No sound output after 10.5.2 & Graphics Update

Installed 10.5.2 and the graphics update last night. Today, come home after work. Startup the computer, and sound is playing from the internal speakers, rather than my externals which I've had for years (and worked fine yesterday). When I go to the Sound Prefs, all that shows is the built-in speakers. Have tried external speakers, headphones - doesn't see either.
Anyone have any advice, having the same issue?

  • No sound output after wake up in OS X Mavericks

Hi, When I wake up my 13" macbook air (mid-2013 model) after few hours of sleep I am finding that
there is no audio output, so I have to restart everytime, which is quite annoying.
I know there was a similar issue for some people (not me tho) in 10.8.5 but it got corrected from an update (If I'm not mistaken).
I am experiencing this in the latest OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
I really really hope there is a solution to this other than way for apple to release an update
    Thank you!

try the thing with ther kext  as seen on page 3 of this thread i guess from 10.8.5! That REALLY  solved my issue! MBA2013

Here how i have replace the AppleHDA.kext driver on my MacBookAir 13" (2013):
    sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext.disabled sudo cp -pr AppleHDA.10.8.5.kext /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext sudo touch  /System/Library/Extensions
    Then reboot
Here the link to AppleHDA driver of Mountain Lion 10.8.5:https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/112112/AppleHDA.10.8.5.kext.zip

  • Diminished sound output after traveling abroad...

My laptop was with me the whole time so I know it did not take direct damage, but once I arrived I've found that my speakers are simply much quieter than before. The sound will still increase as I use the add volume button but it doesn't get very loud, and the speakers sound like they've been blown. This is without mentioning that the first day I bought it I turned my output down a notch to prevent just that. What could be the cause of this and how do I fix it? I need to use them to practice my trumpet.

    Try a PRAM reset:

Is it the same with earphones?

  • Windows 7 Start-Up Sound deleted after Boot Camp 3.2 Update

    Hello,
i´ve installed Windows 7 on my MacBook. Than i have updated my Boot Camp Software from 3.0 to 3.2.
Now is my Start-Up Sound deleted.
    How can i repair this?

Install the audio driver from the vendor, does it use Cirrius? or RealTek? you need to install an audio driver or package, Boot Camp just provides hardware device so it can be installed later by the end user.
My Mac Pro uses Realtek and easy enough to install, though I've read here that people had trouble on Macs that require Cirrius. But it is up to you.

  • Display problems after installing 10.5.2 and the leopard graphics update

Shortly after installing the leopard graphics update, my display started exhibiting problems.
The next day, the powerbook wouldn't even boot, just leaving me at a blue screen.
I tried verifying permissions and verifying disk, reinstalling leopard and eventually did a fresh install of Tiger, which boots, but crashes frequently and has graphics corruption as visible in this screenshot:
    http://pics.livejournal.com/dorukai/pic/000fw0hw
The same corruption is visible on a second monitor if I connect one.
The timing (being right after installing the graphics update) suggests that the update somehow caused this problem (flashing the video card firmware maybe?) but any ideas at all are very welcome at this point!
Unfortunately after installing Tiger I kept getting updates, and one has broken the ability to boot normally, I can only boot in safe mode

I have the same problem. It happened right after I installed the graphics update. When the computer restarted, my screen went crazy. I couldn't see anything, just a screen full of horizontal lines. After restarting a couple of times it seemed to go away, but it has begun to happen again recently. although not as bad yet. I am not saying it's not a logic board issue, but it does seem funny that more than one person is experiencing the same type of problem after the graphics update. I guess it's time to take a trip to the apple store.

  • Desktop Background after graphics update

  • New Graphics update - Restart after installation takes forever

After installing the latest graphics update, it started to reboot, but gets stuck at the blue restart screen with the spinning wheel. I had to power the MacBook off manually to get it to restart. Any one got such an glitch with the new update. I read that this update seems glitchy on some Macs.

For some reason the update hung up. Reinstall and see if that goes smoothly. BTW, you read wrongly. See http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20013892-263.html?tag=mncol;title
BTW, According to the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4286 article about the update, the products affected are:
MacBook (13-inch, Early 2009), MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010), MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010), MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010), iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009), Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac mini (Early 2009), Mac OS X 10.6.4, Mac mini (Mid 2010), iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010), iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010), MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010), Portal, StarCraft II, Team Fortress 2

  • 10.5.2 - Graphics Update and 12" PowerBook

Since upgrading to 10.5.2 I've found that after installing the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 and attempting to play a DVD movie with DVD Player the computer crashes and the only way to recover is to use the power button to force a restart. DVDs can mount on the desktop and play in VLC, but any attempt to open DVD player causes this freeze to occur. On reboot a few times I have lost the ability to play music through the 12" via either speakers or the headphone socket (yet airtunes still works). Lots of other 12" users seem to be reporting the same issue. My MacPro and MacBook Pro seem fine after the updates. Apple needs to pull the Graphics update before more users are caught out.

  • Digital sound output only after using Headphones

    i used my MacbookPro 17 2.66
with headphones to listen to music and after i removed headphones there is a red light in the headphone port and only digital sound output option in system preferences control panel
If i reinsert headphones, headphone output reappears
Where are my internal speaker option gone
i have a time machine backup
Can i just replace sound preferences
    Thanks

Generally that means your headphones' plug is not exactly to dimensional stands and has jammed the internal connector in the jack to the "mute" position. The plug's tip-to-shoulder distance seems to be the variable.
I've found with my MBP that, with non-standard plugs, inserting them only until they function--not until the "stop shoulder" hits the MBP case--prevents this. I have an old and cheap set of external speakers whose plug works perfectly. A patch cable I use to connect to my desktop sound system has a non-standard plug, and I have to leave the plug slightly out of the jack to prevent the problem you see. Again, insert until you hear proper sound to the device, not by feel. I've no problems with the plugs falling out using this technique.
The "official" fix is a new logic board but most people are able to free the internal contact by inserting a plus into the jack and gently wiggling it in the horizontal plane. One person recently said he freed his with a wooden toothpick.
If you use anything other than a standard plug to manipulate the jack, be certain it's non-conductive. BTW, if you use the "Search Discussion" option in the upper right of this page and search for "red light" (use the quotes) you will see a number of threads here on the subject.

  • Why do my sound output settings keep resetting after restart?

Just bought a MBPro with OS 10.6.4.
After restarting my sound output settings keep resetting to Soundflower (2ch) from Internal speakers.
It doesn't take too much to change it, but it is pretty annoying and I'm assuming there's some obscure setting that can fix this.
    Anyone able to help?

This fixed it on my Mac Pro. It might work on a MacBook Pro.
    Delete these three files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist
    /Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
    /Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Reselect whatever sound device you want as your default in the Sound Preference Pane.
    Restart the computer.

  • After upgrading to iOS 5.1, the sound output works abnormally.

After upgrading to iOS 5.1, the sound output (the 3.5mm output) works correctly only when Apple provided headphones or certain headphones are plugged in. Others cause the iPod to produce sort of phased out sound with lots of digital, low-quality sounding artifacts. Other headphones have no problems since they work fine when plugged into my MacBook.
    Anyone having similar problems? Solutions?

Could be due to a defective headhone jack in the iPod that just coinsided with the iOS update.
However, to rule out a software cause, try the following.
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • No sound via digital output after reinstallation of snow leopard

    Hi,
I use my mac mini as Media Center using the XBMC.org for the last year.
yesterday, I decided to reinstall the Mac Mini, and to organize everything I have there. I erase the HDD and install the 10.6.2 retail DVD and upgrade to 10.6.4
After everything done successfully, I realize that there is no sound via the Digital I/O which works great before that process. I tried this issue with several software and even in the prefs, the only audio device is the 'Internal Speakers'
    Any idea?
    Thanks,
    Tomer

For DVD Output you need to set DVD Player to stream to digital audio, look here:
DVD Player -> Preferences -> Disk Setup | Audio - Audio Output
I assume you have selected "Digital Out" in:
System Preferences -> Sound - Output

  • System Sound Output Level Reset After Reboot ?

Whenever my iMac Core Duo is rebooted, system sound output level always get reset to value 0.56 (-24dB) as shown in utility "/Applications/Utilities/Audio Midi Setup". I have to increase the system sound output level to desired value of 0.75(-12.75dB) to match with built-in amplifier of Altec Lansing FX6021 speaker system. The desired setting lasts until next reboot. Is there any way I can fix the system sound output level at desired level between reboots ? Why I have to be involved in such constant struggle with the iMac for such simple audio configuration ?
Audio Hijack Pro 2.6.7 wihtout Soundflower 1.1 virtual audio device has been installed. Audio hijack function of this utility has not been used at all. Thank you for any pointer.

Thanks for the confirmation that my iMac is not an isolated case. In case you are not willing to use Audio Hijack Pro, just use Automator to create an Automator script to set system volume (In Automator's Library plane: Applications>System>Set System Volume) and save it as application. Set this application as Login Items for your account through following menu path:
System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items. Whenever you login with this account, the script will be invoked automatically by Mac OS X and sound levels for output, input and alert will be set to user preferred levels. For older versions of Mac OS X (10.3.9 and earlier) without Automator, same effect can be achieved with Apple Script, use Apple Script Editor instead of Automator to create Apple Script and set it as Login Items. This workaround has been working consistently on my iMac Intel Core Duo.

  • After updating to 12.1.2.27, songs play, but without any sound output to internal iMac speakers

So i updated to 12.1.2.27 and songs 'play', but without any sound output. Checked my audio settings and had it at Internal speakers. Checked the speakers (they work, at least for YouTube vids), restarted machine, etc and no audio output from iTunes. Any suggestions? Am I missing something?
    Thanks in advance

Try unchecking Sound Enhancer and Sound Check in your Preferences under Playback
Sound check may have reduced everything to a low output level inadvertently.

  • G4 AFP Graphics has not sound output port

Greetings, I bought an apple G4 only to later notice that I have no sound output port. I also get no sound whatsoever on my computer speaker. Is there anything I can do?

    Hi, Adrian -
The G4 (AGP) models have two sound-related ports on the back, immediately under the pair of USB ports - the upper of the two is a sound input port, the lower of the two is a sound output port.
