yes, it was nailed for gutbunny, but this did not nail it for me. situation: new 32 GB USB flash drive that was allowed to go to sleep with mac book pro 15" 2.33 using mac os 10.4.11. it woke up with no permissions to write to owner or admin user or root. did the following:

short answer is that neither admin george nor root can unlock this thumb drive. and i've tried this with lock/unlock in both positions. should i send it back to the mfgr for replacement?

  • Terminal and Root user

Hi, I am new to Mac, just bought a Macmini.
    1. I was trying to lanch multiple Terminal session, it seems I can not. Can I run multiple terminal or xterm etc?
    2. How do I switch to root, or what is the default root password? I was saying there are some process under root account.
I am an Unix guys for years.
    Thanks a lot.

    1. I was trying to lanch multiple Terminal session, it seems I can not. Can I run multiple terminal or xterm etc?
you just press command +N and it will open a new terminal shell. You can run many processes ontop of each other in different shells.
    2. How do I switch to root, or what is the default root password? I was saying there are some process under root account.
There is no default root password, you have to enable and create the root password. This is easy to do use the following command.
    sudo passwd root
Then to change to root in your terminal use the command
    su
However in most cases you don't need to login to your terminal as root as you can just use the 'sudo' command.

  • User's Desktop locked out and root user can't fix it

    check this out:
I've got a user on this machine that can't save anything to her desktop. The folder behaves like she has no write permissions, but a quick ls -al shows that the folder is owned by her, and her user has permissions to rwx . Even stranger, when I sudo su and try to issue a chmod for that folder, root is denied permission to do so. Stop me if I'm crazy, but isn't root God? Last time I checked, on a *nix based system, root can do anything it wants.
    :/Users/xxxxxx root# chmod 755 Desktop/
    chmod: Desktop/: Operation not permitted
    yep...even though I'm root...not allowed....

and the user xxxxxx can't even write to the folder even though the
    user has permission to....

  • Root user problem in OS 10.7

Logged in as root user without a hitch at first attempt.
After logging out and disabling root use, the next day I enabled root access again, and tried to log in using the same password.  Not accepted.
I have tried changing the password but nothing I try is accepted.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Try in Terminal:
    dsenableroot -d
    dsenableroot
Why are you logging in as root?

  • ARD and root user - how do I give access?

Any suggestions on how to set up ARD 3.0 access to a Mac OS X 10.3.9 computer which is running as root? When one goes to Sharing to set up ARD access the root user does not appear in the list of users even when it is enabled and the root user is loged in. BTW, I need this as the system is running as a 4D database and web server and (for the present) needs to be run in root to be visible to web clients.

"Because I need to view and manage an application
(4D Server) that is running in root."
Yes, I know. Giving an admin user ARD access has no
bearing on what user...in your case "root"...is
    logged into the computer.
Run 4D while logged in as root, but authenticate as
an Admin user for ARD access.
I am now back in my hospital and have tried what you suggest - and it works perfectly. So - very many thanks for providing the correct solution - I owe you a beer next time you are in England or I am in Chicago!

  • OSX, Firefox, and Multiple User Problems

    Hi
I posted this question over at Mozilla but no one could offer any tips, hope someone has an idea here.
I'm using OS X on a machine with mulitple users set up. When I created the users however, I duplicated everything from User1 to make the rest of the users.
Now when User2 is using Firefox and tries to download from a site such as Google Video, they get the following error... "file could not be saved because you cannot change the contents of that folder (User1's)"
I've tried changing the download location in User2's preferences, no luck. I've tried deleting User2's cookies, no luck.
What can I do to solve this? Can I slightly alter the Firefox preferences in User2's preferences folder to change this? I don't want to completely trash the preferences... wouldn't that destroy bookmarks and everything?
    Thanks for any help!

I am not certain if this will help or not but try logging in as the main user and using Firefox's preferences change the location of the downloads folder to the shared folder on the root level of the hard drive. Then try changing the preferences for user 2 while logged in as user 2 to use the same folder in the same location. That should allow user 2 to access the folder. Do the same for any other users. This action should make all downloads available to all users so it will not be secure.

    Hi,
Can anyone point me in the right direction.
I want to modify and ACL on a remote server, but i cannot assign a variable inside the invoke-command where i'm also refferencing an local variable.
When the first invoke-command is ran i get an error:
A Using variable cannot be retrieved. A Using variable can be used only with Invoke-Command, Start-Job, or InlineScript

if the script block is invoked on a remote computer.

    Hi RFalken,
you can use the -ArgumentList parameter of Invoke-Command like this:
    $script = {

    $Parameter2
    Invoke-Command -ScriptBlock $script -ArgumentList @(2,42)

  • What's the difference between the Admin and Root accounts in Mac OS X?

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Admin account and Root user option on Snow Leopard?
I've read on Network Security forums that I should have two accounts on my Macs (I'm the owner and only user), 1 for Admin controls / access and another for general use.  I was under the impression that I only needed one account, and even though it was specified as an "Admin" account I didn't really need to worry about it as I would still need to go into Directory Utility and "Enable Root User" to really allow a program to gain access / control of my Mac.
Can somebody please clear this up for me?
    Thanks in advance
    L Rembrandt

Root can do anything, without further authentication.  There is only one root account and it is disabled by default.
An admin user can do many things without further authentication, but can become root by authenticating with his own password.  There can be any number of admin users.
A standard (non-admin) user can only modify the contents of his own home folder, but can become and do admin and even root tasks by authenticating with an administrator's username and password, if he knows it.
Most security professionals recommend running with the fewest privileges as are necessary, elevating to the higher privilege only when needed, and returning to the lower privilege when the higher one is no longer needed.
Apple recommends running as a non-admin user all the time.  It is the best for security, and is convenient too, since nearly all admin and root tasks can be done from a non-admin account, simply by authenticating with an admin username/password when prompted.  I do admin and root tasks from my non-admin account all the time this way.  My admin account almost never gets used; it has been months since I actually logged in to it.
If you are not already using a non-admin account, it's easy to switch:  Just create a new account with admin privileges, and then remove admin privileges from your own account.

  • Sudo or su and root's password

A root's login prompt are simply without password prompt, I never typed root's password when I logged in as root. How to find the root's password, change it and use it with 'su' command? Visudo (Vi) has a very strange syntax for editing, I cannot edit sudoers file despite of reading man vi. Is there neccessary edit sudoers file with visudo to give the user some root's privilegues? • I've configured arch as root user, this gives problems as normal user

    Hi!
I've installed arch and openbox on my computer. Since "startx" only would start if I was in root
I've been configuring the whole system as root user. When I now try to start "startx" as normal
user it works and openbox starts up too... the problem is that all my configurations disappear.
Openbox, bmpanel, nitrogen etc. goes back to default settings. I guess it has something to do with
the rights my normal user has, but since I'm still kinda noob I really don't know what to do.
Anyone know what the problem might be?
    Thanks!

Now it seems the user rights on my computer are kinda... wrong. Since I've set up most of my system from root user
the user rights for my normal user are a bit off. All files in ~/ I have full access to, but other files can't even be
accessed using sudo. (I get something like "$USER don't have access to this file as root)
In ubuntu this was set up from the get go so I guess there's a kind of default user rights scheme that I can use as a
starting point and then configure it for my own use?? What files and folders should my user normally have access to,
what files and folders when using sudo, and what files and folders shouldn't $USER have access to at all?
    Thanks.

  • Root pass and key layout problems

Hello. There are two problems. The first is that when I use 'sudo' in terminal it is accept only my normal user password, not root??? Some programs like Shaman require root password.
And the second problem - my layout. I have 'us' and 'ru' layouts. It is working by click to keyboard indicator, but when I press Alt+Shift, both Alt's or Win key (there is my config) is nothing happens. I have only original EN locale - maybe the problem is it?
