"nice" command denied in terminal even as root user

Hello,
I am trying to run the "nice" command in terminal as an admin (me):
nice -n -19 /Users/Michael/Desktop/Minecraft.app
It failed with this error:
nice: /Users/Michael/Desktop/Minecraft.app: Permission denied
So I logged in a the root user and tried again and it still had the same error.
I have 2 main questions:
1, Why couldn't I run this command as a root user?
2. As an admin, shouldn't I have been able to run the command without logging in as the root user?

I hope it's ok if I bump.

Acrobat X Pro 10.1.10 has some problems since I installed MacOSX Mavericks (it refused to use a Gemalto certificat for signatures). I tried to upgrade it to 10.1.12. But was update is impossible to install (error 1301). I re-installed Acrobat Pro, as suggested. It did'nt fix the problem.  Then I tried to update with root user permissions (as also suggested by Adobe).  Still unsuccesfull, ever the same 1301 error.

This seems like a corrupt image.
Try to download this again and doublecheck that you are selecting the correct OS.
Otherwise ask Oracle to ship the DVD's/CD's.

  • Mountain Lion won't allow me to enable root user

Hi, I'm new to everything Mac, but I'm trying to learn.  Just purchased a used mid-2011 iMac from an individual.  I love the iMac.  Just a few kinks to work out.  One is that he had originally named either the user account or home directory (I still can't figure out which) and i'd like to change that name.  I found an Apple support article on this (Article HT1428) and I am hopeful it will work for me.  However, the first step is to enable the root user.  I went to Article PH11331 to follow steps to enable the root user.  However, when I select Edit from within the Directory Utility, I am unable to select "Enable Root User", or even "Disable Root User" or "Change Root Password" for that matter.  These options are either not there or are greyed out ("Enable Root User" is greyed out).  So I have failed to even jump the first hurdle (enabling root user) towards my goal of changing the user account or home directory name (sorry I don't know which is which).  Can anyone offer some advice please?  Thanks!

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.

Hello I am on a macbook pro (retina IOS 9) i have installed xcodes and command line tools but codeblocks does not compile, terminal gives this message /Users/MacPc/Desktop/Untitled1: Permission denied      any one has a solution?? please...

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • After enabling root user terminal won't do anything at all.

I enabled the root user with Directory Utility. this all workedfine untill I opened up terminal and found that it would not do anything. it will not even loar the usual fields showing where the curent directory is or what user i'm loged in as ect. nothing seems to working and I can type but it will not execute commands. What can i do to fix this?

Besides answering X423424X's questons, it would be helpful if you would actually post any errors you are seeing in the terminal (Copy and Paste would be good).  As it is now we have to guess.
Also as X423424X says, enabling root in and of itself would not cause Terminal problems.

  • Autogroup patch 'breaks' "nice" command.

    Hi all,
I just had a look how the nice command works together with the autogroup patch. (See i.e. this discussion: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=108516, or the links at the end of the post).
While the default behaviour is consistent, it is rather annoying:
Nice works only inside a group, while my processes (i.e. compilation + some foreground task) run typically in different groups.
I hope someone can explain to me, what I am doing wrong. Processes are grouped by Session ID, and I get the following behaviour:
For me process priorities work now as follows:
    - run several commands with different niceness levels from the same terminal: CPU time is divided according to niceness.
    - run several commands with different niceness levels from different terminals:  Every command gets the same amount of CPU.
    - run several commands with different niceness levels in the same terminal, and run more processes with different niceness levels in different terminals: CPU time is first divided between the terminals evenly, and then subdivided according to niceness.
Running several commands from the GUI works the same as running from different terminals, i.e. the SID is different, and niceness is therefore ignored.
I start X and login using inittab and lxdm.
An easy 'fix' for this is disabling autogroup support:
    echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/sched_autogroup_enabled
    Links on autogroup patch/cgroups:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cgroups
    http://lwn.net/Articles/418884/

I can no longer duplicate the problem. The patch 125285-04 has been applied. Here are the cases. For one V210 host, the command "updatemanager" was aborting in real time on Friday. I had not removed the patch 125285-04 from it. Today, I tried it Tuesday and it worked. I cannot explain why unless the reboot on Monday cleared up something.
For the host where I had unapplied patch 125285-04, I re-applied it and manually ran the command "/usr/bin/fc-cache -f". Now running the "updatemanager" works. I cannot duplicate this problem today.
I only use updatemanager on these hosts for patching. I have not tried other commands that used GUI fonts/JAVA/etc.

  • Run the "nice" command on startup?

    Hi all,
Since I've experienced overheating problems, I've dug a little and discovered this wonderful "nice" command, that's currently letting me install Windows 7 on a VM thanks to VirtualBox without turning my logic board into a critter. My question is, is there a way (and a good reason) to run this command right after booting up, say via AppleScript? I haven't noticed any sluggish behavior when running this command, but right now, VirtualBox is running, and my temp censor displays readings oscillating between 60°C and 70°C, far below the 120°C I've noted yesterday, right before my MBP shut down from exhaustion...
    So, how-to...?
Message was edited by: Didier Caizergues

Get more memory. My system started paging like crazy when running Virtual PC.
The point of this topic was, how do I automatize this running "nice" in Terminal. I already added Terminal to my Startup Items, but it merely opens at the prompt, and I have to manually enter "nice", then return, to enter "nice mode". Haven't thought of typing "renice" since I started using this function...
You can invoke terminal ( unix ) commands from an applescript program. I am not familiar with nice, but the following applescript file did start up Windows. I could not figure out whether or not the nice command did anything.
The first thing that you need to do is to make the text into an AppleScript program.
    Start the AppleScript Editor
    /Applications/AppleScript/Script Editor.app
In Snow Leopard it's at: /Applications/Utilities/AppleScript Editor
Copy the script text to the Applescript editor.
Save the text to a file as an application and do not check any of the boxes below.
If you want access to the script from your Script Menu, move the script (the saved script application file) to your
~/Library/Scripts folder. You can also drag it to your Dock or make an alias for it on the Desktop.
-- Write a message into the event log.
-- To see this output, run from script editor after clicking on Event Log tab.
    log "  --- Starting on " & ((current date) as string) & " --- "
set my text item delimiters to ", "
    try
set theFile to escapeString("/Users/mac/Documents/virtual pc version-7.0/Windows XP Professional.vpc7")
       log theFile
set see to "nice -n 5 open " & theFile
       log "see= " & see
set results to do shell script see
    on error
display dialog "error results for " & see
    end try
    on escapeString(thisString)
       set thisString to alterString(thisString, "\\", "\\\\")
       set thisString to alterString(thisString, " ", "\\ ")
set thisString to alterString(thisString, quote, "\\" & quote)
    end escapeString
    on alterString(thisText, delim, replacement)
       set resultList to {}
       set {tid, my text item delimiters} to {my text item delimiters, delim}
       try
set resultList to every text item of thisText
set text item delimiters to replacement
set resultString to resultList as string
set my text item delimiters to tid
       on error
set my text item delimiters to tid
       end try
       return resultString

  • How do I disable root user? Code failed in terminal!

    Hi,
I've had numerous problems with my laptop ever since taking it in for repair to change the logic board middle of last year. Since then I've had problems with the RAM (both sticks have had to be changed twice), the logic board changed a second time AND the battery changed. The amount of trips I've had to take to apple stores are ridiculous.
To top it off I noticed that in the activity monitor there are numerous users other than myself running. The majority of users are root followed by _windowserver, _usbmuxd and _netbois. As about 50% of the users are root I decided to take a trip to an apple 'genius' bar to try and turn all users back to admin, the guy didn't have a clue what the root user was and said that it was fine...his answer was to reboot my laptop however my lacie hard drive recently broke and have no where to save my work.
So far ive tried two options to fix this myself but i am getting no where. Ive tried adding the code on the terminal via utilities but it says that its failed (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1636445) And theres no disable option via directory utility. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US)
Is there any other way I can fix this?
    Thanks.

It's normal to have a fair number of processes owned by root.
I should leave them alone if I were you.
