No more Time Machine with AEBS

I have a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air that were both happily using TM over AEBS. The MBP Logic Board was replaced so I started to setup a new TM backup only to find that it wasn't working over AEBS. Doing some research I found this:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038
The Macbook Air still works. I'm guessing because it already has a sparsebundle. I cannot get TM on the MBP to see the AEBS Airdisk in TM anymore.
I'm really upset that this functionality was quietly removed. Notice that if you buy a Time Capsule you can perform backups on a USB drive attached to the Time Capsule or use the internal disks.
And I have deleted the original sparsbundle for the MBP as I was going to start over with a fresh backup.

Thanks V.K. I unplugged the AEBS and plugged it back in and the backup is executing now. I had gotten it working over last night, but TM was only showing 'Now' this morning
this usually indicates that the sparse bundle is not being mounted automatically when you enter TM.
is the drive plugged into AEBS at the moment?
even after manually creating a new backup using 'backup now'. If this attempt yields the same results I will follow the steps you provided in your reply.
The post I reference is only a month old. Is there another Apple KB regarding this that you are referencing?
no, but that date means nothing. they tweak these KB articles all the time and always put the latest date on them. I watch the TM KB articles closely and this one has been up for months.

  • Time Machine with AEBS

I know this has been asked many times, but still no clear answers.
I really want to get Time Machine to work with Leopard over my Airport Extreme N. I have somewhat tested this, and it seems to work, but I am hoping to get confirmations.
    I have been reading that:
    1. Plug your External HD into your Mac via USB
    2. Setup Time Machine as normal, but do not do the initial backup
    3. Unplug the external HD from the Mac
    4. Plug the external HD into the AEBS
    5. Mount the External HD from the AEBS
    6. Perform the initial backup through Time Machine and everything should work wirelessly.
Is this indeed correct? And any major issues by doing this? I was able to get to step 6 on the Macs at work, but the initial backup was so slow, I did not have time to complete the initial backup. I am hoping somewhere out there somebody has done it.
I also tried doing the initial backup via USB, but when I connected the HD to AEBS, it was able to recognize the drive, BUT it wanted to do the initial backup all over again.

    Hi all,
this is, what has worked so far...
    1. Set up the Airport drive as afp-mountable
    Quote from another thread:
    1) Mount your volume that you want to use for TM
    2) In terminal cd to volume "cd /Volume/<volume name>"
    3) In terminal "touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported" this will create an invisible file.
    4) In terminal "sudo chown root:admin .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    5) In terminal "sudo chmod 1775 .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    6) In terminal "ls -l -a" the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file should be -rwxrwxr-t
    End quote
    2. Then in finder you can connect to server via afp://<name of AEBS>.local./<Name of HD>
    3. The HD is now available. You find it as sparse bundle. The icon on the desktop is that of a simple mounted disk image (not the time machine sign on it).
    4. Time machine has now started and neede about 12 hours for the first backup. The backup could also be interrupted, no problem.
    5. The next incremental backup was only some KB.
    But:
    6. When starting time machine from some finder window I'm not able to roll back in time!
    Edit:
And the mounted disk always disappears again. The relocation procedure is:
    7. Restart the AEBS.
    8. Remount the disk via finder.
So, for me it is not clear, whether it is really useful this way.
    Best, Fernando

  • Using time machine with uverse

How to set up time machine with uverse

Time Machine is software.....to allow your Mac to back up its contents to another hard drive.
You may be asking about a Time Capsule......which is hardware.....a router with a built in hard drive that stores the Time Machine backups from a Mac.
Maybe you could provide a bit more information to clarify what it is that you want to do.

  • I just bought and backed up my computer and time machine with a "Seagate BackUp Plus for Mac". Now my time machine is empty. Panicked. can anyone help?

I just bought and backed up my computer and time machine with a "Seagate BackUp Plus for Mac". Now my time machine is empty. Panicked. can anyone help?

    Lets start over...
Please restart the network.. shut down everything..
Restart in order.. modem.. router.. if different to TC.. or TC.. client devices.. wait 2min between each startup.
If the TC does not show up on the computer, in finder.. then we need more info.. what OS are you running?
Does the TC show up in Airport utility? Are you running wireless or ethernet?
If you still have issues.. plug the TC directly into the computer by ethernet.
Do a full factory reset of the TC.. and see if it now shows up.
Please tell us exactly what model TC it is and how old.. the A1xxx model number from the base will help if you don't know.
You take a screen shot of the TC opened in finder.
    eg..
My TC is named Tardis4.. click on it.. and then open the data folder.. on this one called Tardisdata.
Then take a screen shot of it so we can see what the problem is.. screenshot.. with area selection.. control + shift + 4 .. the picture goes into the desktop.. and then you click the picture icon in the posting web page controls and select the picture.

  • When using time machine with external hardrive to backup, some music items from iTunes and some photos from iPhoto do not transfer to backup hardrive.  What am I ding wrong?  Using latest version of mountain lion.

When I use time machine with my external harddrive to back up computer, some music from iTunes library, and some photos from iPhoto library are missing when I check backup disk.  I am using latest version of mountain lion.  Am I doing something wrong?

First, Time Machine doesn't completely back up the iPhoto library while iPhoto is running. Make sure you quit iPhoto after making any changes to allow a backup to take place.
This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including both overt and hidden exclusions. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

  • Setup Time Capsule as wireless device and Time Machine with Ethernet?

I'm running the latest version of Airport Utility (6.3.4) with a TC a1254 and Macbook Pro platinum late 2007.
      I have a modem/router Ryge model Wa41r.
Ive tried everything I could find in the forums and in expert pages and can't configure my Time Capsule as a Wireless Device connected to the modem/router and Time Machine with Ethernet Cable.
I tried letting it configure itself, it held the wifi signal for over 5 min then turned off. Never that way worked again.
Then I configured with other examples seen in Apple communities and expert Apple pages, but it conflicted with my routers signal. I turned off the Wireless Lan Interface and it turned off the Ethernet cable with the connection as well. I tried giving my TC different IP address.
So my Time Capsule  gives me this status in flicking amber: Internet connection and Conflicting DCHP Range. (when I connect to my Mac the Internet works)
And strangely the wireless signal appears in my Macbook but not in my Android Phone.
Works fine doing backups when asked via ethernet.
Also when I go to check on it on Airport Utility in other wifi devices it appears but says "Device Not Found - device name- was previously part of your network. Check that is still in range...etc"

I would like to help you but you need to clear up some things..
A Time Capsule is plugged into the network by ethernet.. you back up to it using wireless or ethernet.. it should make no difference which.
    When you say this..
Ive tried everything I could find in the forums and in expert pages and can't configure my Time Capsule as a Wireless Device connected to the modem/router and Time Machine with Ethernet Cable.
I cannot understand.. The Time Capsule plugs into the main modem router.. and should be in bridge mode..
Time Machine is not hardware.. it is  the backup software on the computer.. there is no way you can connect Time Machine with ethernet cable. .you can connect the computer with Ethernet Cable..
But you need to clarify please.
If you wish to connect TC to the Modem router by wireless this is not possible. It must connect by ethernet.
You can connect your computer to it using either wireless or ethernet.
And strangely the wireless signal appears in my Macbook but not in my Android Phone.
It is likely the wireless name is not valid.
Make sure all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. 2-20 characters.. Do not use the Apple recommended names.. they can be totally wrong.
Also the password for wireless should be 8-20 characters but same rules.. pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.
    Start again.
    Factory reset the TC.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Plug it into the main router by ethernet.
Do the setup via the airport utility in a Mac or iOS device.
    Follow the setup instructions above.
Then you can connect to the TC LAN ports by ethernet or use wireless on the computer.
Your modem WA41R. I cannot find details in English . .they are all Spanish so we may be having difficulty of language here.
But if the modem is working as router the TC has to be in bridge mode.. it will not work properly in router mode.
So you should see it set as bridge here.

  • Time Capsule and time machine with third party router

    Hi,
This is the first time I use this site.
I have over three years old Mackbook.
    APP has expired.
Now I want to know how to set up time capsule in a new environment.
I moved from Australian and Singapore.
I was using Time Capsule and Airport Extreme in Australia.
    I have moved to Singapore.
I am using router provided by Singtell(Singapore Telecommunication). I do not have an Airport Extreme anymore. My housemate and I are using wireless internet-sharing. Needless to say that internet provider is SingTell.
Now I would like to know how to use time capsule and time machine with the network created with a router provided by SingTell.
    What I did so far is;
Connected the time capsule to the power point.
Orange lamp lit and flashed for a few second and stop. Orange lamp stayed on.
Apple Utility does not recognise Time Capsule.
I prefer to use it wirelessly.
There are only two USB cable ports installed.
One is used to synchronize iPhone.
Other is used for a printer.
but if it is not possible, wired would be OK.

I hope that someone able to give me an answer for this.
    Cheers,

In this case the apple support people reveal a truly poor understanding.
You must bridge something.. you either bridge the TC.. which 90% of people do.. or you bridge the dsl router.. which some people do manage to do.. You will have to look that up for your modem and check with verizon if they support pppoe authentication.
IMHO just bridge the TC as you were told not to do.. as they are simply wrong about that.
If you already tried this and it didn't work.. try again.. it is the correct approach.
You have no choice. But this time let me suggest you do it using the 5.6 airport utility.. as the apple toyland v6 airport utility is likely half your trouble.
So here is how to get the utility into your computer.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
Then open the manual setup on the 5.6 utility.. go to internet tab. Connection sharing.. off bridged mode.
    Select this and update..
Then all your IP addresses will be wrong.. I suspect this is where things are going wrong.. and messing you up.
Once the TC is bridged.. turn off everything and restart.. in correct order.. modem.. TC.. client computers etc. 2min gap between each.

  • How can I restore my data from iCal? I didn't make any backup, but I use  time machine with an external HD. I deleted iCal when I deleted my gmail account. I have tried to restore, but I can only restore the iCal software and not the data.

How can I restore my data from iCal? I didn't make any backup, but I use  time machine with an external HD. I deleted iCal when I deleted my gmail account. I have tried to restore, but I can only restore the iCal software and not the data.

    So what is your question?
If you forgot your encryption password:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

  • When I try to enter a time machine with Snow Leopard backups Lion I get an error code -6584 ... how to fix?

    Hi.
I had a first gen time machine with backups all on Snow Leopard.
This died (power supply), and I bought a new time capsule, because to fix the old one would cost nearly the same amount.
Since, I have started using Lion, and backed up onto my new time capsule in Lion.
Unfortunately, there was a file I deleted that I really need for a Logic Audio project, that is only present on the old time capsule.
I got the old time capsule fixed, so it powers up. I even extended my current wireless network with it. I can see inside it -- all the data that I dragged onto its HD in the past is present, and the "Sparse Bundle" containing the data for the time capsule save-states is present too.
Now, when I try to "Enter" my old time capsule, I get this error message:
I tried entering the time machine via WiFi and via ethernet, to no avail.
Can anyone help me to access these old save states on my old "snow leopard" time capsule?
I was thinking maybe I need to try to access it from a machine with Snow Leopard?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue. Does anybody know why this has happened

  • Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule?

Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule via the USB port?  My current Time Machine has a total capacity of 1TB.  I'd like to double or triple its memory.  I don't want to use the external hard drive in lieu of the Time Capsule hard drive.  I'd like to use it in addition to.  Just don't know if/how it's possible.
This is another one of those questions that I've searched the web for answers, and have gotten tricky answers back.  So now I'm trying to introduce a clean slate to the mix.
    Thank you for your time!

Well, what you mentioning is possible.  However, I don't know whether it's supported (as in, "easy to set up.").  Time Machine officially supports backing up to a locally attached drive, to a machine running a Time Machine server (i.e. running OS X Server software), and to a Time Capsule.  I don't know that it officially supports a drive attached to an AirPort or to a Time Capsule.  Though I know some people have gotten it to work.
Best I can say is to try it.  Plug the drive into the Time Capsule, ensure it's shared on the network, and then try and set it as a backup target from a machine in the Time Machine backup panel (you'll need to ensure it's mounted first).  If it works, you're all set.

  • Using Time Machine with a network Drive

I recently bought a WD My Book Live network drive to use as my Time Machine backup. I was previously using a USB external HD for Time Machine with no problems. I have set up the new network drive but when I go in to Time Machine to select it as the drive to back up to, it is not showing up. The only drive I see is my old USB external HD. I have the latest firmware for the network drive and I am running Mac OSX10.5.8. Any suggestions?

If you bought the WD in a USB enclosure it probably came formatted with NTFS (Windows). Time Machine can't use NTFS drives or SMB (Windows) network shares as a backup destination because that format does not allow the proper permissions to be set. If this is the case with your drive, open Disk Utility and reformat your new drive (NOT you system drive!!) with HFS+ aka 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' and then the drive should show up as a target selection in Time Machine.

  • Time machine with network drive?

I heard I could use time machine with the hard drive I have connected to my airport extreme.  Problem is I can't get the disk to appear in the time machine set up window as an option

Unfortunately Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme USB port. Doing so is not recommended as most users who attempt this end up with corrupted backups over time. However, you could use a different backup solution with this configuration, just not Time Machine.
