NOKIA N8 "CLAIMED" WATER INGRESSION...WILL NOT FIX...

Over the last few weeks i have been going through a intense trial of trying to get help from Nokia over my phone. I originally took my handset in because i believed it had software problems, ie: constantly re-booting and finally would not turn on at all. To my surprise, when i went to retrieve my phone, i were told, the phone was dead due to water ingression. Now, this is when i arced up! My phone was and still is in pristine condition, it has never ever been subjected to moisture in any way. it has always been protected in a cse, evident by the perfect carriage and screen, and never left anywhere it could get close to moisture. This fault i were then told, of course voided my warranty. SO, I HAVE A SIX MONTH OLD N8, EXTREMELY WELL LOOKED AFTER, AND NOKIA DO NOT WANT TO KNOW! On further investigation, there are literally thousands of complaints of this nature concerning this phone. So here we have an obviously inherant problem with this phone {and others i hasten to add} and NOKIA will not address it. Nokia care centres are a complete joke. they are trained it seems in the art of "fobbing" people off, the more they say no, eventually people give up...well guess what nokia, i will never give up. the telecommunications ombudsman has been informed as too the consumer affairs department. both who have advised me, NOKIA CANNOT USE THE WATER INGRESSION ARGUMENT FOR THEIR PHONES, THEY ARE STILL COVERED BY "STATUTORY WARRANTY CONDITIONS". Apparently Nokia and carriers such as VODAFONE have both been warned by these bodies concerning this. I WANT SOMETHING DONE ABOUT THIS NOKIA, AND I WANT IT NOW. MY TIME IS MORE PRECIOUS THAN A HANDSET, BUT THERE IS A PRINCIPLE HERE!!! STAND BY YOUR WARRANTIES AND FIX THESE INFERIOR PHONES!!!!!!!!
total state of confusion

@beang1
I like you am here in Australia. Under current Australian law phone companies (manufacturers and telco's) cannot use water ingress as an excuse to get out of their warranty obligations. This has been stated by Graham Samuel - head of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission - who is responsible for overseeing the provisions of the Trade Practices Act. He has stated on talk back radio that he is sick of phone companies using water ingress as an excuse to get out of their obligations. He has also stated that the commission has recently, successfully, taken legal action against both Vodaphone and 3. The commission I believe from what he has said is in the process of taking legal action against Telstra and Optus. He has also intimated that he has others (Nokia) in his sights.
Is your phone on a contact with a Telco or did you buy it outright? If it is on a contract with a telco then it is the responsibility of the Telco (under the provisions of the Statutory Warranty) to fix your phone.
I suggest you take this matter up with the ACCC and your Local Office of Consumer and Business Affairs.
Graham Samuel has also stated if anyone is having problems with a Telco or phone manufacturer to get in contact with the ACCC (not the Ombudsman) and let them know of your complaint. I did this just recently in regard to Apple Australia and was told the ACCC is in negotiations with Apple in respect of the fact that apple products (iphone and iPad) do not work out of the box which is contrary to Australian Law. Apparently this will be rectified with ios 5.

If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5s. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.

  • Apple will not fix my Iphone?

I had called earlier today to get my first generation IPhone repaired because of water damage. The representative I had talked to said that they would not fix it because it is out of warranty. I thought that the warranty only covered problems to the IPhone that were Apples fault not my own. On the Apple site it says it is $199 to get the Iphone repaired for "Out of Warranty & Accidental Damage Repair". So I am confused on why my Iphone could not be fixed. Can someone help explain this to me please.

You are entitled to an exchange for an additional fee.
"10. What happens if I return my iPhone for warranty service and it is determined that it is not eligible for warranty service?
If you requested in-warranty Advance Replacement Service and the reason for the original iPhone failing is not covered under warranty, you will be responsible for the equipment replacement value charge of $399 for the 8GB model and $499 for the 16GB model.
    11. What happens if I return my iPhone for out of warranty service and it is determined that it is not repairable?
Only iPhones that are repairable are eligible for Out of Warranty Advance Replacement Service. iPhones that have been subject to liquid damage, catastrophic damage, or damage as a result of the unit being opened are not repairable. If you requested Out of Warranty Advance Replacement Service and the the original iPhone is not repairable, you will be charged for the Advance Replacement Service Out of Warranty Cover Charge (ARS OOW Cover Charge), which is the difference between equipment replacement value and the Advance Replacement Out of Warranty Fee."

Please print the link above and take it to an Apple store. If they give you any problems, please speak to a Manager and insist that you need to walk home with a phone. Let them know you're serious and settle for a display model iPhone 3G (or 2G).

  • Is It True That Apple Will Not Fix This Flickering Issue?

Very disappointing to read so many postings that Apple techs are saying this problem will not be fixed, thus ruining what had been a great experience for so many. If this is true, this issue warrants public notification.

The AppleTV update was not mandatory. It is not applied automatically, and will continue to function without an update. Others have reported successfully exchanging updated AppleTVs for models with earlier versions of the OS when there was a problem with the update.
Anybody whose equipment does not match Apple's specifications (e.g. those with TVs that do not have built-in HDMI ports, or that cannot accept a 720p signal) should be very wary of installing any updates. As these are not supported displays, Apple is unlikely to test updates on them, and it is possible that an update will cause loss of function. It would be wise to wait to hear from others with similar TVs before you decide whether to apply an update. This also means that if you own an unsupported TV, it is possible that you will not be able to get access to future updates that include features that you would like to have.
Frankly, if you have an unsupported TV and are dead-set against replacing it, you probably should consider returning or selling your AppleTV and buy a product, such as the Roku box, that supports your type of TV.

  • Airport extreme will not fix problems or allow manual settings

So I have a recently purchased airport extreme and the dreaded "flashing amber light" problem, but I can't find a solution that works. When I open my airport utility it says it has found an airport extreme that is experiencing problems, and then gives all the specs of my airport extreme (e.g. name, ip address, etc.) and says it is reporting problems.
It then instructs me to press the continue button to resolve the problems. However, when I do that (or attempt to open the manual settings), it thinks and thinks and thinks while reading the configuration and then finally tells me that an error occurred while reading my configuration and I should make sure the airport is properly plugged in and in range of my computer, though it's plugged in properly and sitting immediately next to the computer.
I would also note that the internet works fine on my desktop (being run through the airport to my mac), but just will not work on the danged airport.
Any idea of what I can do now?

It opens up a new window, but still gives me the exact same error message about not being plugged in or in range, though it is both of those

  • Firefox (17.0.1) no longer works with Adobe 10.1.4 and MAC OSX 10.7.5 Lion? Online disc. say Adobe 11.0 will not fix? Suggestions?

I can open pdf files in safari, however my office products work more effectively with Firefox. Currently the firefox browser shows a blank screen when I try to launch pdf file within my work program. So I would really like to be able to use firefox as the browser. Is there an update or fix that will work? Although I am currently on Adobe 10.1.4. after reading online discussions it suggests that 11.0 doesn't work either and so I hate to try another update. Everything was working fine with old Adobe version (which I don't know which one that would have been and not sure if and/how to get it back) until last Sunday when my husband decided to update my Adobe without my permission. Can anyone help?

You can disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.
*Firefox > Preferences > Applications > Adobe PDF document : Use Adobe Reader
PDF files may also be found under another entry like Portable document.

  • Blackberry Passport sim tray issue is prevalent and they will not fix it for you because it is your fault. Ridiculous.

I bought my Blackberry passport on Feb 13rd. Right out of the box the sim tray didn't read the sim. I thought it is my sim's problem, so I waited for another sim. New sim came in, still didn't read. After a long call with customer support and BB virtual support, I had my device sent in around mid March. They checked it and said I damaged the sim tray and I need to pay 268$ to have it fixed. I though it is ridiculous since I haven't done anything to the phone. So I argued with them and eventually they agreed to have my fixed without cost.
However when they sent me back the device, I poped in the sim and it only works for 1 day, on and off the second day and then not reading the sim at all after that. I think the sim tray's problem with the passport is prevalent and the pin can be broken by the simple act of poping in the sim card. My ATT sim is working perfectly fine on the 5s and my brother's iphone 6.
After 2 days of receiving the "repaired" device, I call them again and this time they said it is certainly my fault and if I send it in again, I will have to pay 268$ to have it fixed.
So I thought for people out ther if you have a passport, don't pop in and out the sim card. It can really easily be broken.
For me, I think now I just gonna use my "broken sim tray new passport" as a reading device. After 10 years, I will officially switch to other brand. Still love the keyboard though, but anyway.

Check that your sim card does not have a burr or edge on it before you insert it, as that may be what's damaging the SIM pins.
Site anly allow linlks to web images, so here's what the tray is supposed to look like - with the SIM cover on.
FWIW - a T3 torx driver is required to remove the screws around the SIM  and TF card tray cover. That would allow you to look at the underlying pins - and possibly - with a bit of luck, fix them on your own.

  • Sims Life Stories does not run on Leopard.  Aspyr will not fix it.

    Apple? Can you help us?
I submitted a bug report to Aspyr and got the following note. I'm inconsolable.
Hello, XXXX. Thanks for contacting us.
Unfortunately, this game was not developed for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Games that were developed for a previous Mac OS, as this one was, may have problems running on Mac OS X 10.5. Unlike PC operating systems, the Macintosh operating systems have video card driver and other updates built in, and this can cause problems we cannot immediately fix.
Thus, this game is not supported on OS 10.5. Nevertheless, we will be working diligently with Apple to get these issues resolved as quickly as possible. Please keep in mind that there are some things that can only be fixed by Apple, and we will be in direct contact with them to fix the issues that can be fixed.
Please feel free to let us know of any problems you are having relating to our games and their ability to operate in Leopard. It will take some time for us working with the new OS and our customers to identify issues and make the necessary patches as needed.
If you wish, you may sign up for our newsletter for future announcements regarding patches:
    https://www.aspyr.com/news/newsletter_signup
Thank you for your patience, and have a great day!

I myself am having problems with an Aspyr title. I would give them some time until the dust from the initial Leopard release has settled.
    Hopefully,
A.) Aspyr will offer up a patch
B.) issues will be resolved when Apple releases their .1 or .2 updates

  • Apple cancelled my warranty and will not fix computer!

I sent my computer in to be fixed after talking to a genius on the phone. All I needed fixed was the inside top case (around the keyboard) because a small piece had cracked and broken off from closing the top and it hurts to put my wrist on it to type. It all sounded fine and a friend recently got a new case for her macbookpro because it was discolored. Today I see my repair status is on hold so I called and they said that my computer had impact damage and would cost $500 to repair before reinstating my AppleCare to replace the case. ***? I have searched the web and can not find this happening to anyone else! Does this sound normal? My computer has not had a hard fall. It just cracked from daily closing. My friend's computer has dents and its 2 years older and they replaced her case for free. There's not anything even wrong with my computer besides the case. Am I missing something?

    Scubagirl12,
How have you packed the machine? If it bumped against anything hard, or heavy books were against it for prolonged period of time, or it was against a seat inside a backpack, that might have damaged it if it wasn't properly padded. If none of those describe the problem, and you've always pulled your cables out properly* as described below:
    http://www.macmaps.com/frayguide.html
Call 1-800-APLCARE, and tell them you believe your machine was manufactured with the screws too tight or loose, and it was only noticeable after prolonged use, and believe they should fix the case at their cost if your machine is under a year old, or you have purchased AppleCare, and it is less than 3 years from date of the computer's purchase. If you are beyond AppleCare, (either first year, or purchased 3 years from date of computer's purchase), and purchased by credit card, and believe the case was never the right tightness to begin with, sometimes your credit card prolongs warranty, and you can ask them.
If none of the above seems to help you, and there was a possible heavy bump, or improper cable disconnection, unfortunately only your homeowners insurance might cover it, if it has accident protection. Warranty does not equal insurance. Above all, be calm when talking to all of them.
Good luck. This is a user to user board, and we can't speculate on how Apple will rule in your case. But just letting you know what options may or may not help you.

  • Applecare states that iOS4 update will NOT fix antenna issue

    http://gizmodo.com/5580587/applecare-the-iphone-4-update-wont-solve-the-antenna- problem
I lose signal, when placing the phone in my pocket. I have a silicone case on it now. I'm waiting for my bumper, if that doesn't keep it from dropping signal while in my poocket, it's going back.

I lose signal, when placing the phone in my pocket. I have a silicone case on it
now. I'm waiting for my bumper, if that doesn't keep it from dropping signal
while in my poocket, it's going back.
I predict the bumper will have no effect on the phone in your pocket, especially since you already have a case on it. The only thing the bumper will fix is when you have the palm of your hand directly on the left side of the phone bridging the gap between the antennas. It improves things in that scenario quite effectively. Height above ground, in the clear, with no large absorbent masses in the way, makes the most improvement. If the signal is weak, the best thing you can do is get the phone higher, in the clear, and move near a window if inside. Standard cell phone protocol.
But I have to say (with all the OPs), the iPhone 4 is phenomenal in its ability to stay on the air in weak signal conditions. Vastly better than earlier models. The specific antenna issue is a bit embarrassing for Apple, but certainly not a deal killer. No phone from any manufacturer is going to perform optimally in a pocket.
I am surprised no one is complaining about how slippery the phone is. It became obvious to me, in the first few minutes of use, something had to be added to "get a grip" on the phone, or it was not going to survive long around me. It slid off everything that was not perfectly flat. My knee, my lap in the car, you name it. It is the most difficult phone to hang on to that I have ever had.
The bumper also cures that problem. Not 100% in all conditions (you still can drop it) but it improves the odds enormously. Is it also Apple's fault the phone is slippery? Of course. But the fix is the same.

  • Is there a way to recover my photos on my iphone that has not been backed up.  It was dropped in water and will not turn on.  I have had it in rice for 24 hours.  Thank you

Is there a way to recover my photos on my iphone that has not been backed up.  It has been in rice for 24 hrs.
    Thank you !

No since thay have not been backed up. Hopefully the phone will work long enough after the 'rice treatment" for you to recover the phone and do a backup. The rice sometimes does not work. Good luck.

  • App Developer Wondershare will not fix crashes to (iDraft), due to iOS 4.2.

I emailed Wondershare, who makes great products and services. They have a few apps, in the app store, but mainly focus on conversions of Video, and Music computer programs for all iDevices. Now, I love the iDraft program, and think it's great! But, unfortunately the app now crashes every time you hit the + butto for the next page...
This is their response about their iDraft program for $3.99...
    Dear Customer,
Thanks for contacting us. This is Ivan from support team.
Currently iDraft does not support iOS 4.2, and we do not provide future upgrades for this product due to our company long-term blueprint.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.
We are now working on a new application on Android platform.
Just let me know if you have any question.
I will keep posting updates about this issue. That's if they do contact me again... Left someone of a nasty message, but they most certainly deserved it!
I would love to hear your thoughts about this, and if something like this has happens before. Bottom line, is that they are selling an app, that will always fail.
    <Edited by Host>

Notify Apple - report a problem in iTunes, go to Apple's feedback pages. If the product genuinely doesn't work on 4.2, they should withdraw it or at least make clear to potential buyers
Email the Apple blogs - Cult of Mac, Macworld etc
