Newbie worries about Numbers

I've used Excel since the days of Lotus 1*2*3 and looking to switch to Numbers as it seems more cost efficient.   My question  is Numbers a pretty stable program?   Do I have to worry about it crashing and losing my files?   I loaded an Excel files in Numbers and saved it.  Does it now have a Numbers extension?    Can I take this file to work and load it back into Excel?
I've always felt assured that Excel works and my files are safe.  Can I feel the same about Numbers?
Thank you,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,
I loaded an Excel files in Numbers and saved it.  Does it now have a Numbers extension?
Yes. It is now a Numbers document.
Can I take this file to work and load it back into Excel?
No. Excel will not open Numbers documents.
You must first export from Numbers back to Excel.
In Numbers 3.2,
Be aware that Numbers is not an Excel clone. Continued to and fro between Numbers and Excel will build up gremlins.
If your income depends upon these documents, and your clients are using Excel, consider buying Excel for Mac or obtain one of the free look-alikes such as libre office.
Then have fun with Numbers where it doesn't affect your career.
Regards,
Ian.
Edit: P.S. to answer your question: is Numbers stable? Yes, it is on its own.
But I have a heck of a time fixing up glitches in Excel documents that people send me. Not always the fault of the Excel app, but often the "Excel" way of thinking by the authors of those documents. I spent four hours today cleaning up an Excel document that would have been so simple to construct in Numbers.

  • Family Pack Instalation no. the same as License no. on "About Numbers" ???

Last year I installed iWork on three computers.
Now I am trying to install it on a Mac Mini and it wants a License No. Problem - the number on the Installation instructions is not in the original box with the manual.
So I enter the serial number which appears in "About Numbers" (which was registered with Apple) taken from one of the previous three computers (they all have the same numbers). The program does not accept it. Is the number shown as the software license different than the installation number? Am I able to check on site the Apple software that I have registered?
    Raymond

That should work, but you might be making some common errors in entering the number. It's unlikely you're confusing 5/S or 0/O. However, from iWork '05 & ever since, you should not use the caps lock key & you must enter the hyphens.

    Hi nuvest,
Numbers 3.0.1 lives in your Applications folder. Numbers '09 lives in a folder called iWork '09 within your Applications folder. You can drag each icon to your Dock. They will become Aliases. Right click (or control click) on each Alias in turn and Options > Keep in Dock. Then you can choose which one to launch.
Numbers '09 (Numbers 2.3) is on the left, three column chart. Numbers '13 (Numbers 3.0.1) is on the right, four column chart.
Both versions will run side-by-side. Just be sure which version has your document open before you save.
In Numbers 3.0.1 you can convert "backwards" to Numbers 2 with File> Export > Numbers '09...

  • Questions about Numbers.... another newbie

I just purchased numbers.... trying to keep an accounting of a house remodel I'm doing. I managed to create a ledger sheet where I type in my receipts of purchases and then break them down into the appropriate subgroups... flooring, HVAC, paint, landscape and so on... The receipts on a lot of items purchased are these thermal cash register paper that dissolves and becomes unreadable in short order. So, question number one... can I scan these receipts, turn them into a jpg or pdf and then link the specific row for that receipt to the file on my computer so that if/when I want I could pop open that receipt to look at it? This also archives the receipt for me..... in case the thermal one is blank next year at tax time....
Question number two.... I would like a "main" ledger sheet that has all the invoices and receipts logged into it in total, beginning to end of the job. Then I would like to have a separate page/table for each month, hopefully auto filling from the "main" ledger... so as I type in a receipt, it automatically goes to the appropriate page for March, April, May.... that sort of thing.
Not sure if any of this is possible, I did search thru the archives a bit and couldn't find specific references, if this has been hashed out before... please point me to the posts and I'll go from there. Oh... total newbie to Numbers and for that matter any spreadsheet software...

    Hi Rob,
Thanks for the help.... well, I used the tilde (~) and tried changing the name to just "lowes.jpg", moved it around up and down the folder tree.... if I leave it in the "sites" folder, I am now getting a different error message:
    (403) Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /~brianlamb/Lowes.jpg on this server.
    Apache/1.3.41 Server at brian-lambs-imac-g5.local Port 80
So.... now it sounds like it's looking for it, just doesn't have the permission to see it... now, I did go into Apple system preferences, then under "Internet and Network", chose "Sharing" and set personal web sharing and personal file sharing to "on". So unless I'm needing to allow permission in some other way... I'm stumped.
Oh, and yes, I'm using 10.4.11
On edit: Holy Crap Batman! I got it to work... pulled up the lowes.jpg file in the finder and was checking... looks like at the bottom under permissions it was set to "no access" for "group" and "others", so I changed those to read and write and it's working. I can now pull up the copy of the receipt with one click.... too cool! Now all I have to do is spend a couple days scanning them all in, but once I'm caught up, weekly updates will be a snap! Thanks so much for the help.... this forum is great.... amazing!

  • Wehn I update the app the version does not change on "about Numbers"

When I update apps such as Numbers, pages, keynote through the app store the updates seem to work but when I then open the app and look in "about" the version is not updated.

    Hi John,
The update did not replace the old versions. They were moved to a folder called iWork '09 inside your Applications folder. The new versions are inside your Applications folder (not a sub-folder).
The icons on your Dock were not replaced. They continue to point to the old versions.
From your Applications folder, drag the new icons to your Dock. They will become aliases. On my Dock I have icons for Numbers 2 and Numbers 3. Both will run happily together.
Numbers 2.3 on the left (three column graph)
Numbers 3.2 on the right (four column graph)

  • Newbie asking about a DeploymentException

Thank you for reading my question.
First I apologize as a newbie if this is a common question. Despite my still-limited vocabulary, I have tried to search this forum by the keywords in the exceptions I am getting, but it didn't get me anywhere.
I have J2EE 1.3.1 and jboss-3.2.1_tomcat-4.1.24. I have successfully compiled, deployed, and run most of the tutorials of the O'Reilly workbook for JBoss (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/entjbeans3/workbooks/) and am now trying to branch out on my own a bit but not getting far.
I have simplified so much that I am now only trying to run a copy of the oreilly's first tutorial's CabinBean and its client, except I have renamed CabinBean to ThingBean. (With all source and xml files are changed accordingly).
When I try to run my client program, the line
    Object ref = jndiContext.lookup("ThingHomeRemote");gives a "javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: ThingHomeRemote not bound".
After looking into this further, I find that when I (re)deploy my jar or when I restart the jboss process (pieces of the console output is included below my message), it complains about something named "test/TestEntity" in a jarfile named ejb-test.jar, neither of which I know anything about. (My bean is named Thing and is in thing.jar along with its ejb-jar.xml and jboss.xml.)
Does anyone know what this ejb-test.jar is? Is ejb-test.jar supposed to be there? Is it keeping my Thing bean from deploying, or does it sound like my Thing bean has problems of its own?
    Thanks for any insight,
    /Mel
Here is copied from the jboss console during a restart (I have replaced parts with "<<myjbossdir>>" which makes it somewhat shorter):
    13:35:48,812 ERROR [URLDeploymentScanner] Failed to deploy: org.jboss.deployment.scanner.URLDeploymentScanner$DeployedURL@a624f2ea{ url=file:/<<myjbossdir>>/server/default/deploy/ejb-test.jar, deployedLastModified=0 }

And a little later it has this snippet:

It works, just following the simple first sample provided by O'Reilly. The home lookup lines are Context jndiContext = new InitialContext();  // props from a jndi.properties file
    Object ref = jndiContext.lookup("ThingHomeRemote");
ThingHomeRemote home = (ThingHomeRemote)PortableRemoteObject.narrow(ref,ThingHomeRemote.class);   and the ejb-jar.xml contains
    <ejb-jar>
    <enterprise-beans>
       <entity>
          <ejb-name>ThingEJB</ejb-name>
          <home>mybeanpackage.ThingHomeRemote</home>
          <remote>mybeanpackage.ThingRemote</remote>
          <ejb-class>mybeanpackage.ThingBean</ejb-class>
...I haven't gotten very far yet (obviously), but does JBoss maybe use the classname automatically as the lookup string?

  • Worries about restarting RAC machines...

    Dear all,
I have install and configure RAC following hunter_rac10gr2_iscsi document. Everything is ok and running smoothly. BUT I have few doubts in restarting both nodes in RAC. I am not sure after giving a restart to the system, they will run properly or not. As vipca configure virtual IPs at run time only and if I restart the network services or machine the virtual IPs are not pingable and they are only in host file. This might create problems if i restart. There might be others that i might dont know.
Kindly help me to understand what options must be set and done on permanent basis be4 i give a restart to both machine? Like how to permanently configure virtual IPs and other requirements for RAC.
    Regards,
    Imran

    > I though by giving document reference, like hunter-rac10gr2_iscsi you will have an idea about the
    os and oracle verison
From the title we can only deduce that you're using 10r2 and SCSI drives. No mention to what patch set version is being used, whether OCFS and/or ASM is used, whether Oracle CRS is used or a vendor CRS stack, or even what o/s is used. Dealing with raw devices for example and not ASMlib, requires different startup settings to ensure that the raw devices are mapped correctly. Using Multipath is again a different config all together. Etc. Etc.
RAC is a complex s/w stack. Which is why giving a short but accurate breakdown of this stack (with version numbers) is important.

  • Newbie question about Premiere Elements Organizer

This is a pre-newbie – let’s say “virgin” question. If there is an answer already posted elsewhere, please send me a link.
I’m about to install Premiere Elements 9 to do some clip editing and animation from still images.  This would be my first attempt to edit clip or do some animation from still images, besides using Windows Media Maker with my HS students. However, I have been a pretty serious photographer for 20+ years with 1,000’s of images which I now work on in PS CS5 Extended and Lightroom 3. I use Adobe Bridge and LR library to catalogue and organize my images. I’d like to continue to use AB / LR Library to organize my new clips and projects. From reading Bill’s posts, it seems I can use Adobe Bridge, copy my original file, resize in Photoshop, and save in a new folder to use for a Premiere project. This would seem to be most intuitive way for me to work. I already have keywords, metadata, actions in PS… etc. But I think Bill is using Premiere Pro, while I’ll be installing Premiere Elements, which comes bundled with Elements Organizer. Do I need to install or use Elements Organizer? What are the advantages/disadvantages or EO?  I guess I’m a little worried about installing the programs and having EO automatically acquire images using presets/defaults that I don’t want to use as well as issues with subfolders, etc. I'm running Windows 7.
    Thanks
FYI- this is a great animation project

EO doesn't do much with the files themselves, just maintains links to the sources.
For folders you are best to use the folder view in EO to move them as it doesn't keep track of folder locations when changed in Windows Explorer. From the File options in Bridge I think that is pretty much the same.

I would like to get as much input as possible on the advantages/disadvantages of using EO vs say Adobe Bride from others who use Elements Organizer.
    Any insights would be appreciated.
Can anyone who has used both EO and AB comment on how EO handles missing (hidden) files, syncing issues, computer hanging up or crashing....etc?
I've only messed around a little with Bridge. But to me it seems lightening fast by comparison to EO. The features Albums and Tags in EO seem much the same as Collections and Keywords in Bridge.
EO has Face Recognition abilities - getting more sophisticated in each version. I've not seen this feature in Bridge.
By default EO allows you to open a file in any of:
    Photoshop
    Photoshop Elements
    Premiere Elements
A single used-defined application (I have mine set to ColorPilot).
Bridge only seems to link to Photoshop.
Missing files can be located manually or by allowing EO to search for them.

  • Basic question about numbers templates

    Hello
I am a new user to Numbers, and there is something that I don't understand with the templates.
When you move your mouse over the template icon, you can see the different sheets being offered for each template.
    So far so good.
For most of the templates, even the blank one, the last sheet shows a large pie chart. But it never shows up when I choose the template.
Where is the last sheet with the large pie chart?
I know I can just create a pie chart, but I'm wondering why you see this in the sheets preview for the templates, but you don't get it when you open the template.
    Thank you.

    Hi Wayne,
    Thanks for the response.
The sheet that I am talking about is this one:
As you can tell, this one is showing for the Blank template, but other templates show this too.
I never see it on the left side of the Numbers window. Why not?

  • Newbie Questions about LDAP "Is that what I want?"

Hi all. I'm working with a non-profit group. There are 3 of us in different states in the USA, all using Leopard on high speed internet connections.
Our biggest challenge is maintaining a mailing list. Right now we have a Numbers document on an iDisk. If someone needs to update it, they go to the iDisk, download the file, make the edit, and upload the new file. Obviously you can see the potential problems here.
We were looking at something like a hosted Filemaker database, but then I realized:
"Don't we basically just want to share an Address Book?" The answer is yes.
So I started thinking about the easiest way we could do that. I learned (a little) about LDAP which seems to be just what we need.
I was hoping that our webhost company supported LDAP, but they don't and it doesn't sound like they will any time soon.
So I started looking around for LDAP on OS X and kept running into OS X Server.
Long story short, for about the same as 2 years of paying for a hosted Filemaker DB (not to mention buying the Filemaker software), it looks like we could buy a Mac Mini (2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo w/ 2GB of RAM and 160GB hard drive) and a 10-client version of OS X Server.
Before I go ahead and recommend this, I'd like someone to sanity check my ideas, since 12 hours ago I didn't really know anything about any of this
    1) Will OS X Server run acceptably on the Mac Mini (realizing we aren't going to be punishing the thing, but mostly calendar and address books)?
    2) Is LDAP what I'm looking for or is there another better solution?
    3) Am I missing anything else?
    TjL
who would definitely wait until the other side of Macworld Expo before buying, just in case

The solution was to share my address book with other the other folks who are .Mac subscribers.
This meant not having to use LDAP/Mac OS X Server at all.
    Much cheaper solution.

  • Newbie question about vinyl noise reduction

    Dear folks,
I am entirely new to Audition (trying out the Mac beta), so if this question is entirely answered by other threads, please just point me in the right direction. Thanks!
I am transcribing all my vinyl albums (48KHz, 32 bit) as FLAC files and now I need to clean up the transcriptions. Both DeClicker and Noise Reduction (process) seem to do an excellent job at the default settings for each, but I am not sure of the best way to use them--
First, which order is it best to use them in; DeClicker first or Noise Reduction first?
Second, are the default settings ( threshold :30 and complexity:16 forDeClicker and 100%/40dB for Noise Reduction ) the best ones to be using in general? If not, what qualities, audible or otherwise should I be looking/listening forto help me figure out the best settings to use?
Third, any recommendations for help files or tutorials I should read on this subject?
    Thanks for your help!
    Ctein

    Ctein wrote:
If I understand you correctly, you're recommending two passes with the Noise reduction process-- one with a large FFT followed by one with a smaller FFT sample size, right? The default for the process is a 4K sample window, with windows from 0.5K to 16K available. What values would you recommend for the two passes, and what NR percentages and dB "reduce by's" would you recommend for each pass.
Yes you understand correctly, but it's rather difficult to say how much to use in any given situation, because it depends entirely on the condition of the original recording. The basic rule is 'as little as you can to achieve an acceptable result', whatever FFT size you are using. As for sizes, the 4k is fine for the LF pass (you might want to look at adjusting the blue line to shape it so that it only attacks the bass, as well) and 16k is fine for everything else.
In some ways it's easier to talk about what is a realistic end result to achieve, than actual reduction numbers. Realistically, you should be able to get vinyl noise floors down to around minus 60-65dB, assuming that your signals get close to 0dB peaks. But with some older records, you may well not get this far before things start to sound rather 'fake' because you've over-processed the results. Often it's better to monitor the results on a pair of headphones rather than speakers - you'll hear more low-level detail, and have a better idea of how much processing you can get away with.
Yes, RX2 is pretty damn good - as good as you can get, in fact. But for vinyl, with care you can definitely get good results with Audition, but it takes more effort, especially with the NR. What actually makes RX2 good is that the multiple pass part of the processing is done for you by the software, and that's the major difference - other than that, the basic algorithms are quite similar. But, it costs an arm and a leg, so unless you have a massive amount to do, or somebody's paying you to do this, it's a dubious investment.

  • About Numbers

    Hi.
I am trying to understand floating points in Java. Ive read they can be expressed as elements of the normal value set or as elements of the extended-exponent value set.
But sun explains the extended-exponent set in a difficult way...Im not getting.
This is Suns explanation(look for extended-exponent value set)
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/third_edition/html/typesValues.html#4.2.3
Anyone knows a good site that can explain that in a easy way
    thanxs

The classic article on modern "floating point" numbers is
"What Every Computer Scientist Should Know About Floating-Point Arithmetic"
    http://docs.sun.com/source/806-3568/ncg_goldberg.html
All modern CPUs implement exactly the same floating point standard:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_754
So "float" and "double" in C, C++, and Java are all the same.
Google if you need more info.

Hi Karen and welcome to Discussions,
The only reason I want to use Windows is to be able to download games from the internet that are not made for Mac only for PC and I have a few questions:
    1. Doing all this installation will anything made for PC work?
Nearly anything. There are some Windows programs using hardware dongles that don't run.
    2. I only have Windows XP will that work? And then do all the SP updates after it's installed?
You need a Windows XP CD with at least Service Pack 2 (SP2) incorporated.
    3. If I have to use Windows XP SP2 is this one a good one to buy?
    http://www.cdsfu.com/index.php?categoryID=87
another user round here had already asked about that website.
Three things about this offer are, at least to me, very suspicious:
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition With SP2, Full Version on CDR"
Microsoft never has used CD-R disc (CD-Recordable) for Windows
"software that does NOT include any COA label or a sticker from the manufacturer"
There always has to be a sticker, that one puts on the computer on which the Windows license is installed and a COA label as well.
    "VOLUME LICENSE INCLUDED"
A volume license, from my understanding, was only sold to companys, who install Windows on a larger scale (hundreds of computers) and for that purpose are given only one license-key for all installations.
Usually this is known as a'corporate license'.
All in all, I would personally stay away from this offer. It simply doesn't sound legal to me.
    4. After everything is installed do I have to use an anti-virus?
When running Windows a decent Anti-Virus software is a must.
I want to thank you for your help as you can see I really am a newbie.
You're welcome anytime. Hope it helps.

Since ive installed winxp it’s been freezing randomly and takes a while to boot up occasionally. I haven’t reset bios and ive not updated it either. I don’t know to much about bios so I don’t want to mess it up. All the bios settings are set to optimized default. Also im still yet to install winxp sp1a. Windows update wont install nor will directx. Apart from that everything is pretty much tip top. Do I have to change some bios settings or update the bios or something? Im a kinda newbie and this is the first pc ive built. specs are:

    Help would be much appreciated

im not using any raid or sata, just standard ata ide. ive not installed the nvidia raid drivers off the enclosed floppy cause i didnt think i'd need to. how to i know if its set to ide?. it says on the side of the psu: -12v (0.8A), +12v (17A). if i set the bios to safe defaults, wont ii loose performance? i want the best stable performance without overclocking. im not a total dummie for bios, i just dont know the advanced stuff i suppose. would it be a bad idea to install the latest version of bios?
