Noob question. Startup Oracle database?

Hi folks!
I know, this question is quite common.. But I really need a "tutorial" to startup "my" database, I really can't get it started..
The server that the database is running on was restarted a few weeks ago and now I'm trying to get the db up and running again, so far without any luck..
It's a Oracle 10.2 on a Linux Redhat machine and I have absolutly no experiance of Oracle before.. The previous "expert" on this DB left the following instructions if the server had to be restared:
"start the enterprise manager and the start the listener and database from there."
That's about all documentation there is about the whole thing..
So... What have I tried so far?
Tried to start EM by using the following command:
"+emctl start dbconsole+"
But the system could not regonize the command "emctl".
Then I created a .login-file that set up some eniviroment variables:
setenv ORACLE_HOME /local_disk/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1
setenv PATH $ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH
setenv ORACLE_SID orcl
After done that I could run "emctl start dbconsole".
When I login to the EM page the database, listener and agent connection is down. And that is expected I guess. But in the "Agent connection" area it siad that it has faild with the following error "ORA-12505: TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach)"
So I've started the listener from the EM page and it seems to start up but when I try to start the database the following error occurs:
"+Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12514, TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor The Connection descriptor used by the client was: (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=my.domain.se)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=orcl)))+"
I'm guessing that there is something more to do than just "start the f****g EM and everything will be OK"...
Could someone of you guys (or girls) help me with a noob tutorial how to start this database? I'm starting to panic here... :)

  • Question about Oracle Database 11g: Program with PL/SQL

    Hello,
    I've read that:
This course is a combination of Oracle Database 11g: PL/SQL Fundamentals and Oracle Database 11g: Develop PL/SQL Program Units courses.
In order to preparing for this exam, i should read the student guide, so there are 4 pdf files. One is Oracle Database 11g: PL/SQL Fundamentals, and the other 3 are regarding to Oracle Database 11g: Develop PL/SQL Program Units (volume I, II and III). My question is, regarding to this last one (Oracle Database 11g: Develop PL/SQL Program Units), which volume should i read? I saw that volume I has 400+ pages, and the IIIrd ~80.
Which document should i read? What's the difference between them?
    Thanks!

Passing the exam and becoming certified are not a matter of simply reading a book or taking a training class. While books and classroom materials as well as in-class training are all important steps in preparing for an exam, experience and research are just as important. I cannot tell you that there are 53 questions on the exam and every single question maps directly back to page 13, paragraph 3 in XX book. However, If you have the classroom material, and you have the list of exam topics, you should be able to find most of the information you need. In some cases, if you are not completely familiar with a specific topic, or you don't feel like the information in the book gives you all the information you need, you may need to do a little additional research. This is all part of preparing for an exam. This process is what makes you successful as a certified professional.
Your focus seems to be solely on the course materials that you have and what volumes and chapters you should read. I'm trying to give you a different perspective - preparing for an exam is not necessarily about taking one course or reading one book and being ready. You need to review the exam topics and be sure that you are familiar with each topic.

  • Noob questions regarding RAC database

    Hi,
I've run a number of Oracle servers, but I'm just now labbing my first RAC server. Firstly, I'm having some inconsistencies with regards to logging in. Observe:

In any previous experience, setting ORACLE_SID to daradb would mean that @daradb was unnecessary. What am I missing in this regard?
The second issue being, I don't ever seem to be able to logon using the standard OS authentication I'm used to:
    [oracle@rac1 ~]$ sqlplus /@daradb
    SQL*Plus: Release 11.1.0.6.0 - Production on Tue Jul 7 06:16:56 2009

    ERROR:

It's not really an issue in the sense that I can still get in using system/password, but it's important I grasp what's going on before I proceed.
Background: Initially I couldn't logon at all. For some reason it appears that tnsnames.ora was installed by the dbca wizard under the ASM_HOME, instead of ORACLE_HOME. I copied it to the correct place to enable connection.

Thanks sybrand. You are correct about the naming assumption. Accordingly the following allows me to more specifically logon to the chosen server:
    [oracle@rac1 daradb]$ sqlplus system@daradb1
    or
    [oracle@rac1 daradb]$ sqlplus system@daradb2
However using either of these SIDs doesn't appear to change this issue.
    [oracle@rac1 daradb]$ ORACLE_SID=daradb1 sqlplus system

    Enter password:
    ERROR:
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
    It still requires the @daradb1.
    Regarding permissions, I'm somewhat lost.

  • Oracle Database 10g: Administration Workshop I Part 1 CD

On the first learning CD for Database 10g Administration, there is an incorrectly displayed question.
Oracle Database 10g Workshop -> Installing an Oracle Database -> Installation Using OUI -> Page 21
Question is: To Locally manage the databases stored on one or multiple computers, you select:
    A. the Configure the Database with Enterprise Manager check box on the Management Options page.
    B. etc.
    C. etc.
    D. the Raw Devices option button on the Store Options page.
When the correct answer (A) is selected, the dialogue displayed states:
'That is incorrect. The Raw Devices option is used to manage the storage devices outside the OS file system. Try again'
As if D was selected instead of A. If D is selected, the message is:
That is correct. The Configure the Database with Enterprise Manager option enables you to locally manage the databases stored in one or multiple computers.
It seems as though the links next to question A and D are flipped.

    Hello,
I have used it and couple of others workshop in CD format and it is worth buying. Make sure you have a database setup where you can play all the excercise available in workshop. Beside that I have also attended instructer led training, though self-study course material pretty much same but you can't replace an experienced instructor and his insights. I recommend if you can at least one instrcuter led training beside your self-study course it will be really helpful to you.

  • Query Regarding Oracle Database Client

    Hello,
I'm new to ORACLE and Intented to become Oracle Developer and DBA. I've question regarding Oracle Database Client software.
I know that there is Oracle Database server software but what is this Oracle Database Client. Is there any need to Install it on client machine as client mostly access the database use application software mainly develope in Java or C# etc. So, what is it need.
and one more question regarding SQL *Plus. Is it client process or server process as I learnent that it is client process and if it is. Is it can be part of Oracle Database Client. and can we seperately install the Oracle Database Client on machine on which DB server is aslo Installed.
    Looking for reply.
    Regards,
    Danish Kamran

Certainly you are not mentioning the Oracle version, it is very important. Whenever you post a question reference the oracle version. There is a disk known as the oracle Client (10gR1, 10gR2 and 11gR1), this disk contains all required software to setup a client environment. If you are working with clients such as Java or C# you must have either the jdcb client driver (Jjava) or the ODBC software to access the database, this is included in the Oracle client disk.
    Instant Client
There are other options for the client, you can install the instant client, this option allows you to install only the drivers without the Oracle utilities, this is particular useful if you are deploying third party applications and you don't want to install the complete client disk.
    SQLPlus
SQL*Plus is a client application that runs on the client side, when you open a session it requests an Oracle server process to be executed on the server side. Once the session has been successfully setup then you can issue SQL commands from the client side. You should be aware that even if you launch SQL*Plus from the server side you will be working with two processes, one for the client and the second one for the oracle server. This connection mode is also known as dedicated server, but you should be aware that there is another connection mode known as shared server, I won't explain it since it already goes off topic.

  • Slow startup of oracle database instance

    Hi,
It take about 7 minutes to start an oracle database on a vmware linux machine.
On the host system, the same database take less than one minute to startup.
Hardware : hp proliant dl380 g4 (1 intel Xion 3.2), 6 gb of memory (3.9 for vritual machine)
OS : Redhat linux AS 3.0 (both on host machine and vmware machine)
    vmware : 3.2 GSX
Oracle : 10.1.0.3 (both on host and vm machine)
Is this startup time normal or is there something that I could change?
On the host machine a copy of the database takes less than a one minute to startup.
    Andre

On the host machine a copy of the database takes less than a one minute to startup.Well if you have (as Andre) "same" databases on guest and on host, I can just repeat:
Reconfigure vmware settings, search in help everything about let's say "performance of guest OS"!
It's also exists vmware-Forum with bunch of usefull information.
This is not Oracle related question.
    Cheers!

  • How to STARTUP multiple Oracle Databases, using sqlplus

    Hi guys,
I am pretty new at solaris and oracle, right now i have oracle 11gr2 installed in my Solaris 10 machine.
    I managed to create 2 databases with 2 different ORACLE_SID, (e.g. A & B)
my question is, is it possible to have both of this Databases mounted and opened??
here is the step i have done so far:
    - go to /ORACLE_HOME/bin
    - I started my one and only LISTENER - ./lsnrctl start LISTENER
    - ORACLE_SID=A
    - ./sqlplus / as sysdba
    - SQL>STARTUP
Everything went well, until i set another ORACLE_SID (in another terminal) to ORACLE_SID=B, and when i tried to start it up using SQLPLUS, i get this "Segmentation Fault - core dumped".
It seems like i start the 2nd database wrongly, is there proper way to do this?
i need the 2 databases (SID A & SID B) to be running concurrently.
    thanks

i bought the OCA Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-051) and i am not sure do i have to read the whole book ! or just go through the exam objectives table ? because the book covers lots of topics that's not in the exam and i am kind of tight on time if any one had the book or used it pls help
To make it more clear i have a table in the book that shows each exam topic with page number next to it Like this:
    Restricting and Sorting Data
[ ]      Limit the rows that are retrieved by a query Pg:104
[ ]      Sort the rows that are retrieved by a query Pg:136
[ ]      Use ampersand substitution to restrict and sort output at runtime
Using Single-Row Functions to Customize Output

Yes indeed. Practice at work (and elsewhere) is the best way to learn and ro reinforce learning.
However, the more you read, the more you will be exposed to ideas and variations. Eventually you will find that many of the books have errors in various places. You will be winning when you are able to read and identify the errors AND explain why they are errors.
The way your original question was written implied that you were after the minimum effort to pass an exam. Your last reply implies a different, and better, attitude.
My suggestion therefore is to concentrate on the actual examples, but as quickly as possible expand to areas of interest. Explore as much as you possibly can, but make it a 'learning exploration' byut asking yourself questions and then investigating what the answer is.
Also note that in Oracle nearly every answer has an exception. The best of the best know this and try very hard to understand when things go according to plan and when (and why) expections occur.

  • Connecting to an oracle database questions

<p>Our current solution to connecting to our oracle database uses the following code:</p><p>    ReportClientDocument clientDoc = new ReportClientDocument;</p><p>    java.sql.ResultSet rs =  fetchResultSet(driverName, connectStr, userName, password, <u>query</u>);</p><p>    clientDoc.getDatabaseController().setDataSource(rs, <u>tableName</u>,tableName+"_ResultSet"); </p><p>The code for subreports is very similar, but isn&#39;t necessary for my question. The problem w/ this approach is we have to define the SQL query and the table name in the JSP, which we shouldn&#39;t have to do considering both of these are stored in the report. Any changes to the reports&#39; sql would then require someone to edit the jsp, which is just bad.  </p><p>I have been reading up on the ConnectionInfo and ConnectionInfos classes (nice naming convention btw) and the CrystalReportViewer.setDataBaseLogonInfos() method, and I believe a solution may lie here. The problem is the tutorials on using the ConnectionInfo class assume the database name is stored in the report, and we do not want to assume this. We are developing our reports to be used by our customers, who may name their database whatever they want so long as the tables inside it are what we specify. Because of this assumption, I have yet to find a good explanation of how to use the setAttributes(PropertyBag) method which is the only I have seen to specify the database name (within a connection string). • Questions about 1Z0-047 Oracle Database SQL Expert

I am planning to take this exam and I have several questions:
    1) I am using Steve O'Hearn's 'SQL Certified Expert Exam Guide' book and this states the following about SQL functions:
"Be sure to review the Oracle Database SQL Language Reference Manual and review the lengthy description of all of the SQL functions before taking the exam"
In trial tests it seemed that book's information was enough, but how about real exam? Is it necessary to study something in addition to this book information? You can answer regarding other exam objectives as well, if there is something that I should read from some other materials.
    2) The book states that I can add not null constraint to column that has null values, if I specify default value. I tried and cannot, I get error. So the book states it wrongly or do I misunderstand something?
    3) The book states that I cannot drop a NOT NULL constraint, but I can get the job done using: ALTER TABLE table_name MODIFY column_name NULL;
    I tried and I can execute: alter table table_name drop constraint nameofnotnullconstraint;
    4) To use external tables, is only read grant on the directory necessary or also write?
    5) I understood from the book that to flashback table (e.g to before drop) I need to have row movement enabled on the table. But I tried and I can make this flashback operation to table that does not have row movement enabled. How can this be explained!
    Big thanks in advance!

#1) well, the manual is free; find here the SQL Language Reference - http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/portal.all_books#index-SQL
#2 & 3) If you proved it yourself, that settles it!
    #4) Here's a good article about external tables: http://www.oracle-developer.net/display.php?id=512
I noted this paragraph in it, which might answer your question:
In addition to the standard read-write Oracle directory that we need for our external table, we also need an additional executable directory object for the preprocessor. This directory defines the location of the executables used by the preprocessor (we will be using gzip below). As far as Oracle is concerned, an executable directory is one that has EXECUTE privileges granted on it (this is an 11g feature specifically to support the preprocessor).
    #5) don't know

  • SSL certificates and Web Services Usage inside Oracle Database Questions!

We have implemented a specific business logic using PL/SQL for our client, so we open a file and process each line of this, doing something in the Database and also call a Web Services (Service1) using UTL_HTTP package. Service1 runs in a Windows 2008 Server in the DMZ as Database server.
Service1 is already working, and we can call the service from PL/SQL without troubles.
However, according with security client's policies they requires all Web services be consumed via https including Service1, so we must to follow the procedure established for Oracle in order to enable the calling of service1 via https from the Database.
Our client's DBA and IT Team are concerned about two subjects before to continue to follow the certificate installation:
         - SSL Certificates:
1- Can installed certificates in the Database put in risk the stability of the database?
2- Can installed certificates in the Database generate performance issues?
3- Can installed certificates reloading the Databases?
2- Can installed certificates in the Database generate security issues?
         - Web services:
1- Can web services calling from the Database put in risk the stability of the database?
2- Can web services calling from the Database generate performance issues?
3- Can web services calling from the Database generate security issues in the DMZ?
Could you please give us any clues, about the possible negative impact related with the SSL certificates and Web Services Usage inside Oracle Database, if it’s the case this impact exists?.
Those are the links describing the procedure mentioned above.

    DB: Oracle 9i.
Average number of lines in file: 300
    Periodicity: Twice at day.

    Thiago:
You are correct in that there should be no problem interacting with a Web service that has an HTTPS endpoint as long as you create a wallet and specify it when you make your UTL_HTTP calls, like the PayPal example.
I am not aware of a PL/SQL utility to create a XMLDsig Standard message, but if you find some Java source out there that does it, you may be able to follow a technique I used for a similar use case:

  • Oracle database Named User License Question

Oracle database Standard Edition ONE licensing has this requirement:
    Maximum of 2 socket server
    Minimum of 5 user licenses.
How are these 5 named user licenses calculated ?
    1) Does it depend on how many computers are connecting to the database ?
    2) Can we have application installed on 7 computers, but concurrently only 5 client computers will be connected to the database ?
    3) Are these named user plus licenses floating ?
