NUMA is disabled in Oracle Linux
Hello
referring to the latest Oracle Linux 6
https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/entry/oracle_rdbms_server_11gr2_pre
This package (as also the previous oracle-validated rpm) sets the numa=off in kernel boot (even when using Oracle UEK, not just Red Hat kernel)
Assuming the latest Oracle RDBMS, i.e. 11g R2, 11.2.0.3 on X86_64 bit-bit Oracle Linux 5.x and 6.x
Can anyone point me to the position re Oracle 11g R2 support of NUMA on Intel/AMD based servers ?
Many thanks.

Many thanks.NUMA is by default is disable from 11gR2 database versions. I.e enableNUMA_support=FALSE is by default from 11.2 database even if NUMA is configured from hardware/os level. Oracle recommends to do complete test n planning before going in production with NUMA enabled at database and os level.
If you still want to enable NUMA in your database from 11.2, follow below note. For check NUMA support at hardware and OS level you need to check with your vendor.
Enable Oracle NUMA support with Oracle Server Version 11.2.0.1 [ID 864633.1]

http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm
Then burn the iso disk image and restart the computer from the appropriate media. Be sure to follow the instructions of your CD/DVD software to properly burn .ISO images. There is plenty of info on the web. -
Oracle Linux 6.2 restarts randomly
Hi all,
I'm having problems with Oracle Linux server i recently set up.
I'm running Oracle Linux 6.2 with UEK2 (2.6.39-100.7.1.el6uek.x86_64) and all latest updates from public yum server on VMware eSX 4.1i & VMWare tools installed.
I've been noticing that when I'm connected with SSH to my server I randomly get an error that the connection is lost and all connected sessions fail. It all happens so quickly that I can not check via console if the server really rebooted.
But the data from last reboot command is kinda strange - output bellow.
How it's possible that all last three uptimes are being incremented at once?
Is the server really restarting or is there any timeout on ssh sessions or what is the problem here?
What can I check more?

Memory hot plug supported in Oracle linux 6.0 ?
hi,
I am testing Oracle Linux 6.0 on a vm, I tried to hot add memory, but i noticed that the respective modules like acpiphp and acpi_memhotplug not present.
Also i got the below information from the site, http://blogs.oracle.com/wim/2010/10/playing_with_sr_iov_in_oracle.html
"----------To enable pci hotplug in the guest, please do the following :
in the guest you have to load both pciehp and acpiphp
you can do this easily by doing :
**echo "modprobe pciehp" >> /etc/rc.modules
echo "modprobe acpiphp" >> /etc/rc.modules
chmod 755 /etc/rc.modules**
note - this is for testing purposes only. We do not currently have official support in the product for this.--------".
I tried doing the above mentioned procedure, then also the mem-hot plug is not working.
So I feel mem-hot plug is not supported.
Can any oone confirm me about this.

Oracle Linux 6 - stuck on Welcome Setup Screen, black screen on CTRL+ALT+F*
Oracle Linux 6 DVD x64.
Installed fine. I selected gnome for UI + all dev packages as I will be doing some dev work on the box.
After install it boots okay and the Welcome setup screen shows up. It allows me to setup connection to ULN, create a user, enable kdump etc. These functions work fine, but right after I finish setting it all up (i.e. the last setting I see is the kdump enable/disable screen), the box goes into limbo state after pressing [Finish] button.
The screen turns black and that's it.
Also when I tried to switch from the Welcome setup screen to a terminal mode, i.e. by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 (tried ...+F2 also) the box gets stuck too. There is no way to go back to the X session, i.e. CTRL+ALT+F6 (F7, F8). It is just stuck on the black screen.
Here's some specs:
Motherboard: ASUS P8H67-M Pro (with B3 revision of Sandy Bridge)
CPU: Intel I5-2500 (VPRO) (BX80623I52500)
Memory: Kingston HyperX 8GB (compatible with m/b + run memtest86 for hours without error)
Video: using built in Intel HD (could this be the issue?)
After re-boot I'm back to Welcome setup screen.
Notes:
1. Boots fine if 'singleuser' is appended to the kernel boot line in GRUB, but that's not the point. I would like to run UI.
2. I have tried removing 'rhgb' and 'quiet' kernel boot parameters to no avail. I have actually stripped the kernel boot line in GRUB down to 'ro' and that would not help either.
3. Ubuntu 10.10 x64 runs fine.
4. Windows 7 x64 runs fine. You may have a hardware or system bios issue in combination with the existing drivers. Have you checked the vendors home page for your system? What clues exit in the log files in /var/log?
It sounds like you are using a Latop. Oracle Linux, like RHEL is not designed for desktop and mobile computers. Installation success will depend on your hardware compatibility, but you will very likely be missing appropriate drivers for wireless, video and power management.
If Enterprise Linux is a requirement and you are not using it as the primary OS, or if the computer hardware lacks support, how about installing Oracle Virtualbox and install Linux as a guest OS - I'm pretty sure this should work. -
Oracle Linux 6.6 w/ UEK3 boots to EL 2.6 kernel
I have just installed Oracle Linux 6.6 with the UEK3 kernel. Everything is up-to-date and the 3.8.13-68.el6uek.x86_64 kernel is set as the default boot kernel, but the machine always boots to 2.6.32-504.12.2.el6.x86_64, which is the specified crash kernel. I don't know why the 3.8 kernel is failing.
How can I debug this?
Thanks,

Does Oracle Linux Rel.6 have graphical capabilities
Installed Oracle Linux Rel. 6 on a stand-alone PC for testing. When the system boots it defaults to terminal mode automatically. What is required are graphical capabilities to load Oracle products (DB and OEM). Is this possible with this linux and how?
Dude wrote:
At some point in history a computer was not even considered a consumer device. Sorry I don't understand why a graphical interface, which intends to make complex configurations easier to manage and more foolproof, should not be applied to "expert devices". It does not make it easier. That is a fallacy - the type of argument one gets from a Windows admin that only knows a GUI and nothing else. There are numerous times when dealing with the command line is not only far more powerful, but also far more easier. There are so many different types of configurations, many not to be found in any GUI. There are configurations that are too complex for a GUI. Etc.
Linux is not Windows. Linux does not have an all-configuration-in-one-basket registry. So the GUI centric approach to sys admin on Linux is not only the wrong approach, but a dangerous one.
As for the desktop interface, I have no problem if someone decides that their servers run best without it, and that a text interface and a bare metal engine is the way a computer should run. It depends on your environment and desires, and it is easy enough for someone with such requirement and technical background to customize a Linux system accordingly. But I'm not a fan of social engineering and don't think it should be disabled by default because it will give newcomers a harder time than required. So instead give newcomers a crutch called a GUI and hobble them for the rest of their lives, expecting a GUI to be the extend of what sys admin and configuration are on Linux?
To put this into an analogy. A Cessna single engine 152 pilot cannot simply expect to get into a twin turbo prop King Air and fly the plane. He cannot argue that the plane should be easy enough to fly for a pilot and that as he is a pilot he should be able to fly it. He first needs to learn how twins behave. What the envelope is. How the systems work. Etc.
Yes, he will need his basic piloting skills learned as a C152 pilot. But those skills alone do not suffice.
Similarly, newcomers to Linux sys admin should not expect to simply get into the driving seat and effectively and correctly install and configure it. There is a learning curve. Arguing that this learning curve needs to be mitigated by a GUI? That is like a C152 pilot arguing that he does not need to know the complexities of a twin as he can use the autopilot in his little Cessna and all he needs to fly the large twin is to use that plane's autopilot. It is nonsensical. -
Running webex on Oracle Linux 6
Please excuse my newbiness
I am trying to run Webex, on OELinux 6 with Firefox 3.6.17 and Java JRE 6.30 . Webex support says 32 bit only. So I created the appropriate links to the java plugin.
/usr/java/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so
When I launch firefox (forcing 32 bit using setarch i686) and check FF and Java it is confirmed that I am running FF 32 and Java 6.30.
When I launch a webex session, the java applet is loaded, but I can't view a remote desktop or share my desktop. No errors are produced.
Has anyone had success solving this? I have checked on the RHEL references and suggestions to no avail.
Thanks .... FLeaDid you check the syslog messages for any clues? You should also check the "Error Console" from the Firefox Tools menu. There are several troubleshooting tools that can log the connection of Webex at http://support.webex.com/support/downloads.html.
Based on your description it might be a firewall issue. You might want to try to temporarily disable the firewall to see if it solves the problem.
sudo iptables start
sudo iptables statusAnyway, I believe the best source of information for this will be the Cisco Webex support site at http://support.webex.com/support/support-overview.html. Relevant Information that applies to RHEL 6 and CentOS 6 should also apply to Oracle Linux. -
Oracle Linux 6.3: Very Long Delay During Installation
After booting the system using the Free Oracle Linux CD-ROM (Ver. 6.3) and selecting the GRUB option "Install or upgrade existing installation" the terminal goes blank for a very long time. On terminal widow #4, however, the message:
ERR kernel:Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
...scrolls by for what seems like a very long time (4-5 minutes) before being replaced with another message:
WARNING NetworkManager: <warn> error requesting auth for org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.enable-disable-network: (26) Remote Exception invoking org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Authority.CheckAuthorization() on /org/freedesktop/PolicyKit1/Authority at name org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ExecFailed: Cannot launch daemon, file not found or permissions invalid
...and then, after choosing not to verify the installation media, installation finally begins.
How can I speed this process up?
Eric Pretorious
Truckee, CAThe I/O error on fd0 probably means you do not have a floppy disk attached. I suggest to check the boot device list and their priority in your system's BIOS settings.

How could I install Oracle Linux 6.3.
When I am going to install oracle Linux 6.3 in my machine after selecting the installation option(i.e "Install or Upgrading the existing system" or "Install system with basic video driver") nothing is appearing except a blank screen. Please help.
My machine config is as bellow.
Mother Board : Asus P5Q Pro
Processor : Core2Duo 2.8GHz
RAM : 6GB
Video Card : Nvdia GForce 9 seriesNvdia GForce 9 series is not a server type video card. Oracle Linux and other RHEL derivatives are designed for server hardware. You might want to keep this in mind because there may be additional problems. Your mileage will vary.
Regarding your problem, it sounds like you are experiencing a typical compatibility or support problem with your video card DRM. A common way around this problem is to disable support for Kernel Mode Setting (KMS). You can test this by setting the nomodeset Linux kernel parameter by pressing any key at the very system startup to enter the grub bootloader menu. -

VNC certainly has it's beauty and advantages. I was under the impression though that the OP is trying to run OUI on a local server console that is runnig a graphical desktop. If that wasn't the case, VNC was certainly a preferable option.I have not done a local GUI console installation of Oracle in years. In fact, I'm known to start foaming at the mouth when discovering a server running X on the console, disabling it interactively, preventing initlevel 5 from ever loading X again, and leave comments of my disgust in inittab. ;-)
If I'm not mistaken then the vncserver does not need to have the X server running since the necessary support is built-in. The installation of X libraries is probably still required, but I'm not sure.It needs a X display manager. And xterm. twm does fine as display manager. Small and minimalistic. Not the greatest of ideas loading an entire Gnome desktop in VNC.
Btw, Apple Mac OS X provides seamless X11 support and uses VNC for screen sharing and even for installing a system remotely. If you use Apple Mac to access a remote Linux system, using ssh with X forwarding is very convenient as it works right out of the box without having to configure the remote Linux server.Nice. OS/X has come a long way the last few years. I recall a time when they pretended there was no "stinking" command line. :-) -
Oracle Linux 5.6 - Do I need to keep the xen kernel ?
I am using the Oracle Linux 5.6 kernel 2.6.32-100.26.2.el5 also know as the UEK Release 1 in an OVM x86_64 environment.
Question: Since the Guests are paravirtualized and require Xen specifc I/O drives ( network, disk, etc. ) does that mean I need to keep the Xen kernel rpms, i.e.,
kernel-xen-2.6.18-238.0.0.0.1.el5
kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-238.0.0.0.1.el5
and this entry in /boot/grub/grub.conf
title Oracle Linux Server (2.6.18-238.0.0.0.1.el5xen)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-238.0.0.0.1.el5xen ro root=LABEL=/ numa=off
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-238.0.0.0.1.el5xen.img
The main driver for this question is I am trying to determine if these rpms are accessed in any way when the UEK Release 1 is in use. If so, then I will need
to heed to the Security Scan results against the xen kernel version otherwise I will ignore them and move forward.

Hardware virtualized guest with kernel-uek-2.6.32-100.35.1.el5uek and higher
Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel version kernel-uek-2.6.32-100.35.1 adds support for paravirtualized drivers in a harware virtualized guest on Oracle VM. Starting this kernel version hardware virtualized guests which are not configured to use paravirtualized drivers will need an additional kernel boot parameter "xen_emul_unplug=never" in /etc/grub.conf:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32-100.35.1.el5uek ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 xen_emul_unplug=never
With kernel-uek-2.6.32-100.35.1 and higher, the default is to present only paravirtualized drivers when running in a hardware virtualized guest on Oracle VM. Adding this kernel boot parameter makes the kernel also present the emulated drivers as it did before (e.g. the 8139cp network driver may no longer load if this parameter is not set).
Older version of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel do not have support for hardware virtualized guest that uses paravirtualized drivers (PVHVM). -
