Nice footage in FCP, but washed out in export

I've tried searching everywhere for a solution to this but I just don't know what to do anymore. I'm working with HD footage and when I export it to quicktime, most of the clips in the sequence become washed out, gain a bit of red color in certain areas, and/or become brighter. First, I thought this was due to the computer display, but after I brought it into DVD Studio Pro and created the DVD, the image looked the exact same way on my TV. Also, I had color corrected using the same TV and the image looked perfectly fine there.
I've tried experimenting with different settings. I tried compensating for the changes before exporting from FCP and by applying filters in Compressor, but it still never looks the same. I also tried changing the gamma correction in FCP's System Settings and enabling the "Final Cut Studio color compatability" option in Quicktime Pro (which did darken the footage a bit), but the image still looks a bit washed out and bright.
I put the DVD into a different computer (a PC) and it looked slightly better. I'm not sure why it looks so bad on my computer and TV.
I've never had this problem in the past, but I didn't have FCP 6, Quicktime 7.2 and wasn't working with HD back then either. I'm sure it probably had to do with the Quicktime update. Does anyone know of anything else that can be done? Has this problem been figured out yet or am I just overlooking something?
Thank you.

The field order of the clips are also set to none.

To make things more interesting, the interlacing follows a pattern. Three frames of non-interlaced shots, and then two frames of interlaced shots. Consistently.
Could this have something to do with my integrated graphics card?
Like I said, when the video is exported to a different format, the interlacing is gone, even though no deinterlacing was applied...
Thanks

• Printing Issue: Colors print fine from Photoshop but washed out in Illustrator

I am having trouble printing from Illustrator.  The same image...whether cut and pasted, opened in, or using the swatch created....prints differently in Photoshop and Illustrator.  I need to use this specific color (for branding purposes) and it prints fine in Photoshop but washed out and grey-ish in illustrator.
I've made sure the color settings are the same (in bridge) and made sure all the print settings are the same.  It is the same color on the screen, and in detail, but the print output is clearly different.  Any help please??

If I print from Acrobat, everything is washed out and greyed -  both the PDF from Illustrator and the PDF saved from Photoshop.
I tried letting the printer decide and I tried set to illustrator - both washed out and greyed.
Here are my settings in illustrator:

• Pic HERE: Losing color/washed out when exported

So I exported my movie using H.264 and the result is a washed out image.
The left image is the exported footage and the right is the footage viewed in FCP.
Is this a common problem or am I just doing something wrong here?

The only difference I could see was that the whites were (Slightly) brighter in the left.mov pic... Maybe a slight shift in "warmth" or saturation in the mids (I can see it in the mans face far right).
Hey, you are compressing and something has to give. Simply boost the controls in FCP that are important to you before compression based on the results you see. Keep in mind that every web viewer’s computer will display something different.
Props to you for being fussy!

• RGB color in inDesign changes (washed out) after exporting it to PDF

Hi,
I am new to InDesign and i have a hard time figuring out how could I export my InDesign file to PDF without affecting the color.
This is what I do.
1. I created a new document with Transparency Blend Space set to Document RGB
2. I created a box using the rectangle tool and filled it up with RGB color, R=126 G=12 B=110
3. The color in Indesign is just how i wanted it, however, the problem arises when i export the file now to PDF
4. Instead of the color i wanted, the color was changed to a lighter color, or washed out.
5. THis happens even in text have the same RGB setting.
How could I export it to PDF with the same color, without being washed out?
I really appreciate your help on this. Thanks.

That sounds like the Color Picker, which works a bit differently in ID than in Illustrator or Photoshop. If the cursor is not in one of the RGB fields when you say OK you won't get RGB color. You can see this by noting the text in the Add ... Swatch button. My guess is you added the color as the CMYK conversion which is a bit lighter.
You might want to use the panel menu in the Swatches panel instead, or the new swatch button at the bottom of the panel while holding down the Alt key to open the new swatch definition dialog. You want to create a Process color and change the type to RGB, then enter the values in the RGB fields. Or if what you want is really Pantone 249U you can define a Spot swatch and choose Pantone Solid Uncoated and then specify the 249. I'll warn you though, that CS6 uses Lab values for displaying spot colors and 249U is considerably lighter than either the RGB you specified or the 249C. In earlier versions the book value conversions were used. Even when using Lab display values through Ink Manager in CS5, the coated and uncoated swatches incorrectly look the same in ID, and in Illustrator CS5 you would need to turn on overprint preview to see a difference.
Here are a couple of screen captures from PDFs exported from ID CS5 and CS6 using High Quality Print. The colored boxes with the lables were pasted from Illustrator CS5 to be sure I was using the same color definitions and that theywere behaving as native objects. Below are the same boxes placed:
and here is how the screen looked in CS6 in ID (notice the difference in the placed .ai file -- the screen preview is NOT using the Lab values, although it exports with them):
I don't know what the content is and how you present it, but it doesn't sound like a web page. That said, if you choose Web for intent in Document Setup you can still use print size paper sizes for the document and change the rulers after the doc is created to read inches or millimeters or other units of your choice instead of pixels and the file will use default RGB swatches and default to RGB when making new colors.

• PDFs washed out when exported from Indesign

I have a grayscale picture on a B&W background. Looks great in Indesign, but when exported to PDF the blacks are washed out. I have tried it several times.
I am using Indesign CS, exporting to Acrobat 5, print, on compression I have chosen 'do not downsample' on all.
When exporting simply to screen, it looks fine and the blacks are rich. When exported with the press settings, the black becomes a dark gray.
Help? thx

There are a few things to consider about the way ID handles grayscale images.
ID does not have a grayscale color spacethere's only CMYK, RGB, or Lab. The display of Black (which is CMYK 0|0|0|100 because there is no grayscale space), varies depending on the document's CMYK profile. Modern profiles never display 0|0|0|100 as absolute black because that's not what happens on pressoffset blacks are not very black. Absolute black is reserved for rich black combinations, i.e. 65|50|50|100. If you change profiles from a coated to an uncoated profile you will see that uncoated profile previews Black as an even lighter value, which again is what will happen on a press printing on an uncoated sheet.
Things get more complicated when you place a grayscale image. ID displays it differently depending on whether you have Overprint/Separation previews turned on or off. With Separation preview on, the grayscale previews as if it's on the black plate of CMYK (dark gray). With Separation preview off the grayscale previews at 2.2 gamma and the 100% black is not limited.
When you export a press quality PDF with a grayscale and black objects you get a CMYK PDF with everything on the black plate, so Acrobat's display of the CMYK file is again dependent on the CMYK profile in Acrobat (black is gray)
Legacy CMYK profiles display 0|0|0|100 as absolute black, so try setting your Color Settings in both ID and Acrobat to Photoshop 5 Default Spaces, which will give you an absolute black preview in both programs.

• Interlacing artifacts on progressive footage in FCP but not when exported?

Hey everyone! Thanks so much to everyone here who has helped me before!
I am trying to edit a music video on my 2GHz Core2 Duo Macbook. I can do everything just fine, but with one little hitch.
The video I am editing was shot DVCPro 1080p 30.
When playing back the raw footage, or playing back my edits in FCP, the video has interlacing artifacts during periods of quick movement, even though the footage was shot progressive. However, when the video is exported, *there are no artifacts upon playback.*
Also, if I open the video in Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended, and look at the video one frame at a time, the interlacing artifacts are there!
Anyone have any idea about why this is happening?
Thanks so much!

• Import 16:9 footage to FCP but doesn't playback in 16:9

When I import 16:9 video to FCP, and play it back on the timeline, it does not show up as 16:9 instead it plays back in 4:3. Please help me with this?

Shouldn't be anything to do with the camera. When you say it's 4:3, do you mean that your 16:9 image is stretched vertically/squeezed horizontally? This means that your clip and seq are both set as non-anamorphic. If your footage is appearing as 16:9 in the viewer but as letterbox in the sequence then the clip is set as anamorphic but the sequence isn't. Some people may want this.
If you want to work proper 16:9 you should capture as anamorphic and work in an anamorphic sequence.

• Yellow Cast to HVX200 Footage in FCP - but fine on NTSC Monitor

Dear Folks:
I am shooting two cameras with an HVX200 and an HMC150 in a room where the only light source is daylight-bulbed Kinoflos. The lights are fixed, as it the set. Nothing changes. There are no windows.
I have two NTSC monitors, both set to camera bars.
I use manual white balance. I use a big white card (a foamcore board).
The first day, the image looked perfectly white balanced on the NTSC monitors. We ingested the footage through Final Cut Pro. It matched the look we saw on the NTSC monitors on several macs.
The second day, however, the image had a YELLOW cast to it when ingested via Log and Transfer.
Why would it look clean and white on the NTSC monitors and yellow on various macs?
Thanks!

First off, are you saying there is a difference between Day One and Day Two...? or...
Just a difference between NTSC and mac display?
Are there any common values in the days that can be sampled and compared numerically? For example some thing "white" in day one is R=235, G=235, B=235 and on day two is R=235, G=235, B=190?
Two other things off the top of my head might be the white balance went away overnight (if you didn't balance again on the second day), or one of your kinos went "sour".
Not likely but you may be getting a subtractive dynamic contrast in the shadows?
Or, more likely, there is a white point difference between the NTSC monitors and the macs. Generally speaking, most macs set for broadcast-emulation sit around D65, while many, many ntsc monitors can range from D65 all the way up to about 9500, which is VERY blue, but your eye-brain adapts to that and then it becomes a VERY bright "white".... against which everything else will look yellow.

• Grainy/washed out beta cam footage

Our company has been using Media 100 for a number of years now. We have been testing out Final Cut and Avid as upgrades. In putting together a project in Final Cut, I brought in both DVCam and BetaCam footage (I digitized the BetaCam through our Media 100 break out box and Firewire cable for DVCam). The DVCam footage looks great, but the BetaCam footage is grainy and washed out. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong to get this result and how to remedy it?
Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

No. The clips look fine after Media 100 export. The graininess comes after FCP import. What type of break out box do others use for FCP if they shoot on BetaCam? I was in hopes of getting more feedback; thanks for the reply.

• Washed Out Colors When Digitizing From Mini-DV camera

Instead of renting a deck, I figured I'd just use a mini-DV camera to digitize some footage. The reasoning I'm using, is that there is NO DIFFERENCE in quality between digitizing mini-DV footage from a professional deck vs just a mini-DV camera. Is that correct?
The problem is that the footage on the LCD screen on the camera looks great. Vivid colors, solid blacks, great contrast. However, when I digitize into FCP 7 (Snow Leopard) the footage becomes murky. Washed out colors, milky blacks and hence it looks a lot more low-res than what I'm seeing on the camera's LCD screen when it digitizes.
Now, my first thought is that the screen is just compensating with more saturation and contrast. However, I'm also worried that somehow the footage isn't being brought in properly. I'm using the standard NTSC DV Anamorphic preset and capturing that way. Is there some gamma setting along the way could have affected the footage.
As it looks great on the camera's LCD, I'm wondering if there isn't some capture setting somewhere. Otherwise, I'm going have to boost the saturation and contrast to try and make the FCP footage match what I'm seeing on the camera.

It's all there in my initial inquiry.
Kind of...(let's not forget that your profile still lists G4 / Mac OS 10.4.2)...these details are important.
We ask for specifics, because often users have inadvertently tweaked settings, or run Software Update or some other upgrade, that can affect the system as a whole, particularly FCP.
Things like... exactly which version of QT are you using? Snow Leopard loads QTX (QT10) by default, which can cause it's own issues. It is possible to load QT7 additionally, but it will go into your Utilities folder (you should be able to move it to Applications), but since I'm not versed in SL, I'll not speculate whether it's an issue for you or not.
That's one example. So, please give us exact versions/info on...
OS/FCP/QT
Capture and Sequence settings (just to make sure)
How is the camera connected?
How are you currently monitoring your captured media?

• What am I doing wrong here? Vids look correct in FCP but not in Quicktime..

Hi,
I have a few quicktime movies that I made a long time ago. I have dragged them to my hard drive and they look great and play exactly how I edited them in Final Cut Pro. However, when I open them in Quicktime or try to play them into any other format (Flash) they appear wider.
Now I am confused as it appears every movie I have ever saved seems to be distorted when I play it in Quicktime.
Are there some settings within FCP or Quicktime that I am not aware of?
Are both programs accurately playing what is recorded?

I am having this exact same issue. My sequence is 352x288 the video looks great in FCP but every time I Export this sequence straight out through QuickTime (not QT Conversion or Compressor) self-contained and using the current settings it plays back in QuickTime as 720x480 (640x480) millions in DV format. I even tried to force the export to a customized setting with the 352x288 frame size and it still plays back at 720x480 making the video look fuzzy and stretched. We've already spent a few hours testing other options with no success.
Oh and what's odd is if I open the same exported file in FCP's Viewer the size is correct and when I view the exported file's info (Apple+I) it says Dimensions: 352x288. Codec is DV/DVCPRO - NTSC. One thing I just thought of while typing this is would changing the codec make a difference since the original footage is 720p from an HVX200 camera? If I should change it what should I change it too?
The viewers will be watching this in QT Player. I'm using FCP7 and QT7 also tested with QTX with the same results.
Any idea is better than none, thanks!

• Quicktime movie washed out in Safari

I'm having a problem with my quicktime movie published in Safari. The movie looks good on Firefox but washed out on Safari. I cant seem to find a way to stop this from happening. I copied the movie from the Safari version on the web to see if it was Safari and played it out on the desktop and its washed out. The original was HD and very clean. I converted with H.264 in compressor and the final movie looked great. Sure would like it to look as good as the H.264 on my desktop. Any suggestions would be great.

No, this isn't a rookie thing. I believe the problem lies within the new quicktime update, the last one did the same thing. However, this is a frustrating problem, but my suggestion is to wait a few days, and see if apple picks up on the problem and releases a fix.
DON'T UNINSTALL QUICKTIME USING PACIFIST!!! I tried that and had to reinstall my operating system. I don't know why, but it is not advisable.

• Washed out colours

Can anyone please tell me why the colours on this image look completely washed out. Taken with Canon 30D set on sRGB, original RAW imported into LR with ProPhoto set as working space. Exported as jpeg and resized in Photoshop. Note: the colours were washed out upon Export and appeared so whether later Imported back into LR and viewed, or viewed with other applications. The yellow alone should be very vivid and bright as Rape seed is and not a dull green as shown here :-(
http://community.dcmag.co.uk/photos/alan_inghams_gallery/images/420895/original.aspx

First off - many thanks to all those who have taken the time to view this post and likewise have offered many many suggestions - I am indeed beholding to you all.
Jeff - my monitor was in fact calibrated only this morning in my efforts to eliminate every possible problem area.
Tonight I have done what many have done - I 'Exported' the RAW file using the Export function in LR. In fact I exported twice, once as a jpeg and once as a tiff. I then 'Imported' both back into LR and as others have observed, when compared to the original RAW file the tiff and jpeg look almost identical. Exercise also repeated in CS2 with same results.
However, has anyone tried viewing the tiff/jpeg image OUTSIDE of LR e.g. I have viewed them using Windows Explorer, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and Fastone Max Viewer. It is when viewed in these applications that the images (jpeg and tiff) looked flat and washed out.
So my concern is plainly obvious. I know that I can upon Import always see favourable results of all the images (RAW, TIFF and JPEG) within LR itself. But I do not want always to view them in LR - I also want to sent the resultant TIFFs and JPEGs to a web situated printing company. I am concerned that the prints will be returned flat and lifeless as they appear in other applications. This is something I won't know of course until I actually send a print away for printing.
Could those kind people who have taken the trouble thus far and 'Re-Imported the tiff/jpeg back into LR please have a look at it OUTSIDE of LR e.g. using Windows Explorer if approriate and tell me do they still see the same results as when the images are in LR or CR3. I might be labouring this point, but it is not enough that they all appear colourful and pretty etc whilst in LR or CS3 - they actually have to leave the applications at some time or other. The only good news in this story so far is that when I printed out the original RAW image from within LR the print did in fact turn out OK :-)

• FCP Filter control brightness? - washed out - too bright?

We filmed a high school jazz choir presentation, 4 -HD canon HFS 20 cameras. We had the white balance set to incandescent. The video was edited using multiclip. It all looks very good, on all the close up cameras. The wider shots look a little washed out or too bright. The lighting on the stage was pretty bright, so if a student had a white shirt on and the lights were directed at his/her head, it kind of blended together slightly. In general it looks pretty good, but I was wondering if there was a way to cut that (overexposure?) down using FCP, or is there something I need to do when we film.

Hello Jeff,
generally you should avoid overexposing your footage. Most cameras have a "Zebra" that will indicate areas over 100 IRE. Blown out video may not be fixable in post because the information in the overexposed areas may be lost. You can try the following:
• 3-way color corrector; easiest approach but not very powerful
• take the footage into Color for grading; this is much more sophisticated as you can work on selected areas.
• if you don't want go through Color you could give this tool a shot: http://www.pistolerapost.com/pluginz/captains.zip
hope this helps

• Why is Color Washed Out after making DVD from FCP

I took a 3 minute corporate video from FCP (shot SD, NTSC DV) and compressed from the timeline in Compressor (3.01) to DVD best 90 minutes. When I burned the DVD in DVDSP (4.2) and played it in a stand alone DVD player with a JVC production monitor it looked washed out. It looks nothing like it does in FCP or DVDSP.
Any idea what is going on?

Yes to the monitor. I shot the video with a Panasonic HVX200 to P2 cards, downloaded and color corrected on Color. Viewed on two production monitors: A JVC CRT and a new Panasonic 26" LCD (LH2600W) production monitor which is fed from a Kona Card via SDI. My Apple 30" monitor, which I edit on is color calibrated with a Spyder calibrator.
I have played the DVD on the 30" and it looks washed out, even after comparing it to a QT movie from the timeline and played on the 30". Something seems to be happening when the DVD is burnt. The mpeg2 file when played in the inspector in Compression looks good too.
This is weird, since I have never had this problem before, but this is the first use of the new Compression.
