New user - managed or referenced masters?

I finally jumped and bought Aperture after having outgrown iPhoto and gone through the Ap2 and Lr demos.
Now begins the process of migrating my current and old photos into Aperture.
Right now I've got less than 15k photos. I have an organization scheme in mind, but I'm looking for advice as to whether I should go managed or referenced.
I realize that this isn't an all or nothing decision (it is really a project setting), and that I can change my mind later if necessary.
Managed:
+ simple
+ vaults backup images and Ap-specific data
- doesn't play well with Time Machine
Pros for referenced:
+ can span multiple drives
+ works well(better) with Time Machine
+ can easily share masters with other apps (I don't plan to)
- vaults only backup Ap-specific data, not images
Have I missed anything?
Any recommendations?

I prefer Referenced Masters even on a Mac Pro. IMO it makes for a clean backup workflow and a forever-logical organization. And Referencing Masters ensures that the size of the Library will always be small enough that it need not cause a hard drive to exceed 50% full and reduce speed.
• Finder-copy images from CF to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
• Eject CF.
• Burn DVD copies of the original images.
• Eject DVDs.
• Import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location."
• Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing).
• Reformat CF in camera, and archive DVDs of originals off site.
Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media.

  • Referenced masters:  How can you tell where a photo's master is?

After reading many recommendations on this site, I have set up my main library on my internal HD with referenced masters on an external HD.
Now I need to import a job which I shot out of state and which was saved as a managed library on my MBP. So I copied it to an external drive and then Imported it into the main A3 library. That worked just fine but it seems like it copied all the masters as well as the versions from that new library into the main one.
Before I try to relocated them, how can I tell where the master for a particular photo is located?
    Thank you very much.
    Bo

Versions are always in the Library (they are text instructions saved to a file and applied on-the-fly to the Master in order to produce the image on screen (mostly)). Masters are either in the Library (in which case they are "Managed"), or not in the Library (in which case they are "Referenced"). The Library is a "package". A package is a container of files which shows as a single file to the user.
Badges tell you the status of the Master on which the Version is based. No badge = Managed. Referenced Masters show a badge. Off-line Referenced Masters show a modification of this badge. Versions with Missing Masters show yet another version of this badge.
Badges can be toggled to show or not via the Metadata Overlays. All seven of the Metadata Overlays can be customized.
Use the filter Rule "File Status" to filter for "Managed", "Referenced", "On-line", "Off-line", and "Missing".
If you want to move all Manage Masters to your external drive, in Photos view filter using the "File Status" Rule set to "Managed", then select all and "File→Relocate Master".

  • Can't reconnect Missing Referenced Masters

I have a library which is a mixture of Managed and Referenced Masters.  Library on SSD and Referenced Masters on HDD.
A very small number of Masters have gone AWOL and I can't reconnect them.  Using Spotlight, I can locate the actual Masters with Finder - they are just where I expect them to be, in a subfolder in a Folder called "Aperture Masters" on my HDD.
    Here is an example
The badge on this image looks like this
When I choose Update from Master, I get this message
So then I try to reconnect via "Locate Referenced Files..." and get this message
These images are findable by filtering on "Missing" or "Offline"
All but one have the badge with the arrow and the yellow triangle.
One has a badge like this (a kind of inverted MobileMe sourced badge
Any ideas on how to reconnect?

Interesting.  The User Manual I was reading is a PDF and it defines the badge as this.  Note that the badge is flipped in the two versions and the PDF doesn't mention FaceBook or Flickr.
Seems I should re-download the User Manual

New user here.  Trying to import iPhoto 9.4.2 libraries into Aperture 3.4.3 as referenced files. When accessing File>Import>Library, it finds the iPhoto library just fine, but then imports it as Master files. No option that I can find to leave the photos in place on the file system.  All the literature says their should be an option to choose, but I never get that option.  What?

All the literature says their should be an option to choose, but I never get that option.
That has been true for the previous Aperture versions. Now Aperture simply treats the original image files exactly as they are in the imported library. Referenced images will stay referenced, managed will be imported as managed. But you can always relocate the imported managed images afterwards by using "File > Relocate".

  • How can I add a new user to my managed account?

*There is an existing skype user.  i.e She already has a skype account
*I have a Skype Manager account and want to provide her with SkypeCredit
*I am having trouble doing that.  It seems that I can add a new member to my group only if they are a new user (i.e. they get a new skype address). Then I seem to have learned that this might not be possible if I or they (?) are in the US.
    Will someone clarify this?
    Skype support tells me that:
"Reymark C: I am afraid adding members in somewhere in US is no longer available."
Is this somewhere on the help pages that I missed.  Being logged-in, skype knows where I am (or where I list my home as).  Why did it let me waste so much time struggling with this?
Also, why is there this restriction?
    ...after much other talk.....
L JEPSON: Question: Can I add skype credit to another person's account?
Reymark C: That;s only possible once he is already added to your manage account.
L JEPSON: You said I cannot add members in the US.
Reymark C: Those are only possible outside US.
L JEPSON: So I can not add anyone to my manager account, b/c I am in the US, correct?
Aside, why can't the skype support use skype-screenshare?  I wanted to show what I saw.  Instead, we had me sign some online contract, gave control of my computer to the support person.  Spent a fair amount of time doing this.   Enable your users to use skype to see our screens, please, Microsoft.  You can still record the conversation and record the screenshare, can't you?

  • Creating a new user in solution manager?

    Dear All,
How to create a new user in solution manager for creating an incident?

    prathish5,
I did this in our SolMan by following the instructions provided by a SAP document called: "Service Desk VAR Setup Master Data". I got it from the Support Portal, though I can't seem to find it now so I can't provide a link at this time.
Anyway, assuming that your SolMan is already able to download your master data (and/or your customers', if you are a VAR), these are the steps suggested by the guide:
    1) The message creator (aka Key User) should have the following authorization roles:
    SAP_SUPPDESK_CREATE
    SAP_SUPPCF_CREATE
    SAP_SMWORK_BASIC
    SAP_SMWORK_INCIDENT_MAN
    See also SAP note 834534.
A best practice is to create a Z copy of all of these roles (use transaction PFCG), so you can manage them and change them around if you need to. Just make sure to "activate" all the authorizations of your copy of the roles:
    - Open the roles in tr. PFCG;
    - Select Authorizations, and choose Change authorization data;
    - If you get a yellow semaphore, be sure to review the authorizations and fill them according to your security policy. You can assign global permissions for all the authorization objects by double-clicking the yellow semaphore;
    - Generate the profile, then go back and save the role;
    2) Following the guide, with tr. SU01 I created a Template user and called it KEY_USER (make sure the user type is actually Template) and assigned to it the Z roles you created in the step above;
    3) If your SolMan is working properly, you can now use report AI_SDK_SP_GENERATE_BP (tr. SA38) to create the Business Partners and SAP users automatically. The report will log in the Support Portal and read the users which are authorized to open a SAP tickets, and create a BP and user for each of them. Use the Template user KEY_USER created in step 2 as a "Reference user" and all the new users will automatically get the correct autorizations. Also if your SAP Connect (tr. SCOT) is correctly configured, you can choose to send an automatic mail to each user, with their login and generated password.
Otherwise, you can manually create a user with transactions SU01 and BP - be sure to fill the "Identities" table here - the report AI_SDK_SP_GENERATE_BP makes all these things automatically so it's definitely your best bet.
    4) Your users should now be able to log in with the SAPgui and use transaction CREATE_NOTIF to create a new message in your SolMan. Also if you have done the preparation steps correctly they should also be able to log in your Incident Manager using their browser, and open a message there and also review their past messages.
Those are just a quick insight of the steps you need to do. This is NOT an easy thing to configure, at least it wasn't for me; if you don't have a reliable guide to follow you're going to struggle: I strongly suggest you browse through the SAP documentations (also the blogs) - http://service.sap.com/xsearch is your best friend!
I hope this helps a little bit. Good luck.

  • Error -14135 Creating New User In Workgroup Manager

    Hello,
I'm running 10.5.8 on a Mac Server, and until today have had no issues adding new users with a preset I've created in Workgroup Manager. Today, I've received the message:
    Got unexpected error
Error of type eDSRecordAlreadyExists (-14135) on line 1268 of SourceCache/WorkgroupManager/WorkgroupManager-361.2.1/PMMUGMainView.mm
This error appears before I'm even able to enter any information.
I would appreciate any suggestions! Right now I'm running Disk Utility and repairing permissions. I haven't found any other ideas online.
    Thank you!

Following is the text from Note for Custom Password Validation logic:
Customers who wish to use their own password validation logic may do
so by writing their own Java classes that implement the
      oracle.apps.fnd.security.PasswordValidation Java interface.  The
interface requires 3 methods to be implemented:
      1) public boolean validate(String user, String password)
        - This method takes a username and password, and then returns true
or false, indicating whether the user's password is valid or invalid,
      respectively.
      2) public String getErrorStackMessageName()
        - This method returns the name of the message to display when the
user's password is deemed invalid (i.e., the validate() method returns
      false).
      3) public String getErrorStackApplicationName()
        - This method returns the application shortname for the
      aforementioned error message.
After writing the Java class to perform customized password
validation, the customer must then set the value of the profile option
SIGNON_PASSWORD_CUSTOM to be the full name of the class.  If, for
example, the name of the Java class is
oracle.apps.fnd.security.AppsPasswordValidation, then the value of the
      SIGNON_PASSWORD_CUSTOM profile option must be
      oracle.apps.fnd.security.AppsPasswordValidation.  Note that AOL/J
will attempt to load this class dynamically.  Hence it is necessary to
make the class accessible by AOL/J.  This means that in Forms, the
class must first be loaded into the database using the loadjava
      command.

  • Can't add in new users any more in Workgroup Manager

    Hello all,
You all might remember me from my other post about problems with the server - I gave up yesterday and reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled OSX and set everything up. All worked lovely and perfect. Put in a few users, worked fine. Could log in and access my home directories - perfectly fine. All looked rosy.
Roll on to this afternoon, I tried to add in a new user by changing to /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 in Workgroup Manager, can see the list of users, so I clicked on the padlock icon to authenticate myuself - so an username and password prompt popped up. I've got 2 admin accounts on the server - one admin and one nadmin, the former to administrate the local stuff, and nadmin for the server stuff. Put in the nadmin username and password and I got:
The login information is not valid for this server. The server failed to accept the login information you provided. Check the Name and Password and try to log in again or contact your network administrator.
Somewhat surprised as I logged in Workgroup Manager with the same username and password! I tried several different permuations of usernames:
    Login window: admin
    Workgroup Manager: admin
    /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1: nadmin
and then, admin, nadmin, nadmin, then nadmin, nadmin, nadmin, then tried admin, admin, admin - and in every case I could get to Workgroup Manager but unable to authenticate to the /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 node using either admin or nadmin passwords. I've tried changing nadmin's password, and adding in a new admin user and nothing works. Even tried rebooting the server, no go. Everything still works perfectly fine, I can log in using my network username on a Mac and access my home directory fine - I just can't add in new users, delete them or change their information. Very frustrasting!
What am I doing wrong, and what can I do to fix this problem?
Thanks very much for your help in advance!
    Cheers - Piers

Is the user you are trying to use to make changes with the directory admin that was created at the initial setup of your OD? Has the other user you are trying to use been granted privileges to administer the directory (under user accounts)?

  • Error when saving new user FBA user management

Each time I add a new user to the FBA User Management list in Sharepoint 2013, I receive an error after clicking the OK button.
    'Sorry something went wrong!'

Nevertheless the user is added to the list. What could cause this error and how to solve it?
    best,

did you check the logs for the correlation ID?
It also sounds like it may be related to the "FBA User Management" third party component.

  • Business Contact Manager issue with New Users

I have an issue with a client when setting up Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2013. The client recently got a new employee and the employee was setup on an existing workstation that has BCM installed. When I launched Outlook 2013, and configured Oultook for
the new user, BCM started and needed to be configured. I went through the procedure for connecting to a 'Remote Database' on the server, typed in the server name as requested, and clicked Continue. BCM searched for the database but could not find it. The existing
user account on the workstation works just fine with BCM, and sees the remote database.
My next step was to remove BCM and re-install. This is the latest version/release of BCM for Outlook 2013. The existing user account was able to configure BCM with no issues, and found the remote database without an issue. The new user account had the same
issue as before and would not find the remote database.
I logged onto the same workstation as the administrator account we use to perform Admin tasks. I launched Outlook, configured Outlook 2013, and was able to successfully configure BCM and connect to the remote database with no issues.
I then created another New User on the server called Testaccount (TAccount), and logged onto the same workstation again, as this new user, and went through the same Outlook 2013 configuration and BCM setup. BCM has the same issue with this new user, and
cannot locate the remote database. From what I can determine, this looks to be something related to New Users that are created on the server and BCM not locating the remote database. Existing users do not have this issue when configuring BCM and connecting
    to the remote database.
Has anyone had this issue or seen this issue and knows of a fix to correct this so my client can use BCM with the new user account, and any future new users they hire?
Thank you in advance for any assistance on this matter.

  • How to define a new user in Enterprise manager with Specific access rights?

    Hi,
I want to create a new user in OEMS 11g who should be able to access only the scheduler jobs section.
    How can this be acheived?

You can create new administrators via the Setup --> Administrators page
You can grant certain access rights to targets, you can not however grant priv to only access the job system
    Take a look at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11857_01/em.111/e14586/security3.htm#sthref235

  • Managed or Referenced?

1St time user of Aperture here, coming from a Windows environment. I am a bit lost at the moment wit Aperture and how it works and why it does certain things. Firstly, managed or referenced. Which is best? I want to import my camera pics and keep them in one place. Referenced?

    rwboyer wrote:
This is a fabulous idea. NOT!
Why the heck wouldn't you just round trip your image using something like say.... Edit with? Why the heck are you even using something like Aperture with this philosophy? I would suggest you just stick with PS and Bridge.
Wow, did you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something
Because round trip creates duplicate tif/psd file that's ~3x the size of raw file. With Ap v2, at least it save is in the same folder as where the referenced master file resides. It used to be completely useless because Ap would store the new tif into ApLib, even if the master was referenced.
As a matter of fact, I do use PS from time-to-time, along with CaptureNX for things that simply cannot be done within Aperture. I am not a pixel peeper so I really don't use PS other than to integrate text or create layer-based multiple images that ends up in other applications like Powerpoint, Keynote slides.
Doing what you suggest is the best possible way to wreak havoc with your workflow. Even if you are using LR that has no capability to do anything but referenced images this is not a good idea. Let me see I have like 300,000 images. I really love to remember where they are or look up a physical location and then go there with another tool and screw with the master image so that I wreak havoc on any nondestructive adjustments that Aperture/LR understands. Possibly screw up my metadata. Oh no wait I'll just redo things I have already done in a different tool and then save a copy somewhere and reimport that copy and add a bunch of metadata again. Yea that's good, that's way better and easier than just using "edit with". <----Sarcasm End Rant.
    </div>
Diverse ideas are good thing. Really, not being sarcastic or argumentative.
There are more than one way to do things, as you know. While doing what I suggest may not make any sense to you, it makes sense to me and possibly others.
What is implicit in you basis is that if one let Aperture manage the masters, there is no need for disciplined file structure to store and backup the images by the user - other than let Vault/TM do it. And by using round-trip "edit with", Ap will manage that too. Since disk space is cheap, who cares. Its simple. I appreciate the argument for it. It just not for me. I find the option for easy direct access to master files more valuable than to have Ap manage my files.
Btw, I've never lost metadata by direct access of the files. They do get destroyed in PS with layers and fusing images and text but those really don't matter in this context.
