Nikon D40x Lightroom Problem

I am running Windows Vista and CS3 and am trying to process Nikon D40x raw files (NEFs) using ACR 4.1. The images come up properly in Bridge. However, when I try to add metadata using a metadata template, I get the error: "There was an error writing metadata to DSC_130.NEF." When I try to rotate an image in Bridge, I get the same error. If I try to do a Batch Rename, the name does not change. If I double-click on the image, it opens properly in ACR and the image can be rotated in ACR, and it then appears rotated in Bridge.
I also tried importing the D40x images in Lightroom. The following error appeared: "Problem Importing Files. The following files were not imported. The files appear to be unsupported or damaged."

I think from my reading at Adobe that there is to be an update to LR very soon, (not V1.1!) that will update the ACR engine in LR to handle the D40X.

c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats
I'm beginning to think this is a Windows Vista issue. I just installed ACR 4.1 on my XP laptop and it works fine. For both the Vista machine and the laptop, my raw files are on an external drive. If I move the raw files on the Vista machine from the external drive to the c: drive, there is no problem. I'm exploring whether there is some permissions issue in Vista that is not allowing me to write to the raw files if they are on an external drive. Ain't new operating systems just great fun!

I've been using Elements 10 on my windows 7 machine editing RAW/NEF picture files taken with a Nikon D40X camera with no problems. I upgraded my camera to a Nikon DX7100 and can no longer load my RAW/NEF into elements 10. Is there a compatability problem

Any updates available for the Nikon D40x ?

It has only been supported since Camera RAW 4.1, so will probably come in the 1.1 update.
You can check the list of ACR and Lightroom supported cameras at:

You can use the Adobe DNG Converter to convert your D40x files to DNG and they will be readable by Lightroom 1.0 and earlier versions of ACR.

Nikon D40x

Hi,
I have bought a new Nikon D40x DSLR. The camera model is new released on march 2007.
The camera is very fine and cheap.
My problem: I can't open the NEF/RAW files that have been created with the camera in any software. Wether PS CS2, Bridge CS2, Lightroom, Aperture, iPhoto. I always get the message: "unsupported file format".
Is the camera too new that the softwares can read the files? Do I make any mistake?

You can use the Picture Project software that was included with the camera. It is a very basic RAW/NEF program. The best NEF program for Nikon is the Nikon Capture NX. You should have the trial program for NX on the disk that came with your computer. I use Nikon Capture NX, Nikon Capture 4, PS Elements 4. Updates to camera's NEF files for programs lag cameras by months.
There has been updates to Photoshop. There may be one for the D40x. I don't know about the other programs.
You can get more information on your question in the D40/50/70/80 forum at www.dpreview. There is also a Mac forum at that site that you can ask questions.
No, you did not make a mistake buying the D40x. I have the D80 & D70, and I have a great time with the Nikon cameras.

Does anyone know how the Nikon D40x (10.2 Megapixels) is? I really want a camera that's good outdoors at night, and my camera has been a disappointment.

The Nikon D40X DSLR camera is a good camera, and you should be able to take pretty good photographs outdoors at night. Keep in mind that nighttime photography is one of the most challenging types of photography there is. The reason for this is that cameras rely on light to be able to capture images, and the less light there is the more difficult it will be to capture a successful image. If you want to take nighttime photographs using the available natural light, you are going to need a tripod almost all of the time. The use of a tripod will allow you to use much slower shutter speeds without getting blurred images. At slow shutter speeds just the act of pressing the shutter button can shake the camera enough to blur your images, and because of this it would also be a good idea to get a remote release for your camera.
Another problem that shows up in long-time exposures on digital cameras is digital noise, and I will say that higher end DSLR cameras will give you much better results than the Nikon D40X. The Nikon D40X is the entry level Nikon DSLR, and if you can afford a more advanced DSLR I would say buy it. You are on the right track when considering to purchase a DSLR camera for nighttime photography, because Point and Shoot cameras are just not made to take quality nighttime photographs. I hope this helps out!

Raw support for Nikon D40X

I just purchased a Nikon D40X. I realize that this is a very new camera that is not yet supported but I was wondering when ImageIO.framework was going to be updated to support this camera.
I plan on purchasing Aperture at some point but will not do so until the necessary OS support is in place.
Any ideas?
PS: I tried a modified version of a shell script I found on the Aperture forum but it destroyed all the files I tried it on The script replaced D40 with D70. I modified it to change D40X to D80 (the closest currently supported camera). No luck.

You can convert those RAW files to DNG like many professional photographers do and use those with iPhoto. I believe iPhoto will recognize DNG.

Nikon D40X incompatibility in raw files?

I was planning on buying the Nikon D40X DSLR until I noticed that it is incompatible in the raw format with iphoto and aperture. I am a retired amateur photographer. Since I have never before worked with raw files is it worth abandoning this purchase in favour of another model that will work with raw files. I have some difficulty holding heavy cameras which is why I finally decided on this model. Any suggestions? I also have Photoshop Elements 4 with a plug in 3.3 for raw conversion. I was planning on making this purchase in the coming week. Thank you.

You should definitely update that plug-in to 3.7. You can get it here.
Note that the most recent version of the ACR plug-in is 4.0, but that requires a patch to Elements 4.0 which has not been released yet (supposed to be out by May 20).

Lightroom problems with large folders of Raw images

I have a problem processing folders with a large number of Raw images in Lightroom and the same folder is easily processed in Adobe Bridge (without much loading time). The folder locked up Lightroom more than once. The folder has Nikon D2X and D2H .NIF files and it has 850 images. I bought Lightroom to simplify the editing and sorting and sorting process but I often work out of large folders like this. Is Bridge a better answer for what I am looking for or am I doing something wrong (like not waiting long enough).

It can take some ime for LR to import a large folder of RAWs. But once in it should be faster.
How are you importing. Are they already on your HD, or coming from the camera with copy, or a cardreader?

CC Photoshop/Lightroom PROBLEMS

I purchased CC Photoshop/Lightroom a little over a month ago , since then I have had photoshop crash on launch over and over asking me for a serial number so I looked around saw on adobe's site to change from english (America ) to English ( international) , I did that and it fixed that problem but then I could not update any of my apps they would just crash and give me errors , so I contacted adobe they remotely accessed my computer and fixed it , or so I thought . Yesterday I gets notice saying that Lightroom has an update so I updated it and it did a weird install placing everything to my desktop which is not the default location and then I tried to open Lightroom and it did nothing at all , absolutely would not open , so I restarted over and over still nothing then CC tells me I have updates for Photoshop and bridge which of course they would not update and continued to crash giving me errors , finally after a whole day and night of searching for solutions and trying to get everything to work I turned my computer off . came back this morning and tried installing photoshop and bridge updates once again this time they went through and worked and both of them run for some odd reason , so then I attempted to try my luck on Lightroom and it now it decides to open, but when I try to access the develop module it tells me my trial version is up so develop module has been suspended and to upgrade my software which I do not understand why It would say that if I purchased the CC and I'm paying 10$ a month for both Photoshop and Lightroom .
Has anyone else experienced any of these issues , and know an actually solution to them? I am honestly getting sick of Photoshop and Lightroom not allowing updates to go through , crashing, not wanting to open , asking me for serial numbers and prompting me with other messages that make it to where I can't use the software.

I uninstalled Lightroom and C.C. , but Photoshop and Bridge won't uninstall I kep getting an error message saying that they can't be uninstalled to 1. restart computer , which I did , 2. Disable all startup programs including virus protection software, did that and 3. Attempt uninstall again , did that and still receive the error message so I downloaded adobe creative cloud cleanet tool, ran that selected #3 from the cleanup list to remove all creative cloud and creative cloud progrograms , finished the cleanup restarted computer Photoshop and Bridge are still their and still can't be removed and continue to receive initial error message of being unable to uninstall , tried looking around for a solution to this problem but am unable to find anything. I need some serious help I just want to uninstall Photoshop and Bridge so I can completely start from scratch downloading C.C. and the Photoshop, Lightroom & Bridge apps

Error trying to import raw files from NIKON to Lightroom

I am an amateur photographer. I just purchased a brand new NIKON D3300 took a few pictures, signed up for the Adobe annual Photographers Creative Cloud annual program and my first task to have Lightroom import a few test photos fails and I have no clue why my raw + jpgs can't be imported. at the outset In Lightroom I also got a "Preview unavailable for this file" message for every image file when I pointed to the memory card I had connected to my computer:

NIKON D3300
The Nikon D3300 Raw format is not yet supported in Lightroom 5 (currently 5.3).

Raw file formats are proprietary to each camera manufacturer and specific to each camera model. Adobe's Camera Raw engine (used by both Adobe Camera Raw - as a plugin to Photoshop - and Lightroom) must be constantly updated with every new camera make and model which arrives on the market in order to read and edit Raw files from that camera.
Adobe has added support for the D3300 to Camera Raw 8.4 which is about to be released. It is a Release Candidate (RC status) at the moment. So D3300 Raw support will probably be added to the next soon-to-be-released Lightroom update (5.4).

In the meantime, you can download the free Adobe DNG Converter 8.4

Using the DNG converter, you can then convert the D3300 Raw files to DNGs then open and edit the DNGs in Lightroom 5.3.
Once Lightroom 5.4 is released (assuming it also has D3300 support) the DNG conversion will no longer be required.

Exporting files from lightroom: problem with filename

I am a sports-photographer and i use lightroom since version 1.0. i really like it to edit my pictures and it is very easy to use for importing my files and setting the meta-datas.
but i have one problem, that forces me to open up each file i export once again to rename it, what costs a lot of time:
when i export my files, i can choose a preset to give it a name, which works well. but i would need it like this: "my preferences"001 (f.e. oliver-climbing-01oct09001) and raising in numbers.
lightroom ALWAYS makes a "-" between my presets and the numbers.
does anyone know if there is a possibilty to export the file and give it a name without this "-" in fornt of the number?

u are right, but this is not my problem:
i want lightroom to count my exported pictures starting with 001, then 002, then 003 at the end and so on
but if i use the sequency-number or anything else, it does not generate a new name like 001, then 002,
but it does make 001 and then 001-2 and 001-2...

Raw update on Lightroom - problem with photos during import

I recently did an update provided by Adobe to help improve the "raw converter /import" or something like that, and now when I upload my photos - they change and become dark, the histogram looks awful... how do i go back to the way it was before.. i shot Nikon D7000, and my version of lightroom now is 3.6, with Camera raw 6.6. PLEASE HELP.. do i need to uninstall - then reinstall?

Too bad you can't provide us with details, because as far as I know there is NO such thing using Lightroom. If you have Lightroom 3.6, there is no upgrade you can do except purchase Lightroom 4.
Nevertheless, it sounds like perhaps you are accidentally applying a preset on import, check the history of one such file by looking in the History Panel of the Develop Module and seeing if the bottom element indicates a preset was applied.
