Nudging a Windows user to Mac, but with certain requirements
A co-worker was asking me about moving from Windows to Mac. I explained that I had done so about four years ago and was quite content with my decision.
He had a question that gave me pause, though. He currently works on a Windows laptop and a Windows desktop. He says that he uses an option in Windows that automatically synchronizes all the files on his two machines. This way he can work on either one and when he connects them to his network, they both sync up so that they each have exactly the same and most recent updates.
He also has both machines encrypted so that should they be stolen or lost, the data would be useless to anyone.
I have purchased Synk and it works for my needs, but I don’t use FileVault anymore as it caused problems for me a couple of years ago.
So, my question: Is there a comparable mechanism in the Apple OS that will let him set up two Macs, work on either one when they’re apart, synchronize his data when they’re connected, and do all this with encryption?
I know there are probably other third-party apps to accomplish this, but when problems arise it’s always hard to know who to go to in order to find solutions.

There are a few options. I don't use File Vault, but I have a friend who does and it very satisfied with they way it encrypts his data. Do some searching in this forum for a variety of opinions.
You seem already to use some syncing software, and there are others to look at. I used one once the name of which escapes me, but it worked well. If I can recall what it was I will post an update.
But I would recommend that your friend considers using .Mac if he wants to sync data between two Macs.
If he activates the iDisk sync option then all his iDisk is synced from one Mac to another via the internet. I use it myself and I find it very useful and reliable. See what else .Mac offers in regards to syncing by going to

I feel sure in saying that this far exceeds your friend's experience on his PC.
.Mac syncing has been improved and extended with Leopard, although it seems to have been overshadowed by the more prominent features of the OS.

OS X can natively read NTFS of Windows, but not write to it.
Windows can't read or write to HFS+ of OSX, and that's a good thing from a security standpoint.
Ideally if you share files between operating systems you should have a FAT/MSDOS formated USB key or hard drive. (exFAT external drive if any of your files are over 4GB in size) both these formats are universal for OS X or Windows.
If you install software into Windows and OS X to read each others formats, then you have to pay to update/upgrade it deal with headaches.
If you swtich between Windows and OS X a lot, don't need full hardware performance for Windows, you may consider installing virtual machine software like VMFusion or Parallels which can take a copy of your Windows in Bootcamp and place it into OS X as a file then run that copy of Windows in a window in OS X like so.
Advantage here is you run most of your light weight Windows programs like this at the same time as OS X.
Benefit is you can run just about any Windows or Linux version and OSX server editions (not client versions)
Bootcamp only allows Windows 7, that's it now.
You'll also be interested in two fre pieces of software, Carbon Copy Cloner and Winclone on macupdate.com.
CCC clones OS X partition and Winclone clones the Bootcamp partition. Valuable for you.

I dont understant why you can run windows on a mac, but not mac on windows. Any help. I would purchase OS X Mountain Lion if you gave me a way.
Microsoft builds software to run on other companies' hardware, pretty much exclusively if you don't count the long line of failed devices: Zune, Windows phone, and now the Surface.
Apple builds hardware. They support that hardware with their own operating system. It is designed to run only on their very tightly integrated hardware. Trying to write software for the plethora of crap being sold would be a failing proposition and would divert resources away from the great software they provide for their hardware customers.
The hardware and software are very well engineered to provide the best possible experience.
If you want to experience a Mac, buy a Mac. -
I'm trying to install windows 8 on mac, but after partitioning and restarting, it stucks on blue logo and i waited 20 minutes but nothing happened, what can i do, please help.
I think there's some remmants left over from when Apple transferred stuff over. We can try a quick fix, but if that doesn't work, I think the only option is to clean install OSX and then install Windows.
open disk utility, confirm that you only have 1 partition (mac journaled)
restart and PRAM reset
open disk utility and repair permissions twice
restart boot camp assistant
Does it work?
If not, I would boot holding command+R, choose disk utility from the menu and completely erase your HD (formatting it as mac journaled again). Then, install OSX on this HD. Once OSX is installed, don't copy your files over from the backup yet. Instead, start boot camp assistant and see if you can get Windows installed. You can copy back your other files after we get Windows installed. -
My iWeb site can not be opened by many windows users only macs.
My iWeb site should open for all platforms = How to do?
I am also confused about compatability of my hard work and new iWeb sites (I love the iWeb App yet i got 4 family members all in different locations in the USA who run windows ....tell me that they could not open the web site which I announced via email.) Other Mac users did reply back saying it opened fine.
Please send me a way to enable my work to open or if u must please tell me if the windows users need a RSS Reader and or .Mac accounts and or iTunes etc etc ...I wish to feel like the work I do on my Mac is compatable for all. As is Apple continues to isolate others and will include others only if they switch....
Hey Macs are great so why not attract others with a platform that just includes all. Noone wants to enter a beautiful garden if the path to it is filled with thorns and at entrance others find a closed gate which reads You are not welcome.... that aint right and I'm a dumb bell old Dad who thought finally I was creating a web page that all could visit.

I do agree that should not have to be a consideration for any users so i agree that it would be great if Apple could allow simplicity to run seemlessly.
I have had this problem since Homepage, and here is
what has worked for me. I send out the link, and
then for PC users I send the link with "<" after the address (without quotation
marks. e.g., <http://site.com>).
I also put a note that if that doesn't work, to just
copy and paste the link into a browser. With that I
have only had 1 person say they still can't open.
Everyone else gets it to work.
It's a lot to do and seems like a hassle, but you get
used to it.

To Windows Users Considering Mac Pro
When I first was considering a mac pro ( I have just bought one a week ago - end of june 2011 )
My first few posts prior to purchasing on here were probably very defensive and pushing for reasoning.
Only after purchasing do I understand why I got the responses I did.
I dont want to say that MAC is God like.
But its close to it
So having been a windows user for so long and just switched over ( yes it did cost a lot but its worth it! )
Here is what I have found useful
1, The speed that it loads and shuts down is just **** dreamy! Its the way computers should run! ( windows is horrific compared on that ) That was always my biggest peeve with windows, it took forever loading its crap in the background
2. The quality is incredible. Really solid built, super thin! ( I actually cant stop looking at this **** notebook....)
3. Its packed with stunning applications that you would have to pay tons of money for on windows
4. I love the magnetic charger, that prevents tons of issues that regular notebooks have with the inside part becoming loose after a few years of pulling out and putting in the cable.
5. The trackpad, swipingin, clicking, tapping... **** its beautiful!
6. Their magic mouse ( i got that too ) is just magic!
7. Everything is so much more organized, streamline and cleaner ( great for business )
I am sure i will find many more things, but for now... if you are thinking of getting one and cant understand why they are so **** expensive.
There are lots of reasons why. I wont give you the speal about BMW or such as I know there are lots of great PCs out there, but it really cant be compared its in a class of its own and once you have it... well i honestly cant see myself going back
In fact... next in line is replacing my desktop ( but i may wait till next year for that )

As they say once you have mac... you wont go back!Actually, they're not so expensive, considered from the standpoint of value. I purchased new computers, but the old ones - one of which I've kept close tabs on since its OS9 days - still work fine. There are a few excellent Windows laptops, true, but every time a friend has used one, he says it died after three or four years.
Unibody construction and the '09 trackpad changed it for me, and maybe Spotlight. -

What can I do?Does the download give you an EXE file, or an ISO file? If it's an ISO file, you have options, but if it's an EXE file, then you have to have Windows to run it.

Unless you purchased OS X Mountain Lion with that Apple ID, you can't. You have to use the Apple ID used to purchase OS X Mountain Lion, or you won't be able to install Mac OS X -
Can I copy files – but with certain restrictions?
I have just finished a large project, the archives of which involves about 5000 "base" files, stored on about 80 CDs and 50 DVDs, involving about 50,000 files in total. Each of the "base" files may have had up to 30 incremental versions. i.e. a certain text file may have undergone revision 23 times, and each revision was saved and archived to (probably) a different disk, with a different suffix – a, b, c and so on. But sometimes the suffix didn't change even though the file was edited. I might have done a bit more dust removal on an image and just overwrote the old file (already archived), and so the new one was archived on a different disk.
I now have 130 disks from which I would like to extract all the files and collapse them to one large archive that will probably span about 20 disks by the time I delete some files not needed. That way I can easily search for all versions of, say, GB097, by going to the particular DVD that has the "G" files on it. Up would come:

GB097a
GB097b
GB097b-1
GB097b-2
GB097c
... and so on.
This is what I would like to do:
1. Grab the first archive disk, open every folder, and copy all the files to the one folder on a hard drive.
2. Open the second disk and repeat step (1), but with these two provisos.
(a) If a file is identical to a previously copied file (maybe I archived it twice), the file isn't copied. However...
(b) If a file has the same name as a previously copied file, but the data within that file is different (i.e. I removed some dust from an image file, but left the name unchanged), I'd like that file to be copied with a numbered suffix, the same way that Trash treats identically named files.

Can't boot into Windows after splitting Mac partition with Disk Utility
Hi everyone,
I installed Windows 8 with BOOTCAMP, creating a large 871 GB partition with a smaller 127 GB partition for Windows. After installing Windows, I then went back to Disk Utility to shrink the Mac partition and add two new partitions, one for storage and another blank, hoping to use it to install Linux into one day.
I did that, and now Windows doesn't boot. A Windows blue screen tells me I need to use the Windows DVD to repair it.
I tried to use Disk Utility to delete the two new partitions I made and grow the Mac partition back to the max size of 871 GB. But it doesn't let me do this. The Disk Utility log doesn't report an error and thinks it worked but the partition stays the same size. However if I make the partition a little smaller, like 870 GB then it works. I'm wondering if the Recovery partition is hiding there and preventing me from fully expanding the Mac partition.
What can I do?

I can boot into OS X just fine so if possible, I'd like to avoid reformatting everything. If you know of a way I can add more than 2 partitions with OS X and Boot Camp, please let me know. As far as I know, rEFInd can recognize more than two partitions, but I don't think it can edit partitions on a GPT / hybrid MBR system. Or am I wrong? -
Windows 7 Recognizes Touch But With Wrong Properties
My Sony VAIO recognizes the iPod on "My Computer", but as an 8GB with no files. My Touch is a 16GB. I cannot transfer apps purchased from the PC to the Touch.
I have used all the diagnostics, and everything is fine except the connectivity test says, "no iPod found".
Any suggestions?Some days after posting here, I asked this question at another Canon website, and learned that in circumstances similar to mine described here, Canon recommends that the MP560 "be connected to your Windows computer then shared to your Macintosh", rather than, as in my case, having the MP560 connected to the Mac and then shared with the Windows computers.

Can see Windows PCs from Mac, but can't see (and access) Mac from PCs
Yesterday, I ran into a strange problem which I'm not able to figure out.
I share an office with some engineers, who have their computer environment (server, network), all running Windows (XP and Vista on the PCs, Windows 2003 for the server).
Within that environment, I have 2 PCs (both XP) and an iBook G4 (Leopard 10.5.4.). I have also a printer (Epson Laser), which is connected to the office network, and an Airport Extreme Base Station.
Until last week, I could connect from my PCs to my iBook (wirelessly), and from the iBook I could connect to my PCs, the server, and via the server print on my printer (again, all wirelessly).
Over the weekend, I took out the Airport Extreme Base Station (to help with an issue at home - see my thread over at Printing), and yesterday I brought it back to the office and installed it again.
And since I re-installed the Base Station, this is the problem:
1. from PCs, I can't see the iBook (can't attach a PC drive letter - eg. I:\), and therefore can't access it
2. from the iBook, I can't print to my printer - furthermore, when I select the Printing preference and click "Add Printer", no printers whatsoever show up (the list stays blank), whereas before the engineers' printer (some Minolta Bizhub with Bonjour) would show up as well
3. I can, however, access the Windows server from my iBook
Any ideas what's going on? I tried to solve this, but gave up quickly (no way I can possibly figure this out), plus I have this issue at home (can't print wirelessly to a printer attached via USB to a Time Capsule - I can, however, print to the same printer if I attach it to the previously used Airport Express!) - 2 problems and mounting headaches!
I am thinking about re-installing the whole system (take off all data, do a complete wipe and start afresh…), but don't like to spend a whole day doing this…

JanYou only need one computer to configure the Base Station - and since you can easily do this from your PC, you really don't need to be able to do it from your Mac as well. I suggest you stop worrying about this, leave your Base Station running with the current firmware version, and use your PC if you ever need to make a configuration change.
Note that NO Base Station software needs to be installed on the Mac, for the Mac to be able to connect wirelessly to the Base Station. If your Mac is currently unable to establish a wireless connection to the Base Station, you have a different problem - and one that won't be solved by installing the Airport Admin Utility or downgrading firmware on the Base Station. Incidentally - what type of wireless security are you using on the Base Station - WEP or WPA? A base station configured to use WPA security will only be accessible by a Mac running at least MacOS 10.3.

Hi, I know that in order to expose a WS, I need to place the wsdl file in a specific directory which is defined in the j2ee visual admin. I can't find the documentation for the place in the visual admin where I define the wsdl's directory. Please adv
