Non-Global Zones - how can I tell what the Global Zone is

Hi,
I have a host that I know is a non-global zone (ngz). I can ssh to the ngz as root or a non-privileged user.
But once there how do I know what the host name for the global zone is?
I could probably run a script from all global zones to report all running zones and so I'd know that way but I have a specific need to know from inside the ngz.
Thanks!
Brian

That's a built-in security feature; and I know of no way to circumvent this mechanism.
I had some hope that there was a way to 'see' at least the global-zone information from the zone. From the shell the 'zone' commands are available ..
:# zoneadm list -cv
ID NAME             STATUS         PATH
48 hostname_svn   running        /  So it's at least aware that it is a zone, even if it can't tell me anything else about itself. I can still go the long way around to get the information for my need, thanks.
The global zone is the only thing that can see everything. The non-global zones can only see information specific to their zone.
This is by design and it really is a security mechanism. You don't want the zones running outside of their boundaries and information about the global zone (or any other zone) is outside the boundaries of a non-global zone.

  • How can I tell what the iTunes build is before I download?

I am having difficulty finding out what the iTunes build is for the current download from the Apple site. I am running iTunes 7.6 (29); I assume the "29" is the build for my installed version. I also assume that Software Update will ignore build changes unless the version changes.
I do not want to download and install the current iTunes build unless it is different from my currently installled app. How can you tell what the specific version and build are from the Apple download site?
    Thanks!

I am running iTunes on Leopard.

I am not a computer savy person.  I just need to plug in and have the machine do what it should do.
Not a problem, but that indicates you have a lot to learn.
File extensions like mpeg, mp4., avi, wmv, etc. are just wrappers. It is like a box the audio or video content is placed inside. The audio and video content must be encoded with a codec before it is placed in the box. There are thousands of codecs. Not all are installed on your Mac. You must have the same codec installed that encoded the video in order to play it. So, while Quicktime does support mpeg wrapper, it may not have the codecs to decode the internal video.
Some programs have lots of the codecs available to them, like VLC, Niceplayer, MPlayerX, etc.
You can also get "plug-ins" for Quicktime that add codecs to Quicktime, like Perian. Although it is no longer being developed, Perian still works well.
Why is it so difficult? Probably because they are always working on ways to compress the video to get better playback.

  • Generic wsdl - how can you tell what the field assignment is?

When using the generic wsdl, it seems that your custom fields are mapped to fields such as:
    customcurrency12
    customtext4
When accessing the asset class, how can tell what field is assigned to what custom value? When I look in the admin > application customization > asset > asset field setup
I can see the list of fields and field types but not the number on the end so that I can assign it in my web service code. Is there a way to see what your custom fields are mapped to (i.e. custom standard discount is mapped to custompercent11)
Thanks in advance any help you can lend on this,
    AspnetDev

You can use the getMapping web service to get al ist of all the fields for a record type. for each field you get the ElementName (which is what you get in the generic wsdl) and DisplayName which you can use it to match to your fields.
    <Field>
         <DisplayName>My Custom Field</DisplayName>
         <ElementName>CustomText74</ElementName>
         <DataType>Text (Short)</DataType>
    </Field>

  • How can you tell what the OS is?

I have an OS on an external drive. Is there any way to tell what version it is without actually booting into it?
    Thanks very much.

Open Disk Utility, select the disk from the sidebar, and click Info. This won't work for Logical  type volumes; I'm not sure if it works for Windows, but I'm assuming you are talking about OS X on the external drive.

  • Messages: How Can I Tell What The Unread Badge Is For?

Often recently I end up with a "1" in the unread badge for Messages (ie, stuck to the dock icon and the command-tab icon), and cannot get it to go away or figure out what it is for. None of the visible conversations have the "unread" dot next to them, and I can't just open up one-by-one all the closed conversations from my buddy list to randomly guess if they are the source of some notification.
Is this just a weird UI limitation at the moment, or is there a way to figure out what it's talking about? Right now I have to quit Messages to "clear" this distracting (and indiscernable) notification?
I can't take a screenshot of the command-tab feature, but here's what I mean as it appears in the dock.

    Hi
At present this happens to some people.
In some cases the number can be a  Minus figure.
It can be improved by deleting com.apple.imservice.iMessages plist and then restarting Messages.
You do this by having the Finder as the App on the Menu Bar.
Use the Go Menu > Go to Folder and type ~/Library/Preferences  in the dialogue box that appears.
Find the .plist and drag it to the Trash.
    Restart Messages.
