NIO: Strange problem when using ByteBuffer with non-blocking SocketChannel

Hi,
I have a server that uses multiplexed, non-blocking I/O with java.nio. When a client connects, the server waits for the message: <system cmd="knock"/>, returns a message and disconnects the client. The clients are shortly serviced in less than a second.
But the server newer receive anything from about 20% of the clients - even though it is sent. Or with other words: it is received and the data is contained in the ByteBuffer - SocketChannel.read(ByteBuffer) - but a call to ByteBuffer.remaing() returns 0 !!
ByteBuffer receiveBuf = ByteBuffer.allocate(65536);
receiveBuf.clear(); // the code is elsewhere used for longer living clients
int readBytes = channel.read(receiveBuf);
receiveBuf.flip();
StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
System.out.println(" * Remaining: "+receiveBuf.remaining()); // writes: ' * Remaining: 0'
System.out.println(" * Received: "+new String(receiveBuf.array())); // writes: ' * Received: <system cmd="knock"/>'
while(receiveBuf.remaining() >= 2) {
  byte b = receiveBuf.get();
  sb.append((char)b);
System.out.println(" * sb content: "+sb.toString()); // writes: ' * sb content: 'The ByteBuffer clearly receives the correct data, but the ByteBuffer.remaining() returns 0 and therefore the StringBuffer will never have any content.
The problem seems to occur randomly and for about 20% of the clients (simulated from the same computer and therefore has the same bandwidth and so on).
Anyone knows what is going on, and how to solve the problem !?

It's always possible in any read that the number of bytes read is less than the number of bytes requested. You need to keep reading until you have got everything you expected, and cope with every possible error condition on each iteration.

  • NIO - Selector problem - when using more than one in same application

    Hi,
    I'm developing a multiplayer-server, which shall be able to handle at least 2000 concurrent clients. To avoid the use of 4000 threads for 2000 clients (a thread for each stream), I would like to use NIO.
    Problem:
    The server has of course a ServerSocketChannel registered with a Selector, and when clients connects, the SocketChannel's is received. IF these channels is registered (OP_READ) with the same Selector-instance as the ServerSocketChannel, there is no problem and the Selector recognizes when a registered SocketChannel is ready for OP_READ - BUT when the received SocketChannels is registered with another Selector-instance than the one the ServerSocketChannel is registered with, the Selector NEVER recognizes, when a SocketChannel is ready for OP_READ - why not and how do I solve the problem? Only one thread can service the same Selector-instance, and when both receiving many connections and read/write, this could easily be a bottleneck
    Following is the used code; 2 classes: ClientListener (has a ServerSocketChannel registered with a Selector) and ClientHandler (has another Selector where the SocketChannels is registered and a thread-pool that services all the SocketChannels, when they are ready for read/write):
    public class ClientListener {
      private static final int BACKLOG = 32;

    Ok, found the solution here: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=31&thread=282069
    "The select() method holds a lock on the selector that
    the register() method wants to acquire. The register()
    method cannot continue until the lock is relased and
    the select() method will not release it until some key
    is triggered. If this is the first key you're adding
    then select has nothing that will wake it up, ever.
    The result is, obviously, a deadlock.
    The solution is to have a queue of pending connections.
    You put your new connection in that queue. Then you
    wake up the selector and let that thread go through
    the queue, registering connections."

  • Navigation problem when using tiles with JSF

    Hi all,
    I m using tiles with JSF. i have included all the libraries and jsp page is rendered properly. but when i use <h:commandLink> in the body part of the JSP , i cannot go to the specified link. when we use tiles, what changes need to be done in faces-config file?? i mean what navigation rule we need to specify ??

    Hello, I have the same problem; JSF+Tiles = No navigation.
    One basic question is should I reference the parent jsp or the included body jsp in the faces-config.xml file.
    For example: The login.jsp is a main tiles page that includes a menu.jsp, header.jsp & a loginBody.jsp.
    Hence the faces-config could have this rule;
    <navigation-rule>
    <from-view-id>/login.jsp</from-view-id>
    <navigation-case>
    <to-view-id>/catalog.jsp</to-view-id>
    </navigation-case>
    </navigation-rule>
    (I've left the outcome tag out to simplify this post)
    Or, I could refer loginBody.jsp in the navigation rule;
    <navigation-rule>
    <from-view-id>/loginBody.jsp</from-view-id>
    <navigation-case>
    <to-view-id>/catalog.jsp</to-view-id>
    </navigation-case>
    </navigation-rule>
    The loginBody.jsp has a commandbutton which a user clicks which starts the navigation.
    Neither seems to work unfortunately & I'm a stuck.
    Thanks

  • Using OCIBindDynamic with non-blocking connections

    I need to use an OCI array interface for execute statements more than once per one request to server.
    When I have called stored procedure or function in the non-blocking connection context using OCIBindDynamic for parameter binding, application have been crashed at random time.
    I don't have any problems using default (blocking) mode.
    Environment:
    Oracle 8.1.7 release 3 for Windows
    MS Visual C++ 6.0 compiler

  • Strange problem when using custom authentication schema

    Hello,
    I'm building a custom authentication system for the application. Basically, I followed the blog post from Martin: http://www.talkapex.com/2009/03/custom-authentication-status.html
    However, the authentication seems working fine at the beginning when running the page 101 from Application Builder and log in, but when I log out from the application (redirect back to page 101) and try to log in with the same credentials, it gives error message "Invalid Login Credentials ". Also, when the application is accessed from public (open page 101 directly using another computer), the authentication doesn't work at all.
    Furthermore, I checked the table apex_workspace_access_log and found out that it has "AUTH_SUCCESS" even if using the fake credentials and the login failed (I use "apex_util.set_authentication_result (p_code => 3);" when auth function return false).
    I couldn't find the cause of the problem, then I created the same custom authentication in apex.oracle.com. The problem doesn't appear anymore. To make sure they are same, I have double checked the custom authentication in both the development environment and the apex.oracle.com.
    This is very strange to me and I don't know where to looking for the problem. Could you give me some advice of what may cause this problem. Thanks in advance!

    I found the problem myself. The cause is the VPD, the account table has VPD policy applied, which prevented public access.

    What can be a problem?

    Huh..
    after two days...
    The problem is in wrapper Class for T_PREDLOGA...
    There was not specified the schema where the "T_PREDLOGA" was created.. The strange thing is that i have a public synonym for T_PREDLOGA for all users.. (not just for INIS_PROD).
    Here is the solution (adding schema name)
    __sJT_st.registerOutParameter(2, 2003, "INIS_PROD.T_PREDLOGA");
    instead of
    __sJT_st.registerOutParameter(2, 2003, "T_PREDLOGA");

  • A strange problem when using GlobalApp

    After installing workshop on a new computer, I cannot run my application locally anymore. I use a variable in GlobalApp to store a value from my parent flow before I start a nested flow. Like this:
    globalApp.userCredentials = userCred;
    globalApp.userFullName = userCred.getUserFullName();
    In the nested flow I retrieve the value:
    userRealmValues = globalApp.userCredentials.getUserRealms().split(";");
    Now, this worked fine on the old computer, but on the new I can observe that the instance of the object globalApp CHANGES when moving from the parentflow to the nested flow!!!
    This, of course gives a Null pointer exception.
    Also, building an .EAR and deploying it on my test server works fine, so it is only the localhost server that is the problem.
    I use workshop 8.1 sp4.
    Any ideas anyone?
    kind regards
    Søren Werner

    Hi
    You are correct. This appears to be a bug on 8.1sp5. It works fine if you use a ear but a exploded app fails.
    Also this appears to be a regression as on sp4 this works fine. I will provide more info after a bug report is raised so you can follow up with BEA support via a support case.
    Thanks

  • Problem when using swings with thread

    Hi,
    I am trying to read a database randomly and printing it in a jframe(using jtable and jscrollpane). I am continously checking the values in the database using a infinite do .. while .. loop. and printing the values in the JFrame. I am also making the main thread sleep for every 5 seconds. but when the thread resumes from sleep the JFrame gets the focus. This disturbs me a lot, because of this i am not able to use any other programs like (outlook or word). Kindly provide me a way to continously check the database and print values in the JFrame in the background without JFrame gaining the focus until i click on it.
    Regards
    Kishdude

    It's not clear where you actually tell the JFrame to display itself (usually setVisible(true).
    But this is a bit confused.
    If the first loop is, in fact, infinite then the table will never be created, since the rest of the code won't be reached.
    Don't create a new JTable each time you update the data. Update the existing one. You should define a method, somewhere, to load the table data from the database, call it once while building the window to load the initial values and then - once the window is displayed, set a loop or a Timer going to rescan the data periodically using the same code.
    There are serveral ways you can manage the table data. The key is the TableModel associated with the table. You can change the content of the TableModel or create a new one each time you read the data and use JTable's setModel method to replace it. Personally I'd write a subclass of AbstractTableModel or perhaps DefaultTableModel and put the code to scan the database, plus the data read, in there.
    There's not a lot of point in making the main thread wait once you've openned a window. The program won't exit while it has a window open. You can call setDefaultCloseAction() on the window and tell it to close the program when the close button is clicked. Or you can add a WindowAdapter to the window and deal with the close attempt yourself.
    And don't throw away exceptions in cache clause like you are, because you're never going to debug successfully if you do that. At the very least call printStackTrace() on the exception.
    So your sequence should be (roughly)
    Load the first batch of data into a TableModel.
    Build the window, using the TableModel to create your table.
    display the window.
    Start a background Thread which repeatedly waits a few seconds, then rereads the data into the table model, ensuring it calls the fireTableModelChanged() method of the model that requests that the table be redrawn.

  • Strange problem when syncing events with Google Ca...

    I'm trying to sync all my calendar events with Google Calendar. Everything works perfectly if I add or update events with my N9. All the changes and new events are synced to Google Calendar so that they are visible in web browser.
    But if I make changes or create new events with my computer (with web browser) those events are not visible in N9!!! When I tap "Syncronize" N9 show's how many events were added or updated, but they are not visible in the calendar.
    Everything worked before, but now the last visible event in the calendar (made with computer) is on October 25.
    I've tried set this account up with Mail for Exchange and CalDAV. Same problem with both of them...
    Any ideas why one account works, but another does not with same kind of settings!?
    EDIT:
    I just found this:

  • A strange problem when using GMail

    Hi
    I have a MacBook Pro and when I get connected to internet any website works fine except GMail and Orkut which is hosted by google as well. The problem is when I log in to my gmail account my inbox will be displayed but in a couple of second a transparent black page will be shown and no key will work, the message on this page says that I need to restart the computer, and asks me to hold down the on/off button. This happens for orkut.com as the same.
    At first I thought it is a browser issue but even with Safari I have the same problem. Can anybody help me out of this?

  • MacBook Pro (r) noise problem when using headphones with 90%+ charge?

    I've tried using other headphones on the MacBook and they work just fine; but I've also used the Denons on other devices and they too work perfectly fine. The problem is that the headphones output has too much bass, if that makes sense. It's the same as when you play a very very loud noise on a tiny speaker. I've tried playing on the settings but nothing works! I bought the laptop 2 weeks ago and the problem persisted even then but I didn't think of it as a big problem until now. I'm 100% sure the problem only exists when the charge is 90% or higher because I saw the charge drop to 89% and *poof*! it goes back to normal! This is really very annoying!

    You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
    Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • Problem when using JDBC with JSP

    Hi,
    I am trying to display results after a database query on a JSP page, and then provide the options delete or update one of these records or to add a new one.
    What I did was to pass the ResultSet object to the webpage, and then display the result. When the buttons are pressed, I pass this ResultSet to another jsp page where I provide the required functionality. This is then forwarded back to the previous JSP, where the new data is displayed.
    However, when the first page is re-displayed, it creates a new connection and i was wondering if there is a way to close the previous connection through the ResultSet?
    Also, I wanted to put the ResultSet in a bean, but I think it is causing an error in the web server, saying something like it is not Serializable. Is there any other way to pass the ResultSet around?
    Any suggestions on better ways to manage databases though web interfaces would be welcome, or if someone could point me to a good tutorial on this topic!
    cheers
    Ankur

    Bad idea to be passing ResultSets around. Those are database cursors, a scarce resource.
    You should load that data into a data structure, close the ResultSet immediately, and then pass the data structure around in session if you must.
    Better yet, have a central servlet that deals with all database calls. Let the JSPs just do display, as they were meant to. - MOD

  • Strange problems on using selectmany_checkboxlist with selectitems

    Hello all.
    I try to get selectmany_checkboxlist (JSF 1.0 Beta) working with selectitems but it seems
    that there are several conversions problems. My JSP page is defined as follows:
    <h:form id="registrationForm">
      <h:selectmany_checkboxlist id="credentials"  value="#{UserAccount.credentials}" required="true">
         <f:selectitems value="#{UserAccount.credentialItems}"/>
      </h:selectmany_checkboxlist>
      <h:messages styleClass="message-validation" for="credentials"/>
      <h:command_button id="submit" action="success" value="Submit">
    <h:form id="registrationForm">Minimum one checkbox has to be selected. The messages tag shows
    - if nothing is selected : Validation-Error: No Values (This is OK)
    - if one is selected : Conversion Error : Value 'null' for Modell 'expression'.
    - after submit : Conversion-Error: Value'[Ljava.lang.String;@ed3e63' forModell 'expression'
    My Managed-Bean is as follows:
    [code]
    public class UserAccountBean {
    private ArrayList m_CredentialList = null;
    public void setCredentialItems(Collection items) {
    System.out.println("setCredentialItems " + items);
    // Not needed
    public Collection getCredentialItems() {
    String[] options = {"ERPLOGIN", "CRLUPLOAD", "ADMIN"};
    ArrayList items = new ArrayList(options.length);
    for (int i = 0; i < options.length; i++) {
    items.add(new SelectItem(options, options[i], options[i]));
    System.out.println("getCredentialItems " + items);
    return items;
    public void setCredentials(Object[] credentials) {
    if ((credentials != null) && (credentials.length > 0)) {
    int len = credentials.length;
    m_CredentialList.clear();
    m_CredentialList = new ArrayList(len);
    for (int i = 0; i < len; i++) {
    m_CredentialList.add(credentials[i]);
    System.out.println("setCredentials " + m_CredentialList);
    } else {
    System.out.println("setCredentials " + null);
    public Object[] getCredentials() {
    System.out.println("getCredentials " + m_CredentialList);
    try {
    return m_CredentialList.toArray();
    } catch (NullPointerException e) {return null; }
    My faces-config.xml:
    <managed-bean>
      <description>Data model containing data of a user account</description>
        <managed-bean-name>UserAccount</managed-bean-name>
        <managed-bean-class>model.UserAccountBean</managed-bean-class>
        <managed-bean-scope>session</managed-bean-scope>
    </managed-bean>What is wrong about this? Any idees?
    Heinz

    I believe the problem is a bug in the beta RI that chokes on "Object[]" as the type of the selectmany's value, and that "String[]" will work. I also believe this has been fixed since the beta.

  • Strange problem about using JSTL

    Dear all,
    I've got a strange proble when using JSTL with tomcat.
    I've got two strings as the following:
         String id_string = (String)session.getAttribute("user_id");
         System.out.println(id_string);
         String valid_user = (String)session.getAttribute("valid_user");
    The "println" call tells me that "id_string" has a valid value.
    But when I use it like this in the same page:
    <a href="springapp/blog.htm?id=<c:out value=${ id_string " /><c:out value="${ valid_user }" />" >test
    I can only get "valid_user"'s value.
    "id_string" is not print out to the page.
    Would anyone please help me out?
    Any help would appreciated and thanks in advance.

    "id_string" is not print out to the page.Your session attribute is called "user_id" which you're fetching correctly earlier. But in the <c:out> tag, you're trying to read "id_string" which is the name of your local variable and not in any scope. "valid_user" works because you've named your local variable the same as your scope attribute, so the value being printed out is from the scope and not your local variable. As far as I know, JSTL doesn't work with local scriptlet variables, it only access variables in the four scopes: page, request, session and application
    You should use the <c:set> tag to set a variable value. Try not to mix scriptlets and tags, it's frowned upon and will probably cause you problems later.
