No password prompt on any software installation

I'm having a problem with Snow Leopard.
Performed a clean install of 10.6 from disc.
Ran all updates, now running at 10.6.2.
Installed iWork and was asked for admin password to install.
Then added some HP printer drivers via software update and noticed that i wasn't asked for admin password when downloading or installing.
Thought this was funny so downloaded Firefox and Google Earth and installed them and i wasn't asked for admin password to install.
Is this normal?
Ran repair disk permissions and got the following message:
"Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."
Is this related?
Any help appreciated, might save me a trip to the Genius bar.

  • Help Please, forgot my new   admin password..  so im stuck at password prompts.. any ideas to retireve it or make a new one?

I went to turn off file vault andafter much prompting i had to change my password to login. After trying to use the new password i made it turns out it isnt correct...
i know i did something wrong in the process..any ideas?

    Hi R%%^Y,
Since you changed your admin password via the Install disc, your keychain passwod is stil set to the old one. You need to make the keychain password the same as your login password.
First, try opening Keychain First Aid by opening Keychain Access and going to Keychain Access (right next to the Apple menu) and coming down to Keychain First Aid.
Click Verify and see what happends. If it comes up with issues, hit the repair button.
if for some reason, you can't repair it, take a look at keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password.
Hope this helps and let me know how it goes.

  • Shell script for password prompt

    Hi
I am using Solaris9 and trying to change password of a user with command:
    passwd userid
i want password to be given from text file or command line so that password is not prompted on the command line. Is there any way to do this?
I guess i am able to force the carriage return to be entered while entering the password from command line.
This is what I am doing:
    passwd userid << EOF
    newpassword
    newpassword
    EOF
But after this, it still gives me New Password prompt. Any help will be appreciated.

You could have a look at 'expect', it can set the password for you..

  • Software installation tracker

A while ago I wanted to try out a program I found on SourceForge.
I downloaded the source code, ran the configure script with the prefix parameter and built it under a non-root user account:
    ./configure --prefix=~/testprog
    make
    make install
During the "make install", it wanted to write a file into /usr/lib/python3.3/site-packages/ but as a non-root user I wasn't allowed.
Now I was thinking, are there any software installation trackers running on Linux ?
I mean a program that monitors the disk changes done by a specific process and writes them to a file or a database.
I remember using such a program running on Windows some years ago, however I can't remember its name anymore.
It was even able to undo all the changes.
Does anyone know of such a program running on Linux ?
    Kind regards,
    gj

I played a bit with pacman and makepkg but I'm not completely convinced.
As a test, I created an empty configure script (chmodded to 755) and a Makefile with these lines:
    all:
    echo all >&2
    install:
    echo install >&2
    echo 1 > ~/installed
    clean:
    echo clean >&2
    rm ~/installed
    distclean:
    echo distclean >&2
    rm ~/installed
    uninstall:
    echo uninstall >&2
    rm ~/installed
    check:
    echo check >&2
So, when "make install" is executed, a file named "installed" will be created in my home directory.
When "make clean" is executed, this "installed" file will be removed.
I created a PKGBUILD file based on the notes of the online manual.
When I run makepkg afterwards, a new package file is created but also the "installed" file.
When I tried to uninstall my package (sudo -s pacman -R mypackage), an error message tells me that my package isn't installed yet.
When I remove the "installed" file manually and I install my new package (sudo -s pacman -U mypackage-1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz), the package seems to be installed but there is no "installed" file ?

I recently bought a secondhand PowerBook G4 but there were no installation discs with it and at present I am unable to install any software, where is it possible to obtain a set of the discs so that I can reinstall the software to try and resolve this problem.
    Many thanks.

You may also want to try eBay. Finding disks for a machine that old will be difficult though.

  • Outlook password prompt after CU7 installation

    Hi
I have Exchange 2013 in a resource forest. We use linked mailboxes.
The clients are connecting using Outlook Anywhere.
    As Authentication we use NTLM.
This Weekend I installed CU7. This morning all users received a passwort prompt when starting outlook. After entering the password, Outlook can be closed and restarted again without a password prompt. But after a reboot of the client, the password prompt
    comes again.
    Any Suggestion?
    Regards
    Peter

    Hi Peter,
I have never seen CU7 removed WindowsIntegrated authentication from AutoDiscover VD before, maybe some other reasons cause this. Great information. Thanks for your generous sharing : )

  • Should I purchase Anti-Virus or any software?!?

I'm new to Mac. I purchased a Macbook Pro in the summer and I want to know if I should purchase any software to help maintain my computer...? This is my first Apple.....
    Thanks!!

Apple has done an excellent job in making Mac OS X very self sufficient. For example, defragging (called pre-binding in the Unix world) is done automatically every time you complete the installation of new software. The system also schedules standard maintenance (called cron jobs) to occur automatically (daily, weekly, and monthly). You generally do not have to worry about running these, however they can be executed manually at any time via the use of the following terminal commands:
    sudo periodic daily
    sudo periodic weekly
    sudo periodic monthly
    sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
    sudo update_prebinding -root / -force
For those that do not like to dive into the Terminal, I recommend a shareware tool called Cocktail that incorporates a variety of system maintenance tools into a very easy to use GUI.
    http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php
As far as Anti-Virus, I do not feel it is worth running on the Mac. When you are using your system, you are running as a User not Administrator. When you perform an administrative action, the system prompts you for your password and runs the single command with elevated privileges. In the unlikely event that you received a virus or trojan, you would have to enter your admin password in for it to cause significant damage. A little caution when downloading and installing software can go a long way. If you plan to use Boot Camp, VMware Fusion, or Parallels to run Windows on your Mac, I would definitely have AV running in Windows.
I hope that helps and enjoy your new Mac.

  • Windows hangs boot after upgrading any software

    Hi,
My Windows 8 Pro x64 Dell XPS8500 machine developed a really weird problem.  (The problem actually began a while back - first noticed maybe 4-6 month ago - but only now trying to fix it.)  It re/boots fine so long as I don't try to install anything.
However, installing any software upgrades causes Windows to hang on boot.  The software upgrades that I tried are Evernote, iTunes, Java VM, and all of them are triggering the same behavior.  All this aforementioned software seeming doesn't have
anything in common.  The only known upgrades that do not appear to trigger the issue are Firefox and Chrome (where upgrades happen more or less in passive fashion)  There is no clear event that I can recall in the past that I can attribute this happening
to (i.e. I can't pin point to something like installing a driving and it failing immediately afterwards) - just one day a message popped up to upgrade iTunes, which I did, and then rebooted to experience the issue.
Here are the steps to describe what happens with a bit more detail and troubleshooting steps tried:
Manually launch upgrade of an existing software. (Tried Evernote, iTunes, Java VM)
Successfully go through the install/upgrade.  Seems irrelevant if software asks for reboot or not.  Machine works fine until rebooted.
Reboot the machine.  Machine shuts down without any issues.
BIOS POST is successful, and Dell logo with jumping/circulating dots comes up.
There is a normal flurry of hard-disk activity for a few seconds, which after a few seconds reduces to none or sometimes/occasionally to very brief flashing a few seconds apart.  This is where the problem is noticed.  It can stay like that for
hours if not days (normal boot takes about 20-30 seconds).
Typically, if there is no hard-disk activity at all, pressing the power button causes one brief flash, followed by one more about 1-3 seconds later, and no change.
The only recourse is to force turn off by holding power button for few seconds.
Letting it try to boot again leads to the same behavior.
Repeating attempts to boot 3-4 times causes Automatic Recovery to kick in.
The only way to get the machine to boot again is to use Recovery to restore to a previous state.  This sometimes requires to be done more than once and doesn't fix on the first try.
(Also, I enabled Win boot menu, and couple of times instead of waiting for Automatic Recovery to kick in, tried to use recovery through the menu - in that case it's more likely to require the procedure to be done more than once).
I tried to do a logged boot to capture log file in one of the cases where it boots - it appears to never produce \Windows\ntbtlog.txt file (possible I didn't do something right for this one, though I thought that file is never deleted and only grows)
Additional Info:  SysRestore currently displays only two available points:
    6/13/14 - Installed Evernote v. 5.4 - Type Install
6/9/14 - Automatic Restore Point - Type System
All other previous restore points (from having installed a few more updates and software in the 1.5 years I had the machine) are gone somewhere.
Choosing to revert to the second restore point (when selecting restore point from boot menu) as opposed to the first one and later booting successfully, for some reason the same restore points are listed again (so it doesn't seem to be truly reverting)
Nothing fruitful appears in the EventLog.  The only critical messages that i see there are both from SCM and one reads "The Dell Digital Delivery Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s)." and the other "The
system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly." (which is expected).  And there is a warn level entry about some Bluetooth device not being
able to enter power save mode.  That's it for system event logs.
At this point I'm totally stuck trying to figure this one out, or even trying to figure out how to obtain information on where it gets stuck.  This is worse than having a BSOD as with BSOD at least there is some info on what's happening.  Here
I don't even see where it gets stuck or what's preventing from booting successfully.
    Please help!!!

Again, let me clarify the situation as well as provide some additional information that I discovered since original post.  Per original post - I can boot into the system up and  until installer gets activated either by trying to uninstall or upgrade
existing software or install new one.  At the time, the only way I could get the system to boot again was to let it fail boot twice and on the third attempt let it perform system restore from a restore point, and then it would boot again (with all the
    installed/updated/uninstall changes wiped out)
Since then I discovered the following additional behavior points:
I managed to get it to accept couple of software upgrades by using roughly the following steps: let it fail boot twice.  On the third attempt instead of choosing system restore I instead cancel or choose advanced options (depending on what it offers).
Typically it goes either through some system analysis or disk check for errors - wait and it doesn't find anything.  When presented with a menu of other recovery options (like changing UEFI, command prompt, etc), I simply choose to exit and continue loading
windows.  At this point it sometimes (I'd say 1 out of 3 times) manages to boot successfully, retaining all the changes (i.e. retaining software updates and the like).  If it doesn't succeed booting, repeat until it does.  Using these steps
I managed to update most of software so far, including windows update.  But each time it's a struggle to get it to boot again.
Simply rebooting the system without any changes succeeds most of the time.  However, today I noticed that a plain reboot (without any installer/uninstaller/update or any other system/soft/config changes) doesn't always succeed, requiring the same process
as in previous bullet point to get it to boot again.
I also noticed an additional behavior - my keyboard an mouse have some buttons that are illuminated (on dell keyboard those are media buttons, and on the dell mouse it is mouse sensitivity indicator). I noticed that when windows boot up, the keyboard and
mouse lights go out simultaneously.  If they come back about a second or two later (with one flicker in between), then system boots up fine (the moment they come back, the system displays the logon screen with the seatle space needle).  However,
if they don't come back, then the boot will hang there for ever.  Is it possible that some driver sometimes succeeds to be loaded correctly, and sometimes fails to load causing Windows to perpetually wait for that driver to finish loading (which it never
does)?  If that sounds like a possibility, how can I find out what is it that windows is doing when it starts to perpetually wait for whatever it is waiting for?  Tell me what logs would help to understand that and how to capture those!
Also note that I run Avira Antivir antivirus (ever since I got this PC), and it doesn't flag anything suspicious on the system.  I also ran MalwareBytes scan which found no suspects, as well as GMER rootkit scanner (which as far as i can tell, also
    did not find anything suspicious).
There is another oddity that is going on with the system - may or may not be related, so mentioning just in case it is - which is that I'm using Dropbox, and it keeps creating "My Videos" folder on the Desktop, even though it is way outside of my dropbox
root.  Deleting the folder doesn't help as the moment I right-click on the Desktop, it re-appears.  It, oddly enough, also appears in C:\Users\{profile} folder right along side real "My Videos" folder.  Looking properties of both in explore
shows in the property pages that one is located in C:\Users\{profile} and another in C:\Users\{profile}\Desktop (and again, yet both of those explore shows in C:\Users\{profile}).  Like I said, not sure if these are related (I suspect not, but who knows),
    so mentioning just in case.
Note that I'm trying to fix it without going through refresh or reset since the first one would cause the pain to reinstall of all the software on the system (without any indication that this would solve the issue), and the later option would just completely
wipe out everything off of the system, which is even more painful, and again would not guarantee solution (e.g. if it is a bad driver that would get reinstalled anyway after wipe. Yes, I technically do have backups, but those are more for drastic case if my
harddrive crashes, and wouldn't want to rely on those to voluntarily wipe the system due to odd behaviors - too painful and time-consuming.  I'm looking for a solution to problem rather than just-start-from-the-beginning-because-it-is-easier approach.
Thanks, let me know how to get the troubleshooting info to get to root cause.

  • Can't install any software on my T61p laptop?

I have an issue with installing any software programs to my Lenovo Laptop. I have checked the CD ROM - diagnostics etc. The tests passed with flying colors. The music CD works great. I am using Windows XP.
I am sure that there is nothing wrong with a CD ROM because when I restore the system from the backup I did back in 3/19/2008 - it records any software that I like to install. I am using all the original installation CD's.
I don't want to keep it in the that state from 3/19/2008 because I would loose all my files plus I had a wireless Netgear installed which it was painful to install in a first place. I like to keep the setting I currently have and files but I NEED THIS CD ROM TO WORK.
I have tried to recover software from the 3/19/2008 date but they don't work either. Besides what is the point of not having not operational CD/RAM. I read online that sometimes VIRUS can reset the settings for installing software, but how this is possible. Why the Windows XP allows to switch such important settings.
I also checked the properties of CD/ROM for enable, disable and they set as enable. What is stopping recording on this laptop in the state I am in now. I have a virus software - no viruses either.
I have been dealing with this for 3 weeks now and I am out of ideas. I have called Lenovo and they said that they only deal with hardware issues. I have this computer less then 7 months and I have 2 year assistance from Lenovo.
I would appreciate if maybe some Lenovo Technical Rep would read this note so he/she can offer some ideas to deal with this issue. I do not want to restore this computer to factory settings or 3/19/2008 (then I am sure the CD/ROM would work)
    Thanks for your help.
    Kinga

Hi - thanks for trying to help me.
    1. I have received the computer on 3/05/2008. I have installed Adobe Photoshop, Picture Studio, Outlook Express, MC Word, Power Point, Excel, Business Cards creator, Symantec Antivirus and bunch of other programs that I had original CD's. At the time I had DSL- Cable internet Connection. I also, did all the Windows Updates and Lenovo Updates. I had Windows XP installed already as operating system by Lenovo.
    2. On 3/19/2008 I did a backups so the info with all the programs working properly were stored in computer's memory on drive C.
    3. On 10/10/2008 I have installed a Wireless Netgear with a help of Netgear support team. I have turned all the wireless radio's on, setup a network etc. I did not do any backup at the time.
    4. On 11/10/2008 the Symantec Antivirus cought a virus - Trojan Horse and stored in a Quarantine. Later on that day I wanted to open Adobe Photoshop to cut some pictures and graphics and the program was "FREEZING". I have tried to open Business Card Creator program and it was FREEZING as well.
I did a full system virus scan to make sure there is no viruses left. It was showing that one stored in quarantine. I also did a spyware scan LavaSoft - Advare and Seach and Destroy spyware. Some was removed. The programs were still freezing. The internet worked OK plus Outlook Express. I tried to figured out what to do for a few days.
    5. 11/14/08 - I have removed the Adobe Photoshop and Business Card Reader from Add/Remove programs feature. Then I have restarted a computer. I figured since I have original CD's so I will reinstall them. I have placed a CD in CD/ROM and I hear the reading but when I hit the install the CD was just spinning. It refuses to record anything. I click next/install so I can place registration numbers and I see no screen. Same with other CD. It freezes.
Well, then I tough that maybe the CD is damaged, so I have put it in another desktop computer that I have and it installs it super - no problems. Same as other program.
    6. Then I tried to play a music on the Lenovo laptop- well, it works OK.
    7. Then I decided to use ThinkVantage feature and see if any error that I might have on Windows or maybe CD drive will be shown on diagnostics. It took a while while a detail process was completed and no error's found. I also did a VIRUS Scan that is offered on ThinkVantage on Lenovo (no virus found). Then I did a system backup 11/14/2008 -  figured just in case.
    8. Well, then I thought I try again with any other installation CD - just any that might work and install something for a try on a laptop and nothing. It spins and no installation boxes, no features (most of the time it freezes the laptop).
    9. Next, I tried to restore only a program from a previous backup from 3/19/2008. I have chosen Adobe Photoshop that worked great on 3/19/2008. Nothing - does not work at all.
    10. Next on 12/05/2008 - I did a full system restore to 3/19/2008. I figured that I had nothing important on laptop that I need plus maybe I can reinstall a Wireless Netgear with a help of Netgear CD and instruction booklet. Plus it would give me a chance to test a CD/ROM if it works.
    11. Surprise! After restoration of the Windows XP to a state from 3/19/2008 I have noticed that Adobe Photoshop is on it and it works great. Does not freezes and works great. Then I have installed a few new programs that I never needed in a first place on that laptop but I figured I need to test them if they install anyway. They install with a ease. Next, I have deleted Adobe Photoshop from Add/Remove feature of Windows XP and restarted a computer. Well, Surprise again! The CD installs Adobe Photoshop with an ease - no problems. Boxes for registration copy come on. Completes the process - fully installed. I have shut down and restarted a computer to be sure that it works - open's up, loads and I can use it on any picture.
    12. 12/05/2008 - I tried to reinstall my wireless internet connection. (I could connect to DSL internet with a cable). I placed a CD follow the prompts. I kept the same names on the network I had before since I figured it is less confusion. Well, it was a pain. It was late then anyway plus I know that Netgear gives you 3 months of any support for free once you buy a product and after that you have to pay per accident.
    13. 12/07/2008 - I was so tired with trying to work that Netgear so I have restored the system to 11/14/2008 state from my C: backup. I was curious that maybe I can look at some network features and see what I have been doing wrong.
    14. 12/07/2008 - I came back to the same state. Internet works, Outlook Express works but Adobe Photoshop is gone since I deleted it on 11/14/2008. I think if it was on it it would freezes anyway. Again, I try to install a CD - any CD and nothing.
Sorry that this is a bit confusing but I tough that at least I can show a process what I exactly did. My question is - is there any feature on Windows XP that prevents from installing a software? Did maybe the virus caused to block it?
I have also tried to look under Drive DVD/CD-RW /Properties to see if I have enabled or disabled any recording features. It says the device is working properly.
I have checked a C: Drive properties to see if anything is checked disabled - nothing that I could not find .
Honestly, this is a first time that I could not figured out what is wrong. I am not so technical in terms of networks but I use computers a lot and I can set basic features and use many graphic programs.
If anyone can offer me some suggestions I really appreciate. If I can fix that I would have to restore to 3/19/2008 because the CD/ROM was installing then and maybe call Wireless Netgear people so they can walk me through again and pay them the fee.
    Thanks.

  • Annoyed by OTN username and password prompting

Sorry it's really starting to annoy me that I always have to enter my OTN username and password between every browser session. Why can it not use a cockie or whatever to keep me logged in at least for the day. Or better, let me save the password in my keychain so that I only have to press the "Sign In" button when the login appears.
Firefox has a built in "save password" option, which will supply username and password when accessing a particular web page. It works with sites like ebay and many other common sites, but for some reason it does not work with OTN. When accessing OTN it never prompts me if I want Firefox to remember the password. I'm not using private browsing and have no site in the save password exception list.
I found an add-on named "Saved Password Editor". It allows to manually add username and password entries associated with a web site. But since almost any software calls home today I rather not use any 3rd party tool to deal with security sensitive information. I checked the tool and it did not call home, but who knows what happens later.
    Any other ideas?
FWIW: firefox - How does browser know when to prompt user to save password? - Stack Overflow
Maybe the problem is simply because the login uses "ossusername" instead of "username" in the login form.

So what is the message? I have no particular objection to any solution that fixes the issue, beside installing 3rd party browser extensions.
How about the following? Checking https://login.oracle.com/mysso/signon.jsp on http://web-sniffer.net  shows:
    Set-Cookie:    ORA_UCM_VER=; domain=.oracle.com; expires=Thu, 01-Jan-1970 01:00:00 GMT; path=/
Unfortunately I cannot set my system date prior to 1970 to see what happens, but would the cookie allow me to login without the need to specify my username and password again until the cookie expires? Would that be a feasible option instead of enabling form autocomplete?
Speaking of which, the OTN forum defines "Cache-Control: private, no-cache, no-store, must-revalidate". This setting disables browser caching. I found the browser's back button very useful in the past to be able to get back the content of the forum editor, for instance, when some error occurred submitting the response or when I accidentally opened another web page. This used to work in the previous forum.
The editor's new recovery function so far has been rather confusing or completely useless for me. It does not help after being logged out without notice. It actually just happened and I received an "unexpected error" while posting this response, loosing all text. (Un)fortunately I'm used to either copy and paste the content before submitting or use my own text editor. But cutting and pasting has become a different story now after the forum upgrade with the buggy editor.
Meanwhile I understand that OTN cannot fix the problems with the forum software, but perhaps the login could be improved.
