).
Any clue as to how this can be done? All I'm trying to do is to reinstate the system prefs so they are not corrupt anymore on my log-in.

No. Not the main Library folder. Make absolutely sure you are in the Home Library folder and not the main Library folder.
Your Home Library folder is hidden in Lion. To get to it, in the Finder menu, select GO and hold the option key down. Select Library in the submenu. The Finder window will open in your Home Library. This is where your user prefs are stored.
Once there, you will see the Preferences folder. Open it up, select all items within it and move them to the trash. You will need to restart in order for the new Finder preferences to be recreated.
Once you restart, then you will be back to the default preferences to the system and all applications. And yes, it will affect all settings including your Dock, just as logging into a new user. You will have to reset everything there also.
If you wish to do a selective method, instead of deleting all preferences, try deleting the one associated with your problem. Screen saver problems should be affected by the system preferences, so try deleting this:
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist.lockfile
Note that when you delete system file preferences, a restart will be required. For applications, just quit the application before trashing preference files.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium problem creating new user account

I am unable to create a new user account on my Windows 7 Home Premium computer. I have 3 accounts on it already, two are adminstrators, and just trying to add a fourth one (standard user).
I go to User Accounts, click Create new account, give it a name, keep Standard user checked, and press Create Account. The account appears to get created and shows up on the User Accounts screen, though it shows that it is password protected already, even
though I didn't have an opportunity to give it a password yet. I can manage that new user account and delete the password, and it then shows up on User Accounts as not having a password.
When I try to log on as that user from the main logon screen, it prompts me for the password (if I have specified one), but it doesn't accept the password (I've tried defining and using various ones), and I get the message "The user name or password is incorrect".
If I don't define a password for that account, when I click on the account button to logon, I get that same error message immediately.
I also noticed that C:\Users doesn't include the new user account folder there. Don't know if that should've been created at this point before logging on for the first time. I also noticed that there's a "Default User" folder that has a lock on the folder
icon, and I'm not able to open that folder (says it's invalid). There is a "Default" folder there with some content in it and I am able to view it. Don't know if either of these folders act as templates for new users.
At some point months ago I did have a profile problem with one of the existing accounts, and had to follow some suggestions on repairing that user profile. Don't know if that perhaps has complicated things. The 3 existing user accounts are working fine.
Any tips on what I can try to get a new account established?
    Thanks, Chuck

I agree with the same problem and the answer below did not work either.  I tried changing permissions to Users directory and that did not work either.  I even tried creating the directory name of user I wanted to install and that was recognized and
being used, but will not start a user directory for new user.

  • Help - iMac Storage/New user account question

Ok - so I've assumed that my user account was corrupt as Ive been having problems with Safari crashing/freezing the whole of my Mac, but thats another storey.
So i decided to create a new user account to delete the old one. I copied the following folders from my original user account into the shared folder first of all:
    Pictures
    Music
    Movies
    Documents
I've now deleted the old account and copied these folders from Shared into my new user account - actually Ive just left Music, Pictures & Movies in shared and am going to point the relevant apps such as iTunes to the shared folder.
The problem I have, is that I've lost over 100gb of storage somewhere on the Mac and I can't see where!
As far as I can see, I've deleted everything so that there is only one copy now and have emptied the Trash folder.
Anybody got any suggestions - perhaps a hidden folder somewhere?
    Thanks

    >>... I can't seem to see it anywhere anyway...
It would be a folder or disk image (.dmg) in /Users, along with your current account home.
    >>I might try and get rid of the Events folder - not sure if I need that or not?
iMovie (2013): Updating projects and events from previous versions of iMovie

iMovie (2013): Removing old libraries after updating
    say that you probably don't...
'You can delete these folders if you no longer want to work with them in the previous version of iMovie.
Before removing your projects and events, make sure they have been updated for iMovie version 10.'

  • Brand new user account, same old name

I've been having some quirky behavior with the main account on my Powerbook. Most recently I purchased and installed Speed Download, only to find that it unexpectedly quits after just a few minutes of an FTP download. I can run it in a new account without incident. Reinstalling does not solve this problem.
But this is just the most recent issue, there is a lot of other strange behavior that I'd like to try solving with a new user account before I go ahead with a re-install of the OS. But I don't want trouble with permissions, etc. so my plan is this:
    1) Backup old user account (let's call it ABC).
    2) Create new admin account called XYZ.
    3) Log into XYZ and delete ABC account
    4) Rename XYZ back to ABC
    5) Rebuild ABC from the backup, being careful to only import Library items I really need (like the Mail.app data) and let the rest be created from scratch.
The idea is that the user name will be the same, so there will be no permission issues. The contents of the Users/ABC/Library directory will be mostly new and uncluttered except for those items that I hand-pick from the backup.
Please only comment on this migration plan, I don't need help with Speed Download. This particular issue is only the straw that broke the camel's back, there is a lot of other quirky behavior that I am eager to get sorted out as well.
Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Ian,
I'm not sure if this will work.
The Mac OS (like all unix OS) is saving a user ID which is a number stored in the system, changing the name of the user will not help because your ID will be different than the old ID.
One thing I can think about is if you have another Mac you can use the migration assistant to move your data to it and back after deleting the old account.
One other option will be to delete your account without deletion of the files (files are stored under deleted users directory), create a new one and copy all needed data to the new account.
    I hope this helps you,
    Ziv

  • Transferring from old to new user account

My existing user account is corrupted, and will not allow my Mac G5 (non-intel) to boot the desktop items; it only gets past the log in stage. In order to access my files, I created a new user account, and am able to transfer my files across easily enough. However, the problem is of course that I have lost quite a few settings, e.g. iTunes account and music/movie files, Safari bookmarks etc.
If I reinstall Leopard, will this fix the user account?
If not, is there a way to transfer the settings from one account to another? I have tried copying and pasting into the relevant directories, but this does not appear to work with either iTunes or Safari.
I would be most grateful for any advice.
    Thank you.
