Newbie- Fresh home Setup Help

About to get started with osx server on a mac mini. I've purchased a static IP, because I want to serve my websites from home. Question is, I also have a mac pro and macbook and PC. the IP comes through on a cable modem, which I connect to a router to serve the rest of the clients using dhcp.
How should I configure this system so that when someone points to my IP or rather my dns name, they access my files in apache on the mac mini.
I ask because I'm wondering if the outside world can see my mini beyond the dhcp enabled router

Your router will do all the filtering for incoming traffic. By default it should be blocking all incoming connections (this is what you want).
However, you can configure port forwarding on the router to permit specific incoming traffic (e.g. port 80/HTTP) to be directed to a specific internal machine (e.g. the Mini).
You'd need to check your router's documentation on how to configure port forwarding.
Once you've setup port forwarding, update your DNS to point your domain record (e.g. 'www.domain.com') to the public IP address of your router - port forwarding will take care of getting it to the Mini from there.
Just be aware that many (most?) cable providers block incoming traffic on port 80 because they don't want you running a server on your link (unless you're using a business-grade service). Therefore you may find that remote users may not be able to get to your server even if you do the above. If that's the case your options are to switch providers or upgrade your service to one where they'll allow you to run a server.

  • Verizon DSL Newbie needs Home Networking Help

    I am a brand new Verizon DSL user (on my i-MAC G3 OS Panther) and I would love to be able to access the same DSL connection with my i-Book G4 (also OS Panther with an Airport Extreme card built in).
    I tried looking this up on Verizon's website and quickly became totally confused. Verizon seems to think MAC users are second class citizens.
    Would someone be willing to tell me exactly how to do this? Do I need a router? Do I need an Airport Base Station?
    Thanks much, and please forgive my ignorance.

    I have a verizon westell dsl wireless router which is working fine when the 3 macs (1 g3 powermac, 2 ibook g4's - all panther) on the network are hard wired.. but when you try to connect wirelessly, the ip address found in the TCPIP DHCP is a 169 address.. not 192.. and even though it seems to see the router.. you cannot connect to the internet. Anyone have a clue... I've tried manually typing in a 192 addy in the range which for a moment fools Airport and it states in Network Status that is's connected to the internet.. but it's not... I've also done the old un plug the router. restart the mac.. turn airport on and off drill and again.. nothing...I'm stumped... At one time we were able to connect wirelessly to this router.. but now no...HELP PLEASE!

    JSB Xtreme Audio Notebook optical out problem with Home TheaterSystem-HELP!, I have this sound card connected?(optical OUT) ?to my home?theater system's digital IN ?through the recommended /8in. optical miniplug-to-optical SPDIF cable. Theater system is set correctly to Digital-In mode. I have no sound!
    The cable is a Velocity Toslink-to-Optical Mini Plug digital cable. I don't see any settings in the Creative Console Launcher. The notebook is a Dell XPS M730 (Vista 32).
    I have a PS3, DirecTV, and the SB Xtreme Audio Notebook cable on a hub switch that connects to the system's?one Optical IN. The PS3 and DirecTV sound perfect!
    The sound card works fine with standard PC speakers. I'm at a loss as?to what to try next. I set this whole system up myself, so I'm pretty good at working out the kinks, except this one!

    OK. I just went to Control Panel - Sound - Playback - Digital Output Device (SB Xtreme Audio Notebook) - Properties - Advanced. I experimented with different sample rates and bit depths. Clicked the test button and lo and behold - sound from the HTS! I've tried iTunes, PowerDVD (configured to digital output) and YouTube - no sound! Am I missing something really obvious?
    HA! Just backed out to Playback and selected Digital Output Device (SPDIF) and set as Default. Sound is emunating from HTS! Well, that mystery is solved! Who knew.
    Thanks anyway! Any comments or advice will still be appreciated.

  • Site setup help...

    Hi -
    I am new to using CS5 and I am having a few different problems.  I am not sure but I think they all stem from improper setup.  I had used dreamweaver mx 2004 to set up a few sites back in 2004-5 so I am am somehwat familiar with setup, however, besides trying out CS5 on a new computer, I also now have a QNAP 459+ NAS which I am using as the remote server (as opposed to a site through go daddy or other).
    I have PHP and mysql running on my NAS, and I have also installed Xampp on my computer.  (first off I was not sure that I needed this because I have a server (NAS), but I decided to install so because I was pretty sure that my local machine needed apache running in order to parse php scripts before they run on the server)  In XAMPP control panel, I get the following:
    Where it says apache is started but up above it does not say that it is running.  When I try to view PHP code in dreamweaver from the local site, it just shows the little PHP emblem and does not process the code.  It does process php if I access the page from the server by typing the address in a browser.  It does not process at all in dreamweaver.
    I also get the following errors in dreamweaver which I am not sure but I think are related:
    "dynamically-related files could not be resolved because your credentials don't allow file activity on the server"
    and
    "An unknown error occurredwhile discovering dynamically related files. Retry."
    I am not sure if I have multiple problems or just one which is causing all these symptoms, but any advice/help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    LilPauly8211

    With no files open, edit your preferences and change units to inches.
    That said, InDesign will convert units so if you type 11 in, even though the document uses picas, it will convert the inches to picas for you.

  • Home Network Setup Help ( Motorola & Linksys)

    Hi,
    I need help configuring my home network, I have created a diagram using gliffy.com to help view my current setup.
    Currently all wired and wireless computers connect to the internet successfully, that's with default settings. The only thing I have changed is the SSID and Wireless password.
    I need help figuring out the settings I need to input for the Motorola and the Linksys Routers so all computers can find each other in the network.
    I really don't know what the exact technical terms might be, but if you need more information I can gather it. Thank you!

    Thank you lordstag!! worked perfectly

    Local IP Address
    Before: 192.168.1.1
    After: 192.168.0.100
    DHCP Server: Disable
    Connected network cable from Motorola LAN port 4 ---> Linksys LAN port 1, left the Internet port on the Linksys empty
    Motorola

    DHCP Server: Yes
    Starting Local Address: 192.168.0.100
    Renewed the IP's of the clients
    'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.
    'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address
    This is how my network now looks and works
    One last question, could this have been done using the Internet port on the Linksys Router?
    I appreciate all the help, Thanks again !

  • Home mail server setup help.

    I admit that I am pretty much clueless when it comes to setting up a mail server.
    The setup:
    I have a local network at home with about 5 computers. Inside the network we have a router, a store-brought one that has bulit in DSL modem and wireless. It is out central DNS server and provides us with a local network domain name. Then we have a domain for the outside world to see us. Let's just call it "shadow.dot.com". I opened up the ports on the router to allow in port 80 and all POP3 addresses. I installed apache, php, mysql, and postfix on my Linux machine. I used webmin to configure postfix. Users can recieve emails, let's say from my hotmail account to [email protected] However, when I use webmins view usermail feature fromt he postfix area, I click on a user, then compose but my home local domain is listed instead of my shadow.do.com domain. I had in the configuration to place that outside domain in the address. Well, either way, I cannot send a message. It remains in the message queue and refuses to send.
    I do not have smtp ports open because I want this secure. I only want to be able to send email from inside my local network. This way there is no chance at someone hacking my smtp part and sending tons of email spam with my address.
    For this setup, what do I need in my main.cf configuration file? Can someone just put all the options in there that I need so I can copy and paste for the most part? I need to be able to send out, and I also need PHP to use it to send email to people. Do I need to unblock smtp? Do I need to change any settings with PHP or will it use postfix by default?
    Thanks.

    There is a send mail queue that is viewable via webmin. I don't know if it errored or not, it just stayed in the queue and never sent.
    I uninstalled postfix and then reinstalled it with default configs again. I modified a few settings to reflect my outside domain. Then I set up sasl to log into my ISPs mail server. Not mail sorta sends. Some PHP scripts still have trouble with it. I guess I need to fix those manually because some PHP scripts work and some don't so it might be an error with the script itself.
    Mail is only sent via smtp via port 25, not recieved. Recieving port is in the one hundreds. That is the only port needed to be open for recieving of mail.
    Thanks for you tips. I have I dynamic IP so liem clued me in on what to do. I don't know if it was a combination of bad config and dynamic IP, but it sorta works now, so I guess have more tweaking to do.

  • Network Home Directory Setup Help

    Hello All.
    So heres the deal. I got a Mac Pro running Tiger Server and multiple machines running Tiger Client. I can use Admin Tools to create Users, but what do I need to configure on the client machines to see those network User Directories from the login window? I want all of the Users to have home folders on the server and be able to access them from any of the client machines. Im a server newbie and I've never used Directory Access. They are only macs, Do I need to use LDAP or Active Directory? Any tips would be great. Thanks.

    You need to create the users in an LDAP directory. If you create them as local users their Home folder will stay on their local computer. The problem is that you can't have the same user name as a local user and an LDAP user. After you create an LDAP service you will have to restart a client Mac, then it will "see" that LDAP services are available over the network. Then the client Mac will have an "Other" choice at its log in screen.

  • Home network setup HELP

    Hi
    Firstly I cannot get my Linksys RE1000 to work with my network having tried the set up CD on 2 computers (mac and windows)
    The main router is a BT Home Hub 2.0
    any suggestions
    Secondly this is what I am trying to achieve so help to do that would be great.....
    The main router is in the basement where out internet connection enters the house, also in the basement is our LAN board where we have ethernet cables extending to parts of the house. There is weak wireless signal from groundfloor up to the top floor so wanted to find something where I could plug into the ethernet port and it would broadcast an wireless network to the upper floors/areas with a weaker signal. Thought the RE1000 would do this job but i can't get it to do it wirelessly let alone connect it to the main router using a ethernet cable
    HELP Please.

    If you already have ethernet cable running throughout your house, then a wireless access point is probably your best solution........not the RE1000.
    It took me a couple tries to get a RE1000 up and running.  I'm pretty sure I didn't read or follow the directions.  I remember having to reset it a couple times using the reset button on the back of the RE1000.
    You'll need to have the RE1000 close to your main wireless router when you are setting it up.
    But again, if you already have ethernet cable running to parts of your house, the RE1000 is not your best solution.
    Best solutions in order:

  • Help needed- newbie trying to setup xerces XML pasrer

    Hello all,
    I am new to Java and XML.
    I am trying to write a simple java program that will use the xerces parser and will read the XML file.
    I have installed xerces 2.8.0 and put in on a specific location on my hard drive.
    I also added the xercesImpl.jar file to the CLASSPATH variable.
    I am trying to compile this code:
    import org.xml.sax.XMLReader;
    public class SAXParserDemo {
    public void performDemo(String uri) {
    System.out.println("Parsing XML File: " + uri + "\n\n");
    // Instantiate a parser
    XMLReader parser = new SAXParser();
    public static void main(String[] args)
    if (args.length != 1)
    System.out.println("Usage: java SAXParserDemo [XML URI]");
    System.exit(0);
    }//IF
    String uri = args[0];
    SAXParserDemo parserDemo = new SAXParserDemo();
    parserDemo.performDemo(uri);
    }//MAIN
    The error I get is on this line : XMLReader parser = new SAXParser(); stating that it cannot find SAXParser.
    What am I doing wrong? is there something else I need to import?
    Help will be much appreciated.
    Sorry for the newbie question.
    Cheers,
    Mike

    The error I get is on this line : XMLReader parser =
    new SAXParser(); stating that it cannot find
    SAXParser.
    What am I doing wrong? is there something else I need
    to import?Well, yeah. Your code shows you already know how to use the "import" statement. The compiler says it can't find SAXParser, and you correctly suspect that you need to import something. So the logical step: you need to import SAXParser.
    But you don't know what package it's in, right? Well let me just look it up in the API documentation for you... here it is... javax.xml.parsers.SAXParser. Take note of the existence of documentation for the next time you have this sort of question.
