No transition possible :(

Hi
I'm using an avchd cam (sony full hd sr11) and when i transfer my files, put them in the timeline everything is working fine BUT it's impossible to put a transition (dissolve) between clips (even long ones) all I get is this cross.
I've been checking some tutorials but couldn't find the solution.
I've tried to make it work with regular .avi files and there I can put those transitions but I can't seem to get it work with my avchd transfered files.
Is it a setting I missed somewhere ?
Thx

hi
thx for your answer, I don't really understand what "handles" is but I understood I had to cut at least 1 frame at the beginning and 1 frame at the end of each clip to be able to add the transition and it works now so thank you

  • Changing Default Transition Possible in FCExpress 2?

Does anybody know of a way to change the default video transition being something other than "Cross-Dissolve 1 sec"?
"Set Default Transition" may be a Right-Click option in FCPro, but I cannot find it anywhere in my FCE version 2.

You can set up a customised transition of your choice as a "Favorite". Not quite as convenient as a "default" but it should help a little.

  • Problem with "transitions" in PS Elements 9

I am a long time Roxio user, but recently purchased PS Elements 9. I find some things vastly superior, while other things seem to be a severe step in the wrong direction. At first glance "transitions" fit into the latter category. My problem is that if I use a simple transition such as a "cross dissolve" the transition is not visible at all, even if I lengthen the duraton to a lengthy 10 seconds. I'm hoping that the problem is simply  that I am new to PSE and that I am not doing somthing correctly. BTW, if I use a transition such as a page turn, it works fine, which only makes the invisibility of the dissolve all the more puzzling.

The A-B Roll editing was the only way to do it, back in the days of film. One created one reel, with the footage alternating between segments of black leader. The second reel was created with black leader in the places where the A Roll had footage, and footage, where the A-Roll had black leader. The footage overlapped by 1/2 of the desired Duration of the Transition - Cross-Dissolve, and both the A-Roll and the B-Roll were printed onto a single reel of film by the lab. The editor had to account for the Handles, or the Cross-Dissolve did not work in the print.
There were basically 3 Transitions possible: the Butt-Cut, Fade-to-Black (which in Video is most often called Dip-to-Black), and the Cross-Dissolve. The first was just what it sounds like, and the Tail of one Clip was butted to the Head of the next. The junction was either glued, or taped into place. The Fade-to-Black could be done in the lab, or with either the shutter, or the iris in camera. The latter was done primarily in the lab, though I had one camera that allowed for a Cross-Dissolve, by rewinding the last footage by a number of Frames, and then with the adjustment of the shutter angle, a Cross-Dissolve was created. One had to count carefully, or that Transition would be lop-sided, and not look good and smooth. Basically, this was a controlled double-exposure, created in-camera.
With Video editing, things improved, and if a switcher was placed between the source video tape machine, and the destination tape machine, more could be done. When NLE's were developed, the A-B Roll layout came along. It was not until several generations later, that single-Track editing became available. For anyone with a film background, the concept of Handles was easy to comprehend, as they had worked with them, in that overlap. Users, new to editing, however, found Handles a very abstract concept.
I still do a lot of A-B Roll layouts, just like Ted's example, but usually with animated Titles, and PiP compositions.
Even though I have many hundreds of available Transitions, I still rely almost exclusively on "the Big 3" - Butt-Cut, Dip-to-Black and Cross-Dissolve. Before I would use any other, I would need for it to enhance my "story." I even use the Big-3 to tell part of the story, and each has its place. The audience's concepts of time and place can be enhanced and expanded by their use and by their attributes, such as Duration. I know that this is getting into the realm of "story telling," and gets beyond the mechanics of a Transition.
    Good luck,

  • Limit to length of transition?

    hey guys!!
i am loving FCPX, very very nice bit of software but one thing is baffling me, when i try to insert a transition between 2 clips, it wont drop in???
now the clips i am editing are very short, sharp and sweet, so is this the reason please? i tried changing the duration of the transition but only lets me change it a little!
so is this because my actual clip will be shorter than the actual length of the transition does anyone know please?

    Bad Monk wrote:
... you are telling me to shorten them more and it will work???
    have a look:
#1) no transition possible! you can NOT drop a few-frames dissolve onto these two 10secs clips.
#1b) go with your cursor to the very end of clip#1 - the border switches to red - END.
#2) have a look in the Event: clip#1 is selected from THE VERY END of a bigger clip - so, there's no 'beef' for any transition
    #3) Maaagic - a 20f-dissolve ... how come?
#4) now, clip#1 is a selection which offers a few frames BEHIND it ...
this frames are needed for the transition, because FCPX doesn't shorten clips as e.g. iMovie does, it keeps the timeline
    hint for future projects:
let the camera run .... and run ... and run ....

  • Hi, I'd like to uninstall this awful OS and go back to Tiger.

Right. I can't stand snow leopard. It's an awful OS. It dwindles in comparison. And I want it GONE! It's completely screwed up very thing from Photoshop, to screen savers.
And the worst thing? Quick Time.
xI paid out for Quick Time pro back when I first got my mac book pro. And it was great. I edits in a blink of an eye when I needed some easy and basic, now I've got to piddle around with iMovie. I don't have time to do that, time is not a luxury I have at work.
So somebody please tell me how to get rid of this crap, and go back to the great Tiger OS. Cheers

    Kurt Lang wrote:
Almost without fail, those who seem to have the most trouble with a new OS are those who install over their existing OS instead of erasing the drive and starting from scratch.
I disagree with this very broad statement, at least as it applies to Snow Leopard. The Snow Leopard installer has very little in common with the installers for previous OS versions. For one thing, it never just upgrades selected OS files so the "over their existing OS" phrase doesn't apply in any relevant way. For another, the Snow Leopard installer is designed to install by default only what is needed, based on what is on the target volume, instead of all the extra junk the old installers always did. It even uses the existing OS's network settings to 'phone home' to update its list of incompatible software before installing anything, runs the equivalent of Disk Utility's verify disk check before writing anything to the drive, & more.
Everybody out there has to rewrite their software to either behave properly as 32-bit software it already was, or rewrite it to 64-bit.
Nonsense. I've got lots of old software that hasn't seen any development in years, & it runs perfectly well with Snow Leopard. What doesn't is mostly software that bypasses Apple's recommended API's in favor of some proprietary approach, system level stuff like peripheral drivers that typically have to be rewritten for every major OS upgrade (including for Windows), & just plain badly written software.
I just installed the CS5 Design Premium Suite and realized I can't use any of the the third party plugins I heavily rely on unless I force Photoshop to run in 32-bit mode.
Question: Is Photoshop actually running any slower in 32 bit mode on Snow Leopard than it did on Leopard?
It's been said often in many forums, but here it is again. If you rely on your computer for a living, why on Earth are you jumping right into a new OS without testing it first?
This much I agree with 100%, & even extend it to casual users who just want the smoothest transition possible. That said, it was a much smoother transition for me going from 10.5 to 10.6 than from 10.4 to 10.5 & my Intel Macs are quite noticeably faster running Snow Leopard than Leopard.

  • Text in imovie?

Sorry, I'm a bit of a newbie to imovie. Could anyone tell me if there is a way of adding text to a photo?
Bascially I have a series of photos in imovie, and I want to show the picture & then have some text at the bottom - but the text is indivdual for each slide. I have tried going in to titles & adding subtitles & on the preview, I do indeed get the photo & the text over the top. When i either click on the tick - next to the preview, or click on the "add" button, all i get is a new slide with the subtitles & then the picture (if i click on the tick it seems to change the picture duration to 2 seconds - almost like it's trying to fit the text & picture to the same duration as the picture was before I added the text. I have unclicked the "Over Black" box BTW.
I could add the text to the picture, but this will take a lot of time & I will have to have 2 pictures - one without the text & one with.
Any ideas - even if someone can recommend a different prog it would be a help.
    Best regards & thanks.
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I can see when it renders at the very bottom in the clip viewer that the picture is there, but as soon as it finishes it splits the clip in two (between the 2 clips it has the overall duration - so if the clip was 5 seconds & I've set the subitle to 3 seconds, then it splits the first clip to 3 seconds & the second to 2 seconds
Yes, splitting the clip (photo) so that one part has the title and one doesn't is how titling works, so that part is working correctly.
However no matter what I do the first clip is black with the text This part is NOT working properly. You should get the title over the photo, not over black.
    I can address two things:
    1. Delete iMovie's preference file. Located in Home/Yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iphoto.plist.
With iMovie closed, trash this plist file. iMovie will create a new one when you reopen it.
    2. Have you emptied iMovie's trash since you have created this movie? There is a bug in iMovie 6 that causes problems with clips that have been imported with Ken Burns effect. If you try to change them, the clips turn black, usually when you try to change their duration or add transitions---possibly the same problem with adding titles. The only work-around is to reimport the photos and never empty the trash.
Some have found that the problem persists even with the newly imported photos, and have had to start over with a new iMovie.
If you emptied iMovie's trash, that could be the problem.

  • VISION IMPULZ LUTs with FS7

Hi everybody, I recently purchased Visuals Impulz Lut Collection - it offers a great variety of LUTs for negative/linear/directprint grading. I didnt check other footage yet, just FS7 XAVC-I 1920x1080 25p and 23.98p , both Slog2 and Slog3 in CINE EI. What I found with SGamut3.cine/Slog3 was heavy banding-steps (32??)  when using darker/high contrast film LUTs - both in the camera and when used in Resolve or Catalyst (yes, you can put external LUTs into Browse/Prepare). Today I wanted to see if Slog2 is better , here are my results: SGamut/Slog2, no Lut:  To see if it behaves strange, I put on some Sony LUTs: with 1D LUT709(800):  with Look Profile Cine+709:  with 3D User LUT Visual Impulz Techtacrome FPE (Slog2-Techtacrome FPE Cube):  with 3D User LUT Visual Impulz Techtacrome FPE + raised EI/ISO-Slider:  when I move the Exposure Slider up and down, the pic goes brighter and darker, but the "grid" stays on its position. Obviously the slider moves the brightness BEFORE the LUT conversion.Playing with Lift Gamma Gain the "grid" moves accordingly up and down. Testing the same footage in resolve brings same results (but the Waveform Monitor doesnt show it the same obvious way). When I first convert Slog to REC709 (via NODE1) and bring in the Impulz LUT AFTER that (REC709-Techtachrome FPE), bandings are much more less obvious, but still there. I didnt expect the direct Slog-ImpulzLUT way to be THAT bad. Interestingly other LUTs (Alisters Film Look for example) show not nearly  heavy bandings.  What I want to find out is  a) do I expect to much out of 10bit Slog when used with extreme 3D LUTs? b) is there a problem with the Vision Impulz LUTs? c) I found that the Look Profiles are 65step LUTs, 3D User Luts are 33 (exported from Resolve), Vision LUTs are 32 - does the FS7 dont like 32s? Any experiences too? ULi

Uli, I'm pretty well certain that that banding has nothing to do with how large the LUT dimension is. If anything, the lower the 3D LUT dimension, the simpler and softer the transitions possible and the less likely you are to see banding. I do wonder if it might be the software having issues with 32x32x32 rather than 33x33x33. 3D LUTs are frequently an odd number of dimensions, specifically 17x17x17, 33x33x33 or 65x65x65. One reason for this is that it makes it very easy to accurately reduce dimension without recalculating; to go from 65x65x65 to 33x33x33 you just remove intermediate values from the LUT. Likewise to go from 33x33x33 to 17x17x17 and then on to 9x9x9 if you want to go that far! As you say, Sony's cube LUTs are 33x33x33 except for Cine+709 which is 65x65x65 and the camera accepts 33x33x33 or 17x17x17. Seeing your Catalyst framegrabs and the nature and consistency of the lines on the waveform, I wonder if the hardware acceleration is tuned for the common odd-number dimensions and just throwing a wobbly at having even dimensions? You could try converting the 32x32x32 Sony one to a 33x33x33 one (or 65x65x65) with the LUTAnalyst tool in LUTCalc as Alister mentioned - or equally convert the Arri 64x64x64 one to S-Log3/S-Gamut3.cine. It might be worth a try rather than saving from Resolve as LUTAnalyst has been specifically designed for making conversions. If you convert the Arri ones, just make sure that you set the 'Camera' in the top left box to 'Arri Alexa / Amira'. This sets the native ISO and makes sure that the LogC parameters used are correct! Keep us posted, Ben

  • Can I make a slides show with imovie(8,0,6)

Can I make a slides show with imovie (8,0,6). If so, how?

    Hi
    Yes and No
No - if Quality is important AND You want a DVD as result - no iMovie'08 to 11 can handle or export - Interlaced SD-Video to any DVD authoring program - When going from Event's to Project every second line in the Picture is lost and this will be a noticeable quality loss in the final DVD
    YES - If You don't want a DVD -
    • Just start a new Project
    • Import Photos from Media button / Photos
    • Insert transition of choice
    • Insert Audio at Your liking - I convert all to .aiff and not use any .mp3 or from iTunes directly (converted they work OK)
    If DVD - Then use
    • iMovie HD6 - or -
    • FinalCut any version
    • FotoMagico™
    • iDVD - BUT this is limited in several ways
    - max 99 photos per show
    - one transition possibly
    - audio - one audio tract (but this can be created outside iDVD to contain more than one tune
    Good Luck

  • Is it possible to create an own "transition template"

I have lots of elements that should "pop up". This means they are scaled via keyframes at 0% go to 110% after three frames and to 100% after another three frames. This basically functions as a transition because the graphics disappear the same way (just the other way around: scale 100%, 110%, 0%). Is it possible to save this as a template of some sorts? Or do I have to manually copy and paste the keyframes to every single element's beginning and end (which takes time because the length may differ)?

You can save this into presets.

  • Is it possible to apply the same transition to multiple edits all at once?

I know it's possible with FCP but is it possible with FCE? I have a bunch of edits I'd like to apply the exact same transition to but would like to avoid doign it one at a time. Unfortunately, selecting all the clips/edits and then dragging the transition to them does nothing.
    Thanks.

    Hi(Bonjour)
Humm I remember an old trick, check this workaround:
    1) Stop your playhead before the first clip, and select all your clips in timeline,
    2) drag those clips in canvas, with picture overlay,
    3) drop on "overwrite with transition".
    4) the default transition will be added between all your clips.
    5) open your favorite transition, select the whole sequence in timeline, drag the little "hand" from browser to timeline. All transitions will be replaced by your favorite.
    Good luck

  • Is it possible to increase transition time between clips in iMovie '09?

I've edited a movie and to stop it jumping so much I want to increase the time between clips so that it fades to black between clips. Is this possible?

There is a "fade to black" transition  in iMovie 09. Does that work for you?

  • I understand it is possible to have a delay of 60 s between transitions in Keynote for ipad. How do I do this?

I understand that it is possible to have a delay of 60 s (rather than the 10 s shown on the slider) between transitions on Keynote for ipad. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

    casper,
Are you looking at Keynote for the Mac or Keynote for iOS?
I see that option for the Mac but not for the iPad (that's why I didn't reply earlier, I couldn't find out how to do it either other than maybe duplicating slides and inserting delays with no transition to make it look like a longer delay (no change + delay, no change + delay, etc = long delay) ).

  • Is it possible or will it be possible for an MPR to be linked to Transitions in more than ONE Set?

    Hellos.
Can it be arranged for a single MPR to be fired if a user Transitions out of Set A *AND* Transitions into Set B.
In other words the Workflows associated with this MPR should be run *only* if user Was in Set A and is Now in Set B.
Our customer is not unusual. He uses 3 status levels: Active, Passive, Suspended.
There are then 3! possible changes. Initially they only wanted Notification (and other stuff done) when a User became Suspended or when a User no longer was suspended. This was easy. Just the one Set of Suspended people and 2 rules. Transition In and Transition
    out of it.
However, the customer now wants to be Notified when a Person leaves the Passive state and becomes Active. However, He might move Passive to Active *OR* he might move Passive to Suspended. I thought of just creating a new Set of Passive people and having
a pair of MPRs for Transition In and Transition Out of this.
But. If he moves Passive -> Suspended. I get both Workflows running, one for change from Passive and another for becoming Terminated. I *guess* FIM kicks them off at same time and they run in parallel. I am also afraid they interfere with each other.
What is best way to arrange a single Workflow to run and only run when user Leaves Set A and Joins Set B?

In this case, I would re-think states here and create only Transition In notifications:
    -> Transition In: Status: ACTIVE
    -> Transition In: Status: PASSIVE
    -> Transition In: Status: SUSPENDED
So it would not send double notification (leaving state A and entering state B). If you don't want such notification for newly created users, maybe think about request MPRs as Mark suggested? Then you can set different workflow (and notification) for each
    state changes.
If you found my post helpful, please give it a Helpful vote. If it answered your question, remember to mark it as an Answer.

  • How to parse a text on a transition with OCL? is it possible ?

    Hi Everyone,
I was just wondering if it is possible to put constraints between a transition on a state machine and a variable/attribute in a class diagram ? for example, to make sure if the user writes [X++] as a guard for a transition in state machine, the X attribute exists in the corresponding class diagram.
Is it even possible with OCL? I think maybe it should be coded to parse the text... Any idea will be appreciated
    Thanks,
    Parsa

    Hi
For OMG OCL, yes, since the capability is implied by the UML
specification. However there are gaping chasms between the UML and OCL
specifications, so any useable implementation relies on vendor intuition.
For the new pivot-based Eclipse OCL, quite possibly. The UML support is
primarily for Class Diagram elements, but is kind of extensible in so
far as for unsupported UML elements, 'self' is aligned to the nearest
containing Class. This works for statemachines, and could work for
transitions. Activity diagrams are known to not work.
