Newbie Webcam Gamer

Hi guys im totally new to game development and I think i may have bitten off more than I can chew.
I have to create a game which uses a webcam as input.
Can anyone recommend a type of game that i would be best developing from peoples past experience. Ive found loads of decent game development libraries but if anyone could recommend any it would help alot.
Thanks guys Mike

To elaborate on delta's idea, if you have enough development time (not sure on how hard the actually motion detection will be), have the objects try and get to an object your are trying to protect, more objects at greater velocities increase with time. Scenarios include fighters and damsel in distress (not literally, could be anyone), maybe some top-down thing where you are the hand of god thing going on (little people), spaceships space station or planet needing to be protected, etc.

  • Simple/newbie 2D game creation

    this is my first attempt at creating any game. i am unsure how to even begin creating a simple 2D game similar to old "Hugo's House Of Horrors" for dos. It's kind of like the final fight in the way the characters move through the environment. any help is appreciated

    the first step is to sit down and write on paper, this has helped me, and plan the game out. The main points in animation/game creation is the x and y coordinates u must understand those like u would english. then the if statements that come with determining if one object ( a space ship ) is in in another objects ( enemy space ship ) space or the same x and y coordinate...remember u must always map everything out.
    www.google.com search: java game programming
    that should set u on your way..

  • Newbie.  Games/Apps via Facebook login?

    Hi All,
    Just got the S3 two days ago and thought I would have a seamless transition to my favorite Apps played via my HTC Incr.2. - after all, this Samsung phone is supposed to be amazing, right? Well, when I open an app (CandyCrush, Draw Something, Pinterest, etc.) and click 'log in/Facebook' I am directed to what appears to be a bad link. Page is blue across the top like facebook and there is an error message that reads "The page you requested was not found. Back to home".
    Before you ask, I do not wish to create a log in for each app  and deal with even more user ids and passwords-thats what the Facebook option is for. Again, something I did daily on an older phone with Verizon and had no problems whatsoever.
    I have the luxury of a group of coworkers who 4 out of 6 of us have the S3 and we tested these apps on a TMobile S3 and it worked fine.  Tested on another Verizon S3 and had the same problem I am having.  So I know its not my phone.
    Any ideas? Something quirky in my settings that I am unaware of?
    I apologize if this has been asked/answered before but I tried several keyword searches in the discussion group and could not come up with anything.
    TIA!

    Since the Jellybean update, facebook has not worked or works very slowly to the point where it is useless. I find if I use it on wi-fi it will load fast enough that I can at least use it, however, I am not always near a wi-fi so that is when it is a useless app for me. If you go to the facebook app in the playstore, you will see that a lot of people with S3's are having trouble.

  • Webcam Application

    I'm currently developing an application but am running into
    some troubles. I hope you guys can help me.
    What I'd like to do is a webcam game, that's how it should
    work:
    - a master movie is placed on the server
    - the first person opening the swf can see the master movie,
    then he's asked to reproduce what he saw with his webcam
    - the second person comes and sees the last recorded movie
    and then again has to reproduce what he saw, when he finishes he
    will se the master movie, to compare.
    - and so on
    now recording and playing all works fine, more or less, but
    how can I find out how many movies are there already? I thought
    about saving an xml with php on a simple webserver, but there has
    to be an easier way, a solution I can solve with FMS to read out
    the data in the folder.
    Thanks in advance.

    I think I'm doing something wrong here...
    Where do I have to place this?
    Thanks!
    The code goes in your server side actionscript, not on the
    client side. So, you'll need a client function and a server
    function... something like this:
    On ther server side:
    Client.prototype.getStreamList = function(){
    fileObject = new File("streams/_definst_");
    fileList = fileObject.list();
    returnArray = new Array();
    for (a=0; a<fileObject.length; a++){
    returnArray.push(fileList[a].name);
    return ReturnArray;
    On the client side:
    function getStreamList(){
    client_nc.call("getStreamList", onGetStreamList);
    function onGetStreamList(data){
    for (a=0; a<data.length; a++){
    trace(data[a]);
    So, what's happening here is that the client calls the server
    function, and the server returns the results to the client as an
    array of file names.
    As Fguru mentioned, you could use a SharedObject, but then
    you'd be eating up extra RAM when you don't need to.

  • Content of a presentation I will give - Please advise of faults

    Hi,
    As I mentioned in another thread I have to give a presentation on a chosen subject, I chose Java. This is quite important, at least for me it is anyway, I need to know what I am talking about and believe in what I am saying, I visit a seminar in July and this is about the most important part as well as a UNIX assignment. I have listed some of the things I will say below, please advise with what you might disagree with, if you can be bothered that is, I would be grateful :). If I get this wrong I dont get asked back to the academy full time to become SCJP certified and placed in the indusrty. I dont always want to stuck in retail :(
    Title - The origins and benefits of Java
    The early days
    Java was part of a 1991 effort by Sun to produce a language and enviroment which would enable consumer electronics to be able to communicate with each other, they saw this as one of the next big things in I.T.
    The sun team which James Gosling lead the coding side, set out to make an architecture neutral programming language which would be simply to use, secure and portable. Java was origianally called oak but didnt survive a patent check and was later renamed to Java.
    Although, given there intial goals the project failed and they were turned down when showcasing a PDA called star 7 to potential customers within the industry they still had a created an extremley useful language in Java which was yet to realise its full potential.
    Years ticked by before Javas big break came when Sun teamed up with Netscape to release the Hotjava browser which brought animation amongst other things to the Internet, its worth noting that Java was originally designed independant of the Internet but was later found to be a perfect match.
    What is Java
    Java itself is similar to both C and C++, it borrows its syntax from C and its object model from C++
    Java is seen for a high level language anyways as easy to learn
    Java code compiles slower than C/C++ one may ask why would we need Java?
    Java's benefits
    Java code compiles not into Native code like other languages, this is the main reason it runs slower but is the same reason Java is portable and secure.
    This means a couple of important things in the world of networked computing, Security and portability.
    Java code compiles into bytecode which is then interperted by a Java virtual machine (JVM). This means that only the JVM needs to implented for each different type of CPU or operating system. Where the internet or corperate networks are concerned this is a major plus as both are made up of many different machines.
    Other benefits Java offers are Garbage collection, this is automatic memory managment, once the progam has finshed with an address in memory its automatically freed up, in other C/C++ this is left to programmer and can lead to errors and is also a waste of resource.
    Also, in Java there are not Pointers like C/C++ instead, Java uses references, this is also a major plus in most cases, although pointers are moe powerful they cause many errors, java eleminates these errors by hiding the responsibility from the programmer, this means the programmer cant make common mistakes in C++ which are de-alocating memory twice or not at all, also this stops the programmer pointing to parts of memory which are out of bounds. This makes java more simple and user firendly.
    Java has a massive class libary as standard, this library is on call for the programmer to call upon as needed, this library is packed with useful classes the progrmamer can use without having right the code himself.
    Java is everywhere
    Java is used in over 2.5billion devices these are listed below:
    700 million computers
    1 billion mobil phones
    1.25 billion smart cards
    plus set-top boxes, printers , webcams, games, lottery terminals, medical devices, parking payment stations etc.
    and I will include a summary cover the main points of what I have listed above.
    other things I might mention here and there.
    Java is less expensive than .NET and other languages to use, with Java you pay a one off lisence fee rather than such as Microsoft who charge annual subscription.
    Learning programming you may not see yourself as a programmer for consumer electronics but Java opens these doors to you.
    Java is an excellent first language for people to learn who are starting out in programming, less confusing than C/C++ but still powerful.
    =====================================================
    Thats about it, so come and get me! I was rather make a fool out of myself in a forum rather than at a seminar so I dont mind if your harsh, the presentation is in powerpoint format and the above is what I plan to say with the aide of slides, I wont be using notes, as they expect confidence and a sound knowledge of your subject. I know it would be nice to mention more about J2SE/J2EE but I dont have the knowlege at this stage, that is why I chose only the origins and benefits. BTW the speech is only ment to run for about 10 minutes.
    Thanks to anyone who took the time out to read the above and post any suggestions.
    Mike

    That point needs more explaination. Security has many meanings and in some circumstances native code will be considered more secure.

    Not sure what you meant there.
    MS charges for the IDE. Sun charges for their IDE as well. The compiler is free from both however.

  • Adobe flash player settings buttons not working

    Hello.
    Just recently I tried to play a few webcam games online,
    however, upon loading the game and when the game is about to start
    up my webcam (I suppose), it pops up with a request to allow access
    to my webcam and microphone. Naturally this is okay, and is working
    normally... But when I press the allow button... Nothing happens.
    Same with the deny button. Actually, when I enter the settings
    through right clicking, nothing clickable at all is responding.
    I am using firefox 3.0.1. I have tried it with all
    addons/extensions disabled and with IE 7 also.
    I have also tried reinstalling flash player.
    Please, if anybody knows the solution to this problem, or
    even something that may help, I would greatly appreciate it.

    is Active X Filtering something that should show up under Tools, Manage Add-Ons?  If so, I think I had it earlier this week, but it's gone now.  In my efforts to eliminate the Flash Player so I could reinstall a working copy, I may have uninstalled too much.  It's not listed under Programs or under Tools at this time.

  • Writing games for US wireless carriers - general newbie question

    I am a newbie to kvm and j2me so excuse me if these question are very basic or if i'm asking the wrong questions.
    I have been asked to quickly research writing games in java for US wireless carriers. Ideally I'd like to pick a carrier (e.g. Verizonwireless) and find out more about writing for them. How should I go about researching this?
    My research so far has found:
    General j2me info:
    I did some initial searching in the forum and found that the following link will give me a basic guide to j2me:
    http://access1.sun.com/SRDs/access1_srds.html.
    If I look at the documentation for -
    - Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME)
    - Mobile Information Device Profile 1.0.1 (MIDP)
    Is this still the best place to look at online?
    Specific wireless carrier info:
    I had no luck finding where I should look for information on specific
    wireless carriers. Any suggestions? Also am I approaching this the right way or should I be looking at the specific java enabled mobile phones rather than the wireless carrier? Or is it a combination of the two?
    Thanks for any help.

    If the games are going to be networked then you should find out what type of network the carrier has (TDMA,CDMA,GSM with or without GPRS, etc. what bandwidths.... WAP or I-Mode). Regardless, you should be also concerned with what are the phones available on the carrier and what is their Java support.

  • [Newbie] Which JAVA API is a good choice for creating a game board?

    I'm a newbie in JAVA game programming.
    I would like to create a chess game for fun. I have a fairly good idea on how I want it to be, but I'm having some difficulty on the game board.
    I am not sure which set of JAVA API I should be using to design my board. I guess that the board will sits in the back, and in the front, there'll be my chess pieces that I can drag and drop.
    Should I be using JAVA Swing to do this? or JAVA 2D API? It will require some study for either one, so I figure I should pick a good one to learn.
    Thanks in advance! :-)

    Also if you would like to create a much simpler, 2D chess game, I would suggest you use the Swing API, which comes with Java from version 1.2 and on up. Naturally I would suggest at least using the latest 1.4 or 1.5 software development kit, because they have greater and more stable features, bug fixes and so on. I also would suggest you go to the library or Barnes and Noble nearest you, and pick up a book on Java. One recommendation that may be simpler to get an understanding of Java is from Deitel and Deitel: http://www.deitel.com/books/jHTP6/ though my beginner's Java book was geared directly toward how to program games (small games like memory, or tetris), though I can't remember what it was called. Anyway I believe it is very important to learn the basics of Java before you get into things that you may or may not understand. My opinion, so have a go at it.

  • Newbie trying to optimize webcam with ffplay

    I am playing with ffplay to view my webcam:
    ffplay -f video4linux2 /dev/video0 -x 320 -y 240
    According to v4l-info, this is my webcam's native resolution.
    I noticed, however, that the display is very delayed, i.e. if I move my head it takes more than a second for my head to follow on the screen.
    Which options are relevant in ffplay to experiment with, to make my webcam more responsive? Any pointers? I am completely new to the whole world of video, things like bitrate, pixel type, etc. throw up more questions than could be answered with google, so I want to slowly get the ball rolling by doing something more hands-on.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    PS: I know there has to be a way to make this work as on windows the webcam is very smooth...

    anyone? technical support is ringing out.thanks

  • Newbie: easiest way to see home webcam view from work?

    Hi,
    My Imac at home has the usual built-in isight camera, and I'm wanting to somehow set it up so that when I'm at work I can get my missus and our new baby to sit in front of it and I can see them.
    I don't have a webcam at work, so it would be a one-way thing, if that's possible.
    I'd rather not have to pay any subscription fee to do this, obviously, so if there's a free service then that would be best. I can install software at either end if necessary, although browser-based viewing (at work) would be best.
    What's the quickest and easiest way? Any advice appreciated.
    cheers,
    Ian

    Hi mcintosh_1,
    What is the computer at work ?
    If it is a Mac with iChat 2 AV or above then iChat can do one way chats.
    If it is an XP with AIM 5/9 or Trillian Pro, iChat can do one way chats. (either of these may take a bit of work to sort depending on your work network).

  • JMF Newbie Help and Dual Webcam

    Hi all,
    I am a new user to JMF and am quite lost with the various examples found on the internet.
    If there is a low-down, without the frills tutorial do point me to it.
    This is the process of my program:
    Selects a webcam
    Saves image (I found solutions for this in omcgovern's post)
    Reselect a webcam.
    The thing is I need to be able to switch webcams as and when I like but the webcam select dialog only appears once.
    And the capture device detection with null doesn't work, so I used a method that I found in another post.
    My code that I'm posting is just a webcam app I modified, to have a start and stop button.
    The start button is supposed to be able to select another web cam.
    Do give me pointers!
    Cheers.
