Numbers - Chart

Using "Numbers",how do I delete data from cells used in a chart?

Hi WR,
You can delete the cells contents, or you can exclude them from the range.. Click on the graph (chart) then click on Edit Data References
Now you can drag the little white circle (bottom right of the table) to exclude some cells from the range:

How do I get row numbers to appear automatically in a Numbers chart.  Just 1,2,3,4, etc.

Awesome! I needed a pointer for technical documentation: a thick white stroke, with a thinner black stroke going right down the middle of it. I made a new stripe stroke style: Start: 37%, Width: %26. Then I did a gap color of Paper, gap tint: 100%. Stroke color is black. Round cap.
Thanks Bob! You rock. This made my day!!!

  • Problems updating numbers charts in pages - where is that "refresh" button?

    Hi,
I am trying to update a numbers chart that I have included in a pages document, but can't figure how to do it. Seems like I am missing and icon in Pages.
From the help manual from Pages:
*Select the chart on the page and click the Refresh button that appears.*
I keep looking but can't see it. Am I missing something here. Is there a setting somewhere that is not set.
P.S Yes, I saved the Numbers dokument before I copied it into the Pages doc. After updating the chart, I saved it before I returned to the Pages doc.
    All help is appreciated.
    Best regards

    Hi,
Sorry for this, but I was thinking about tables and not charts!!!
I figured out the charts issue, but am I correct if I understand that you can't insert Numbers tables to Pages, and then update them (in the same was as the charts?)

  • Keynote and Numbers Charts

Searched the forum with no result ... within Keynote Charts, is there a way of adding an embedded Numbers Chart that preserves the mathematics? (i.e. Cell X = Cell Y * Cell Z). Keynote Charts don't allow formulas and when I cut & paste from Numbers, the cell formulas disappear leaving only the value. This is a cinch using MS Powerpoint and MS Excel. What am I missing? Thanks!

    nbenning,
I wonder too. First, I presume that you mean Table, not Chart. Here the formulas are preserved and active in Tables that are copied in Numbers and Pasted in Keynote.
Are you sure that the formulas aren't there? If you double-click on the Cell with the formula, what do you see?

  • Moving Numbers Charts into Word

I am having trouble exporting charts I make in Numbers to Word (which I need to use for my dissertation). Right now, every time I do this Word (2004) imports the chart as a picture with a black background (making it virtually impossible to read).
My question is whether there is an easy solution to this problem.
I have seen one post in this forum that suggests Apple has a work around. It says that Apple has "solved" this transparency problem. But I see no mention of how or how to apply it. All of my software is updated.
I have also seen the post that describes the long work around (export to a third application like photoshop and then import into word), but I don't consider that a real solution.
    Any ideas?

My workaround solution to get Numbers charts into Word 2004 and 2008 is to place the subject chart(s) onto one or more sheets - I tend to put each chart on a separate sheet - then export the charts as PDF files, set for "Best Quality" and to the "Current Sheet". I then generally drag each individual PDF into Word and adjust as necessary for scale and position.
I'll admit that IMO Word 2004's graphics engine really wasn't (Isn't?) consistent or that great at handling non-native graphics, and I've encountered the black picture syndrome dozens of times, and just try reimporting until I get what I want. I've also used Apple's Preview application (via Automator) to generate TIFF and JPG files of the PDFs I generate, and almost all of the time one of the resulting files gets me what I need.
One last method of shoehorning an image into either Word application that's worked wonders for me since Word 2001 is to choose the graphics element you want to get into Word and copy-paste it into Word, letting the Clipboard handle the translation; I've used this technique just this morning to get two graphs (a copied one-page PDF from Preview and a small chart from Numbers) into Word as graphics, albeit into Word 2008 - the finished product was exactly as I'd expected.
One last option is to copy your elements, one at a time, to the Clipboard, and to use the Word "Paste Special" command, choosing the "as Picture" option; the pasted elements likely will look a little fuzzy, but they're in your document.
Good luck - I hope my offering helps, and if a more direct method were available, I'd love to know what the better solution is!

  • Numbers chart order problem.

How can I reverse the order of a Bar Chart in Numbers?

If there were a Reverse Order option, you wouldn't have needed to ask.
I worked out the trick with the extra table in reverse, all I did though was Copy Paste, then sort the Date column going the other way. I'll have that table on another "page" which the customer wont see once I print the PDF of the original table and charts.
    Not exactly "it just works".
No, but if you're doing it on a one-time basis for each chart, it does work. The only advantage to using the formulas is that the conversion and the chart update is done automatically. You do need to ensure that the two tables continue to have the same number of rows, though.

  • Re-linking Numbers charts in Keynote '09

When your Keynote '09 chart loses its link to the source Numbers file, and you try to update the chart, you get this message:
"You can also restore the original source chart and try to update again"
Does anyone know how to do this?

    Hi sailor,
I don't believe so... You can always add an intermediary page between your photo and the link gateway slide. After duplicating the original link slide, make sure that that the new ones do not have the previous bullet point on "building in" but static and already built in. So basically the slide starts with your previous bullet points and when you click the build, it just builds in the next bullet point hyperlinked to your next photo.
It's actually a fairly fast process when you right-click (or option click) and duplicate the page. All you need to do is just make sure the previous bullet points are not "building in." Although this solution will provide the end presentation that you wish, it is not as clean and efficient (makes a presentation with more slides) as you might have hoped for with the photos linking back to just 1 slide with the slide having "memorized" your previous progression in the bullet point builds. Hope this helps.

  • When pasting a numbers chart into keynote the refresh button will not appear.

I tried anything I read online, like saving the numbers file, having both of them locally instead of in iCloud... But there is no way the chart gets linked to numbers...
any idea? I really need this to work. I have a quarterly presentation with many charts and the idea is to have them all in numbers so that keynote charts update.
    Thanks for your help!

Thanks Gary, if that is true, which seems to be, the re-written version lacks of one of the best features the previous version had. I cannot understand why it wasn't implemented in the new re-written application.
In my case, the work around is quite bothering... Many of the charts belong to one single table. With previous version, once updated the table, all those charts were updated in Keynote, now you can imagine how tedious it has become...
    Thanks anyway!!

  • Cant add more data points to numbers chart

I have a 2 axis 2D graph. I would guess i have about 150 data points along the y axis for both lines on the chart. I have been updating the chart each week no probem with new data points. However today, i can only seem to add a few more points - when i try to add past a certain amount of data points, the last 20 or so data points are removed from the series?
It simply will not allow me to add more data?
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated as the charts are for use in my business

Hi Jerrold, thanks for the reply.
I dont have category labels. I have a 2 axis 2D chart, with a line series and an area series on the chart. I add new data to the chart each week by clicking on either the line or the area series on the chart, then going to my data table beside the chart, and by holding apple command button and clicking on the relevant cells to add to the charts. As of this weeks adding, it starts of as usual, adding the cells to the line and area series, and thus adding data onto the existing chart and extending it out to the right, as it normally would. However, i can only add a certain amount of new cells (data points) to either the line or area series. When i go to add more, a very strange thing happens. The series switches from all the cells that are highlighted blue, to another table i have on the same document??? If i look at the Inspector in the Data box under the series tab, the data goes from the typical 'Table 1 :: D18', (highlighted in blue, to the following weird data point : 'D38,SFTGlobalID_CB7D88F601784CAC8DD283ECA59CFB41 :'
Its worth noting that although i an working on a brand new macbook pro, numbers has crashed on me a number of times when adding large amounts of data to the chart The table has 1,120 rows, and 11 columns. Only 1 in every 5 or so rows are plotted (on y axis), so roughly 200 or so data points for both line and area chart are plotted. And only 1 column is used for each chart. Thus i have 11 charts on the one numbers document. Is it a case of too much for numbers to handle?
I have just deleted all the y axis data for the area series for one chart, and added all the data from the whole table again, (rather than just adding this weeks to last weeks, which is where i saw the problem in the first place) to see if it made a difference. But none. Once i got to a certain point, if i add one more cell data point to the chart, the exact same thing happened as above - the highlighted data switched from what i had been highlighting the whole way down the table, to an entirely different table in the same workbook.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • Numbers - Chart Edges Transparent???

I have been waiting with much anticipation for something in the Mac world to take the place of AW6 spreadsheets that could be used universally.
With the announcement of iworks08 and numbers, I thought maybe ....
When I imported some of the Data/charts I had created in AW6 to see what could be done in numbers I found something quirky. The background for the scale numbers on the left side of the chart is transparent and you can see the data spreadsheet behind the chart.
Essentially anything outside the area of the chart bars box is transparent.
I wish I could post a screenshot to show you.
I guess I will have to continue to use neo office.

Make sure you have Header Row and Column enabled, then create the graph.

  • How do you rotate the text inside a wedge on a Keynote or Numbers chart?

I'm trying to create a pie chart and would like to rotate the text in some of the wedges on the chart. If I open a new text box, it will allow me to rotate the box. For labels generated by the spreadsheet data, I cannot figure out how to do the same thing. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

You would need to add a custom text box and rotate that as the rotate tool is not assigned to wedge labels

  • IWork Numbers chart legend does not appear

Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? I've made a chart from a table that has headers, checked the boxes to show the title and the legend and the chart title appears but the legend is not there. It doesn't matter if I resize the table, switch between normal and print views, check and uncheck legend, make sure all text is black, ...
I don't know why it doesn't appear or is invisible.
I'd appreciate any help you can give.
    Thanks!
    Jill

Jerry, I hadn't moved the chart. I've recreated one and the legend just never shows up. I've tried resizing the charts, moving the charts apart and away from the tables with data, resizing the chart area, selecting all text and making the color black, reducing the page size to 50% to see if the legends were lurking somewhere unexpected, and I can't find the legends or make them visible.
Correct that: I just went back to the spreadsheet after reducing it to 50% and started editing a table and the legend for one chart (not connected to the table) appeared. It's still missing for another chart created from the same data set and two other charts on the same page.
I just tried creating a new chart in a new page and there's no legend. The default is set up not to have a legend but when I click "Show legend", it doesn't appear. I'm flummoxed.

  • Numbers, charts and adjacent cells

I can't seem to generate a chart from non-adjacent column cells. I've tried this from the help file:
To add a chart based on nonadjacent cells, hold down the Command key as you select cells from a table. Then click Charts in the toolbar, and choose a chart type.
and it doesn't work. Any ideas please?
    Thanks, Rob

    The feature behaves flawlessly.
Are you sure that you apply the described process.
    I selected A1 … B11
then, with the cmd key pressed, I selected E1 … E11

  • Numbers Charts:  Stacked bar chart with two sets of data

    Hi....newbie with first post
I'm trying to create a stacked bar chart with two lots of comparative data.
So, there is Basic + Overtime for April 2010 as one stack (ie the basic is one colour, stacked on top is the overtime in a different colour)
Basic + Overtime for April 2011 next to it.
I can get April figures next to one another as four separate columns (2 x basic, 2 x overtime), or I can get all four figures in a single stack, but I can't to two columns (one for each year) of basic and overtime.
    Any ideas?

    UK,
What you are trying to do will require that you interleave the two sets of two-series data into one longer two-set series, and then plot just the one pair of series. Clear as mud?
What I'm saying is that you have to fake out the program into thinking that you have just two sets, not four.
You will have one series that has, for instance Apr 2010 Basic, Apr 2011 Basic, May, 2010 Basic, May 2011 Basic, etc.. This other series in that chart will have Apr 2010 Overtime, Apr 2011 Overtime, May 2010 Overtime, May 2011 Overtime, etc.
The bad thing here (I'll anticipate your first complaint) is that 2010 and 2011 data will have the same color for Basic and another color will be assigned for both 2010 Overtime and 2011 Overtime.
To get separate color sets for 2010 and 2011 data pairs, you will have to create two charts and overlay them. Both charts would be built in the alternating year format described above, but in one chart all the 2010 data would be blank and in the other chart all the 2011 data would be blank, leaving spaces in the chart for the data from the other chart to nest in.
