No Illuminate Keyboard Checkbox In Preferences

I have a new 2.0GHz MacBook, but the illuminated keyboard feature is nowhere to be found. My screen dims when the light in the room dims, but the keyboard light does not come on. When I go into preferences>mouse and keyboard>keyboard, I understand that there is supposed to be a checkbox to turn it on, but there is no check box there. What should I do??

The 2.0GHz model does not have a backlit keyboard. It's only available on the 2.4GHz model. The specifications are clear on this:
http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html
2.0GHz MacBook
• Built-in full-size keyboard with 78 (U.S.) or 79 (ISO) keys, including 12 function keys and 4 arrow keys (inverted “T” arrangement)
2.4GHz MacBook
• Built-in full-size illuminated keyboard with 78 (U.S.) or 79 (ISO) keys, including 12 function keys and 4 arrow keys (inverted “T” arrangement)

"illuminate keyboard in low light conditions " box is missing under keyboard preferences and my keyboard backlight is not lit.
    Any help?

Did you used to have the option?  I did, and when my keyboard backlight stopped working, I followed instructions on 'Resetting the System Management Controller' http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964.  After I did that, the menu option completely disappeared, and I can't get it back.
I have the 2010 MacBook Pro (Intel), it used to work, but since moving to Lion, it hasn't, and now the option is gone altogether.

  • 10.6.7 bugs "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions"

After I update to 10.6.7, my backlight keyboard from my MBP, make problems.
So, I enter on System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard and then I deactivate "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions". After this I use the manual commands from F8, F9, F10. When I use manual, the "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" active again.
Conclusion: even when I use manual commands for keyboard illumination, that option activate only. Any key I press when that option is not active, it`s activating only.
So I think that a bug...

Hi, here I have the same behavior, and I also think it's a BUG, because if I configure the machine to manually adjust the intensity of something, I expect the machine to behave like I want and not like it WANTS.
This is almost the same as the first time I installed Windows 95, that shi7 take over the control of my computer!
I want to CONTROL my laptop!!!!!

  • Cannot Access Keyboard and Mouse Preferences

For some reason I've had lots of problems accessing the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane of the System Preferences.
Prior, I could open the pane, and whenever i switched between keyboard, mouse and trackpad, I would get overlap. Basically, bits and pieces from each setting wouldn't disappear when the new device (either keyboard, or trackpad, or mouse, etc) was selected, so everything would look mumble-jumbled.
Now, however, I can't even open the settings. I've rebooted, Repaired permissions and relaunched finder, but have had no luck. When I click on the Keyboard and mouse Button, all I get is a message in the title bar of the window itself saying: "Loading Keyboard & Mouse..." with no effect. Any ideas???

I was having the same problem too. I deleted some preference file (sorry I can't remember which one, I found it here on the forums) and it started working. Sort of... Now I can actually open up the "Keyboard and Mouse" pane, but when I click on the mouse button I don't have the correct options.
I have a 2-button wheel mouse connected, but I don't have the option to assign the wheel button a function. I can't assign the left and right buttons functions either. The only option is to make the "Primary mouse button" left or right. It also has controls for tracking speed, scroll speed, and double-click speed. But I've lost the ability to assign the buttons to the functions I want them assigned to.
The even stranger part is that the buttons do what I want them to do still. My right button acts like a right-click (control-click) even though it doesn't show on the mouse preferences.
I want to be able to change the wheel button so that it doesn't activate my Dashboard but I can't. If I press too hard while scrolling up or down with the wheel the Dashboard is activated. It's so annoying...

The favorites list disapeared from finder's sidebar. The checkboxes on preferences to put them back won't work. What should I do to have them back?

Nope... the word "Favorites" doesn't even appear on the sidebar. As I mentioned, I went to <preferences><sidebar> and all the favorites are unchecked. I tryed to check them but it looks like the checkboxes are disabled.

  • HT4882 Apple Support Update: No longer an option to Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light.

This Apple Support page appears to be outdated:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4882
My Mid 2012 MacBook Pro has no option to Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light.
The option now offered, Adjust keyboard brightness in low light, does not enable the keyboard backlight to be completely turned off.
The ability to completely turn off keyboard backlighting should be an option, Apple -- get on it, please. Every little bit of energy which users can opt to save will extend charge duration and battery life, and thus should be provided.
Also, in certain situations, I want less light, and the light from the keyboard is at those times a cause of light pollution and distraction.

I've found an answer to my question about how to turn off the keyboard backlighting on the mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13":
The F5 function key's primary function is as the Keyboard Backlight Dimmer, and can dim keyboard backlighting all the way to nothing.  (F6 is Keyboard Backlight Brightener).
Nonetheless, This Apple Support page is still incorrect:

  • HT4882 Option disappeared: "Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light"

    Greetings,
My backlight keyboard use to work, but now it doesn't and the option to "Automatically illuminate kayboard in low light" is missing.
    1) I have done SMC reset
    2) VRAM Reset
    3) All other top row functions like screen brightness and sound work
    4) if I press option + f5  or option +f6 the keyboard system preferences window opens up.
    5) nothing happens at all when f5 or f6 is pressed alone.
Did apple remove support for my backlight in Mountain Lion 10.8????

    Hi,
I am also having the same issue, keyboard backlight is inactive, noway i cam make it active.
In the key board system prefrence "Automatically illuminate kayboard in low light" is missing too.
Supersingly it all got started only after i upgraded the OS from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Even though the latest software update to 10.8.2, it's not been fixed.
Anyone having any working idea to address this issue?
Hope apple support will come out with some solution for this.
    Thanks

  • Setting Safari Keyboard Shortcutsin System Preferences

    Hello All,
I'm currently experiencing some problems setting keyboard shortcuts for Safari in System Preferences. Here is what I have done:
    1) Close Safari
    2) Open up "System Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts"
    3) Add "Safari" to "Application Shortcuts", and add the shortcut (currently being used by for a different shortcut)
    4) Open Safari
In order for my shortcut to work, I must go to the tab at the tob of the screen where the shortcut is located.
In my case, i'm using Clear History as the shortcut, with the shortcut being Apple-H (which is being used for Hide). Initially Apple-H continues to Hide. The only time where the shortcut Apple-H works for Clear History, as set in Keyboard Shortcuts, is when I click on History and see the the Clear History shortcut set as Apple-H.
I find the Keyboard Shortcut kind of useless as the only time I can use the custom Keyboard Shortcut is when I click on the History tab at the top of the screen.
Please note that I have tried other shortcuts for Clear History and they do not work. Other shortcuts do work.
Anyway I can get Keyboard Shortcuts to be permanent, and not require me to click on the History Tab to get them to work.
    Thanks!
    Devin

What is your system preference >> keyboard shortcut set to for Dashboard, is it F12 or CMD F12?
If you are not holding down CMD, and your OS is 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 then you may have another problem. See below

  • Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions always on

I recently had to have a replacement logic board in my 2010 MBP and since that day I've not been able to keep the checkbox for this turned off!
It somehow manages to turn itself back on.
I've reset the PRAM, repaired Disk Permissions and reset the SMC but nothing.
To be honest I'm losing the will to live with my MBP. It's just one problem after another (the main one being a constant blue screen of death that randomly decides it wants to interupt my working day!)

Thanks for the replies. I'm slightly confused as to why I'm only getting this happen now. I don't want to download another app, lab tick, to control something that I should simply be able to turn off!
I've turned down and then off the backlight with the dim key on the keyboard so we'll see what happens tomorrow as to whether it plays up again.

  • Keyboard and mose preferences

    Hi!
I have a strange problem... On my 12" iBook G4, when going to System Preferences->Keyboard and mouse, i find only a blank page. There isn't any option, any text. Nothing. How could i solve this really annoying problem? Thanks in advance, Paolo
    iBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi Paopaperino,
ok, this means you are missing some system files.
There are two things you can do:
    1. Do an Archive and Install. This will resolve the problem for sure. All your personal stuff will stay intact, but you will have to apply all software updates again, as this will set you back to 10.4. The best way to update your installation back to 10.4.3 is to download the Combo Updater.
    2. Try Pacifist. This will allow you to extract the missing files from your Tiger DVD/CD. However, you do not know exactly which files are missing. Luckily, Pacifist now includes a feature that allows you to check for missing files. You just have to select the right package to check (I would guess that it is MacOSX10.4.pkg, but again I am not sure).

  • Is there a way to move my keyboard shortcuts and preferences from CS3 to CS5?

I just loaded CS5 and I'm starting to work with it. Big difference from CS3 and I'm finding things don't work the same at all. Anything i can do to make this seem more familiar, like using the same keyboard shortcuts and workspaces?

Workspaces are stored as XML files in your user profile on Windows or the user library on Mac, in a subfolder called, strangely enough, workspaces.
You may have run afoul of the new "content grabber" in the center of a frame that allows you to move the content without changing tools. Looks sort of like a dounut, or the center spot on some SLR camera focus viewfinders. You'll either love it or hate it, and it can be switched on or off in the View menu.

  • FEATURE REQUEST: illuminate keyboard on wake from sleep and passwd required

I've had my MBA for about a week and a half now. Slick little machine. Love it. There's one thing it doesn't do that's driving me crazy. Well, not literally crazy, but it is annoying. To reproduce:
    1. System Preferences -> Security -> check "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver." Quit System Preferences.
    2. Press F6 enough times to make sure the keys are illuminated.
    3. Close the display and wait for the computer to go to sleep.
    4. Open the display and wait for the computer to wake.
    5. The screen will turn on and the password prompt will appear. However, the keys are not illuminted! If you're in the dark, you have to hunt for the right keys to enter your password.
    6. After you enter your password, you are brought back to whatever you were doing when you closed the display in step 3, and the keys light up.
The keys should light up when you open the display, not once you've unlocked the machine!
    Bug!

It's best you send this directly to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback
    Have a nice day.

  • Keyboard viewer display preferences

I am using the onscreen keyboard viewer on some kiosks and they all look different. One just has the alpha keys, one has the alpha and number keys and one has the alpha keys, numbers and arrow keys. I have no idea why they are different or how to change them. Dragging their size does not affect the layout. Can someone please tell me how to change the display on the keyboard viewer.
    Thanks!

    Hi everybody,
that's my first post into Apple discussions, so I hope I'm posting into the right forum

    No need to thank me
I just like to always have "clean" threads and if the answer is somewhere else, I link to that particular thread
Otherwise everybody who looks for a solution for the same question would have to search through the forum to find my other thread
That's like always leaving a place for the next to come just the way I would like that place to be when I arrive...
