Noise level with all four hard drive bays utilized

Hello!
I've finally placed my order on a Mac Pro (Early 2009) after spending a lot of time figuring out what CPU and memory options that would best fit my needs (for those interested 2x2.26GHz, 12GB, ATI 4870). What I didn't order was the hard drives...
I've read (for older Mac Pros?) that if you put in hard drives in all four bays, the system that previously was very silent becomes somewhat noisy (due to vibrations?) - can anyone confirm if this is true?
My plan was to add 4xWestern Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 32MB 1TB, and set up a software RAID. I heard suggestions that it would be better having only one hard drive in the Mac Pro and to add an external RAID that you could switch off if not needed.
My other alternate is to add SSD drives to lower any noise (and to make the system a bit snappier).
Anyway.. would be interesting to know if the system becomes noticeably noisier with additional hard drives (might only be relevant for older systems <= 2008)!?
Thank you for all your help!
Best regards,
Stephan

Got four of them in my first generation MP and it's quiet as a mouse. However, if you do not assure that the drive mounting screws are tight and the trays properly pushed in, then there's a hum that can be quite annoying. Newer generation MPs I've heard now have rubber dampers for the drive mounting screws that should eliminate the hum problem we've had in the first generation model.

It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard.

Please help me! My MacBook was stolen along with an external hard drive that had all my photos of my children on them. I hadn't backed to iCloud or backed anywhere else. I am distraught. No find my mac either...help...please... Some programmes are still running like drop of and Skype... Is it all over?!?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

If you are trying to recover photo stream photos, they are only held in iCloud for 30 days.  All you would be able ro recover is photo stream photos from the last 30 days.
If you have an iOS device that still has the photo stream photos one it, you can save them to the camera roll by opening the my photo stream album, tapping Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.  Once in the camera roll, they can be imported to iPhoto on your Mac as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t use iCloud. There's an iCloud Support Community where everybody uses iCloud. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/icloud/icloud_on_my_mac

  • Fubar with my external hard drive and not all Match items will play in iTunes on my Air but will on Apple TV. Any thoughts?

My entire library is on iTunes Match however after a recent fubar with my external hard drive, whilst I can play all my music through Apple TV I can't access it all on my Air. This was the original device used to download. Any thoughts?
There doesn't seem to be a specific period in my purchasing/downloading that this applies to. For instance, Adele 21 album downloaded at the time isn't playing but Skyfall the single is. Emeli Sande new album downloaded when it came out delivers this message: The song “Heaven” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? Same with Bellowhead which was a physical CD uploaded.
I'm not very technically minded so if anyone can help this poor, frustrated individual I would be very grateful.

When you say "when i double click on my itunes files it just opens up this list of music." it doesn't mean anything to me. You need to explain clearly, remember I only know what you tell me.
I need to understand how you have things set up and if you had you iTunes library database on the external drive or the c: drive. That is the iTunes folder containing iTunes library.itl.
What do you see when you open iTunes on the new PC, are your music files there. If not, every time you play a track it gets added to itUnes so you should at least have some files in your library.
What problem are you trying to solve? Is just getting the tracks into your iTunes library, or are you also concerned about ratings, count and playlists from the old PC. If so do you still have access to the old PC?

  • Do all external hard drives work with my macbook pro?

I just bought an HP Simplesave external hard drive. On the rear of the package, I noticed its compatible with XP, Vista, and 7, but nothing about Mac. I don't want to open it, but I was under the assumption that all external hard drives work on all systems. I didn't think they were operating system specific.
Anyone know about this specific hard drive, and about hard drives in general if my assumption is correct?

The drive should work fine once you've reformatted it for the Mac, but whatever small portion of the purchase price went to cover the included software will be wasted, because HP will only have included Windoze software with it. And in the unlikely event that you ever need to call HP tech support, they'll be clueless about anything involving a Mac. These are the two reason why DP suggests avoiding drives whose makers don't mention anything about use with Macs.

  • How do i transfer all my information from old computer to this one with a external hard drive

Copy what you want from the old computer's Home folder to the external drive. Connect the drive to the new computer and restore that data to the proper locations in the new computer's Home folder.

  • Fan Speeds, and Mirror Raid with New Internal Hard Drive

    Regards,
I recently installed and formatted a new hard drive in my PowerMac dual 2.3 ghz computer and I have a few questions.
    1. Now that there are two hard drives do I need to do anything to ensure that the fan on my computer can keep them cool? I think the fans I have in the hard drive bay is enough, but I do not know if they will automatically set themselves to run properly. I can monitor the fan speeds and temp from iStat pro, but do not remember what level the temperature was before installing the new one.
    2. Given that my new drive is a SeaDisc hard drive and the older one is a Western Digital, will this cause any problems in creating a mirrored RAID. I believe that both are 7200rpm drives, and my second hard drive is a little larger (I will just have unused space after making the RAID). I am concerned with the fact that these two drives are from two different manufactures. Will this cause problems or drastically slow down the reading and writing of data? Has anyone else experienced problems in making a mirrored RAID from two hard drives that are not exact matches, and even come from different manufacturers?
    Any advice will help.
    Thanks
    earpshmael

    Hi earpshmael;
Generally when creating RAID arrays the more similar the drive the less problems you tend to have.
The real question is exactly why do you want or need RAID?
I think so many people seem to think that RAID will solve all of their problem. I hate to tell you the bad news but it will not.
Generally there are to varieties of RAID available using the software RAID built into OS X which are 0 and 1. RAID 0 or stripling is generally for moving large file rapidly for applications like HD video. It usually doesn't help the OS. RAID 1 or mirroring is for protection from drive failure. It is not a valid backup solution.

  • Trouble with a new hard drive

I have an iMac A1224. Recently it started not booting up properly sometimes and would bring up a page with a question mark when you tried booting up. This led me to believe that the hard drive was going out in it. I took it apart and got the old drive out and put a new one in. I now run into a problem when trying to load Leopard. In the setup, when I get to the page that asks what you want to load Leopard on, there is nothing listed. The old drive did the same thing which led me to believe that the drive was doing bad in the first place. It this point, I'm starting to convince myself that the hard drive bay is faulty. However... before I come to that conclusion, I was wondering what anybody reading thought. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Windows formatted drives will not boot or install in a Mac
    Just follow the instructions -
Boot from your grey installer DVD disc 1 (hold down the C key on startup or hold down Alt/option on start and choose the installer disc).
OK the language page (if present).
From the installer screen, ignore the Continue button and go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility; depending on the OS version it may be in the Utilities menu or Tools menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.).
    click the partition tab.
Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need. Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When that's completed, close DU and continue with the installation.

  • Does the G71-340 US Notebook Have TWO Hard Drive Bays

My mother has the laptop mentioned in this subject line. She's got all kinds of issues going on with it. Runs slowly. Hangs. Shuts off randomly. I've run every virus scan and malware scan known to man and it's found nothing. It's either something that's on the hard drive that just isn't being detected and the only solution is to reformat the drive and reinstall everything from scratch or it's a hardware issue. I'm thinking of installing an SSD as the primary drive for speed improvement and reformatting the original drive that's in there right now and installing that as a secondary drive, *IF* this laptop has the ability to house 2 hard drives. Anyone know the answer to this 2nd hard drive bay question off the top of their head for this specific laptop? Thanks in advance.
    This question was solved.

Unfortunately this is not one of the models with the extra hard disk bay. So the answer is no. Consider an external usb hard disk or a NAS.
Installing an SSD as a replacement for the original hard disk is the way to go. Use the largest that you can afford and run a factory image recovery from the recovery disk set.
Take a look at the Maintainence & Service guide.

  • Z87 GA45 Gaming isn't recognising hard drive bays

    To starts, my set up specs are;
    Mobo - Z87 GA45 Gaming (brand new)
    CPU - i5 4670k (brand new)
    Ram - 8GB Gskill 1600, 8GB Geil Cobra 1600
Storage- 2TB Seagate 7200rpm HDD, 250GB Samsung EVO SSD
    Case - LianLi Tyr PCX2000
I bought the i5 second hand, but still unused a few weeks ago at a very good price, but of course needed a new mobo to accomodate it, since I was using an older GAX58-UD4P with an i7 920.
Hooked it all up, everything seems to be working apart from the hard drives. The case has 6 hard drive bays that are hot swappable, although I never move them. I have connected the HDD to the power supply and to the mobo correctly. The HDD is spinning up on start up, so it's getting power. However the mobo doesn't recognise that theyre even plugged in.
My cables all work, I plugged into the HDD directly and it recognised straight away with the same cables. I've also tried multiple hard drive bays, all to no avail.
It was suggest I turn on AHCI in the bios, this was already on however. I did put it on IDE mode (no idea what it is tbh) and it did recognise one of the HDD, although it couldn't read any data off it.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Test outside the case on a piece of plain cardboard or untreated wood then.
It's working fine with it outside the case. Didn't even need to wipe the OS, and it's in AHCI mode. The bays worked perfectly on my old mobo, that was only in my case yesterday....I doubt all 6 have broken in this amount of time.
I'll try and download some updates for the mobo and try again. Are there any old drivers for the Gigabyte mobo that could be causing conflicts that should be deleted?
    EDIT-
I have updated the mobo with everyone on the MSI updater list, it however has made no difference. I have formatted the SSD and cloned my OS partition to it, it works fine when plugged directly in, however same as before, is not detected when plugged into the hot swap hard drive bay

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one.
