Nokia, is this all you can do?

I recently got myself an E51, thinking that since it's been out there for a while and recently got a firmware update, it would be stable and well-tought-through. Main buying point was the built-in SIP client, since I tried fiddling with Fring on a Sony Ericcson P1i before and it was way too cumbersome for everyday use.
My needs are as simple as they seem obvious to me: While on the road, I want to make VoIP calls via the best internet connection available to me. That's it. Too much asked for?
For a test: I selected "always on" for my Sip account, picked my home network as a standard connection and made sure to check "internet call" for my call preferences. So I dialled a number, the phone made the connection via my VoIP account, and I was able to talk. That easy! Wow - so I thought.
1. To save battery life, I decided to deactivate "always on" for my Sip account. Now that's where the first two bugs come to bite you: Now, when you dial a number, the Nokia phone will simply go ahead and make a regular phone call, even though the call preferences are set to "internet call". You can overcome this bug by sacrificing convenience: Instead of just punching in the number and hitting "connect" you can go via the context menu and choose to make the internet call that the phone should be doing by itself. Second bug after you hang up: Nokia's sip client won't disconnect you from your VoIP provider anymore. This bug can also be overcome by sacrificing convenience: Toss out one of your standby menu applications, replace it with the "internet phone" system option. After each and every call, hang up, then go to the menu and thoroughly disconnect.
2. Next step: Leaving home, and entering the office, where you also have WiFi. Trying to make a call, Nokia's Sip client tells you that "the" Wifi connection is not available. Options: Make the call via GSM, or make no call at all. Only alternative: Dig through the phone configuration and reconfigure your VoIP account. Of course, that means when you get back home, the phone will tell you once again that "the" Wifi connection isn't available. I found a workaround for this, too, and from here on convenience is going way downhill: Instead of being able to dial directly (which we already sacrificed in step #1) or going via the context menu, you actually have to visit the "internet phone" system option after AND before your VoIP call. Because connecting via "internet phone" indeed seems to be the only way to be able to choose an available WiFi connection.
3. So having all of this figured out, you finally dare to take the E51 out on the road. Trying to make a VoIP call from a place that hasn't WiFi, you're in for the next surprise: Where's my UMTS connection? Turns out that the menu of available connections will only show you WiFi connections, nothing else. So once again you'll have to dig down to your VoIP provider configuration and change the default connection to your GSM provider. What happens now is that, every time you want to make a VoIP call, you start connecting via UMTS. Then you need to cancel that connection attempt, and after that you are finally presented with a list of possible connections (this time it's UMTS and WiFis together). If there's no WiFi available you can then go ahead and connect via UMTS anyway.
Nokia, are you kidding me?
Somehow I imagine Batman's Joker sitting somewhere in a top level office at Nokia viciously plotting all this. Well at least it would mean that *someone* is enjoying it - I am certainly not.
I have even tried to use third-party software (WeFi in particular) to somehow make this phone usable. For those who aren't familiar: WeFi creates a single access point (Automatic - WeFi) and will then connect you with the best WiFi connection actually available. This will actually work for all internet applications on the e51 - except for the SIP client. Because if you choose WeFi as the default access point and try to make a SIP call, the phone will tell you - you guessed it - that "the" Wifi connection isn't available but hey, how about a regular GSM call?
Concluding this post, I am somehow hoping that someone will tell me what a douchebag I am, that I have overlooked the essential configuration of my phone and that Nokia's SIP client is actually usable. I am really looking forward to this! Please! - Anyone?

Problem 2, specifically having to reconfigure VoIP accounts when moving between access points, is one I seem to have avoided.
I have one SIP account for each commonly used access point.
The SIP accounts are identical but for the name and default access point.
Both are set to automatic (in the Internet Tel app) and, as long as wifi scanning is enabled, the correct SIP connection is automatically created when moving between the access points.
Thing is, I only created one SIP account to start with. The rest were created automatically by the handset.
With my E65 I set up one SIP account "Gizmo" (Tools|Settings|Connection|SIP settings) with default access point "home", and one "Internet Tel Settings" record called "Gizmo Settings" (...Connection|Internet tel. settings).
I configured two wifi access points ("home" and "work").
While at work, starting the Internet Tel application (Connectivity|Internet Tel) it listed the work access point and tried to connect to the SIP account "Gizmo". In doing so it created a second SIP account "Gizmo(work)" automatically and associated that with "Gizmo Settings".
So each access point links to a single VoIP profile. Each VoIP profile links to many SIP accounts (one per access point).
Still don't understand why the configuration has to be so convoluted.

it says "the previous page is sending you to: LINK

Yeah, this seems to be something to do with Google, not your iPhone. A search on that error found this page:

which shows people using lots of browsers on different platforms suffering from it. No definitive solutions though.

What is your iPhoto version and how did you install it originally?
If it came with a new mac and Lion or Mt. Lion installed, you can delete iPhoto from the Applications folder (don't empty the Trash) and download it again from the "Purchased" tab of the App Store.
If you have bought the iLife CD, reinstall iPhoto from the installation media, after deleting it from the Application folder.
Or if your Mac came with an older MacOS X, but iLIfe preinstalled, use the system Install CDs,  see Terence Devlin's post here:  Re: My iPhoto isn't working. Error message says "you can't open the app "iPhoto" because it may be damaged or incomplete.

P.S: This may not only be a problem of a broken iPhoto. What did you do, directly before this happened? Did you run a program, that will clean the Mac to save space, like "Clean My Mac" or "Mac Keeper"? These little helpers can be risky and overdo it and remove too much. Then it might be safer to reinstall your system, because other essential files might be missing now.

Nice. Shall I say goodbye to my treasured iPhoto library? What happened?
I did just upgrade my iPhone to OS 5. Could that be related somehow?
    Help!

    1. Back up your iPhoto Library - you should always have a back up anyway.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    2. Reinstall
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

If you are unable or unwilling to upgrade to a version of Filemaker that runs natively under Mavercks, you can run your existing version of Filemaker by installing Snow Leopard Server into Parallels:

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open App Store > Purchases, and see if iPhoto app is listed. If not, unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928 Apart from that, check that iPhoto is in Applications folder. If not, put it in this folder.
If nothing works, remove iPhoto, open App Store > Purchases, and install iPhoto free of charge

  • Read this if you can't hear callers or voicemail o...

If you can no longer hear callers, cannot hear your voicemail, and are tearing your hair out trying to get any help from the obvious sources (your service provider, Nokia, your local store) - do not panic.
Call 121, as if you are making a vm call. While it is connecting, adjust the volume control button on the right of the phone. You will find that this volume control button operates on a 1-10 scale and is completely different from the one that is normally adjustable from the main screen, which operates on a 1-30 scale. Hopefully you will start to hear the recorded voice and all will be well.
This is not mentioned anywhere in the handbook or any of the online resources. I eventually found a clue via a different help site - but couldn't find where the 2nd volume control was. Thank goodness I eventually stumbled upon it by accident.
I know I am not the only one to have lost connection with a caller half-way through a conversation. It must be a design fault of some sort. I am just relieved that I did not follow the Nokia diagnostics advice to reset my phone to factory settings (after backing up etc etc), or pay out vast ££s for the privilege of sending off my phone for a non-existent repair.
I am not techy - but I am posting this in the hope that it will save others the frustration, expense and time I have wasted over the past 3 days trying to get any sense out of Vodafone and Nokia. (I am sorry if that breaches some form of discussion board protocol - but it is a fact.)
If anyone from Nokia is reading this will you PLEASE update your handbooks to include this information, and take account of it within your online diagnostics page, which told me to restore factory settings. (Fortunately I have no idea how to backup data on my phone, and the advice didn't tell me either.)
If anyone from Vodafone is reading this, will you PLEASE train your sales staff and helpdesk staff to understand this problem.
Feeling calmer now ... off to make a large mug of coffee.

This is normal an also the same with other phone brands and OS. Even on android and IOS the call volume is different from the general volume of the phone. If you have a non-lumia nokia phone, it is also the same.

  • Regarding setting SGA size(Answer this if you can)

    Hi all,
I need some justified suggestions from you all for the following Qs.I'm using Oracle 10G release 2(please dont give single word answers)
    1) Is there any relation between SGA_MAX_SIZE and no of sessions
    2) Is there any relation between SGA_MAX_SIZE and no of processes
    3) Is there any relation between SGA_MAX_SIZE and no of weblogic application connected.
    4)Which is the better option?
    a) having 2 processor with 2Ghz speed
    b) having 1 processor with 5GHz speed
    5) why Unix is preferable over Windows for Oracle database?
    6) How many sessions and processes are generally constantly ocupied by OS?
    Thanks in advance..
    AD

    Hi,
1/ Well, I don't think there is a direct link between the two. Simply when you have more sessions, the probability (depends on your database king, data, structure, access method, ...) of using more data gets higher. And if you use more data, you need more SGA. But on the other hand if you open 10 sessions that do "select 1 from dual" or 10000000 sessions that do the same select, you will not see the difference at SGA level, but a PGA level (and latches)
2/ IIRC, in order to synch background processes, Oracle allocates a +16M in the Shared Pool. But this is for background processes, and you will not have many of them. If you're thinking of U.S.P., then you're back to question 1, though then I can think of another thing. DEDICATED or SHARED server? When using SHARED server architecture, you want tu use the Large Pool feature and hence set up a bigger S.G.A.
    3/ Joker ^^
4/ Depends on what you'll be doing. f you're going to use partitionning, parallel query, etc, I'd go for 2 CPUs (which you can eventually upgrade to 2x5GHz procs)
5/ There are so many reasons that there should be books on it. As for me, the main things to consider:
    . Robust/Solid, don't need to pach everyday
    . Virus?
    . Security
    . Possibility to configure everything
. Easy tu use and understand (Oh, well... not for anybody, but...)
    . Logic
    . Scripting
    . etc
6/ Don't understand the question. But I feel the answer should be 42 (click).
    Regards,
    Yoann.
