Hi all,
Below is a file that defines AClass and CClass. I was told to use the construction CClass toRet = (CClass) AClass.this.createDClass(); in method method in CClass, but I can't get it to work. I get the message "No enclosing instance of the type AClass is accessible in scope". What does this mean? What does "(CClass) AClass.this.createDClass()" mean, I have never seen that type of call before?

Multiple instances of the same bean class in session?

I�m trying to think of a way to have multiple instances of the same bean class in session scope using JSF. For example, let�s say that I have two <h:dataTable>s on the same page. They both use the backing bean called genericBean. Now, the content for genericBean will be different for each <h:dataTable>. In fact, the data source that backs genericBean is not known until runtime. It could be a database, web service, etc.
What I would like is for when JSF needs access genericBean instead of looking for the value with key �genericBean� in the session map it looks for �genericBean_[some runtime ID]�. I could specify this id in EL on a custom component, as a request parameter or whatever.
I think that I need the bean to be in session scope because the tables are complex and I want them to be editable.
I have some ideas about how I can do this but I was wondering if someone has already solved this problem or if there is a standard way to do this using tools like Shale, etc.

Well, I came up with an interesting solution to this so I thought that I would post it here.
I have a page that looks like this.

The idea is that I want component.jsp to be initialized differently based on the id param. The component managed bean is configured to be in session scope but I want the component instance for id a and id b to be different instances in session scope. Therefore, I added a custom variable resolver to handle this.

You can directly call the outer class method. Otherwise use the following way MyDialog.this.close(); (But there is no close() method in Dialog!!)

What do I need to set in order for each instance of the step type in the sequence to act individually?

I'm not able to change parameters on one step without it changing the parameters on another instance of the step within the same sequence. Is there something in the step type properties that I need to set to change this?
For instance, I have created a custom step called "Battery PWR" that the user can insert into a sequence, hit the "edit" button, set a control in a GUI to 12V and hit an "Okay" button so that the post-step condition causes the power supply voltage to change. Then, later in the sequence I want the user to be able to insert the same custom step, hit the edit button, set the control to 0V and hit an "Okay" button so that the post-step conditition causes the power supply to go to 0V. The problem is, when the user edits one of the steps, it causes the other step to change to the same value.
I know that this has a simple fix, just can't seem to find it.

I answered my own question. I was reading and writing to a file global instead of the step parameters, so I was basically overwriting my variables each time I edited the step. I'm obviously a novice TestStand user.

Hi Jaegen, this worked for me...
Open the typedef - don't worry, you aren't going to _save_ changes
Edit typedef as needed
[When done editing] copy connector-pane (select, ctrl-C)
File\Revert !!!
Select target-control and paste!
In LabVIEW 7.1, the edited/pre-reverted ... ouch ... control appears (and still connected to typedef).

If that file is an FLV file then Firefox should save it as such and not change the file extension.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Q: Can I deploy multiple instances of the same stateless session bean, but specify a different JNDI/datasource name in the deployment descriptor?
The method calls are all enclosed within a single invocation, just that I need to hit different databases (all with the same schema), and Id like to be able to lookup the EJB via a different JNDI name, and have the exact same functionality, just against different deployed datasources.
Does the spec allow/support this?
If not, any suggestions as to how to achieve this sort of functionality?
Im using JBoss 3.2.1 on Solaris, so Im not sure whether or not this is a JBoss "issue" or a limitation of the EJB Spec (or me being just plain wrong and trying to do something the "wrong way")

Well, this method is static because it doesn't need an instance of A. As MyCache is static. So I don't understand this ...

Yes ... after I changed it to static, too it worked.
Never had a situation before that I needed to make an
inner class static ...Well, now you had one. Non-static inner classes are indeed non-static and only exist within an instance of the enclosing class. :)

Objects of an "inner class" can access the instance of the enclosing class and its fields; therefore, they must have an implicit reference to the enclosing object, and cannot be instantiated in static context.
Maybe you are looking for a "nested class" instead, which does not have a reference to the enclosing object. To do that, you add the "static" keyword:

Can not call a static function with-in a instance of the object.

Another FYI.
I wanted to keep all of the "option" input parameters values for a new object that
i am creating in one place. I thought that the easiest way would be to use a
static function that returns a value; one function for each option value.
I was looking for a way to define "constants" that are not stored in
the persistent data of the object, but could be reference each time
the object is used.
After creating the static functions in both the "type" and "body" components,
I created the method that acutally receives the option input values.
In this method I used a "case" statement. I tested the input parameter
value, which should be one of the option values.
I used a set of "WHEN conditions" that called the same
static functions to get the exact same values that the user should
pass in.
When I try to store this new version, I get the error:
"PLS-00587: a static method cannot be invoked on an instance value"
It points to the first "when statifc_function()" of the case function.
This seems weird!
If I can call the static method from the "type object" without creating
and instance of an object, then why can't I call it within the body
of a method of an instance of the object type?
This doesn't seem appropriate,
unless this implementation of objects is trying to avoid some type
of "recursion"?
If there is some other reason, I can not think of it.

How do I make Step Types in the Type palette be "master" versions which all sequence files on a particular should use? (since this only seems to "half work")

The situation I would like is to have a library of step types which sequence developers can use. Therefore if new step types need to be added, or existing ones modified - all that needs to be done is to roll out a new MyTypes.ini (for example), and the code modules/substeps.
Scenarios:
If I create types in MyTypes.ini (make sure "Attach to this file" is checked, so they get saved here). I can then create a sequence file using these step types. No problem so far.
I can open the type palette, modify the step properties, and save. When I go back to my sequence file an asterisk appears (saying it needs to be saved, even if I have opened it from scratch). The properties have been updated to reflect what is in the Type Palette. Still no problem (Type versions are the same in the sequence file and type palette).
This is where the problem appears:
If I change a step type (in the Type Palette) from using a code module to using a Post-Step substep instead (changing the module adaptor to "None") - any instances do NOT update when you open sequence files. (The same happens vice versa also).
Please note that the "Type version" listed in the sequence file DOES match that listed in the Type Palette - the properties are the same but the manner in which the code modules are called is DIFFERENT! This then can lead to to runtime errors if the old code module has been deleted for example.
The only way around this is to open EVERY sequence file that contains an instance of the step type, and make sure that you have "Apply changes to all loaded instances of this type" checked in the step type properties dialog. This is is not a good solution since files could be missed, and is very time consuming if you have hundreds of sequence files!
What I need is that the Type Palette on any particular station contains the MASTER copies of each type. These are loaded whenever a sequence file is loaded and NOT retreived from the sequence file. As discussed above this seems to work when you modify properties - but doesnt work fine if you change the way in which code modules are called.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation?

I had a system recently containing seven sequence files, approx 20 subsequences in each, and around 10-20 steps in each sub-sequence. Every step (except for the NI non-code module types) was an instance of a step type.
Each one of these steps had an Edit sub-step and a code module called through the code module adapter.
In order to make these into "wrapped up" step types it was decided to move the code module to a Post-Step substep (as also done in the NI-IVI step types) - so that developers cannot fiddle with the code prototype or module.
In order to do this I had to open all 7 of the sequence files, make the changes and then ensure that "Apply changes in this dialog to a loaded instances" was checked. This seems to sort of work, but some steps started causing Error 17502 (System Error) when you configure them (call the Edit substep). Over the course of the past few months I have had to effectively check every instance of a type to see if it works (deleting the step and replacing it when it doesnt). Other strange things happened like some of the step type instances now have the "None" (adapter) icon associated with them - but both still work.
The idea of creating a type-def of a step type is a good one, but frustrating that it doesnt seem to fully work. Why should the sequence file also store a version of the step-type - which is what is effectively causing this problem - why not make it so that if you dont have the step types installed in the type palette - TOUGH! How can I check an object is an instance of any type within an array of related types?

In LabVIEW, it's possible to check the runtime type of an object using To More Specific Class.vi. One usage of this would be to perform a safety check if some kind of class uses instances of another kind of class but is only able to handle a subset of that class' child types.
For instance, let's say you had Beverage.lvclass, which represents an abstract type of product, and several subclasses: Coffee.lvclass, Tea.lvclass and Soda.lvclass.
We also have a Person.lvclass which can drink beverages. A person also has preferences about the drinks they do or do not like:

What I'm finding is that no error is generated and instead I get "Yum, I love tea!", "Yum, I love coffee!" and "Yum, I love soda!". My guess is that To More Specific Class.vi casts to the static type of the "target class" input wire rather than its runtime type - and because I'm passing in elements from an array of types, the wire's static type is upcasted to the most specific type that is a superclass of the types in the array - which would be Beverage.lvclass. And so the cast is trying to determine if an object of static type Beverage.lvclass is an instance of Beverage.lvclass, which will of course be the case all the time.
Is there any way to make LabVIEW check against the most specific runtype type of an object? As in, is there something I could do that, in this example case, would allow me to get the required behaviour of Joe throwing an error when he's made to drink soda? Or is this another limitation of LabVIEW that I'm going to have to live with?

Multiple Instances of SubVi-Type

Hi there !
I'm new at LV so please excuse me, in the case my question is about
something trivial.
My Problem is to create several Instances of the same SubVI-Type.
In the process control app. I have to implement, a large flow schematic
has to be displayed/monitored. Because of the complexity of the
schemnatic, the user shall be able to open SubVIs to get detailed
information to some components, e.g, latch valve status, number of
switching cycles etc. The type of the SubVI is the same for a couple of
components in the schematic. To avoid creating n equal SubVI-Files I
found it could be better to create an instance of the SubVI type at
runtime.
Can anyone help me, or are there any examples at NI ?

Thank you both for the help. I used the Open VI reference and Call by Reference and created a stricly typed VI reference to call the subvi dynamically. Attached is a screenshot of the block diagram.
