Noob questions regarding RAC database

Hi,
I've run a number of Oracle servers, but I'm just now labbing my first RAC server. Firstly, I'm having some inconsistencies with regards to logging in. Observe:
[oracle@rac1 ~]$ echo $ORACLE_SID
daradb
[oracle@rac1 ~]$ sqlplus system

In any previous experience, setting ORACLE_SID to daradb would mean that @daradb was unnecessary. What am I missing in this regard?
The second issue being, I don't ever seem to be able to logon using the standard OS authentication I'm used to:
[oracle@rac1 ~]$ sqlplus /@daradb
SQL*Plus: Release 11.1.0.6.0 - Production on Tue Jul 7 06:16:56 2009

ERROR:
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
It's not really an issue in the sense that I can still get in using system/password, but it's important I grasp what's going on before I proceed.
Background: Initially I couldn't logon at all. For some reason it appears that tnsnames.ora was installed by the dbca wizard under the ASM_HOME, instead of ORACLE_HOME. I copied it to the correct place to enable connection.

Thanks sybrand. You are correct about the naming assumption. Accordingly the following allows me to more specifically logon to the chosen server:
[oracle@rac1 daradb]$ sqlplus system@daradb1
or
[oracle@rac1 daradb]$ sqlplus system@daradb2
However using either of these SIDs doesn't appear to change this issue.
[oracle@rac1 daradb]$ ORACLE_SID=daradb1 sqlplus system

Enter password:
ERROR:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
It still requires the @daradb1.
Regarding permissions, I'm somewhat lost.
[oracle@rac1 daradb]$ id

  • Query Regarding Oracle Database Client

    Hello,
I'm new to ORACLE and Intented to become Oracle Developer and DBA. I've question regarding Oracle Database Client software.
I know that there is Oracle Database server software but what is this Oracle Database Client. Is there any need to Install it on client machine as client mostly access the database use application software mainly develope in Java or C# etc. So, what is it need.
and one more question regarding SQL *Plus. Is it client process or server process as I learnent that it is client process and if it is. Is it can be part of Oracle Database Client. and can we seperately install the Oracle Database Client on machine on which DB server is aslo Installed.
    Looking for reply.
    Regards,
    Danish Kamran

Certainly you are not mentioning the Oracle version, it is very important. Whenever you post a question reference the oracle version. There is a disk known as the oracle Client (10gR1, 10gR2 and 11gR1), this disk contains all required software to setup a client environment. If you are working with clients such as Java or C# you must have either the jdcb client driver (Jjava) or the ODBC software to access the database, this is included in the Oracle client disk.
    Instant Client
There are other options for the client, you can install the instant client, this option allows you to install only the drivers without the Oracle utilities, this is particular useful if you are deploying third party applications and you don't want to install the complete client disk.
    SQLPlus
SQL*Plus is a client application that runs on the client side, when you open a session it requests an Oracle server process to be executed on the server side. Once the session has been successfully setup then you can issue SQL commands from the client side. You should be aware that even if you launch SQL*Plus from the server side you will be working with two processes, one for the client and the second one for the oracle server. This connection mode is also known as dedicated server, but you should be aware that there is another connection mode known as shared server, I won't explain it since it already goes off topic.

  • Question about DBCA generate script o create RAC database 2 node cluster

Question about creating two node RAC database 11g after installing and configuration 11g clusterware. I've used DBCA to generate script to create a rac database. I've set
environment variable ORACLE_SID=RAC and the creating script creates instance of RAC1 and RAC2. My understanding is that each node will represent a node, however there should only be one database with a name of 'RAC'. Please advise

You are getting your terminology mixed up.
You only have one database. Take a look, there are one set of datafiles on shared storage.
You have 2 instances which are accessing one database.
Database name is RAC. Instance names are RAC1, RAC2, etc, etc.
Also, if you look at the listener configuration and if your tnsnames is setup properly then connecting to RAC will connect you to either one of the instances wheras connecting to RAC1 will connect you to that instance.

  • Question regarding Polling data from database using DB Adapters in BPEL

    Hi,
I have the following question regarding Polling data from database using DB Adapters in BPEL -
If I am selecting data from multiple tables/view to ultimately generate hierarchical xml document, is there a way that I specify polling all of these tables/views. Is polling limited only to one table/view?
    Thanks
    Ravi

    Hi Ravi,
your question seems to have been answered for the question of polling a set of tables with one as the root, and getting back a hierarchical xml representing multiple related tables.
However you can also poll for changes to both the root table and its related tables. Not sure if this was your question or the one already answered. If the former please check out the sample

  • Questions regarding creating the database

    Hi there,
From the previous posting, http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=640415&tstart=15 someone gave me the "formula" of connecting to the database:
java.sql.Connection  conn   =  java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost/name_of_DB","user","password") Now just couple of questions regarding the formula :
    1) Obviously, if I want the name of my DB, then I will have to create my DB. Can somebody please tell me the protocol of creating the DB? And where do I create this DB (i.e can I create it anywhere in my application)? Or is it that I have to create a new database using MySQL itself?
    2) After creating a database, I would like to create multiple tables containing different datas. Is it possible to place the code creating these tables anywher in the application I want?
Your ideas or advice would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    Young

    1) Yes, you'll have to create the database using MySQL.
    2) You sure can once you have the database created with the proper rights assigned to your user. You can put the code anywhere you want but you may want to put it somewhere where it only ran once like on install if you're doing a standalone app.

  • RAC database rman duplication question

When I refresh a RAC test system from production, I use RMAN duplicate.  My overall steps are:
    backup prod using rman
    on test system:
in the init.ora/spfile change parameter cluster_database=false
    shutdown test db
    startup nomount
use rman duplicate to restore/recover the datafiles
    alter database open resetlogs
    open the database
    shutdown the db
    in the init.ora/spfile set cluster_database=true
startup the db with srvctl and it starts up the 5 node RAC - srvctl start database -d TEST
My colleague runs RCONFIG after the database restore and after reading through the Oracle docs, I am not sure whether that is required or not.  I thought RCONFIG was to convert a single instance to RAC --which technically is what we are doing....but I thought this was used only when creating the TEST RAC database for the first time, and after everything was configured, you could refresh without running RCONFIG.   Anybody have any recommendations/knowledge on this I would really appreciate it.  My colleague does not want to run RCONFIG if its not required, but if I am missing some finer point in my method I don't want to say you don't need to run RCONFIG. But I will say, I have cloned RAC for years without RCONFIG.    Thanks everyone.
    -Lori

As you said, rconfig is the tool for converting a single instance database to cluster database.
Rconfig creates the configuration for a cluster database, updates the spfile with the necessary changes, adds new redo threads and undo tablespaces for the additional instances.
When you duplicate a database that already has these, it is not necessary to run rconfig.

  • Question on RAC

    Hi friends,
I have got this question from customer regarding Oracle 11G R2 RAC.
The customer have stated a preference for configuring the Oracle RAC nodes so that, in a two node system, the first node bears all the update load, whereas the second RAC node would have connections that are read-only. The two nodes would still operate as failovers for one another. The reason for this , they stated was to reduce network traffic between the nodes to coordinate transactions and locking. They have asked for this configuration as 'one update node and one read-only node' / a primary update node and a secondary read-only node .
We have thought about implementing this configuration for our two applications as follows
    Application features
    Application 1 - which performs regular updates,heavy transactions,long running reports et - schema 1
Application 2 - performs smalled updates and small reads. - schema 2
Application 1 can point to node 1 of this RAC and application 2 to node 2 ( using node affinity ).When any of the node fails , the client connections will fail over to surviving node.
I would like to get some recommendations on this approach from experts.
    1) Do you think the above approach using node affinity is a good approach , ie pinning one schema in one node with one database for a two instance(node) RAC ?
    2) Any documents / reference to configure this approach in RAC ?
    3) Is there any other way to achieve the requirement put by the customer ?
    4) If the above said nodes are in two data centres, Will it be a recommended approach ? I think these two nodes should be in same data centre.
    5) If we configure Load balancing ( in normal RAC or in the setup mentioned above) then that would take considerable network b/w ?
OS is RHEL 5.4 on 64 bit.
Please share your view on this.
    Thanks ,
    SSN

    1) Do you think the above approach using node affinity is a good approach , ie pinning one schema in one node with one database for a two instance(node) RAC ?In RAC , database remains same. So all schemas can be accessed from all nodes.
You can configure RAC services and then you can use one service for the updates and the other one can be used for read only application.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e16795/hafeats.htm#BABJJJAG
    4) If the above said nodes are in two data centres, Will it be a recommended approach ? I think these two nodes should be in same data centre. Why do you want to put RAC nodes in different data centers ?
You can use Oracle extended RAC in that case.

  • Uninstall Oracle 11gr2 RAC database in grid infrastructure

    Hi all,
After several attempt to install my Oracle database RAC with grid infrastructure, i want now to do a fresh installation as i have attempted 3 times and now i have all the procedure on installing the database and RAC.
Actually i have installed it correctly but now i want to cleanup my server and remove all oracle installation directory and do a fresh installation.
My question is what is the procedure to uninstall an Oracle RAC database and Clusterware with grid infrastucture and cleanup oracle base installation.
    The architecture is:
GRID and clusterware: Oracle grid 11gR2
    Database: Oracle database 11gR2
    Database and grid storage: ASM
    OS: linux centos 6
    Thank you.
    Raluce.

The deinstallation of Oracle GI could be not so easy thing to do, because it contains many components one should be aware of.  The proper deinstall is important because it will safe you from many issues with next install on these servers
In general we need to be sure that:
    1. all sowftware stopped properly
    2. removed from oraInventory
    3. binaries removed
    4. /etc/oracle cleared
    5. ocr and votes cleared using dd
    6. /etc/oratab updated
    7. .profile updated
    8. init.d files in /etc/ cleard
Usually its recommended to use deconfigure scripts, if they fails for some reason, the manual procedure should be followed.
How to Deconfigure/Reconfigure(Rebuild OCR) or Deinstall Grid Infrastructure [ID 1377349.1]
How to Deinstall Oracle Clusterware Home Manually [ID 1364419.1]
As general recommendation its good idea to save your crs configuration for future reference.

  • Separate table and index data in RAC database

    Hi Experts,
Our database is Oracle11g RAC database. I need your expertise on this
Do we need to retain the table and index data in two different tablespaces for performance perspective in RAC database too?
Please share your practical experience…Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Richard

    g777 wrote:
In my opinion, if there is striping implemented then performance shouldn't degrade even if the index and table blocks are in one tablespace. Exactly.. striping is NOT a good idea at tablespace level as a tablespace is a logical storage device. It is very difficult to stripe comprehensively/correctly at that level, if not impossible.
Striping is a function of the actual storage system and need to happen at physical level. A proper RAID0 implementation.
So the question about multiple tablespaces for a performance increase should not be about striping - but about issues such as data management, block sizes, transportable tablespaces and so on.
Thus my question (at the OP) - what performance problems are expected and are these relevant to the number of tablespaces?

  • Using Oracle 11gR1 OID to control access to 11gR2 RAC database ?

I have a two 11gR2 RAC Node database that I would like to implement Oracle 11gR1 OID to manage all access to the RAC database.
Should I install and configure Oracle 11gR1 OID into the same RAC database to control access to the RAC database? Is this the appropriate approach?
Please share your ideas... I couldn't make it to Openword to ask this type of question.

    Hi,
I think there is some confusion here. OID doesnt protect your database. All OID is doing is taking the authentication of the user and authorization (privileges) of the user to OID and out of the database. This way you can centralize the management of all user accounts in one place and not worry about it in the database. This is helpful only if you have many databases. If you have a very small number of databases and small number of user accounts, then OID is not really buying you anything. The best practices is published in the oracle docs. Just that you have to read a lot to figure it all out. Here are some info from our installation.
    1. weblogic and oid application is installed on a application server
    2. Repository database is a independant database (not shared with other apps) in a shared RAC cluster.
    3. Replication (OID application replication) setup between a primary oid server and a secondary oid server in the DR site
    4. Load balancer configured to point to the primary server and if primary server is not available, point the connection to secondary server
    5. DIP configured to pull all users and groups from active directory
    6. Password filter installed on all DC's to capture passwords and ship it to oid.
    7. Users creation, modification, deletion, expiry, etc., is all controlled on active directory.
    8. Database registered with OID for user authentication and authorization
For protecting you data, you will need to use additional security methods/products like :
    1. Database vault (to prevent privileged users from operating on the data)
    2. Database auditing
    3. Fine-grained access control
    4. table level policies
    5. Fine-grained auditing (column level)
    6. Audit vault (to consolidate all audit records to a central place for auditors to classify and research each audit event)
    7. operational/process to enforce security.
    Good luck :-).
    Regards,
    Shaji.

  • Storage related question for RAC

    Hi Gurus,
I have a question here about the storage design. My company has 2 node Oracle RAC already setup on Linux with 11g for clusterware, ASM and 10g for database(for application support we are using still 10g for database). This RAC is dedicated for one database and shared by several applications.
Now, we decided to add two more nodes and additional storage to it.
The existing storage uses EMC SAN DMX 4574 (raw partitions) disks. And the additional storage disks provided by our storage team are EMC SAN DMX 3752.
Is it possible to combine these two different DISK (different series from same vendor) into one single storage sub system visible to entire RAC Database? All the 4 nodes will be used for the same database and application. Its a production system so we wanted to confirm and proceed further as we dont have a test scenario.
Shall we connect these different disks to the switches so that ASM can see all the disks at once and can be used for database?
    Please advise.

Its a >production system so we wanted to confirm and proceed further as we dont have a test scenario.First of all, You have to ask the OS support team in order to see if there is any kind of problem mixing it. I don't think it would be a problem, but as you don't have any test environemnt, You'd better ask them.
For the ASM side, it's not a problem, You can work with this kind of configuration. In fact I have a couple of environemnt using this configuration. I'm using a expensive storage with a better performance to critical tablespaces, and a lower cost storage to put historical data and other kind of data that are not accessed every time.
Shall we connect these different disks to the switches so that ASM can see all the disks at once and can be used for database? Well,
As I told before, I don't think it would be a problem, but again... You should ask the OS support team. For the ASM side, You shouldn't mix disks with diferent behaviour in the same diskgroup, You should use disks with the same size and similar/equal performance characteristics. As ASM balances the I/O over the disks in a ASM diskgroup, it's important to configure in this way in order to avoid performance problems.
    Hope it helps,
    Cerreia

  • Anybody using 11g RAC Database with OIM 9.1.0.2?

    Hi,
We have poor performance problems with 11g RAC Database with OIM 9.1.0.2.
It looks like the issue could be because of RAC Ccluster.
Anybody using 11g RAC Database with OIM 9.1.0.2?
If so, What is the JDBC Driver r u using? Also what App Server (Weblogic or OAS etc) ?
    Appreciate your input.
    Regards
    Vijay Chinnasamy

We are using weblogic 10.3. And I am sorry to tell you that we are yet to move to production.
We are planning to have Database in RAC, so i just thought of taking inputs from you.
can you tell me under what operations you face the poor performance issue?
For us the max no. of users in production is around 6k. So I am wondering how this RAC availability will affect the performance.
    Thanks for sharing your inputs.
