NoClassDefFoundError     , I'm new

I compiled my first .java file and I made a .class file.....but when i try to run it from the prompt i get this NoClassDefFoundError.
I saw in the FAQ that I should set CLASSPATH= , then try again, however I get the same problem.
Anyone know what I should do?

Change the cmd/command window to the directory that contains the class file.
Use this command to run it. Be sure to include the period and surrounding spaces.
java -classpath . name_of_the_class
If that works, then read about the classpath here
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/tooldocs/tools.html
The Installation Instructions for the Java package that you downloaded has detailled instructions on setting the path in paragraph #5. The same instructions apply to setting the classpath.

  • NoClassDefFound vs ClassNotFound

    It's unclear to me what the difference is between
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundErrorand
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundExceptionFrom the API, the error is described..
    thrown if the Java Virtual Machine or a ClassLoader instance tries to load in the definition of a class (as part of a normal method call or as part of creating a new instance using the new expression) and no definition of the class could be found.
    And the exception is described..
    thrown when an application tries to load in a class through its string name ... but no definition for the class with the specified name could be found.
    From these two definitions I only infer that the exception is thrown only when the application is starting and a class can not be found on the class path, and the error is thrown after the app has started and attempts to initialize an object using "new". But in my experience I have seen the error thrown as the app is starting.
    I'd like to learn more about the difference between these two. Specifically, if I make a change in my application or settings after seeing one error thrown and then I see the other error being thrown, what can I learn from that.. How do I interpret the change in settings to the differences in the errors...
    I appreciate any feedback... Thank you.

    Thank you both for your responses. I'm still a little confused though. I know that I have seen the ClassNotFoundException thrown in situations that did not involve calling the static forName() method in Class. I did think that the implementation of a static method might be the difference but as warnerja has mentioned, and as my example shows, that did not effect the outcome.
    Working with the simple program below -
    public class Hello
         public Hello()
              System.out.println("Hello World");
         // When "Greetings" is located off of the classpath
         // .. the line below generates "NoClassDefFoundError"
              Greetings greet = new Greetings();
         // Similarly when "Greetings" is located off of the classpath
         // .. the line below generates the same error - even when the
         // ... previous line using the constructor is commented out.
              Greetings.sayHi();
         public static void main(String[] args)
              Hello hi = new Hello();
    }1 - Try to instantiate using "new" w/o Greetings.class
    Result - NoClassDefFoundError: Greetings
    2 - Try to run static method in Greetings.class in Hello w/o Greetings
    Result - Same. NoClassDefFoundError...
    If I knew how to generate a ClassNotFoundException in this program..that might help me learn the difference between the two ...Can anyone tell me how I could change the code to generate a ClassNotFoundException?

    Alternatively you could see if setting the system property java.awt.headless to true is enough for you, it lets you do some graphical things that don't really need X but will result in java.awt.HeadlessException if X is needed:
    java -Djava.awt.headless=true test

    hey sudha, I thisnk changing the jdk is go too far.
    He can also change his computer.When do you want him to change the JDK? After 2 or 3 days or a week (without getting his problem solved!!!)? Changing JDK is a matter of 15 to 20 min.
    And most importantly there will not be any harm in doing so.
    If he has enough time to do an R&D on his JVM, well, he is at his liberty. I don't comment about changing the computer. Do you want him to?

  • NoClassDefFoundError: com/sap/sql/log/OpenSQLException

    I have developed a Java project. It consists of 2 SQLJ files and then a Java class. When I try to execute the Java program, I get a Java error:

    I notice a similar problem on message: Re: Which jar to include com.sap.sql.log.OpenSQLException
    Is that something that I need to maintain for it to work? Thank you.

    Hi,
    the problem one year ago was that the SQLException class was not available through remote access. I don't know if that might have been changed meanwhile in the latest release.
    I implemented a simple work around: I caught every SQL-exception in the method where it was thrown, wrapped the exception message and any nested exception in a self written exception and threw this new exception. That worked fine.

  • SAP Java Connectivity Builder -NoClassDefFoundError com.sap.aii...Reference

    Hi there,
    I'm trying to generate Java Proxies for SAPJCO using the SAP Java Connectivity Builder (JCB). I got it from the NetWeaver 6.20 Release. The tool installs and runs properly but after putting in the connection properties and klicking "next", the application hangs. When activating System output, I get the error shown below.
    I already tried to put all jar files contained in the C:\JBuilder5\lib\ext directiry into the classpath (but none of them contains the class mentioned).
    Which is the right (standalone) tool for generating Java Proxies for a standalone Java application?
    If it is JCB, is there a bug on the version I use (NetWeaver Release 6.20)?
    Any help would be apreciated.

  • NoClassDefFoundError at runtime

    Hi, everybody:
    I am a new commer to Java programming. I recently downloaded and installed the Java JDK 1.3.1 version on my Windows 98 and Windows 2000 computers without any installation problem. I wrote a very simple program and compiled from command prompt without any error. But when I ran the compiled program from command prompt, I got the following error in both Windows 98 and Windows 2000 computers:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HelloWorldApp
    Before I compiled and ran the program, I had checked the PATH and CLASSPATH system variables in the startup AUTOECEC.BAT just to make sure the system enviroment setting is correct. The program I wrote was simple enough just to include a class and main declaration that will display "Hello" on the command prompt.
    Can somebody offer any solution for this? please respond your helpful advice to

    Thanks.

    hi,
    make sure that classpath is set to your current working directory like the following :
    set CLASSPATH=.;%CLASSPATH%
    note : there is a dot after = sign and before (semicolon)

  • How can I resolve java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError?

    I am new to Java and have installed it on my Linux Ubuntu 9.04 workstation in order to learn Java. Basic Java programs work, but I am having trouble connecting to a MySQL database. I installed these packages using Synaptic Package Manager, which I thought should cover everything I need for database connectivity: 1.gsfonts-x11; 2.java-common; 3.odbcinst1debian1; 4.sun-java6-bin; 5.sun-java6-jdk; 6.sun-java6-jre; 7.unixodbc.
    After these packages were installed, I was not sure if I needed to do this, but I downloaded the MySQL connector from http://www.mysql.com/products/connector/ and installed in a directory called /home/mark/mysql/.
    I edited /etc/environment" and added a CLASSPATH to where I installed the connector:
    {code}CLASSPATH="/home/mark/mysql/mysql-connector-java-5.1.7/mysql-connector-java-5.1.7-bin.jar"
    {code}
    I created a very simple Java program based on one I found on the internet. I named the program Jdbctest to test the connection,
    {code}import java.sql.*;
    public class Jdbctest {
    public static void main(String[] args){
    System.out.println("running Jdbctest.java");
    try {
    Statement stmt;
    //Register the JDBC driver for MySQL.
    Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
    //Define URL of database server for database named mysql
    // on the localhost with the default port number 3306.
    String url = "jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/mysql";
    //Get a connection to the database for a
    // user named root with password carrot.
    // This user is the default administrator
    // having full privileges to do anything.
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(url,"root", "carrot");
    //Display URL and connection information
    System.out.println("URL: " + url);
    System.out.println("Connection: " + con);
    //Get a Statement object
    stmt = con.createStatement();
    //Select from a table
    stmt.executeQuery("SELECT host, user FROM mysql.user ");
    con.close();
    }catch( Exception e ) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    }//end catch
    }//end main
    }//end class Jdbctest{code}
    but I get this error:
    {code}Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Jdbctest
    Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: Jdbctest

         at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(ClassLoader.java:320)
    Could not find the main class: Jdbctest. Program will exit.{code}
    I don't really understand what this error message is telling me. I've Googled for an explanation, and it seems to indicate that my CLASSPATH is wrong, but I'm not sure what it should be and how to fix it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Your class JdcbTest isn't in that JAR, is it? So you need the CLASSPATH to also specify where that is. Typical CLASSPATHs start with a dot and then some jars.

  • Creating a new work item instance in a process using PAPI

    I'm seeing that there are a lot of questions on this forum about using Oracle BPM 10g's Java API called PAPI.
    I just uploaded a step by step document on how you could do this using JDeveloper 11. Here's the link to this document: http://www.4shared.com/file/126507332/e814a3a8/CallingPapi.html. The Oracle BPM project I used for this step-by-step document is also in this zip file. If you're curious, this also describes how to download, install and start JDeveloper 11.
    This is not formal Oracle documentation, but I know from teaching our Oracle BPM Bootcamp class that getting PAPI to work is sometimes a challenge and thought this might help. I tried to write it with the "Java Newbie" in mind so do not panic if you aren't an expert in Java (I'm sure not ?:| ).
    This is a simple example that uses most of the logic found in the PAPI documentation on http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13154_01/bpm/docs65/papi/index.html?t=modules/papi/c_Head_PAPI.html in the "Writing Your First Java PAPI Program" section of this document.
    The document provides a step-by-step description on how how to use PAPI to:
    <li> interface to processes running on an Oracle BPM Enterprise Engine using the same logic that is in the Oracle BPM PAPI documentation
    <li> interface to processes running on an Oracle BPM Studio Engine
    <li> list processes currently running on the Engine using the same logic that is in the Oracle BPM PAPI documentation
    <li> list the work item instances running on the Engine using the same logic that is in the Oracle BPM PAPI documentation
    <li> create a new work item instance in a process and pass in input argument variables to the new instance as it is created.
    Hope you find this useful,
    Dan

    Hi
    i have gone through your example. It gives good information how to connect to BPM engine through java papi client. I have followed exactly the same steps given in the PDF document. But it throws the exception on both java client side and BPM Suite.
    Steps followed :
    1. Import sampleproject.exp into Oracle BPM studio and start the BPM engine.
    2. Imported the fuegopapi-client.jar and Write the JAVA PIPA client to connect Oracle BPM Engine.
    complete example code:_
    import fuego.papi.CommunicationException;
    import fuego.papi.InstanceInfo;
    import fuego.papi.ProcessService;
    import fuego.papi.ProcessServiceSession;
    import fuego.papi.OperationException;
    import java.util.Properties;
    public class ProcessAPIClient {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
    /////////////////// API Initialization ///////////////////
    Properties configuration = new Properties();
    configuration.setProperty(ProcessService.DIRECTORY_ID, "default");
    configuration.setProperty(ProcessService.DIRECTORY_PROPERTIES_FILE, "directory.xml");
    configuration.setProperty(ProcessService.PROJECT_PATH, "C:\\Oracle\\OracleBPMWorkspace\\SampleProject" );
    configuration.setProperty(ProcessService.WORKING_FOLDER, "/tmp");
    try {
    ProcessService processService = ProcessService.create(configuration);
    /////////////////// Establish a session ///////////////////
    ProcessServiceSession session = processService.createSession("test", "test", null);
    /////////////////// Operate with PAPI ///////////////////
    for (String processId : session.processesGetIds()) {
    System.out.println("\n Process: " + processId);
    for (InstanceInfo instance : session.processGetInstances(processId)) {
    System.out.println(" -> " + instance.getId());
    /////////////////// Close the session ///////////////////
    session.close();
    /////////////////// Release API Resources ///////////////////
    processService.close();
    } catch (CommunicationException e) {
    System.out.println("Could not connect to Directory Service");
    e.printStackTrace();
    } catch (OperationException e) {
    System.out.println("Could not perform the requested operation");
    e.printStackTrace();
    It throws the following exception and output on java client._

  • Creating a new MdmMetadataProvider

    Hi,
    I created a MdmMetadataProvider using the following code
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
              String url="jdbc:oracle:oci8:@(description="+
    "(address=(host=hostname)(protocol=tcp)"+
    "(port=1521))(connect_data=(sid=sidname)))";
    oracle.jdbc.OracleConnection conn =(oracle.jdbc.OracleConnection) java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(url, "username", "password");
              //Creating a TransactionProvider

              //creating a DataProvider
              ExpressDataProvider dp = new ExpressDataProvider(conn,tp);
              //Creating a Metadata Provider
              MdmMetadataProvider mp = (MdmMetadataProvider)dp.getDefaultMetadataProvider();
    The code compiles with no issues, but when i try to run the .class file, it throws a runtime exception
    like

    In the javadoc there s no such class like DataDescriptor,
    even i broke down the jar and looked n to all the classes and that particular class is missing
    Even if i try to create a MdmMetadataProvider using the constructor as defined in the javadoc, the java file refuses to compile and throws an error like
    symbol : constructor MdmMetadataProvider (oracle.olapi.data.source.DataProvide

    location: class oracle.express.mdm.MdmMetadataProvider
    MdmMetadataProvider mp = new MdmMetadataProvider(dataProvider);

    where dataProvider is ExpressDataProvider
    can anyone help?

    Shobana,
    To run the code, you have to include:
    <owb home>\owb\bin\admin
    <owb home>\owb\lib\int\owb0.jar

  • Servlet + Tomcat NoClassDefFoundError

    Hi,
    I am developing a servlet which takes data from Amazon's Web services (in XML format) and then outputs a RSS feed. I use xerces for parsing the XML and then use Rome to output the RSS feed. When I run the servlet then I get the following error.
    However when I run the same code over the commandline, it runs fine, however running it as a servlet, it shows the NoClassDefFoundError . I am also sending the code , it contains the commented out System.out statements which I use when I am running it over the command line
    Thanks

    Hi,
    I am building the servlet for now in
    $TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/classes ,
    however there is no 'lib' directory in
    $TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/examples/WEB-INF . I created one
    and put the jar files there, but still I get the same
    error. Infact when I start the server, I do not see
    the jar file in CLASSPATH
    Thanks
    GauravYou shouldn't be putting your app in the examples directory.
    You should create a directory under TOMCAT_HOME/webapps for YOUR individual apps. Each one should have a WEB-INF directory under that, and /classes and /lib under that. Your web.xml belongs in the WEB-INF directory. Your .class files, and their package directories, belong under WEB-INF/classes. 3rd party JARs, like JDBC drivers, belong in WEB-INF/lib.
    The problem is that you don't know how to deploy a Web app properly on Tomcat.

  • NoClassDefFoundError:com/sap/tc/webdynpro/modelimpl/dynamicrfc/WDDynamicRFC

    Hi,
    I get a really odd exception, my scenario is as follows.
    WDJ DC "models" contains all my RFC models (1 api public part "api_pp")
    WDJ DC "delegates" contains a pure-java (no WDJ components) abstraction layer (1 api_pp, 1 ***_pp) depends on models (api_pp)
    J2EE server side library "lib/delegates" depends on delegates (***_pp)
    WDJ DC "client" uses delegates (api_pp). WDJ runtime reference towards lib/delegates (defLib).
    When I run the app in client, I get
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sap/tc/webdynpro/modelimpl/dynamicrfc/WDDynamicRFCExecuteException
        at it.sap.fsh.formazione.<Client DC name here>(GestValComp.java:387)
        at it.sap.fsh.formazione.<Client DC name here>(GestValComp.java:220)
    most likely, lib/delegates does not resolve this class.
    I have tried to declare lib/delegates dependency from tc/wd/webdynpro (default) both runtime and buildtime (also separately).
    Something weird happens: buildtime dependency does not resolve issue, runtime dep does not resolve issue AND makes the DC disappear from Visual Admin -> server -> services -> Classloader Viewer -> Libraries, where it is usually correctly listed.
    I am studying also JA340... but without luck
    Can anyone please help?
    Thanks in advance,
    Vincenzo

    Hi Vincenzo,
    I hope you have already created JCo destinations on the server for the RFCs imported in the 'models' Web Dynpro DC project.
    If there is some change in backend RFC, then you will need to restart the server. You will have to re-import model in design time (in NWDS),
    then do a DC Build & Deploy all the dependent DCs in the particular order and lastly DC Build, Deploy New Archive & Run your application.
    Kind Regards,
    Nitin

  • NoClassDefFoundError

    I can't get this small test applet to run. My browser has the plug-in, my path and classpath settings are correct and I am able to run an application using a JFrame but I can't get this to run. I compiled the .java file and then wrote the html file to display the .class file. What's wrong with this? Is there a step in the compiling I don't know about? The browser says it can't find the class and when I tried to run it using the appletviewer I got the NoClassDefFoundError. I don't think there is anything wrong with the code. Oh, and I'm running these from within the bin directory also.
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class first extends JApplet{
         public first(){}
         public void init(){
              JButton test=new JButton("Test");
    JPanel pane=new JPanel();
              pane.add(test);
              setContentPane(pane);
    <html>
    <body>
    <applet code="first.class">
    </applet>
    </body>
    </html>

    Browsers won't use the plug-in with the <Applet> tag.
    If you want the plug-in to be used, you must use an
    <object> tag. That being said, I don't think that any
    browsers support anything heigher than Java 1.1, which
    doesn't include Swing. Switch to AWT. If that doesn't
    work, set the codebase attribute of the Applet tag.
    I'm not exactly sure how, but you should be able to
    find out how to with relative ease.You do not need to switch to the AWT classes. Your problem lies somewhere between how your classpath is set up; where your webserver is pointing to find your classes; and, how you have your codebase and code tags are valued in your HTML page that contains the applet reference.
    Is your HTML file in the same directory as your .class files?
