"Normal" Network Usage for MacMini Server

I have a 2011 MMS with a Corei7 proc and 16 GB of ram.  I also have approximately 30 workstations - all mac.  Everything is running Mavericks (server is running server 3.0).
All of my users run network accounts.  I've noticed what I would consider substantial network traffic from each machine directly to the server on port 445 (I use SMB home shares).  Using the "nettop" command, I determined this traffic is mostly from "kernel_task" and on the low side is around 8 GB for a couple of days, upwards of 80 GB on some machines for a couple of days.  The machines generally appear to run fine and there is no significant CPU usage.  Sometimes, a machine will occasionally "forget" to delete a file on logout and I get some funky errors until I clean it up (a lock file for firefox or the .mcmlx file)
The question is, is this a "normal" (i know relative...) amount of traffic?  It seems that whenever I open safari or firefox, the "kernel_task" network usage starts to climb rapidly.
I guess I am concerned that this traffic could be causing some issues with the server so that it is "missing things" on logout of each user.  I did not have any of these issues prior to Mavericks and the SMB updates.  I previously used AFP, however when I use AFP firefox (required for a special internet school management application) goes crazy.

There was a big issue in school Servers (10.6 and previous) where the computers were almost all Network Users, often operating from computer clusters (not one user per computer).
For Network Users:
/Users/user-short_name/Library/Caches ...
... is a file on the SERVER. That is where cached firefox and safari stuff is sent! [from the Web to the WorkStation, copied to the cache on the Server, copied back to the workstation when the User changes pages, and on and on. It beats up your network, while the drive on the workstation is nearly idle. Some Admins advocated turning off Browser Caching entirely as their solution.]
WorkGroup Manager eventually provided a work-around in an additional MCX manifest that could be added to any user:
com.apple.MCXRedirector.manifest ...
that had several different options for ways to deal with the Caches. The most popular was to delete the Cache in the User's Home folder, and link to:
/private/tmp/short-User_name/Library/caches ...
...This folder is on the WorkStation where the User is logged in, and will be inaccessible or deleted by the time the next user logs in at that computer.
There are articles online that contain recipes for converting the MCX manifests to use them as Profile manager xml files to support that feature indirectly, but I have not seen direct support for the feature mentioned as yet.

    Hi,
Can any one tell me what is network requirements for SQL Server replication.
I have successfully configured the replication on LAN with active directory but I am unable to configure it on WAN.
Can anyone tell me how WAN can be configured for sql server replication.
Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

    Hi Muhammad,
In addition to Prashanth’s post, please also check the following things  to optimize SQL Server replication with a WAN link.
    • Initialize the Subscriber from a backup.
Publishing the execution of stored procedures as opposed to replicating each operation performed by the stored procedure.
    Leveraging Subscription Streams.

  • Considering a Dell U2711 for MacMini Server

    Hi All,
I am planning to buy a MacMini Server to go with my Dell U2711 Display.
I am a bit confused regarding the means of connecting the Display to MacMini for running at 2560 x 1440 resolution.
Apple tells on MacMini specifications page, that output through HDMI is limited to 1920-by-1200.
That said, I am left with the "Thunderbolt" way to achive the native resolution of 2560 x 1440, right?
So, what cable should I use to connect the display through thunderbolt port?
Some articles suggest using the so called "Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI" Cable to do that, but then isn't is a misleading naming for a thunderbolt cable?
I would expect something like a "Thunderbolt to Dual Link DVI" cable.
    Thanks!

Iam buying this model, have tou tried 1080p videos external monitors anf full hd flash videos from vimeo?
    please let me know

Just though I should fill in a bit here, as I have now bought this laptop and running Arch 64bit on it. So if any other users are considering this laptop, here are a few lines about it:
I have it up and running with LUKS disk encryption, everything works fine so far. I'm running XFCE with just a minor problem that the bottom panel is kinda blinking 3 or 4 times right after boot. Havn't tested webcam nor bluetooth, but sound and everything else seems to work fine.
Two of my biggest problems were to get the wifi up and running and to get an acceptable performance when viewing videos in full screen. As for the wifi; just me not understanding that I needed a kernel module AND a firmware.. (If someone wants to fill me in on why we need a firmware AND a kernel module/ driver, I'd be glad.) I installed the iwlwifi-5000-ucode without knowing I also needed the iwlagn module too. After that was fixed, I am now using network manager with no problems.
I have also had some problem with the Radeon 3670. The performance was bad in full screen videos when I used the xf86-video-radeonhd. (I followed arch wiki). It didn't help to use vide-ati neither, and no settings in the xorg.conf did fix my problem. I also noticed that DRI was failing in xorg.log. After alot of trying I decided to try the git-versions which are found in the AUR. I'm happy to say that I can now watch 720 (the only video resolution I have tried yet) with acceptable quality
All in all, I'm quite happy with the computer so far. A bit warm maybe. Oh,  and the screen (full HD version) is SOO nice :-)

  • "it's always DNS" - Need Help setting network/DNS settings for MacMini Serv

Well, I must admit defeat and ask for help. I've set up an Xsan or 2, but for the life of me cannot set up my mac mini server. My basic two problems seem to be these:
    1) Service Order in System Preferences/Network
I want to run my private LAN through Ethernet, using a 10.1.17. IP range, and use my Airport Extreme Base Station (Technically a Time Capsule) for the Public ISP 192.168.1 DHCP service. Cannot get both to work. The only way I can get the server to work and to be able to login using Open Directory is to either set the Ethernet as Primary for both my client and server, in which case there is no internet service AT ALL for either. I have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with either DNS or a few extra DNS entries in the ethernet or airport categories, but for the life of me I cannot find the right combination. Is there any way to have BOTH Ethernet LAN and Airport internet service?
    2) Related to the first question, I think, is that my local FQDN (not registered, just meant for internal LAN use only right now) and DNS name only show up to my client computer in Server Admin, Directory Utility, Workgroup Manager if I DISABLE my airport card. Otherwise, they come up as <servername>.local and not the FQDN <servername>.editdog.com, and I cannot login using OD.
    3) I'm not sure what happend to the Binding I used to have to do in OSX Server 10.5, but maybe that's the issue? I have the Peachpit OSX Server Essentials Book, and it's been less than helpful.
    Any ideas out there?

  • Various network setups for media serving and backups

Are there any good sites, blog posts, etc that show different home network configurations with a Time Capsule, external HDs and Macs for handling backups and media serving? Right now I have a simple Setup where my TC backs up my MBP. I also have a couple externals HDs w a lot of music and video that's not in my iTunes library on the MBP, the HD of which is at capacity. I know I want to be able to easily access all of that content on my MBP, AppleTV, iPhone, iPad. I also want to have a good backup solution (possibly even a backup of the backup for redundancy). I just don't know the simplest way to do it and haven't found a good resource to see the alternatives and/or pros/cons of different configurations. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Newbie Question - Domestic/Home Applications for MacMini Server

I'm new to Mac Server but have just purchased a MacMini with Snow Leopard Server. Has anyone considered the benefits of running Mac Server in a domestic (home/family) situation. We have at least 3 iMac's at home and 2 MacBook Air's connecting to our home internet system (frequently).

    Mark,
I use a Mac OSX server at home. We have two iMacs, two MacBooks, one MacPro (HackPro) and an older G3. I find it very useful in that all the user accounts are network home accounts which means each of the kids can log onto any machine and get their desktop and resources. Also, backing up user files, including centrally stored music, is very easy as all the directories are stored on a RAID drive attached to the server. It is very easy to back that up to Amazon S3 or Rackspace. Parental controls are also very easy to implement on the server in Work Group Manager - much easier than on individual machines.

  • Network security for EP server

    Hi,
If i have a portal server which talks to SAPR3 systems how should the network security be achieved, if the portal has to open to internet?
where all will the firewall come into picture? How many DMZs to be there? Is there any SAP recommendation document on this...any info would be of great help
    regards,
    Sujesh

    Hi Sujesh,
Normally SAP recommend (on their courses) that you have a reverse proxy in the DMZ, then a firewall, then portal, then a firewall, then backend SAP etc.
However, it also depends on what you already have network architecture wise.

  • Network priority for the server

Hello, I have one computer working as a server/router (two NIC's) and two windows machines in the LAN. All traffic to the internet goes through the server.
Problem is, that I have few services on the server machine that require a good ping. Sometimes on the windows machines I may end up using the entire download speed (e.g. when downloading something from steam) and thus it may effect (lag) the services on the server. I'd like to give top priority to the server when it comes to downloading/uploading.
I already found out that I can do traffic shaping with shorewall: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ro … _shorewall
Can I use shorewall just to do the traffic shaping and nothing else? I'm already using UFW to forward traffic. Does it conflict with shorewall or require some sort of special configuration to work?

I recommend you use plain iptables, so you can debug it.
Here's my traffic shaping, and an alternative method.

  • Normal memory usage?

    Hi...
Could anyone tell me what should be the normal memory usage of the server
    just after startup?
I only have a few ejbs deployed and just after startup, my server memory
jumps to 150Mb.. so I'm wondering if this is normal because it looks to me
    like a lot of memory...
I used to work with another application server with the same ejbs deployed
and even after several days up, the server process never took more han
75-80Mb of memory.. Weblogic is taking like twice this amount just after
startup... maybe my tuning is wrong.. is there anythng that I could do to
    lower the memory usage?

    Hi Mathieu,
Generally there is no hard rule defined for all app servers for
how much memory it should use after startup. Why whould you
need to lower the memory usage? Do you have any specific
problem with the digits you've got?

  • I want to use a headless MacMini Server as a webhost for four sites.

I am considering trying the MacMini server to use as a webhost. I have a comcast business account with 5 IP's. It's an extreme connection speed package.
    My sites would be:
    2 Joomla! CMS sites,
    1 WordpressMU Site,
    1 SugarCRM site.
I am looking for something an idiot could install and manage. I'm using a hosting company right now, but would like more control of my OS.
I don't like the fact that Apple doesn't include phpMyAdmin as a standard package with Snow leopard.
I installed the above scripts on my macbook pro through MAMP and MAMP Pro, but all I can get is local access. The public cannot access my sites folder (regular snow leopard). So, I was told that I need snow leopard server to accomplish what I want to do. Can anyone help me figure out what I need, and how it's done?
    Walt

It does sound like a simple port forwarding thing.
Do take care with that Comcast account. If my experience is any indication you will not get the advertised speed. If you read the agreement it is only guaranteed for the first few kilobytes or so of any transmission and then backs down to normal speeds afterward.
Comcast will also do you a "favor" and turn the firewall on by default in the supplied modem/router. You have to call them and have them turn it off if it interferes with anything.

  • Use MacMini server for windows apps and save for windows files ?

My question : Office equiped mixed computers , aslo Windows and Mac,
Could we use MacMini server for both machines, working by windows apps and / or to save and work with windows files on MacMini server  and with Mac as well?
We woud use it for normal office work and get it by internet from other places as well
windows apps: merchandising, invoice, word, excel, pictures editing, Outlook Express + the Mac apps
    thnx ,

In general what you can do is: in OS X, use Windows in virtualization (aka emulation), as a "virtual machine" with VMWare Fusion, Parallels, or Oracle VM Virtual box.
That way you have both operating system open side by side without having to reboot into one or the other operating system.
Not sure whether you need a Mac Mini Server per se to do that, I do that with my MacBook Pro for instance. But the server would help since it has a quad-core CPU (more cores that you can dedicate to the virtual macine), and you can put the virtual machine on the second harddrive for better disk access performance. Was there some particular reason you were thinking of the Mini Server -- do you want to use server side Windows apps?
Again I have that setup on my MacBook Pro using VMWare Fusion with an XP virtual machine. In the Windows, I only use Office 2003 and some company apps that are Windows only. With Fusion (and I'm sure the other apps can do it as well) you can set a "shared" folder so both Windows and Lion will see the contents of it for reading and writing. I believe with Fusion you can also do your entire Home directory, but I prefer to limit it to a single shared "work" folder.

  • Small Office Network Solution for Final Cut Server - Proxy Storage Etc.

    Hi,
I haven't been able to find any answers for this question by googling, So I would love if anyone here had some advice. I have the 10 License version of Final Cut Studio with 5 clients at the moment. I would like to set-up our office in the most effective way, however we are a non-profit organization, so we are working with a limited budget.
My question is, does anyone know of any networking solutions for Proxy Storage and Media storage, that wont bottleneck, but is not as high budget/high tech as using an Xserve/XSan system?
Right now we would be looking at running Final Cut Server off of our 24inch Intel IMac (Going to beef up the RAM). We have a Gigabit Switch, 4 more intel machines running final Cut pro, and a direct attached Drobo for Media Storage. I know this is not an Ideal set-up, but it's what I have to work with right now. So, I'm looking for any kinds of tips and tricks to make this set-up work for us, and am looking at purchasing either a Network Attached or iscsI storage system for the Proxy Storage.

  • Remote Server Admin not working from outside of network for 1 server

Our company recently changed ISPs and I had to change our two 10.4 server's IP addresses. We have a mail server (intel xserve) and a file/web server (quicksilver g4). Both servers have two network cards in them. The problem is two-fold:
1- I can successfully manage the Xserve machine locally on our network and from my home. However, I can only manage the Quicksilver g4 server locally. Any kind of external access is not even acknowledged.
2- I'm not sure if I missed any steps when changing IP addresses for these server-based computers. Also, I'm not sure if I correctly set our dns names to the correct IP address.
For some background, this is the exact IP update process I used for each server:
Quicksilver G4 (file/web server) - Installed network card #2 and configured it with the new Public IP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. In Server Admin I set our website to use the new public IP address. (network card #2 has no firewall device in between it and the internet.)
Then, I configured the default network card #1 to a static, yet private IP address that's behind our DLink firewall device with the rest of our network.
Intel Xserve (e-mail server) - Network card #1 was the only one setup before our network change. It had a static, public IP address. When we changed ISPs, I configured network card #2 to the new static, public IP address supplied to us by the new ISP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. This new IP address is where all email traffic currently gets pointed to. (All mail is successfully sent and delivered.) Until our former ISP gets shutdown, I still have network card #1 configured to the older static public IP address. After the old ISP is shut off, I plan on changing network card #1 to a static, private address.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What should I check in AD?  I am by no means an expert with AD.
Yes, I am using the same client OS.
I am talking about RDP over the internet, like from home to the office.  We have a static IP assigned to the router from ISP.  A static internal IP assigned to the server on the LAN.  And the router port forwards 3389 to the assigned IP.
It was working fine before we reinstalled Server 2012.  These are the steps I took when reinstalling:
    1. format drive and install OS
    2. rename the server
    3. install SQL server
    4. Install TFS and SharePoint
    5. Add Active Directory role and promote to Domain Controller
    6. Add domain users
    7. Enable remote access on the server and add users to remote access list

  • Macmini Server for Mentoring program

I am in the development stages of setting up a mentoring program. I have been looking at the macmini server as an option but have a some questions in regards of ease of use versus a linux setup.
I will be using apple computers along with ipad for my coordinators.
I see that I can host a web site, but will it be able to host a vbulletin forum as well?
I am pretty proficient when it comes to software, but have not really messed around with linux much. tried ubuntu and liked it but it seems odd coming from mac osx and windows. How user friendly is SL server edition campared to Ubuntu server in regards to setup, maintaining and management. I do not have the budget to have an IT person on staff.
The server will primary be used to host website, forum, and file sharing. I like the integration of ical and the mail server. Any advise and suggestions appreciated.

I've never setup a Ubuntu server but a Mac mini server is very simple, use your 90 days of free phone support as much as you can. Or see what that new Joint Venture thing is that they launched the other day.
The Web Server is good and the Mail and iCal integration I can't remember if a Forum comes as one of the easy setup site options so thats a bit more work under the hood.
The Applecare gives you phone support for a very good price cant see you getting an option like that on Linux, both have good online forums for assistance as well.
The applecare doesn't cover command line though just GUI which probably means a vbulletin install would not be covered it you ran into trouble (so online forums for that one).
For the price and its abilities IMO you'd be mad not to go with the Mini, especially with other macs and ipads.
