Numbers exported to Excel
Is there a hidden function or another process when exporting NUMBERS worksheets to excel. Microsoft users are telling me that NUMBERS files will not open in EXCEL for windows.

I find that I have to open the exported file in Excel and fix it up because the exported file does not look much like the Numbers file. I end up spending considerable time in Excel trying to make it look like the original. Often I've found it easier to recreate the same file from scratch in Excel. Especially if I have graphics and charts in it.

When attempting to open .XLS files in Numbers, the format is not recognized. When the format is .XLSX, the format is recognized. Why is it this way? It's still much more common for folks to have the .XLS file format on their excel files. Why would Numbers not be backwards-compatible?
Additionally, to state in the benefits of this program that one can save to 'Excel' is a little misleading. You can't save to anything except .numbers. Sure, you can export to Excel (with file extension .XLS, I might add), but you can't save or save-as.
Does anyone else see the irony in being able to export to .XLS but not be able to open an .XLS?
There is something to be said for clarity.
You can't expect folks to have Numbers and Excel on their systems, so how else are they supposed to open .XLS files in Numbers?
And I don't need to see another advertisement for NeoOffice or OpenOffice here, thanks. I'd actually like Numbers to be a little more sensible.
That is all.When the advertisements were written, there was no Lion so we were able to Save As Excel.
At thiqs time there is no longer Save As command under Lion but the feature is always available.
When your editing task is ended, you are free to use this scheme:
File > Duplicate
File > Save and in the dialog you will have the option save as Excel.
Numbers isn't and I hope that it will not become an Excel editor.
Its resources contain a flag defining it this way.

Hyperlink in Numbers acts strange when exported to Excel
Hello All,
I'm having a problem with hyperlinks. In Numbers, I'm linking to an mp3 audio file on the internet. This works perfectly, you click on the song title hyperlink, Safari opens and the song plays/streams right in the browser window.
When I export the Numbers file as an Excel document, the hyperlink still works but the mp3 is displayed as a text file within Safari (miles of random text). I would like it to play in the browser like it does in Numbers.
Also, when exporting to other formats, like .pdf, the file plays in the browser just like in Numbers.
So, what is Excel doing to the link that makes Safari react to the file differently? Should I be typing in the link differently in Excel? I already tried html (href="www.blah.com").
Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated!
WarrenExcel often gives me problems with hyperlinks. I made a test of a link to an mp3 in a Number table. One cell was the hyperlink, another used the HYPERLINK function. Both worked flawlessly in Numbers. Both opened as text from Excel, just as you saw.
I created an Excel document (using Excel) and pasted in the same link. It, too, opened it as a text file.
I used "Insert Hyperlink" in Excel to create the hyperlink. Same thing.
Looks to be an Excel problem, not one related to Numbers or exporting to Excel. -
Negative numbers in export to excel
Hi,
We have two servers, one (X) without SP1 and the other (Y) with SP1.
When I make export to excel in X, the negative numbers sometimes saved as @ or the actual negative number (e.g. -42), in both cases it is saved as text.
The positive numbers are saved as numbers.
We saw that SAP fixed it in SP1, we tried it on Y, we got that the negative numbers always show (e.g. -42), but all the numbers, positive and negative are saved as text.
We need to see all the actual numbers(without @), and to be saved as numbers (so we can make calculations on them).
Does anyone have any idea?

I have created a document on my iPad using the Numbers app. How can I send this via email to a Windows user so that it opens correctly? I know you can export a Numbers document to Excel from a Mac, but is there a way to do that on an iPad?
same thing really. under the wrench is "Share and Print", you choose email and then choose the format (XL).

I am trying to export my numbers spreadsheet to excel, and I keep receiving an unexpected error message. Has anyone had this happen? This is the first time I have had difficulty doing this.
Haven't seen this. Have you tried: exporting other documents? closing Numbers and relaunching? restarting your Mac?
Perhaps you could share something about the nature of your document. Is it quite complex? Or just a simple one?

Excel Won't Open Numbers Export
I exported a relatively simple Numbers spreadsheet to xlsx format f/u/w Excel 2008 for Mac. Excel can't open the file. The error message says that the file "...might have been damaged or modified from its original format."
What gives?

Ah, so! In your question lurks the answer to my question. The original was an xlsx from Office Mac 2008. When I saved it in Numbers it saved as "mysheet.xlsx.numbers, and when I exported it, Numbers named it mysheet.xlsx.
It turns out that after saving the file in Numbers one has to remove the .xlsx and reopen in Numbers and then export to Excel. The spreadsheet is exported as .xls and Excel can read it.
The exported spreadsheet contains a "Table of Contents" Sheet that reads:

Error exporting to excel: "Couldn't create file /tmp/numbers-export-temp"
I'm trying to export a Numbers spreadsheet to Excel, like I've done a million times before, and suddenly, I'm getting the error in the subject. I've repaired permissions, repaired the drive, the file does not exist in /tmp. I'm baffled. Has anyone seen this before?
I have this problem with a user as well, but not over VPN, where you able to find a fix?

I installed Lion, now in quickbooks when I try to Export to Excel, it says I need to install Microsoft Excel version 10.1.0 -- Why won't it go to Numbers spreadsheet?

The CSV codification is one but not the one issue that can affect the unexpected output of your report.
But if you are viewing correctly the € symbol in your report, and the automatic CSV codification is enabled, sure you are in the usual case that makes more difficult the work of foreign developers and DBAs.
Time before I resolved the wrong CSV output (“â‚ 600.00”) instead of the correct (“$ 600.00”) simply turning ON the automatic codification, but only after being managed many NLS parameters, and database character sets. We have different currency, keyboards, measure units than Americans, and have to read more chapters in documentation books. This is more pain if you are far to domain the English language!.
Ben: you are getting the wrong output using the “ '€' || to_char (billingamount, '99G999D99')” format in the query, Have you checked using “billingamount” in the query, and defining the FML99G999D99 or FMU99G999D99 format in the report column numeric attribute?, You should seen the correct € output in the CSV file although you haven’t defined the automatic codification. -
having a problem with dates when I send my numbers doc to excel. dates are all out and that they have to cut and paste individual entries onto their spreadsheet. Any idea how I can prevent this.

M…oSoft products aren't allowed on my machines but I use LibreOffice which is a clone of Office.
When I export from Numbers to Excel and open the result with LibreOffice, the dates are correctly treated.
To be precise, dates after 01/01/1904 are correctly treated. dates before 01/01/1904 are exported as strings but, as it's flagged during the export process, it's not surprising.

Portals report layouts can be customized. When the user chooses to export
the customized reports to Excel, only the standard layout (hard coded
layout for each report) is exported to Excel and all the customized columns
are not exported.
C&RM is planning to use the portals aging report for performance metrics,
collection and identifying the over 90 items for collection rep. The
standard layout for the portals aging report is missing the BP# and
Collection rep name.
Choosing right click, select all and copying to Excel, the format of the
report is lost.

Pranathi.Hi, I finally found the issue which was causing the numbers stored in text format issue. While exporting data to Excel programatically if any of the cells precede with a special character like -. = etc.. the data which is exported after that starts behaving in a peculiar way. So removal of any such special characters resolves the issue.

Problem in Export to Excel in WAD
Hi,
We are facing problems while using the "export to excel" feature in WAD.
While displaying the report in WEB or even RRMX, the display is fine for all fields of the report. However, when i use the export to excel feature from WAD, the fields with length of 24 characters are not displayed correctly.
It is displayed as "1.4E+23" (this feild displays numbers), whereas the number should be "140000000000000001232007".
Please can someone tell me what the possible problem could be.

Take a copy of template 0ANALYZER, it will have all the components which have the web analyzer.

HFM Report export to Excel changes cell category
Greetings,
we just updgrated to version 11.1.2.2 and are noticing some strange behavior coming out of an some HFM reports we are exporting to Excel.
We are trying to sum up some values and are getting #VALUE!. We have to manually change the category settings of all columns in order to enable any Excel formulas. This occurs when values are "-".
We can manually change Excel to reflect the cells to be numbers but there are a lot of reports to change, and on top of this, the prior version of HFM/Reports did not display that issue.
Pls let me know how to resolve this issue.. Many thanks.Issue is not with HFM, but with FR Studio and version 11.1.2.2.302. Patch is available.
