NW 7.3 specific - Database partitioning on top of logical partitioning

Hello folks,
In NW 7.3, I would like to know if it is possible to add a specific database partition rule on top of a logical partitioned cube. For example, if I have a LP cube by fiscal year - I would also like to specifically partition all generated cubes at DB level. I could not find any option in the GUI. In addition, each generated cube can be viewed only (cannot be changed in the GUI). Would anybody know if it is possible?
Thank you
Ioan

Fair point! Let me explain more in details what I am looking for - in 7.0x, a cube can be partitioned at the DB level by fiscal period. Let's suppose my cube has only fiscal year 2011 data. If I partition the cube at the DB level by fiscal period in 12 buckets, I will get 12 distinct partitions (E table only) in the database. If the user runs a query on 06/2012, then the DB will search for the data only in the 06/2012 bucket - this is obviously faster than  browsing entire cube (even with indexes).
In 7.3, cubes can be logical partitioned (LP). I created a LP by fiscal year - so far so good. Now, I would like to partition at the DB level each individual cube created by the LP. Right now I could not - this means that my fiscal year 2012 cube will have entire data residing in only 1 large partition, so a 06/2012 query will take longer (in theory).
So my question is --> "Is it possible to partition a cube generated by a LP in fiscal period buckets"? I believe the answers is no right now (Dec 2011).
By the way, all the above is true in a RDBMS environment - this is not a concern for BWA / HANA since data is column based and stored in RAM (not same technology as RDBMS).
I hope this clarifies by question
Thank you
Ioan

  • Finding whole mapping from database file - filesystems - logical volume manager - logical partitions

    Hello,
Trying to make reverse engeneering of database files and their physical carriers on logical partitions ( fdisk ).
And not able to make whole path from filesystem down to partitions with intermediate logical volumes.
    1. select from dba_data_files ...
    2. df -k
to get the listing of filesystems
    3. vgdisplay
    4. lvdisplay
    5. cat /proc/partitions
    6. fdisk /dev/sda -l
       fdisk /dev/sdb -l
Problem I have is that not able to determine which partitions are consisten in logical volumes. And then which logical volumens are consisted in filesystem.
Thank you for hint or direction.

    Hello Wadhah,
Before start the discussion let me explain I am newcommer to Oracle Linux. My genetic with dba experience of Oracle is from IBM UNIX ( AIX 6.1 ) and Oracle 11gr2.
First task is to get the complete picture of one database on Oracle Linux for future maintenance tasks and make database more flexible and
    preparing for more intense work:
    -adding datafiles,
-optimize/replace archive redolog files on separated filesystem from ORACLE_BASE
    - separating auditing log files from $ORACLE_BASE to own filesystem
    - separating diag directory on separated file system ( logging, tracing )
    - adding/enlarging TEMP ts
    - adding/enlarging undo
    - enlarging redo for higher transaction rate ( to reduce number of switched per time perceived in alert_SID.log )
    - adding online redo and control files mirrors
So in this context try to inspect content of the disk space from the highest logical level in V$, DBA views down to fdisk partitions.
The idea was to go in these steps:
    1. select paths of present online redo groups, datafiles, controlfiles, temp, undo
       from V$, dba views
    2. For the paths got from the step 1
locate filesystems and for those filesystems inspect which are on logical volumens and which are directly on partitions.
    3. For all used logical volumes locate the logical partitions and their disks /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, ...

  • Specification database

    Hi Gurus,
    I want to know what is <i>Specification Database</i> .
Anything related to this topic is appreciated .
    Regards ,
    Urjit

    Hi Urjit,
the specification database is used by the Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) module.
You can store different information for a specification like identifier, material assignments, properties (accessible over so called property trees with a link to the SAP class system). It is also possible to store the compositions of a specification out of other specifications. So it is possible to build up product structures down to Pure Substance compositions.
EH&S is using the spec database to store all relevant information for the different components (product safety, industrial hygiene and safety, ...) and to create reports like a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), ....
The main transaction to enter the specification management is CG02.
Also have a look at the SAP Online Help:

  • Move Exchange Server 2010 SP1 databases and log files to another partition

My company has been running Exchange Server 2010 SP1 on virtual machine for almost three years. My colleague created this virtual machine (Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) before Exchange Server installation with following partitions:
    C partition - for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 OS (size 40 GB)
E partition - for Exchange Server 2010 SP1 databases and logs (size 410 GB)
Those two partitions are on the same virtual hard disk "next to one another" so I can not extend C partition which gets filled up with IIS logs (when C partition free space is under 10 GB I am backing up these logs with backup software and afterwards
deleting them thus freeing up space on C partition). I have 2 databases (along with Public Folders) and size of these databases and their logs is around 235 GB.
Is it safe to move these databases and their logs to another partition which I would create on separate virtual hard disk for this purpose only and how much time this process might take since during this process databases
would be dismounted and inaccessible to all users? He made big blunder in my opinion but I have to solve this.

Yes, its safe to move the DB/Logs. You can follow the procedure mentioned in this article to do it via EMC or Shell... http://exchangeserverpro.com/move-exchange-2010-database-folder/
But it depends on various factors on how long it is going take, like size of the database/logs, server performance, storage performance etc...
    Besides this, upgrade Exchange 2010 SP1 to SP3, SP1/SP2 aren't supported anymore! http://blogs.technet.com/b/rmilne/archive/2014/04/09/end-of-exchange-2010-sp2-support.aspx

Which job is taking log Backup of specific database using command?
    Kindly help.

    Hi,
Its generally a bad design to create different jobs for different databases expecially backup and restore if you create you give specific names to the jobs otherwise it would be difficult for you to track. below query will give you littlt help but if you
are running a proc to backup log files and that proc is situated in master database it wont help. If you are running SSIS package it wont help
The column database name will help you in locating the DB name for which job is running
    use msdbgoselect sj.name,
    sj.description,
    jst.database_name,
    sj.date_created,
    sj.date_modified,
    jst.step_name,

  • 3.1EA1 database compare: add options to skip partitions comparison

I just tried the new comparison tool, and it works far better than the old one. Just, I didn't find an option to skip comparing the partitions, I mean how many partitions there are and their names/boundaries. For example if I am comparing a development database to a test one, I don't want to change how many partitions there are or their names, because they could be different - for example we use partitions to implement a rolling window of n days (partitions names are created form the partition dates), and n can be very different form the dev database to the test one and especially on production ones.

Thank you for trying our ea 3.1 release and providing feedback to the database diff utility.

  • List users of specific databases that are not using the default storage quotas

I have an Exchange 2010 SP3 DAG with 4 databases. I am trying to use powershell to find out, per database, which mailboxes are
not using the "mailbox database defaults", which is unlimited in this case (no quotas for Issue warning, Prohibit send, and Prohibit send and receive).
Something like "get-mailbox | where  {$_.UseDatabaseQuotaDefaults -ne $true} will not work because I just want the data for specific databases".
I have also tried "get-mailbox -database nameofdatabase | where {$_.UseDatabaseQuotaDefaults -ne $true} | out-file c:\temp\nameofdatabase.tx" but it lists some users that show unlimited for all categories and others some that have limits on certain
other ones. In short, it is not correct.
    HDL

    Hi,
From your description, I would like to clarify the following thing:
Running the Get-Mailbox -Database MBX1 | Where-Object {$_.usedatabasequotadefaults -eq $false} cmdlet will list all mailboxes who have a custom storage quota. But it only displays the value of ProhibitSendQuota. You can check the values of other storage
    quotas via EMC.
EMC -> Recipient Configuration -> Mailbox -> double click the mailbox -> Mailbox Settings -> Storage Quotas
Hope my clarification can be helpful to you.

  • Get the number of tables of a specific database

Hy, I have to get the number of tables of a specific database. To do this, I connect to the database(mysql) and I get a Connection object.
I do the next with this object:
    DatabaseMetaData dbmd=connection.getMetaData();
    ResultSet tables=dbmd.getTables(null, null, null, null);
Now what to do to get the number of tables of the database?-
Maybe counting the rows of this resultset I would get it
because each table of the database is represented in one row of
    this ResulSet?
    Thank you!!

    Yes. Count them.

  • How to suppress Log Shipping alert for a specific database?

I want to disable log shipping for a database temporarily.   I have disabled the backup job, copy job, and restore job created automatically when log shipping is configured for the database.  However, I cannot disable the Log Shipping alert
job since there are other databases configured for log shipping.   How can I suppress Log Shipping alert for specific database?  I don't want to disable the log shipping for the primary database since it will delete all jobs and history
related to the log shipping configuration at the primary, secondary and monitor server instances.

Too late but this is possible. We just need to set the value threshold_alert_enabled to 0 in the system table msdb.dbo.log_shipping_monitor_primary on the primary server and in msdb.dbo.log_shipping_monitor_secondary on the secondary server.
I just tested it out and it should work.
To test this out, perform the below:-
    1. Run exec master.sys.sp_check_log_shipping_monitor_alert will show the same error message that thresholds have been crossed. This is the same script used in LSAlert job.
Use something like the below command to edit:-
    2. Run the below to change the values:
    update msdb.dbo.log_shipping_monitor_primary
    set threshold_alert_enabled = 0
    where primary_database = 'XYZ'
Run this for all databases that needs to be excluded from monitoring.
    3. Run the script in step 1 again and it should run now.

  • Physical Vs Logical Partitioning

We have 2 million records in the sales infocube for 3 years. We are currently discussing the pros and cons of using Logical partitioning Vs Physical Partitioning. Please give your inputs.

    hi
there are two types of partitioning generally talked about with SAP BW, logical and physical partitioning.
Logical partitioning - instead of having all your data in a single cube, you might break into separate cubes, with each cube holding aspecific year's data, e.g. you could have 5 sales cubes, one for each year 2001 thru 2005.
You would then create a Multi-Provider that allowed you to query all of them together.
A query that needs data from all 5 years would then automatically (you can control this) be split into 5 separate queries, one against each cube, running at the same time. The system automatically merges the results from the 5 queries into a single result set.
So it's easy to see when this could be a benefit. If your queries however are primarily run just for a single year, then you don't receive the benefit of the parallel processing. In non-Oracle DBs, splitting the data like this may still be a benefit by reducing the amount of rows in the fact table that must be read, but does not provide as much value to an Oracle DB since Infocube queries are using a Star_Transformation.
Physical Partitioning - I believe only Oracle and Informix currently support Range partitioning. This is a separately licensed option in Oracle.
Physical partitioning allows you to split an Infocube into smaller pieces. The pieces, or partitions, can only be created by 0FISCPER or 0CALMONTH for an InfoCube (ODSs can be partitioned, but require a DBAs involvement). The DB can then take advantage of this partitioning by "pruning" partitions during a query, e.g. a query only needs data form June 2005
The DB is smart enough to restrict the indices and data it will read to the June 2005 partition. This assumes your query restricts/filters on the partitioning characteristic. It can apply this pruning to a range of partitions as well, e.g. 0FISCPER 001/2005 thru 003/2005 would only look at the 3 partitions.
It is NOTsmart enough, however, to figure out that if your restrict to 0FISCYEAR = 2005, that it should only read 000/2005 thru 016/2005 since 0FISCYEAR is NOT the partitioning characteristic.
An InfoCube MUST be empty in order to physically partition it. At this time, there is no way to add additional partitions thru AWB, so you want to make sure that you create partitions out into the future for at least a of couple of years.
If the base cube is partitioned, any aggregates that contain the partitioning characteristic (0CALMONTH or 0FISCPER) will automatically be partitioned.
In summary, you need to figure out if you want to use physical or logical partitioning on the cube(s), or both, as they are not mutually exclusive.
So you would need to know how the data will be queried, and the volume of data. It would make little sense to partition cubes that will not be very large.
physical partitioning is done at database level and logical partitioning done at data target level.
Cube partitioning with time characteristics 0calmonth Fiscper is physical partitioning.
Logical partitioning is u partition ur cube by year or month that is u divide the cube into different cubes and create a multiprovider on top of it.
    logical Vs physical partitions ?
