No dock after install

I have an iMac from Sept 2006 with Tiger. I tried to upgrade to Leopard yesterday and everything went well and I got the "install successful" screen after which the computer restarted.
Once it had restarted, the dock, the top bar and my desktop appeared. But within seconds of appearing, they disappeared leaving only my desktop image on the screen (no blue screen). There is nothing that I have been able to do to bring them back. I have restarted several times. The same thing happens everytime. The computer is on, I can even put it to sleep, but no access to anything.
I would like to know if there is any way that I can revert back to my previous Tiger install to start with. Secondly, is there a 'Safe mode' startup in iMacs that I could use? Thirdly, is there a key combination that would show me what is going on when I see nothing on the screen (like ctrlaltdel in windows)?
All help is greatly appreciated!

Take a look at this discussion. It's the same problem and he launched in safe mode http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5846843#5846843
Using the other login I had on my computer, I removed the programs that I had on my user account that the other user didn't. I narrowed it done to 2 programs. It was either "Dates to Ical" or "HP Image Zone".
I had been removing programs without any luck until I removed "Dates to Ical" and then when I rebooted I realized that the icon that used to be HP Image Zone had a question mark when I logged into the problem user. I quickly moved the ? to the trash. Every since then I've been able to log into the problem user and see my dock and everything else. I suspect it was the HP Image Zone since the removal didn't seem to clean.

iWeb doesn't sit in the dock after installing Mountain Lion? Why is that?

Assuming you updated the OS on a Mac that has iWeb installed you will find iWeb in the applications folder. See this page for how to open your website when using Mountain Lion...

  • Apple Mail Not Showing Inbox Unread Count on Dock after installing Mavericks

After installing Mavericks, my Apple Mail (connected to my work's Gmail account) stopped showing the Inbox's unread count on the dock. I switched it to "all mailboxes" to see if that would make a difference, and the dock shows 7 unread emails when there are actually none. When I switch it back to "Inbox" unread counts, it shows nothing. I've waited 15 minutes after receiving an email to see if it will show an unread message in the dock, but it does not. Does anyone have a fix for this?
    Thank you!

Quit your mail entirely, then in terminal do:
    mv ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope* ~/Desktop
This moves all your "Envelope Index*" files to your desktop.  An alternative is deleting the files, but this allows you to keep them as a temporary back-up (you can delete them at-will later).  Also, you can move the files from Finder instead of Terminal, if you prefer.
After the files have been moved, re-open Mail
This should re-load all your email messages, updating/restoring the count
While this works, it does not explain the reason the count goes missing, nor does it ensure that the count won't go missing again in the future, but at least it's a temporary workaround.

  • Can't find Dock after installing 10.6.7 update

THis happen to anyone else? What do do? Worked fine before. I restarted and that did not bring Dock back....
Two days ago I started working with Spaces on f8 key but that did not seem to stop access to Dock; problem only started when I installed the latest 10.6.7 update this morning.
    Model Identifier:          Macmini3,1

Make sure that the dock isn't hidden by presscing command-option-d
Also make sure that it isn't off to one of the sides.
If that doesn't help open terminal and type "killall Dock" with out the quotes.
See if that helps but if it doesn't,  With the finder window open go to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and trash that file and the com.apple.dock.db file

  • Windows 7 BSOD randomly occuring after installing iTunes 10.6 with iPhone 4 in dock

After installing iTunes 10.6 and IOS 5.1 on my iPhone 4, Windows 7 computer was randomly blue screening with the iPhone 4 in the attached dock. After removing the phone from the dock, system works fine.

Re-installed iTunes as you suggested and it worked.  However, started experiencing random BSOD's.  Disk check found a number of file errors on the boot drive - which it fixed.  It then took a number of re-boots before computer became stable.
Then, upgraded iTunes on a HP workstation (no iPhone attached).  On reboot windows had to attempt a boot repair 3 times before it would reboot.  Couldn't even do a disk check without first reverting to the last restore point.  It also corrupted Norton.  The end result was 2.5 hours of wasted time.
Being an expert pc user, I can safely say that I believe Apple has some serious issues with 10.6.

    jcaz,
Find the com.apple.finder.plist, and the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file in your ~Library/Preferences Folder. Drag these plist files to your Desktop, log out/in or restart.
If unsuccessful, can you duplicate this behavior if you create a new user?
Reinstalling the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo for PPC is an option if the behavior is observed in the new user account.

  • Dock not working after installing maverick

After installing Maverick on my Macbook Pro, my dock which is positioned at the bottom now freezes. Prior to update, just placing my cursor at bottom of screen would bring up the dock. Now, it either doesn't come up or I have to place my cursor down there several times before it finally pops up. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Revealing the Dock while in a full-screen app requires not only moving the cursor to the bottom of the screen, but keeping your finger on it or moving the cursor along the bottom edge (or other "tricks") to reveal the Dock.
    SUPER ANNOYING TO ME
Many users may like that way of operation, perhaps a great majority. But hundreds of thousands may find it annoying to have this cognitive pause imposed and would rather have the dock appear accidently once in a while when moving the cursor close to the bottom area of the display.
    This worked before Mavericks:
Setting the Dock autohide delay to zero (in Terminal, with write defaults...) removed this annoyance. As soon as your cursor's at the bottom of the screen, the Dock's there.
In Mavericks: Nothing to do! (so far)
APPLE: "You" make WRONG design decisions, "you" make professional users spend dozens of hours investigating how to tweak basic features behind the scenes. And THEN, "you" quietly invalidate those changes. Please, the best design decision that "you" could make is to give the user more choice. Please, give us a section in Preferences where these things may be changed. The religious dumbing down of the interface in favour of supposedly clean esthetics is plain WRONG.
It is also quite unacceptable that APPLE does read these pages but never responds.

  • Internet not working after installing "StarTech Thunderbolt Docking Station" driver

My Internet is not working after installing "StarTech Thunderbolt Docking Station" driver although "Ethernet" and "wireless" say they're connected, still there is no internet.
I have bought a "StarTech Thunderbolt Docking Station" as I need to use 2 thunderbolt based pieces of equipment on my "MacBook Pro"; which are a 2nd monitor as well as a Thunderbolt driven Audio Interface.
When I first plugged all my equipment to the "StarTech Thunderbolt Docking Station" everything was working fine, all pieces of equipment worked as well as Ethernet from both the computer and the docking station were working perfectly.
However, when I inserted the "StarTech Thunderbolt Docking Station driver CD" and installed the drivers, the internet on my computer has stopped working. Although the Ethernet says it is "connected" (same goes for "Thunderbolt Ethernet" when cable is connected to it) still the internet does not work. Even my wireless internet is not working anymore. Furthermore, also after installing the Docking Station drivers, my iTunes is crashing whenever started.
Please help, this is really urgent.
I've been looking for answers all around but can't seem to find any.
    I'm using OSX Mavericks 10.9.2
I've tried fixing stuff with Network preferences, like changing IP address, renewing DHCP leace.
I also tried typing IP address, Subnet Mask, Router and DNS Sever manually... Nothing seems to be working.
Note: I know someone could suggest to "uninstall" the Thunderbolt Station driver, however, I can't find an "uninstallation file", even the CD that came with the docking station does not have it.

I had exactly the same problem today, and I was lucky enough to solve it.
    Here's what helped me:
First, I found a hint to Suspicious Package in this thread.
With Suspicious Package installed, I was able to identify the script in StarTech's installer pkg. It' called "postflight".
Amongst other things, postflight runs this command:
    sudo mv usr/share/sandbox/mDNSResponder.sb usr/share/sandbox/_mDNSResponder.sb
A quick check in Apple's knowledge base revealed, that the mDNSResponder is essential to use DNS (i.e. to resolve server names like www.apple.com) and bonjour.
I moved th mDNSResponder back to where it belongs:
    sudo mv usr/share/sandbox/_mDNSResponder.sb usr/share/sandbox/mDNSResponder.sb
After a reboot, everything worked fine again.
I have no idea, why StarTeck disables an essential tool. Let's assume it's an error ...
But after this experience, I didn't want the StarTech ethernet driver on my machine (I had installed it just for curiosity, anyway - yes, I know, I shouldn't have ...), so I removed the kext the installer had copied to my system:
    sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleIntel8 2580.kext /Users/myusername
(You see I didn't delete the kext directly, I just moved it away and tried another reboot. Now everything works fine, so I'm going to delete the kext entirely and paint a big red cross on StarTech's installer disk.
    Hope this helps.

  • Netflix Error W8158 After Installing ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock Software

I just bought a Yoga 13 with the Dock and it works quite well, except for this issue:
After installing the required software that came with the dock, certain Windows 8 Metro (full-screen) app stopped working.  The most obvious was the Netflix metro app (downloaded from Store).  The app starts normally, even takes you to your instant queue, but as soon as you start a stream, you get the W8158 error code, with the name of the failed driver in the text of the message.
I made several attempts to download the latest updates from Windows Update.  However, none of this fixed the problem.
The Dock added an uninstall shortcut to the start screen, and I ran this uninstaller, but this did NOT correct the problem.
I then ran the OneKey restore (kodos!  The recovery works beautifully), re-installed Netflix, and now all works perfectly. Unfortunately, I cannot use the Dock to use a second monitor.  Not good.
Ultimately, I think this may be a Netflix App issue.  Hopefully, someone will document a fix for this.

Have this same issue with a Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch.

  • Z68A-GD80(G3) Can no longer read external hd dock after flashing beta bios

I flashed E7672IMS.J31 Beta Bios because I was on a very old bios that was not compatible with my GTX 970 card I just bought.  Flashing the bios fixed my 970 compatibility but in the process made it so my 2 external hd docks no longer worked (at this time on windows 7).  self powered usb harddrives still worked though.  At this time my sata mode was IDE which I thought might have had to do with it since it doesnt have hotswap. I assumed it was an issue with some drivers I installed after flashing the beta bios and I was due for upgrading/reformatting anyways so I enabled AHCI and hot swap then did a clean install of windows 8.1.  The external hard drives still don't read!!   I've used multiple different hard drives and different usb ports including usb 2.0.  The docks are usb 3.0 and I use them daily to edit photos from my work.  Any ideas of things I could try?
    My pc:
    intel 2500k
    16gb Corsair vengeance ram
    MSI 970 GTX GPU
    Corsair 750w power supply
    Z68A-GD80(G3) motherboard
    E7672IMS.J31 Beta Bios

Could the issue be that I didn't download the Intel Management Driver after installing the beta bios I flashed?  Maybe I could try that first, which one from this list do I use with my pc setup?
    thanks for the help!

Ive just upgraded my late 2009 macbook, and things are not working properly. First of all, when I started the computer first time after installing Mountain Lion, some message advised me that some files were impossible to install. Once I wrote my password, and for now on, everytime I start the session, another window advise me that "Java SE 6" is missing, due that, the computer can't run some "CS5Service Manager". If I try to install it, the download ends with an error. If finally, you skip the istallation, you arrive to the dock, but the menu bar at the top of the screen doesn't show up.
In addition, my trackpad doesn't works either. I can move the arrow but i can't click anywhere, probably because the option of clicking by touching is disabeled and I can't performance a regular click.
I'll be very glad if someone know what the heck is happening with my computer. Anyway, I'm going to the genius bar next Saturday. Thx!

    We're sorry.

After installing the above mentioned update, my ipad will no longer turn on. I have just a black screen with the apple logo when I attach it to a power source.  Anyone else having this problem, please advise on how to fix.

IF RESET DOESN'T WORK, FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note: Data will be lost

  • AIR no longer works after installing Flash CS4

I recently upgraded Flash to CS4. After installing using AIR
has been impossible. I've uninstalled and reinstalled numerous
times. Tried removing all references to AIR within the registry and
reinstalling. Regardless, if I try to open an *.air installer file
in opens the dialog asking me to choose the file to run the file
type with. I can't find AIR anywhere in the list. I'm using Windows
    Vista.
This is a giant problem because I've become very accustomed
to using an AIR debugging app for my Flash development projects.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so were you able to
    resolve it?
    Thanks

By when you write "click on the address book", I'll presume you mean you click on the Address Book icon in the Dock.  Did you ever move around things in the Applications folder?  In general, it's not a good idea to move Apple's applications from their normal locations.
To verify this, click-and-hold on the Address Book icon, then when the pop-up menu appears, roll to "Options", then to "Show in Finder".  I'll guess that the folder of the resulting window is not of the Applications folder.
To fix the problem in the short run, drag the Address Book icon out of the Dock.  Then open the Applications folder, find Address Book, and drag it to the Doc.  Eventually you'll want to delete the old applications, but in Lion that's harder to do than previously.
