Numbering Chapter Headings

I'd like to use a Heading style to label chapters, and I'd like to number the chapters, preferably automatically, so that when a new chapter is inserted, the subsequent chapters will adjust automatically. Each chapter, by the way is in its own section, with its own headers and footers.
I tried selecting the paragraphs with the Heading, adding list numbers, and then changing the heading style to accept the changes. And it works, except that all of the headings have the number 1. Is there a way to make them sequential?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi,
When you're defining a list, make sure that the option is set to "Continue from previous" rather than "Start at: x" in the *Text Inspector>List*. Subsequently, in the Style Drawer, select the down-pointing arrow to the right of Heading and choose Redefine Style from Selection. It works on my machine, let me know if it doesn't work on yours.

  • Numbering of Headings

Numbering. Pages can do numbering of headings like 1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2, 2.1 etc. just like Word. However, you can't change it to Chapter 1, 1.1, 1.2, Chapter 2, 2.1, 2.2. Which is a real pain!
    Anyone else feeling my pain?
I've resorted to manually write "Chapter 1", then after that have a font size 1, white colour heading "1", then followed by the normally formatted "1.1".
That means if I want to change arrangements of my chapters, I'll have to manually change the "Chapter Number". But more annoying is I can't have "Chapter 1" on my Table of Content list.

_Go to "Provide Pages Feedback" in the "Pages" menu_, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'11
If you enter the complete heading "Chapter 1.1" by hand, it may be include in the TOC.
Just apply one style and select it among those taken in account by the TOC.

  • How to set different font for numbers in headings and TOCs

    Hi,
I've noticed some people use a different font for numbers in headings and TOCs to get some extra magic. Is there any way to automate such use of fonts in the paragraph styles?
Oh, and any suggestions on what fonts would be good for numbers?
    Thanks!

I was merely continuing on the original theme -- any digit in any character style. It was only later revealed that (a) the OP needed old style figures, and (b) those were available in his font from the start.
The negative lookahead is the answer to his question (copied in full now)
Based on the above InDesignSecrets tutorial, does anyone know what to do if some of the numbers end with a dot or a comma?
Like the Norwegian date format: 13. mai 2009
Or the Norwegian way of pricing items: 2900,-
and my example shows it can be done, but with an added caveat. If digits are to be set in red, using the exceptions the OP asks for, my example sentence will come out as
    "Think of a number between 1 to 10, but don't use 9."
    rather than the (here) intended
    "Think of a number between 1 to 10, but don't use 9."

  • IDVD chapter headings anamorphic

According to Apple's technical note T51611, an anamorphic 16:9 sequence must be exported from Final Cut Express to iDVD using certain custom settings from the File>Export>Using Quicktime Conversion menu. However, this bypasses the "Include Chapter Headings" option in the regular Export>As Quicktime Movie menu. Is there any way to include chapter headings for iDVD in a sequence exported using Quicktime conversion? Does this problem not occur in DVD Pro?

In http://www.fcpbook.com/Video9.html Tom describes how to fix your 16:9 movie after Export/Quicktime Movie (which preserves chapter markers).

  • Extremely Basic Primer on Creating Chapter Headings

Would like to receive recommendations as to what others have found to be the single most clear and simple explanation of how to create chapter headings in a book. I've reviewed multiple sources on this, but constantly run up against issues..
    Appreciatively,
    Luca

Before I can face the book once more, it would be wise to trim away some of the false starts present in the document. I have numerous paragraph and character styles names which are useless to me, created or defined in an attempt to define and use them properly, but was generally unsuccessful in doing so. Now there are dozens that can and should be deleted.
I've formatted chapters 1 and 2 manually, temporarily giving up on the method of using variables and such, just to get some forward movement, and actually would prefer not to lose them.
The document is a technical book on optincs with many subheadings, 500 pages (hence the need to understand this process). On the left side header: chapter title. Right side header:chapter suheadiing.

  • Audio book has no chapter headings

    Downloaded "Walden".
It appears in iTunes as Part 1 and Part 2.
    No chapter headings.
No way to navigate through eleven+ hours.
Imagine a CD with no song titles.
Think of a city with no street signs.
    Is this universal?
    Any help?

Glad you got the Audiobook sorted out. Audible.com seems to have a really good model for iTunes and iPod integrated audiobooks, as well. I've been using their service for quite some time, and highly recommend it.
In iTunes, click your iTunes menu and select Preferences. Click the Playback tab. If 'Crossfade playback' is selected, go ahead and de-select that option and click OK.

  • Missing chapter headings

Recently purchased a new ipad air 2. Upgraded to ios 8.1.3 and then downloaded my previously purchased movies from iTunes and most of the movies have chapter headings still associated with them, but several are now missing the chapter headings. These same movies previously had the chapter headings in place on my prior ipad 2 (not an air), but still with ios 8.1.2.
Have tried deleting the movies with missing chapter headings and then re-downloading them, but still no change.
    Any suggestions?

    Just noodling here a little . . .
    1. Which heading style(s) are you using for topic titles? Are
they consistently applied for all topics, looking at the html view?
Are there any stray spaces or html code immediately before the
    <begin heading> tags?
    2. Are you generating print doc with the project's style
    mapping dot, or some other?
    3. Did you select "Maintain HTML heading levels"?
In points 2 and 3, I don't know whether these settings (or
which option) may be causing the problem; just suggesting that you
change one at a time to test print output.

  • Adobe PDF maker add-in for Word 2010 adding strange numbers to headings

    Hi everyone,
I used the Adobe PDF maker add-in for Word 2010 to export a Word document to pdf. After saving the pdf, I noticed that the headings that are displayed in the navigaton pane now contain strange numbers, eg.
    1.1 14BSecond level heading
    1.2 15BSecond level heading
    The above should be:
    1.1 Second level heading
    1.2 Second level heading
It's doing this for all second level headings in the document and when I save as a pdf file, these numbers are showing in the pdf bookmarks.
Does anyone know if this is a known bug with the pdf add-in and if yes, if there's any way to remove the numbers?
    Thanks in advance.

I am experiencing a somewhat similar problem. In my case the unwanted numbers are being prepended to the running headers at the tops of the pages.
So for example, I have some Heading 1 text that says Verifying the Required Account Settings. But in the running header, this shows as 11BVerifying the Required Account Settings.
Unlike the original poster, the 11B does not appear in the text itself - only in the PDF generated by Acrobat's PDF Maker.
This occurs with this document when output from either Word 2007 or Word 2010 and Acrobat X.
    Any suggested fixes?    ...pt

  • Correctly numbering chapter points

How do I get chapters to be numbered automatically on a chapter menu with several pages? When I create the chapter menus they will number correctly for the first page only but on the next menu page they start again at chapter 1. Any help appreciated. Thanx

Hi, when I was learning this, I googled and found this video that explains it all. Follow EVERY step exactly.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgi-fi_o2CQ
My advice is this; create your template menu (the one that will be referenced and used when you hit "create chapter index") exactly as you want it to behave. Make sure your buttons are lined up and have the correct navigation. make sure they are the right font, color etc. make sure you have a Main, Previous, and Next button with the navigation you want.  Then and only then execute "create chapter index".
and, as others pointed out "create multi page chapter index" is blu ray ONLY.
    good luck!

  • Chapter Headings Are Not Exporting to PDF as h1-h3 tags

With two-column layouts, even though I assigned PDF export tags to the chapter heading Paragraph Styles, they are not being exported to PDF with h1-3 tags.
I'm using InDesign CS6 and Acrobat Pro XI on a 64-bit Windows 7 system.
    To export, I'm using the
File / Adobe PDF Presets option:
On the Export Adobe PDF pop-up-screen, the following are checked:
    Create Tagged PDF
    Bookmarks
    Hyperlinks
And I have the Compatibility set to "Acrobat 8/9 (PDF1.7)
Any ideas why the heading tags are not being exported correctly?
    Thanks.

There are some known problems with bookmarks and CS5 as well. As far as I know, the 7.0.3 update won't fix them, but it does solve some other problems, so you should install it.

  • Chapter Headings

    Hi all..
New to InDesign, but trying to learn as fast as possible. I'm making a paperback, going well so far. =) Yeah, long way to go. I'm wondering is there a specific way to format the chapter page? How far from the top the header should be, how to always make the chapter page be on the right hand side page? How much space after the header before the text starts?
I'm using Heading2 for all chapter headers, but I'm not quite sure how to set up the style sheet for all of those parameters.
Thanks SO MUCH in advance for any help!

  • Why do Chapter Headings disappear in TOC?

Hi, I have checked and double-checked my styles and set up in the TOC styles box and exported using the same TOC style but my headings all disappear. Styles are all fine when I generate the TOC but export makes them disappear and rreplaces them with a dash!

My apologies, had to rush and pick kids up... To ePUB... Thanks!

  • How to pick up chapter numbers in TOC headings?

Each new chapter heading is in a one-row, two-column table. Column 1 contains only a large number (numbered style called ChapNum) against a shaded background, and column 2 (unshaded) contains the chapter title (Heading1 -- which is NOT numbered; only the style in column 1 contains numbering.)
The only exceptions are the Preface chapter (a Heading1) and the TOC itself (which uses TOCTitle so it won't appear in the TOC). For both, the shaded column 1 uses a style called ChapNoNum.
Page layout has sideheads; first page of each numbered chapter looks similar to this:
    |-----|--------------------------|
    |     |                          |
    | 1   | Heading1                 |
    |-----|--------------------------|
    |     | text text text text text |
    |     | text text text text text |
    |     | text text text text text |
    |     | text text text text text |
I want the TOC to pick up the chapter numbers like so:
    |-----|--------------------------|
    |     |                          |
    |     | TABLE OF CONTENTS        |
    |-----|--------------------------|
    |     | Preface...............1  |
    |     | 1. Getting Started....3  |
    |     | 2. More Stuff.........5  |
    |     | 3. Troubleshooting....9  |
But the TOC picks up only the Heading1s, which aren't numbered. How to include the ChapNum in front of the Heading1 in the TOC? (I've tried using graphic boxes on master pages instead of the table rows on the body page but haven't found the answer there.)
    Any help is most welcome.

TOCs capture only specified paragraph formats. Your chapter numbers aren't specified in the TOC, so they're not captured. To capture both the number and the title paragraphs, you need to specify both formats in the TOC set-up. To make the number run into the title, you'll need to assign a run-in paragraph format to the number's entry in the TOC; this will cause the title to follow the number on the same line.

  • Numbering Headings in the PDF output

    RoboHelp HTML 6
To create the RoboHelp project, I imported a Word document,
which created a topic for each heading. Now, besides HTML help, I
want to generate printed documentation in PDF.
    How can I create numbered headings (e.g. 1, 1.1, 1.1.4 etc)
    in the PDF output?
I do not want to "hard code" these numbering in the headings
itself in the HTML, because inserting a heading would result in
manually updating all subsequent headings as well.

    There is only one workaround:
    - leave out the heading numbers in RoboHelp
    - generate a Word first
    - set the outline numbering, which numbers all headings as
    required
    - update TOC manually in Word
    - generate PDF
