Ni elvis oscilloscope vi in labview

Hello,
I'm using NI ELVIS and Labview to drive a remote labratory over the internet.
For this reason, I'm using the ELVIS source VI's running in labview, and not the elvis panel.
When using the VI source code for the oscilloscope, the time division function does not work properly.
When adjusting the time division, the waveform is not squeezed or stretched as it normally would.
The waveform stays the same, and the time division lines move!   And if I decrease the time division below a certain value, the display itself shrinks.
What should I do about this problem?
You can veiw the distance VI's here:
http://elvis-test.cecn.sabo.mtu.edu/oscope_test.html
I did not change the source code in any way, except for moving the "Help" buttons out of the veiw of the user.   (These are useless for the remote users.)

Hello,
When you installed NI-ELVIS library under LabVIEW 8.2, those
VIs were complied for that version of
LabVIEW.  You can always open a VI in a
newer version of LabVIEW but you can not open a VI in an older version of
LabVIEW.
Do you have both LabVIEW 7.1 and 8.2 installed on your
computer at the same time?  Have you installed
the NI-ELVIS VIs for LabVIEW 7.1?
You may have installed the NI-ELVIS for LabVIEW 8.2 and not
for LabVIEW 7.1.  Those VIs are probably
complied with LabVIEW 8.2 and LabVIEW 7.1 is unable to understand how to open or
run those VIs.
What errors are you getting when you try to use Firefox?  Both LabVIEW 7.1 & 8.2 should be able to
display remote front panels in Firefox.  Here
is a great KnowledgeBase that describes why you might be getting some plugin
errors with Firefox.

  • What is the proper way to set up an encoder on an Elvis prototyping board with Labview 2010?

I am using a PCI-6024E with an Elvis I and MCU Project Board. I've tried using the quadratureencoderm-series.vi as well as experimenting with the counter channels in the Measurement and Automation Explorer; however I have been unable to find the proper channels to read the data from this encoder. I'm having trouble configuring the counter to work properly. Can anyone tell me which pins I should be connecting the encoder signals to? I've attached a datasheet for the motor and the encoder. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi jns0086,
I see your problem.  I believe that example was written using Traditional DAQ, a set of drivers and functions that have since been replaced by DAQmx. What version of LabVIEW and Windows are you using?  There are some compatibility issues depending on your version on LabVIEW and your operating system.
In the meantime, if you have everything connected properly, you should be able to count your edges using one of the built-in LabVIEW examples.  Go to Help>Example Finder and then browse for Hardware Input and Output > DAQmx > Counter Measurements > Count Digital Events > Count Digital Events.vi.  See if that helps.
    Have a great day,

  • Will the ELVIS board work with LabVIEW 2010 Student Edition?

I recently acquired a traditional ELVIS board (with the PCI DAQ board). So far I've only installed the evaluation for LabVIEW 2010 (x64), and when I attempt to install the ELVIS Traditional 3.0.5 software I get the following message: "This installer requires LabVIEW 8.5 Full Development system or later to be present on this computer. LabVIEW Base Development System in any version of LabVIEW is not supported. Please install LabVIEW and then run the NI ELVIS installer again."
I am eligible to purchase a student license for LabVIEW 2010 and would like to know if the ELVIS Traditional 3.0.5 software will install after I've acquired a student license.
I am running windows 7 (x64) with an evaluation version of LabVIEW 2010 (x64).
    Solved!

Perhaps I spoke too soon. I purchased a student license for LabVIEW 2010 and am still receiving the same error. I've provided screenshots of my license and the message from the ELVIS Traditional 3.0.5 installer.

  • How Multisim, ELVIS 2+ Board, and Labview All Connect

My school recently obtained some ELVIS 2+ boards and I have been tasked with figuring out exactly what they can do and how we can incorporate them into the curriculum as part of my work study.  Now I have all the basics down for building a circuit on the ELVIS, getting measurements and controlling inputs on the computer etc.  I would like to delve deeper into what the full potential of this device is by integrating it with multisim and Labview.  My question is, is it possible to construct a circuit (or partial circuit) in multisim and then send the output of said circuit to the ELVIS board where it could feed into an actual circuit.  For example, could I build a voltage supply virtually in multisim, and output the voltage to a specific pin on the ELVIS board where I could wire it into my built circuit?  Along the same lines, could I build a circuit on the board and send the output of the circuit to a program in Labview?  Is this board capable for such things or is its connections to labview and multisim just used as a comparison tool for real life readings and simulated readings?  What is the full potential of this board?

    Hello,
Glad to hear about you work with NI ELVIS. The integration between ELVIS and Multisim is limited to running circuit simulations and then comparing results with the real circuit, in other words, you can compare simulated vs real measurements; this is a great approach to circuits education.
Now, if you want to have more control of the inputs/outputs available on NI ELVIS, then LabVIEW is the perfect fit. In LabVIEW you can use the NI ELVISmx Express VIs to configure settings for all the instruments. Furthermore, NI ELVIS is supported by the NI-DAQmx driver, therefore you can use the NI-DAQmx functions to acquire signals from the analog inputs, generate signals in the analog outputs, access the digital I/O and program general counter/timing functionality.
Visit the NI ELVIS & NI myDAQ Instruments and Applications community to learn more about the integration between ELVIS and LabVIEW; in this page you will find some ready-to-use applications.
    Hope this helps!

  • Error in ELVIS Oscilloscope Readings

    Hello,
We are running ELVIS Traditional software and are using the origional ELVIS units.
We are getting some erroneous readings on the oscilloscope.
When we input a square wave into the scope directly into Channel A, it displays fine.
But Channel B shows an output (shown in attachment) whether a probe is attached to the BNC connector or not.
If we turn Channel A off, Channel B goes to 0V as it should.
We never had this problem before and it is happening on all of the ELVIS units in our lab.
Could it be a software problem?
    Thanks,

    Hello Tom,
It looks like you are seeing an artifact of multichannel settling. In the original ELVIS, the scope channels are routed to analog inputs on your DAQ card (the PCI or USB device). That DAQ card has a single Analog to Digital Converter, so if you want to measure more than one channel, it uses a multiplexer to route each input (one at a time) to the ADC. When the multiplexer switches to a new channel, the signal on the input drives the ADC to its voltage.
The problem happens when the source impedance of a channel is very high (or infinitely high in the case when nothing is connected). A high-impedance source doesn't have enough time to dissipate the charge on the ADC from the last channel, so you see crosstalk from one channel to the next.
For example, when Channel A is driving +10V and Channel B is open, the ADC charges up to +10V while the switch is connected to Channel A. When it changes over to Channel B, there's nothing driving it and nothing to dissipate the charge left over from the +10V signal, so Channel B appears to measure +10V also.
The situation is exacerbated by scanning quickly. If you slow down the acquisition rate (timebase adjustment in the ELVIS Scope), the effect will get smaller -- although an open channel will take a long time to discharge the ADC.
There's a more thorough explanation of this phenomenon in the MIO manuals. Check out page 4-7 under Chapter 4 of the M-Series manual:
    http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/371022k.pdf
In ELVIS II, we added scope buffers. These are unity-gain amplifiers that drive the inputs of the multiplexer. In that case, it doesn't matter what the source impedance is that you hook up to the inputs, we'll always drive the multiplexer with a low impedance. Additionally, there is a 1 MOhm input impedance to ground. That gives you a proper divider with 10x attenuating probes and also reliably discharges floating inputs back to 0 V. You could add these circuits on your ELVIS 1 protoboard if you need attenuated probes or want better settling behavior.
    I hope this is helpful.

  • Elvis: Is It possible to use the Function Generator and the Oscilloscope simultaneously?

    Hi,
We are using the NI Elvis to output a function or a sine wave at a certain frequency and using the oscilloscope on the same board/elvis to read a modified signal. Is this possible? Can we use both the Function Generator and the oscilloscope at the same time? Please help. The oscilloscope would be reading signal from an accelerometer. Thank you in advance. We have no VI as we do not know which to use and if they are possible.

    Hi,
There is no problem using the Function Generator and Oscilloscope
at the same time with NI ELVIS. Using the NI ELVIS soft front panels (Start
    >> Programs >> National Instruments >> NI ELVIS 3.0 >>
NI ELVIS – see picture attached –‘NI ELVIS soft front panels.JPG’), you can choose
to open more than one instrument at a time. We do this by opening one
instrument, allowing it to begin, and then opening another. We can also program
in LabVIEW using more than one instrument at a time by placing down multiple
Express VI’s taken from the NI ELVIS pallet on the block diagram (see picture
attached – ‘ELVIS Express VI's (LabVIEW).JPG’). One note when doing this,
    please see KB 41ODPHX1
for an example of how to program in parallel. If you do not wire the ‘stop’
terminal of the express VI’s, you will get the error described.

  • Measure current and voltage in Elvis and labview

Hi!  We're setting up a control system setup for class where we need to monitor the current and voltage that we are supplying/drawing from the ELVIS hardware within a LABVIEW setup.  So far, we can accurately display voltage input and outputs from the AI and DAO terminals respectively.  However, we can't seem to find a direct way measure current draw.  I believe that we are supposed to be able to get DMM readings from the AI5 channel, but either we're not doing it correctly, or we still need to place a known resistance across it (which we cannot do, due to variable loads).  Any advise please?
    Cheers,
    Gerald

Are you using Elvis I or II?  From your post, I will assume it is Elvis I but please correct me if this is not the case.  Page 38 of the manual shows that ACH5 is used for capacitor or diode measurements for the DMM.  To measure current, use the connectors on the front of the Elvis unit and then route the current HI/LO on the protoboard to either the oscilloscope or an analog input channel.  You can use the DMM Soft Front Panel to monitor current as well.

We are running the latest Labview 2010 on new computers (Windows 7) but have the older/oldest NI ELVIS hardware (NI ELVIS I?).

    Hello,
The ELVIS software installed fine and the ELVISmx Instrument Launcher runs fine.
However, when I try to run an instrument, we get the following error (See Attachment):
    Error -200220 occurred at ALVISmx_DAQmx
    Create Channel (AI-Voltage-basic).vic4
It seems that the software can't find the DAQ card which is directly hooked up to the ELVIS unit via a cable
    We aren't using USB.
I noticed that the newer ELVIS units use USB only.
Is there a setup to make it recognize the card?   There used run with the older ELVIS software when you clicked on Continue in the error box.
The PCI-6251 card checks out fine with MAX.
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • Oscilloscope, curve fitting , and other problems

I am working on a project for senior conference in chemistry. It involves thermal lensing, which is where a laser is passed through a colored solution. Blue solution absorbs at the wavelength of the laser and heats up. This causes the laser to be broadend and it is deflected from the detector. I have used labview and the ni elvis oscilloscope to display the data in a VI. The data appears as a series of exponential decays, because the chopper hits the laser and it causes the solution to cool down.
I have taken the natural log of the data and siplayed it in another graph. This makes the data from the exponential decay linear. Now, I want to take a section of this data, from y to y+n, and apply a linear fit and display it while it is collected. I also want to be able to take the slope of this line.
If anyone can explain how to do this I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if anyone has any information on where to find some oscilloscope VIs other than those from the NI example finder, that would be great to. Thank you for reading this, and feel free to offer any feedback.

    Hello,
The array subset function will allow you to extract a subset of your data array.
I'm not sure what version of LabVIEW you are using, but if it's 8.x then there are fitting functions you can use in the Mathematics -> Fitting palette.  There are also functions in 7.x for this.
Together those functions should allow you to fit a function to a subset of your data.
For additional examples or drivers for devices, you should search ni.com, the developer zone, and/or more specifically the instrument driver resources.

  • NI ELVIS II Freescale hardware required to run vi's to remove error 200559.

    Hi,
I read DAQmx tutorials, did all trouble shooting steps such as highlight execution, probes, and checked all sub vi’s for the security system main vi, etc as in the word attached file and also attached vi's in zip file. The vi's gives error of 200559 in my LabVIEW 2012 software. Make sure you must have NI ELVIS II hardware to test these vi’s.
If my this post is duplicate because no one either knows about my question, make my post abusive, and so, I have to put my post again as this is my right to get help for my question. I prefer and appreciate help from NI engineers and people, who are really nice to give their best knowledge, great opinions, helping through vi’s and screenshots for this error of 200559.

  • User interface that behaves like an oscilloscope

Is there any vi out there that can control a National Instruments
data acquisition board in a way that the user feels like he/she is
sitting in front of a simple analog oscilloscope? I have looked
for something like it on National Instruments homepage, but
    came up with nothing.

There is an example for both a 1 and 2 channel oscilloscope included with
LabVIEW. Go to Search Examples under the Help menu, pick Data Acquisition
    Examples - Software-Created Instruments.

  • I have problem running the inverted pendulum trainer using NI ELVIS.

i have a problem running the inverted pendulum trainer using NI ELVIS. While loading the NI ELVIS bypass VI it is unable to find the "enable communications bypass.vi". could anybody please attach the VI.
I am using NI ELVIS 2
    Thanks

The Enable Communications Bypass VI sounds like a VI that is only included with Traditional or legacy ELVIS designed to work with the first generation ELVIS unit, not the ELVIS II/II+ or myDAQ. It sounds like the inverted pendulum trainer you have is for use with ELVIS I. In the LabVIEW Loading dialog, do you see the full path for where it's looking for the VI? Can you provide that full path? If the inverted pendulum trainer is designed to work with the older ELVIS unit, there may be a newer version that supports ELVIS II.

    1.  You only need to initialize the scope once.  You not need to branch the VISA Resource wire.  Call the Initialize, Setup Channel 1, and then Setup Channel 2 all chained together.
    2.  Use Build Array to create your array of channels.  The Merge Signals is a completely backwards way to do it.
    3.  You only need to close the instrument once.
