No sound from iChat

I have no sound coming from iChat. No sound when I sign on, get IMed, send a message or anything. I've already checked the settings and there all checked to make sound. And no my computer isn't muted. What's going on here?
--Thanks

Ben, your link does not seem to work for me.
Also, I have been experiencing this same problem concerning system alert sounds. While music plays, I am unable to hear sounds from iChat, mail, or system sounds like folder movements or the trashcan. I can hear music and other audio files as well as alert sounds from iChat in the alert menu.
So far I have done the following in this order:
Checked the iChat preferences and turned off and back on all the alert sounds.
Checked the Sound preferences and turned the alert sounds volume to maximum.
Quit and restarted iChat more than once.
Killed coreaudiod in Terminal using "sudo kill 35" after getting the process number form the activity monitor.
NONE of these have been successful. Furthermore, after killing coreaudio, when I rebooted a small square with an earth in it blinked on my screen for a fairly long duration (30, 45 seconds?) before the normal startup processes began. I can see coreaudio running again in the Activity Monitor. I just tried force quitting it through the Activity Monitor, but my sounds are still missing.
Is there another solution for me to try? And what about this blinking globe? I am hesitant to try further UNIX commands for fear of not knowing how to undo my actions. I am about to reboot a second time to see if the globe occurs again, and I will update. Any new advice would be welcomed.

  • No sound from Mail or iChat after 10.4.4?

So I think the 10.4.4 update broke sound output from Mail and iChat. iTunes works, Adium works, anything else that plays sounds works, except Mail and iChat. Strange thing is, I can go into Mail and change the new mail sound and as I click through the sounds from the menu, I can hear them play, but I don't hear the sound when I receive a new message! Same with iChat; I can change the sounds in the preferences and actually hear them, but they don't play when the application events are supposed to trigger those sounds.
BTW: This is using internal speakers only.. I don't have external speakers.
    Anyone have any ideas?
I tried to search but I didn't come up with anything definitive.

If I use google it works. If I use Ichat, it works. If I use skype it works.

This sounds like something similar to https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3388112?start=105&tstart=0.
Try turning down the speak volume (System Preferences->Sound->Output->Output Volume)  or the microphone gain (System Preferences->Sound->Input->Input Volume). Do this on both sides of the call.

  • Since me and my mother moved from iChat to iMessage bêta, screen sharing works only one way. I can share my screen with her but not the reverse. When actually what I would like to do is share her screen. Video works fine both ways.

Screensharing works only one way since we moved from iChat to iMessage bêta. Before that we have never had any problem with screen sharing. We haven't changed anything else, just installed iMessage. What I need to do is share her screen, and the only thing I can do is share my screen...
    Thanks for your help.

    HI,
On the whole I am finding it very stable.  (it presents the same quirks in the same manner each time)
It has some things that are more Feature requests than "Bugs" per se about the way it works that I would like to change.
It can also be difficult to tell exactly what is going on whenyou are hearing about it third hand.
Sounds like you have a plan.

  • Problems with microphone sound in iChat

    Hello Ralph,
(I already thought I sent this but I didn't see it as a new topic, so I am trying again). I'm new to this discussion thing, it's my first time so I hope I've submitted this correctly.
I have similar, but extended and more complicated problems with "microphone sound in iChat". (Sorry, this email is a bit lenghty becuase I have already done a lot of my homework on trouble shooting this.)
I began by using iChat with a high impedance microphone (from an old 1970'scassette player) PLUGGED DIERCTLY IN THE THE MICROPHONE INPUT on the back of my G4 tower. (I DO NOT have a video camera). My Mom in Canada can hear me okay on it, only if I "eat" the microphone. (My Mom DOES have a video camera).
SO I BOUGHT AN iMic. I also bought a new condenser mic to go with my new iMic. I plugged iMic in and adjusted the sound preferences selection. I switched the iMic to "Mic". It did not work. The old cassette mic did not work at all with iMic either. My Mom could not hear me, and my "VU METER bar levels" on my iChat were not registering. (If I plug the condenser mic directly into the tower, Mom can hear me only if I "eat" the condenser microphone).
Next, with iMic, I wanted to try my Shure 58 microphone instead. My friend (who is an audio tech) made me a 1/8" to XLR (sheilded) cable. I made sure I had adjusted the sound preferences and switched the iMic to "Mic". The Shure 58 did not work with iMic. It also did not work plugging directly into the tower.
Next, with iMic, I wanted to try my "Plantronics telephone headset". My friend (the audio tech) then made me a 1/8"male to 1/8"mini feamle (sheilded) cable. My headset did not work with iMic. It also did not work plugging directly into the tower.
My friend, the audio tech, then made me second cable 1/8"male to 1/8"female (sheilded) cable. This cable I had him make 50 feet long so I could move to other areas in my home while audio chatting - so I don't have to be trapped in my office while talking. We ran the cable from iMic to the Old cassette mic and the new condenser mic. They did not work with iMic.
We also tried plugging the new 50ft cable directly into the back of the G4 Tower and it worked with the old cassette mic and the new condenser mic, BUT the volume was reduced and there was a loud baseball game being broadcast through the cable - according to my Mom. I could not hear anything from my end - not my own voice and not the baseball game! IS THERE A WAY FOR ME TO MONITOR (actually hear) THE SOUND THAT SHOULD BE COMING THROUGH THE MIC?
I have tried to trouble shoot these issues on line, but can't seem to find the right solutions. In one of your discussions I read that you suggested to select the iChat preference for Video and select microphone. I CANNOT SEE THE FULL WINDOW UNDER iChat Video Preferences!!!! All I can see is the top half of a large empty box that says "There is no camera attached to this computer". (That's because I have no camera, but I DO HAVE a microphone).
I also found some support about adjusting microphone levels using iMovie. I do not have iMovie on my Mac.
Yes, I have already adjusted the AUDIO MIDI SETUP settings.
My audio tech friend and I are both baffled. iMic is useless to me so far - perhaps you can help to get me up and chatting properly? Do I really need iMovie and/or a video camera to fix this???
BY THE WAY: When I plug my external speakers into iMic and select iMic in preferences for output, my speakers and sound is very inferior to the using the speaker terminal on my tower. i Mic is supposed to better???????
Thanking you for your help in advance,
    Marlene

    Hi Ralph,
    A funny thing just happened...
The iChat prefernce window for "VIDEO" finally opened (!!) all the way, so for the FIRST TIME EVER and I was able to see the microphone setting at the bottom of the window. (Because I have NO CAMERA, the window would never fully open before during the 100 or so times I tried to get it to open before. This must've been a fluke because now it won't fully open again).
While it was open I set the microphone setting to iMic, plugged my condenser mic into iMic and IT WORKED. Then I tried the long (baseball game) extension cord in the iMic (attached to the condenser mic) and IT WORKED TOO - with NO BASEBALL GAME!
I still have to have the condenser mic right up to my mouth, which shouldn't be - but considering I have spent a few weeks trying to troubleshoot this, "eating the mic" is only a minor annoyance at this point.
I just plugged my speakers into iMic and THEY WORK GREAT!
SO ALL MY PROBLEMS WERE BECAUSE: I could not set the microphone under Video in iChat preferences because the VIDEO PREFERENCE WINDOW DOES NOT FULLY OPEN WITHOUT A CAMERA ATTACHED. If it hadn't opened by fluke my iMic would still not be working.
I guess I'm all set now. Unless you have a suggestion why the condenser mic isn't picking up my voice from other than right by my mouth? It should be able to be a foot or two away at least.
    Thanks Ralph,
    Marlene
(By the way, I never did trash the com.apple.ichat.plist)

  • No sound from TV when using HDMI from HP Envy Ultrabook4 despite downloading drivers

Problem: When using an HDMI cord from my HP Envy Touchsmart Ultrabook 4 (4-1105dx)to connect to my TV to view movies, the video appears on my TV screen, but there is NO sound from the TV. Instead the sound comes from my lap top.
Troubleshooting: I have looked under Sounds in the Control Panel, but the only choice listed is Speakers & Headphones IDT High Definition (which is the default) and does not allow sound from the TV when using the HDMI. I have also tried to download Driver and Audio Graphics, but wasn't sure which one & the ones which were downloaded have not solved the problem.
Can you assist me? Which is the correct Audio/Graphic Driver to download? Or is there another possible reason why I cannot hear sound from my TV when using the HDMI to connect to my lap top?

    Hi,
Please try this first to enable Speakers in Playback devices as follows:
    1. Right click speaker icon (bottom right hand corner)
    2. Select Playback devices
    3. Right click HDMI sound
    4. Enable it
    5. Click Apply/Ok
    Regards.

  • No output sound from output port/analog audio: Need help

hello, I want to connect my analog audio equipment to my iMac. I have done this in the past with my old G3. I have connected the RCA cables to a 3.5 mm jack and put it into the audio input port, which was what worked on the G3. When I open the sound page for input & output, on Output I can see the volume bar thing moving in relation to the sounds from mic, turntable, etc: all the analog audio things. However, there is no actual output of sound through the iMac;s speakers or a headphone. The output page is pretty simple so I am real sure I have all the rigt things checked, unchecked etc. Any ideas? Thanks.

I had what sounds like a similar problem to jazzzrat. i had my macbook setup to a stereo and it worked for over a year. suddenly no sound came out of the stereo. in my case, it definitely was a software setup thing.
plug in your stereo jack into the audio out port. then go to system preferences-->sound-->output. on there you should see, under "device for sound output": Name=Headphones, port=built-in output. (if you see name=built in speakers, you plugged in the wrong plug). Now go down to the bottom of the window and UNcheck the "mute" box, and make sure the volume slider is midway or more.
For some reason, mac allows you to mute the "headphones" and "built in speakers" selectively. we have no idea how that box got checked, that remains a complete mystery. but when we eventually found -- and unchecked -- the box, our stereo output came back just fine.
i hope this works for you. good luck and have a good new year.

  • What do I need to get better sound from my Mac mini

The sound from my external speakers is very poor. I am hard of hearing(50% in one ear) and I find it very difficult to follow a conversation etc.
I am now on Yosemite, and the speakers have been used on all my previous  pc's successfully. I cannot find a control for the built-in audio, does one exist?

What do you mean by poor sound?
The Sound is controlled by System Preferences>Sounds>Output

Supports multi-channel digital audio output on compatible devices
make sure your ipad is not muted
make sure you volume is not all the way down
make sure audio play out of the ipad when not connected to the hdmi adapter
if you did and it don't work then it's likely an issue with the connetor
or the tv or it's settings

  • No sound from optical output when using hdmi/dvi cable

I am trying to connect my apple tv2 to my B&O Beovision 7. I have used an HDMI to DVI cable which is working fine for the picture; but obviously DVI does not carry sound. I have therefore connected an optical cable to the digital optical output on the apple TV and put this through a converter to digital coax, which then goes in to the TV. I know the optical cable / converter set up works fine as I have tested it on my sky box and it works fine. But I get no sound from the apple TV - any ideas?

I hav exactly the same problem... Did you resolve this??

  • No sound from the TV when using HDMI cable, No sound from the TV when using HDMI cable

I recently purchased HDMI cable and adaptor, so that I can play downloads from my Macbook Air on my TV. There is only sound from the Macbook, not the TV - Do I need as separate cable for sound?

I've got the same issue: when I connect my Macbook Air (2011) to TV via HDMI cable there's no sound through the TV system, only from the Macbook Air. I used to use my older Macbook Pro with the same HDMI adapter and it worked just fine, but not with the Macbook Air it doesn't.
My software is up to date. I tried to select the TV as an output option in sound preferences, but it doesn't yield any results.
Rebooding multiple times doesn't help either.
Any suggestions on how to tackle this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Recording sound from DVD and CD play

I just bought a Zen V Plus. Could someone please tell me how to record sound from a DVD and/or CD to my MP3? Thank you!

    Try this:
    1. Connect the Line IN jack on your player to the line output of an external stereo source, such as a CD or MiniDisc player, using the supplied line-in cable.
    2. Press the Back/Options .You may need to do this more than once until the main menu appears.
    3. Select Extra button to start a line-in encoding.
    5. On your external stereo source, start playing the song you want to encode.
    6. While encoding, you can press and hold the Back/Options button and select one of the following items:
Pauses the encoding. You can also pause the encoding by pressing the Play/Pause button.
Stops and saves the encoding. You can also stop the encoding by pressing the Record
Split Ends and saves current recording session, and begins a new one.
    7. Press the Record button to end the line-in recording. The recorded track is named LINE followed by the date and time of the recordin YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS<. For example, if you record a track on March 5, 2004 at 2:57 pm, the track is named LINE
This information can also be found in your user's guide, it's a .chm file found in your installation cd.

    Sounds like Notifications app.
Maybe some other app. In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems tab: remove all entries with the minus sign underneath. This will not uninstall anything, you have to start those apps by hand now. Restart.
    Still there?
Yes: Restart again while holding the shift key, this will start the mac in SafeMode: only the necessary items are loaded to run.
