Newly Occuring CSS SSL Issue in Chrome, FF10, IE9 with L5 rules; 3 second delay, loss of L5 stickyness

We recently started suffering an issue with our CSS11501S-K9 units not performing URL stickiness on our SSL wrapped L5 rules.  I've spent dozens of manhours working on the problem, and have quite a bit of information to report, including a solution.  There is a high probability that anybody who uses SSL to an L5 rule on a CSS unit will become affected by this problem over the next few weeks/months as users update their browsers with new SSL patches.
We hadn't made any changes to our config in months, and eliminated hardware problems by testing a second unit.
Here are the exact symptoms we saw:
Browsers affected: Firefox 10, Chrome, IE9, others (and some earlier versions of IE depending on patch levels)
  Browsers not affected: FireFox 3.5, w3m 0.5.2, curl7.19.7
Impact 1: For SSL Rules backed by L5 rules, the initial response to the first request would be 3 seconds.  Further requests on the same TCP connection would not be delayed
Impact 2: L5 rules being accessed via SSL would nolonger perform any URL based stickiness.  Accessing the same rule skipping SSL, would work fine
I focused on the 3 second delay, since that was a new issue and was easier to debug than monitoring multiple servers to see if stickiness was broken.  This is what I found when a client tries to connect to an SSL rule that ultimately is routed to a L5 HTTP rule:
1. Client/CSS perform initial TLS handshake, crypto cyphers determined (nearly instantly)
2. Client sends HTTP 1.1 request for resource (nearly instantly)
3. 3 seconds of no traffic in our out of the CSS related to this request
4. CSS opens an HTTP connection to backend webserver, backend webserver responds (nearly instantly)
5. The CSS seems to route to the backend server using the balance method (round-robin) instead of the advanced-balance method (url)
6. Response is sent to the client with the resource (nearly instantly)
7. Future requests sent from the browser on the same TCP connection have no delay, but the advanced-balance continues to be ignored
The 3 seconds is quite an exact figure (within a few milliseconds) and appears to be entirely happening inside of the CSS unit itself, since it does not connect to the backend server until after the 3 seconds elapse.  3 seconds smelled like some sort of internal timeout set in the CSS unit after it gives up waiting for something.
Looking at the packets from affected browsers I discovered that the GET /foobar HTTP/1.1 request was being broken into two separate TLSv1 application messages, the first was 24 bytes and the second was 400 bytes.  Decrypting these messages I found the first message was a
G
and the second message was:
ET /foobar HTTP/1.1
This essentially splits the initial request the client is sending into two pieces.  This confuses wireshark so much, it doesn't decode this as a HTTP request, and just decodes it as "continuation or non-HTTP traffic".
On the working browsers I saw only one TLSv1 application message, decrypting it I saw:
GET /foobar HTTP/1.1
(obviously I'm simplifying the contents of the request, there were lots of headers and stuff)
I am aware that the CSS can't handle L5 rules appropriately if they get fragmented, so I suspected this was the problem.  I pulled a packet trace from a few years ago, and at that time confirmed we never saw a double TLSv1 application messages before.
A number of openssl vulnerabilities were recently fixed: http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-1357-1
and browsers may have been recently updated to fix some of these issues, changing the way they encode their traffic.
Solution:
Our ssl config looked something like this:
ssl-proxy-list SSL_ACCEL
  ssl-server 10 vip address XX.XX.XX.XX
  ssl-server 10 rsakey XXXX
  ssl-server 10 cipher rsa-with-3des-ede-cbc-sha XX.XX.XX.XX 80
  ssl-server 10 cipher rsa-with-rc4-128-sha XX.XX.XX.XX 80
  ssl-server 10 cipher rsa-with-rc4-128-md5 XX.XX.XX.XX 80
  ssl-server 10 unclean-shutdown
  ssl-server 10 rsacert XXXXXX
Removing:
  ssl-server 10 cipher rsa-with-3des-ede-cbc-sha XX.XX.XX.XX 80
Solves the problem.  After that's removed, the browsers will nolonger fragment the first character of their request into a separate TLSv1 message.  The 3 second delay goes away, and L5 stickiness is fixed.  The "CBC" in the cyper refers to Cypher-Block-Chaining (a great article here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cipher-block_chaining), and breaking the payload into multiple packages may have been an attempt to initialize the IV for encryption -- although I'm really just guessing, I stopped researching once I verified this solution was acceptable.
This issue became serious enough for us to notice first on Monday Feb 13th 2012. We believe a number of our large customers distributed workstation updates over the weekend.  The customers affected were using IE7, although my personal IE7 test workstation did not appear to be affected.  It's quite possible our customers were going through an SSL proxy.  I suspect as more people upgrade their browsers, this will become a more serious issue for CSS users, and I hope this saves somebody a huge headache and problems with their production environment.
-Joe

Hi Joe,
That's a very good analysis you did.
As you already suspected, the issue comes from the TLS record fragmentation feature that was introduced in the latest browser versions to overcome a SSL vulnerability (http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/864643). Unfortunately, similar issues are happening with multiple products.
For CSS, the bug tracking this issue is CSCtx68270. The development team is actively working on a fix for it, which should be available (in an interim software release, so to get it you wil have to go through TAC) in the next couple of weeks
In the meantime, as workaround, you can configure the CSS to use only RC4 cyphers (which is what you were suggesting also). These are not affected by the vulnerability, so, browsers don't apply the record fragmentation when they are in use. This workaround has been tested by several customers already, and the results seem to be very positive.
Regards
Daniel

Well, you're not using position:absolute, so you've got a big thumbs up from a bunch of us for that.
Is there any chance you could post a link to this page on your server? It's much easier to troubleshoot from a browser than it is to rebuild the page from code fragments.
If you haven't gone live with the page yet, create a folder called TEST in your site and save copies of the page and css there. Upload TEST and post a link to it here. Once the problem is found/fixed, delete TEST from the server.
You can also attempt to use Firefox or Chrome to find your issue by right clicking > Inspect Element. All CSS that affects a given element will be displayed with file name and line numbers there.

    Hi,
Since I installed a few updates, that I can't access the sharepoint the same way. I always get errors when trying to access the majority of the pages.
I already removed the update suggested on other threads (KB2844286), but everything remains the same.
I always receive errors like this one:

what can I do? The Sharepoint 2010 is located on a virtual partition of our server, running Windows Server 2008 Standard edition SP1.
When I try to access administration tools it happens the same error, and I don't know what I can do more.

  • Menu Issues in Chrome

Hello - I've seen a few other threads about the Contents/Index menus not displaying in IE 10... but I'm having the issue in Chrome (28.0.1500.71) and it's working fine in Firefox (22.0) and IE 9/10. Using RoboHelp 10. The Contents, Index, Search menu headers display, but the actual menus themselves do not, just a nice big white space. Since this only seems to be happening in chrome I'm guessing it's not the same issue that has been reported in IE 10... but please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Tested on multiple computers (all running the same version of Chrome) and all have the same behavior.
Any ideas or help is appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Try this link.
    http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/rh_tour/index.htm
There is no Index but see if TOC works. That was created with Rh10.
Also try generating an output from one of the sample projects. Click Open on the RoboHelp Starter page and then click Samples in the ribbon on the left.
I have also tested some locally installed help and that is OK.
Final test is to create a new project with just a few topics and see how that works.
Hopefully that will narrow things down to your project rather than the environment or Rh and we can progress from there.

  • CSS/SSL termination - cypher negotiation Q

    Hi everyone
question regarding SSL termination on CSS/SSL module.
I have several several cyphers in my ssl-proxy list,
What is the algorithm to choose the cypher ?
I may assume that CSS and browser negotiate it during SSL session establishing.
The testing shows that same browser gets different cyphers when it hits
different CSSs (cyphers are in the same order in proxy-lists on CSSs)
    Thanks
    Alex

    Alex,
    it's not really an algorithm.
The browser selects the first cipher that matches its requirements in the list presented by the server/CSS.
The CSS builds a list in the order of weight.
If you did not specify any weight, the list can be random depending in which order you entered the command.
I would say, if you want a specific cipher to be selected, use a highest weight for this cipher.

  • CSS SSL

I have a CSS11501 and the decision has been made to load the certificates on the servers instead of using the load balancer ssl module. Is this possible? The ssl termination point will be the servers instead of the css. I don't feel that this is the best way to go, but mgmt does. Can someone please point me in the right direction.
    Thanks!

As Jeramy mentioned the configuration you have provided will work. However, the services do not require the "port 443" NAT rule to be hardset(services will inherit the port defined within the content rule), the keep-alive check for the services you created are using the default ICMP check, and what would be the reason for the group rule? Do you wish to perform internal load balancing with this rule?
The group rule will SNAT all client requests to appear as the 192.168.20.4 VIP address. Even though the CSS does not support the X-Forwarded-For HTTP option you can accomplish the same thing and be able to hit your VIP internally while preserving the client IP addresses by using ACLs on the CSS.

  • How many CSS SSL certificates needed?

From reading the CSS SSL Configuration Guide, it seems that one certificate is needed for each virtual SSL server (or VIP), regardless of how many servers are being load-balanced behind that VIP, but that is not made very clear. Also, it appears that a separate certificate is required for each virtual SSL server. Can someone please confirm or correct this for me? Thank You.

A quick (I hope) follow-up question on this...
Given multiple domain names being load-balanced by a CSS with a single SSL module, would I need different key and cert associations? I am thinking of something like this:
    ssl associate rsakey prodkey prodkey.pem
    ssl associate cert prodcert prodcert.pem
    ssl associate dhparam proddh proddh.pem
    ssl associate rsakey intkey intkey.pem
    ssl associate cert intcert intcert.pem
    ssl associate dhparam intdh intdh.pem

  • GSS/CSS Misc Issues

    Folks,
Please help me out here as I am about to bang my head against the door :-)
    1. Do you guys know that CSS with content rule having application ssl or content rule with url "*/" (layer 5 content rule) replies to port ping. GSS is configured to send tcp 443 to a VIP and it always respond though backend services are dead!!
    2. From 1, if this behaviour is true, how do I'll able to detect VIP failure using GSS?
    3. KAL-AP keepalives on GSS! how they work or able to detect failures for VIPs with same ip address but different ports! Say I have VIP 1.1.1.1 configured for port 80 and port 443. I am using KAL-AP on GSS, how GSS will know whether port 443 is down or 80.
    Thanks in advance,
    Shahid

First of all, I am by no means an expert in GSS, but, hopefully I'll be able to help a bit...
Your questions seem to hinge on 1 particular problem: VIP is still up although the back-end service(s) is/are down, caused by keepalive reporting active server(s).
Now, based on my understanding of the CSS and GSS, CSS is really the one responsible to make sure if a VIP is up or down, not the GSS. GSS only polls the VIP(s) to see if it's up/down/loaded. So, the solution to your problem should lie in your CSS implementation.
In our CSS implementation, we have also found that sometimes when the backend services are down, the CSS still reports the VIP being up. The primary cause of this problem has been the keepalive using a basic TCP polling. Consider this, an web application running on a web server may be down, but the web service itself is still up. In this situation, when you configure a keepalive to poll on TCP 80, it will be successful. This is normal, because the web service itself (which listens on TCP 80) is still up.
One possible solution to the problem is for the app developer to come up with a keepalive within the app itself, that generates a specific web page (say alive.html). Now, you can then configure a CSS keepalive to check the existence of this file. If the file does not exist, then the keepalive will fail, hence the VIP will be down.
    Just my 2cents.
    Cheers

  • Webrtc connection issue from chrome to firefox

In my webrtc video application when there is always a connection issue from chrome to firefox.
If the user on Firefox joins first to the room and the 2nd user on chrome joins second then ther is no issue. It connects smoothly.
But in the reverse case there is a connection but no audio and video.
You can check the app at : https://uc.connectuscom.com/video/#k9EBX8xd#Video
open one instance of this this link on chrome and then another on Firefox to reproduce the issue. Use 2 separate machines to avoid the issue of camera availability for the browsers.

  • Weird CSS forwarding Issue

    Hi all.
I am having some weird forwarding issue using a pair of 11503 CSS (Box-to-box redundancy).
Here is my L3 network topology:
    Internet
    |
    | CP FW-1 |
    |
    |
    |6500-Sup720|
    |
    |
    | CSS 11503 |
    |
    |
    |
    Client
I have drawn only one device because redundancy is achieved via HSRP on 6500, Active/Standby on CSS.
Moreover, L2 connectivity is provided by 2 4507 (CSS are connected 1 x 4500 on different vlans), connected to the 6500 via gigabit fiber connections.
A LDAP server is located on the internet and when the client tries to issue an LDAP query, it could take up to 2 minutes to have the reply back (20 seconds in the best cases). If I move the L3 on the 4500 or the 6500, the request takes form 1 to 2 seconds to complete.
We have tried both CSS, both 4500, both 6500, different clients with the same results. We upgraded the WebNS to the latest release (7.50.004). We changed physical cables, physical ports on CSS and switches, moved clients on other vlans on CSS, 4500 and 6500 and the results are always the same.
Neither errors on CSS interfaces, nor on 4500 interfaces, nor on 6500 interfaces.
I captured traffic via snoop on the Sun Client, and also with monitoring session on catalyst 4500, and when the CSS is routing, I can see lots of duplicate acks, tcp out of sequence, retransmissions which disappear when routing is performed by 6500 or 4500.
I was wondering if there is anything connected to the L3 1500 bytes size of every frames (the query produces an output of about 600k). We are at the L3 MTU limit... We also tried with ftp, but in that case everything was fine also with CSS. It looks like there something ldap related at least. The ldap query is a normal query, tcp port 389. The command come and go very well, the actual data transfer produces all the crappy tcp output (retransmission, lost segments ecc...).
I am very confused, CSS is not balancing, it's only forwarding traffic.
Sorry for my long post, any help will be really appreciated!
    Regards
    Massimo Magnani.

From your statements i understand that you want to know how to load balance using CSS. Content rules are where the CSS's load balancing features are customized, virtual IP address are defined, and where the actual servers (called services) are bound to that virtual IP address. Content rules allow you to specify load balancing types, sticky methods, port specific Virtual IP addresses, and a host of other features Refer to the following URL to understand how CSS load balancing works and how CSS load balancing can be configured.

  • Using CSS and Javascript to display a div with flash in it, mozilla reloads the flash file!

I am using CSS and Javascript to display a div with an
embedded flash object in it. Mozilla Firefox reloads the flash file
when the div is displayed! (I dont want this to happen, as it's
unexpected functionality, my expectation would be that the flash
file would not change it's state at all, and would remain in
whatever state it was left in.)
I was wondering if anyone has come across this issue and is
there something I can do to prevent this from occurring?
To be more specific, I have a single HTML page with 8 flash
files embedded in it (yeah I know, it's a bit much). I am then
using CSS and Javascript to display (via a numbered link (with an
id)) an equivalent numbered div tag containing the flash file.
Mozilla Firefox reloads the flash object that is in the div.
Internet Explorer will not do this and will instead, load the flash
object only upon initial view of the flash object. All subsequent
links (in IE) will NOT reload the flash object on the page. I'm
guessing this is some kind of difference in the flash player as an
Active X object and the plugin, or is it just IE being clever? Or
    am I way off?
    Anyway, here is the code...

Compatible issues firefox v37.0.2 with att yahoo mail
Hello: this is my first post, hope I am doing it properly.
I am using W7pro OS and ATT DSL 3.0Mbps dl
I noticed this week that I was unable to save attachments from my ATT Yahoo mail I could view them but no choice as to ware to save them--only choice (save to my comp.)But no ware to be found.
I reinstalled v 36.0.4-preventing auto upgrade-But still had same problem.
At this point contacted ATT support supervisor-we spent about 4hr working on problem--He was using your v 31.5.0--and had no problem accessing and saving attachments using remolt access on my comp.
We also found using my comp.FF v 36.0.4 & v 37.0.2 browser, that we could without any problems access an save attachments--AOL mail-- & mail2web.--& IE--Even when forwarding inaccessible mail to above sites.
He informed me that (ATT mail Yahoo)only uses resources to make them compatible with--Google IE & Chrome &Apple? (basically he was saying, that they would NOT commit resources to FF--any version)BUT he was not allowed to commit.
PS: The last time I know it worked ok was 3-18-15 I have 3 comp.2 wxp pro 1 w7 pro the same problem on all 3--so feel confident not OS related-but compatible problems with FF & yahoo mail.
The ATT support supervisor-was unable to determined the date they may have made changes on their site.without extensive research-which we decided wasn't worth the effort as they wouldn't look in to it.
I hope someone or FF will be able find a workaround-as I do not want to use the browsers they suggest. I LOVE FF.
    Thank You Gary

I have no idea what you are asking me to do ??--can you explain at a dummy
    level--I wont be offended.

Open the visual Studio and navigate to the feature XML file and add the bellow attribute.
    AlwaysForceInstall="TRUE"
The <FeatureName>.Template.Xml output would be some think link this.
