NVidia randomly kills my X

I've been having this problem for a few weeks now: under load my X hangs, esp when I try to start another program. It won't respond to anything, sometimes I can still move the mouse but that's all. If I had music playing, it'd play to the end of the song and then stop too.
I can still SSH into my box and kill of X, but I can't get it to "give me back my screen and keyboard": I'm stuck at vc/7 with a blank screen and the keyboard won't react. Usually I reboot the computer through SSH. Or when I'm too lazy to start up my backup box, I just do a hard reboot.
This is what I get in the logs:

As you can see, it's pretty randomly. I've been looking through my pacman.log to see if I installed anything special ever since the crashes started, but I can't tell.
I've always used the nVidia drivers from the repos. Up until v66.29 everything was fine. Even on v71.74-1 (installed April 5, 2005) it's been running quite stable. So I guess the crashes aren't originating from the drivers themselves. I haven't changed my kernel in quite a while either, I really have no idea what could be causing this.
My hardware:
AMD AthlonXP 1900+
512MB SDRam
GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB
My software:
xorg 11R6.8.2-2
fluxbox-svn 20050525
kernel v2.6.11 with ck3 patchset
Come to think of it: the NVRM Xid 6 errors have been coming in since May 26. My fluxbox-svn was built the day before. Could that be causing the problem?

Had another crash today.
It seems it always happens when the system is pretty busy doing stuff and I open a new program in the process. The window of the new program seems to kill X. Last time it didn't even crash X at once: first the mouse became very sluggish and the response time was like with Windows 98 reading from a floppy. After 10 seconds or so, it didn't even react at all.
Once again I ssh'ed into the box and kill X and all, but I couldn't get the computer to respond to my keyboard input. I ran "export DISPLAY=0:0" in the ssh-session (I read somewhere that command might give me back my screen and keyboard) but it didn't help. Come to think of it, I should've ran startx too.
Anyway, some more info:

As you can see, the first time it happened was May 24th. So I think it's safe to say it's not the kernel: I've been running it since April 4th pretty much flawlessly.
I really don't know what could be causing this: it happens with 3 different driverversions!

  • Airport randomly kills my router

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the same issue was the other huge airport connection topics because on top of my airport disconnecting randomly, it'll also sometimes kill the router's internet connection for all computers. It's only for a minute, but it's noticeable enough that it's very clear that only when my MBP is on it does it have this issue.
If this is the same issue as the other topics, what's the latest on a fix? I saw that Apple knew of it as early as January 25th.

Ok, nevermind. I decided to give it one last try, and I have no idea why, but now it's working. I've spent two days on this, and all of a sudden it just worked. No errors reading configurations on setup, no glitches in Airport Utility. Network is flawless. I feel like Clark Griswold plugging the Christmas lights in the final time. Nobody waste time reading this. Thanks to the ones who did.

  • Nvidia, usb and intel 5000v chipset - pain redefined?

    Hello,
I am encountering a very strange problem. My system randomly 'kills' USB-devices:
    - keyboard stops responding or behaves wired (like hammering a random button)
    - mouse freezes
    - usb-sound freezes
    - usb-sound produces sometimes noise while moving windows in X around or using the mousewheel
    - usb-devices don't get anymore power (LEDs are off)
I've tested every usb-device on other machines - they are fine. It does not seem to be a some kind of electrical problem (using ferrite cores and active usb-hubs). Further I've tested every usb-related setting in the BIOS.
This lasts until the computer is rebooted - plugging out and in again has no effect.
There are no notifications in dmesg like "usb X-Y: USB disconnect, address Z".
Except for once, I've seen something like "xxx PCI Problems?"...what kind of brought me to the idea, that it might could have something to do with the pci-usb-bridge or the graphicscard. I paid more attention to the interrelation of strange USB-behaviour and "graphic-events": moving around windows with compiz-fusion caused massive noise on the usb-sound card. While moving windows without compiz-fusion (e.g. in fluxbox) caused less till none noise.
I reproduced this behaviour on 2.6.24 and 2.6.25 and the following nvidia drivers 169.12, 169.09, 169.07, 173-something and 171.06 within Arch
...and last  but not least, with Gentoo 2008beta1 and Ubuntu 7.10 (whatever versions of drivers/kernel where installed on that two systems). There are no errors when manually loading the module nvidia or within the xorg-logs.
So...next step was to test another graphics-adapter. I borrowed an ATI X1550 PCI card from a friend - no problems at all (though no 3d acceleration), system was stable.
I decided to give the opensource nv-drivers a chance (just to see what happens). And, as you can guess, the same as with the ATI card: system was stable. (This fact might also exclude the mainboard as source of endless pain).
I am currently running this configuration:
Tyan Tempest S5372LC (Intel 5000V Chipset) with up to date BIOS
    Geforce FX 5500 256mb, 128bit, PCI
I have, for god's sake, no idea what's wrong. I'm down with my nerves.
Is this a bug? Am I just _too_ blind to see something obvious? Or is this something for the X-Files?
Any idea how this could be solved or what the real problem is, is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
Sorry, if its hard to read - it's quite late here and my English is not that good anyway.

    Hello,
according to this list: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L … dix-a.html the FX5500 GPU is supported by the unified driver.
Besides Ubuntu installed the unified driver... assuming that its hardware recognition is right.
I could give the legacy driver a shot, although I'm not sure if "legacy" excludes support for never cards.

  • Hyper-V 2008 R2 Network Connection Drops on a VM

Hyper-V Host:  Dell PowerEdge R620 Server with 8 NIC, 256GB RAM connected to iSCSI SAN running Windows 2008 R2 SP1
Guest Machine(s): Windows 2008R2 or 2012 servers (total of 8 servers)
Symptom:  Windows 2008 R2 server drops the network connection.  Cannot PING or access the server.  Tried rebooting guest server, but still not able to connect.  So changed the network connection via Hyper-V Management console to another
virtual adapter, and the system comes back online immediately.
Logical thinking: The NIC must be bad.  But the problem continued at random times (like once or twice a week - especially in the morning with heavy network traffic load).  So, I switched the network back to the original Virtual NIC, and the system
    runs fine.
So it seems that the Hyper-V randomly "kills" the NIC when it is utilizing heavy I/O load.  And only way to fix it at this time is to swap the virtual NIC (5 sec but need to do manually).  Tried add another NIC to provide additional bandwidth,
    but same problem exists.
Is there some sort of patch available to address this?  Or maybe registry update to IGNORE the heavy I/O on a Guest OS?
I looked into http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2263829/en-us  but this seems to be a different issue as the article states that the machines comes online when rebooted where as that is not the case on my part.

    Hi,
The best place for this is in the Hyper-V forum, this forum if for Virtual Server 2005.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?forum=winserverhyperv
You'll get a lot more Hyper-V eyes on it there.
Also, what type of NICs, updated drivers, teaming, etc?

  • Question regarding over ONE MONTH delivery time?

    Hello all,
I am aware of the W-Series shipping thread, but it hasn't been updated in some time so I wasn't sure it was still active. Others complained there of long and inaccurate delivery times, but others had the inverse experience - so I thought I would ask anyway.
I purchased a W520 online earlier today, but checking my order status tonight reports that the laptop itself is scheduled for a ship date of the first of May. Assuming I allow only a week for the delivery to actually arrive, it means I'm waiting over a month for my purchase to arrive. This seems like a very long time!
When I purchased the laptop, the site reported an estimated ship date of April 17th. Ten days until the hardware ships is resonable for this type of purchase. A thirty day wait is not (especially when there was no warning of backorder or delay when I made the purchase). Had I known upfront the estimated delay would be so bad, I never would have made the purchase. Now I understand that the delivery date provided during purchase is an estimate, and in no way a guarantee, but the delta between the two dates has me concerned. It took quite a bit of research for me to get over the purported SSS issue, and that buying a Lenovo was still a smart move - but once again I'm starting to worry.
My hope is that the estimated ship date listed under my Order Status will change to a date that is closer to the date given during the purchase, and that I won't be waiting a moon cycle to get my new W520. The purchase was made less than twenty-four hours ago, and although Lenovo said it will only take six hours for my Order Status to populate, I'm hoping this is simply a calculation error. Why I am truly worried and am bothering to post this question, however, is that other items I purchased in the same order DO have realistic ship and delivery dates. I ordered a sleeve to accompany my W520, and my Order Status is already reporting that it will ship 4/8 and be delivered 4/13. If this is accurate, and it does seem plausible, it makes it more likely my W520 estimated ship date is also accurate. And that is basically unacceptable.
Has anyone recently purchased/received a W520, and if so how long was the delivery delay? Am I (hopefully) correct in assuming the May first ship date is simply an early calculation by the Order Status page and will be updated to reflect a more realistic ship/delivery date? Has anyone else experienced an issue with early estimates of ship date on their Order Status being inaccurate and abnormally long?
My specs are i7-2640M, 15.6" FHD (1920x1080), Quadro 2000M, 8 GB RAM, 320GB Hard Disk Drive (7200rpm). Everything else was stock.
Thanks in advance for any insight or help. Here is to hoping I won't have to cancel this order because of what should be an easily avoidable issue.
    ~G

We don't see many users showing up here in the forum with new W520 machines right now, which may indicate sales are slow, which naturally makes you wonder why the wait is so long to ship new W520 orders. But someone just caught a store in the Netherlands accidentally featuring the new Lenovo Ivy Bridge/Kepler laptops (also see here) in their online store for sale.
So if the detailed ordering info for the new machines is at the retailer level right now, then Lenovo will likely announce the new laptops on or just after April 29, when Intel is expected to officially release the new Ivy Bridge processors. And it also means Lenovo has probably diverted much of its current production resources to building the new machines for the release.
That may explain the W520 shipping delays, although it's certainly a pain in the rear for anyone who wants to buy one of the current models, before they go out of stock. Anyway, a little buzz is always entertaining--that's certainly what makes the Apple world go round (the Apple forums are rife with about 150 pages of Ivy Bridge buzz, vs. almost nothing here in the W-series forum, so this forum may be asleep).
I'm dying to see test results of Nvidia's killer GTX 680M Kepler-based mobile graphics processor (and workstation sibling) when it finally comes out, although that may take a bit longer (and may only ship in 17" machines). But it should have roughly 3.4 times the performance of the Quadro 2000M.

  • U/I freezes, mouse moves, keyboard ignored, can still remote login

    Hi...
Maybe someone has seen this before. I've been stumped for 9 months with this problem.
Aproximately once a month (or two months), always while using my computer, the whole U/I freezes -- although mouse motion works. All other U/I updates are frozen. The clock freezes, iTunes goes quiet, all dynamic updating of the screen (weather, processor use, etc.) all freezes. Only the mouse pointer moves around.
Every time I can still ssh into the machine from my laptop !! The load average is near zero. I can run "top" and only top itself is consuming processor time. One time I believe I was able to kill a system process, I thought it was CoreGraphics, and regain control at the console. But I must have forgotten, because this hasn't worked lately. Also, one time I thought that after waiting a long time, the screen recovers. But usually I don't have the patience to wait - so haven't confirmed.
Typically I do a shutdown -r to restart at this point. Although last night I was randomly killing system processes and ended up being unable to sudo anymore (would just hang after asking for my password.) So I power cycled.
Being that this happens so infrequently and I can't reproduce at will, I must admit I haven't kept due deligence on what I'm doing. Often it seems I'm launching a program. Last night I was launching EditCSS for the first time. All seemed to freeze instantly the moment it was up. It was at that point I couldn't do anything at the console.
There is absolutely nothing written into the system log during this time.
I have run hardware test over the months. All is okay. My RAM is dealer installed. My G5 has been in the shop previously and extensively diagnosed for an overheating processor in the past (the processor was replaced.) So I assume it has been through full hardware diagnosis a couple times. The U/I freezes were happening before this period and after.
The U/I freezes have also occured through Mac OS X updates. I always am hoping they'll stop after an upgrade, but that hasn't happened.
I'm always running Deja Vu, Little Snitch, Menu Meters, PowerChute, Adium.
Any other suggestions, ideas, or experiences others have had?
    Thanks,
    Erik

Well gentlemen (and ladies, assuming there are some here), to throw another “stumper” into the fire here, I have a late-model 2.3GHz G5 PCI Express Powermac, and I literally have had it running under FULL CPU UTILISATION (distributed.net RC5-72 client) 24x7 since I received it in the fall of last year. It is a refurbished unit, and in January of 2007 I added an ATi Radeon X1900 PCI Express card to it… well, the only time I get these UI freezes (where the only thing responding is the cursor) occurs within UI-related accessing in a game called Tribal Trouble. Specifically, when accessing the options or campaign settings, sometimes everything else locks up (except for the mouse and background music). I have not yet tested with the stock GeFarce 6600 card in it, perhaps I will give that a go. Otherwise, seems to be a common issue with you all.
Oh, just to be sure—are you who are affected by this problem using the AGP or PCI-Express G5 towers?

  • Drivers for g700 questions.

So, last time I tried getting updates for my graphics cards for my g700 laptop from sights other than lenovo, NVidia and Intel respectivly, it crashed my computer and I had to do a fresh install of Windows 8.1 after talking to support. I ddint have a problem with it for a while as the Drivers on the Lenovo websight were fine, but I can tell that they are getting out of date now when attempting to play games. I will have capablities that should be able to run the game on medium, but I have to run it on low and still get <20 frams a second and often dip into <1 a second.
I was wondering if getting updates from Nvidia would kill my laptop again?

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear about your situation and let me inform you that the best option is to install the graphic drivers available in our support website to avoid conflicts as it is tested on the specific model and the released on the website.
Do post us back for further queries.

  • Force-Stopping Apps

Just a general question to those who know how the OS works:
How safe is it to continuously force-stop an application while trying to deal with a problem?
I have been trying to fix this Album issue and, in order to do that, I have tried multiple solutions posted online, almost all of which include stopping Media Storage and clearing its data. With it being a system app, how sure can I be that I can keep killing it as many times as I need without damaging something essential?
The question can be extended to other apps, as well.
How safe is it to randomly kill apps and erase their data? May it have long-term consequences for the performance of the device?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you very much for your reply!
I got concerned because I was repeating the same cycle of actions several times, ending up force-stoppng Media Storage 5 or 6 times. I sincerely hope it's not going to do any damage...

  • [Solved] Do I need a swap partition /swap file?

    Hello Arch Community.
I want to install Arch Linux on my Aspire V5-573G Notebook with 8GB RAM and a 120GB 840 Evo SSD from Samsung. So my question is, do I actually need a swap partition / swap file? I read the arch-wiki pages about swap and suspend-to-disk / suspend-to-ram, and the only thing thats obviously profiting from / needing a swap partition is suspend-to-disk, no other things are mentioned in this regard. Is a swap partition in any other way important?
    Thanks in advance.

No. The OOM killer is pretty darn tweaked these days and usually(!) kills the actual perpetrator. The alternative—disabling memory overcommitting and answering memory requests with an out-of-memory error—can result in unforeseen problems as well: What if it  a system process is trying to allocate a few bytes for some random string, and what if said system process isn't equipped to handle ENOMEM gracefully and crashes, because the default policy on Linux is to overcommit and never answer with out-of-memory errors?
Just trying to play devil's advocate here. I'm not happy with the OOM killer either and I'd rather have a deterministic solution to out-of-memory situations, but I realize that it's probably not an easy problem to solve.

  • XBMC and AMD Radeon issue

Anybody experienced flaky performance with XBMC when using radeon hardware accelerated playback? Mine consistently freezes after about 10 minutes playback. Switching to software rendering solves the problem. But its still rather poo, and I'd love to find a solution.
Im using the Catalyst drivers in version 12.9

I see that s-series have that option, I'm wondering why 'p' doesn't. I've read here: http://news.softpedia.com/news/AMD-Has-Nvidia-Optimus-Killer-Dubbed-Power-Express-186419.shtml that 'p' series does that too. Maybe it's automatically switched in windows there but it's still possible in bios or something. Maybe next bios update will add that option. It would be great if someone from HP reply here.
@ Paul_Tikkanen: it's windows option right? I am sure I will use linux instead.
Which brings me to other question - how's that mobile radeon drivers on linux. I know sandy bridge is supported in linux kernel (2.6.38 now) but radeons are not linux friendly.
The best option would be if one could just switch it in bios manually. I actually don't care about automatic switching.
If it's not available yet, but it's on top of "TODO" list for bios update then without hesitation I'm buying it right now. I would be very unhappy if I would have to buy a laptop without discrete gpu and a month later find out it actually is possible to switch graphics I know I'm worrying too much but it's not a cheap PC so I don't want to make a decission I will regret later.

  • Nvidia GO 7400: Random beryl crash

Since the upgrading to the new NVIDIA drivers I have experienced random crash: when using Beryl X crashes and the computer freezes so I need to manually restart it most of the times (some times I can kill X and resume the system, but most of the times I had to restart it).
I have an NVIDIA GO 7400 which should be supported by the new drivers:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce Go 7400 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 30a5
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
    Memory at d1000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
    Memory at c0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
    Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
I had similar problems with the 9746 driver, but I solved them with the:
    options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"
option in the /etc/modprobe.conf. This is supposed to work with the 7800, but it worked well for me too.
I have already tried every combination of options in the xorg.conf and the option above in the modprobe.conf: it didn't help.
Now I am using the old drivers 9746 drivers which were working well... (still no crashes).
Anyone else experienced these problems with the new drivers?
PS: I am using kdemod with Beryl...
    *** EDIT ***
It seems that this is not 9755 drivers related...

  • Random Shutoff after nvidia video card replacement

This is pertaining to my Macbook Pro 15.4 inch from 2007 running Lion.
A few years ago this MBP completely crapped out. About a year later I received a notification in the mail about this big nvidia lawsuit that would allow me to have my computer fixed if the lawsuit went through. It did eventually and I got my computer fixed. However since installing Lion I've been having trouble with it randomly shutting off, making that high pitch unwinding sound, the sound it makes when you hold the power button for it to hard shut down. I checked into overheating as that seems to be an issue with Lion and MBP's and I run SMC Fan Control to the max and it still shuts off, even at low (relative) temperatures around 140 F.
The weird thing is, without SMC Fan Control the fans won't ever get cranked up, at all. They stay at 2000 rpm. I figured at this point I could rule out overheating, but that's not possible because when I put my computer on ice packs and keep the internals around 80 degrees it runs like a champ. (I'm sure that will work out great in the long run what with the condensation and all). Anyone have any thoughts? I thought about reapplying thermal paste but the temperatures rarely get above 170 when it shuts off.
    Thanks

Macs as late as 2011 that didn't have Lion preinstalled came with two discs, one with the os x, and the other with applications and the AHT.

  • X Freezes at random with NVIDIA driver

    Hi,
I've recently (re)installed Archlinux on my desktop, which is running two GTX 770s in SLI.
At seemingly random moments, the whole system will lock up. Mouse won't move, can't switch to a TTY, nothing. If I press the power button, the HDD light flickers, but no visual output other than that. And the machine doesn't shut down.
Obviously, I want to give my machine a fighting chance, and I go and grab some coffee thinking that all I need to do is wait. But 5 minutes later, nothing has changed.
So after a cold reset, I try again, and everything works as usual, until it happens again.
So, I tried to find a reason for this.
It happened once when I was compiling clang from source with 32 threads (all my cores were at 100%).
It happened once when I was watching a TV show in VLC.
It happened once when I switched tabs in xfce4-settings-manager.
Also, Xorg uses between 7-15% of my CPU at all times. Which seems weird to me.
I kind of assumed it was related to resource usage, but I have nothing to back that.
So.. yeah. I'm at a loss, I have no idea what is causing this, and it's pretty annoying to have to reboot every few hours.
Any help is appreciated, and I'll try my best to help you to help me.
    Thanks.

I'm back, and my machine just froze again.

So, I guess it is an nvidia issue.
What can I do about this?

  • [nVidia Series] P4N Diamond System Randomly Freezes

Please help if you can. I've tried everything.
    System Specs.
    Pentium D 840
    MSI P4N Diamond
    4x512 Kingston DDR-II 667 (2 Matched Pairs)
2x 76Gb WD Raptors in Raid 0 (on SIL controller)

    2x Pioneer 109 DVD+/-R/RW
    Thermaltake Armour Case
    Thermaltake 560W PurePower PSU
    Thermaltake Big Typhoon CPU Cooler
    Windows XP Pro OEM
System freezes randomly. Tends to happen quicker if I reset the system after the initial freeze. Stress testing makes the system freeze quicker. Has frozen while installing XP five or six times. Sometimes freezes while loading (on the welcome screen). Always the same hard lock, everything stops (including audio etc).
I've got the latest bios and latest drivers (from nvidia).
I have tried almost every possible permutation of Bios Settings.
    I have swapped the motherboard.
Tried just a single stick of ram, tried a single stick of another brand and also tried DDR-II 533.
I've tried using both SATA controllers, just a single Raptor (with both drives) and also a single WD1200JB Hard drive.
Tried 3 different 500+ watt PSUs
Tried using a single video card (with both cards)
Tried a P4 650 CPU (just in case the CPU was faulty, I MUST get dual core working though)
I have re-installed XP fresh for every change in hardware configuration.
What else can I do? Has anyone got a setup similar to this working?
Advice would be greatly appreciated. I've spent three days solid on this.

Still going on this one. Tried another PSU.
