NW04s Portal Desktop Requirements

Is there anything out there that describes the minimum or recommended desktop/laptop requirements when being a client computer to the portal. I know that it is a browser application but, I have been using the portal for a few years now (ever since workplace) and it seems like the portal demand on the browser is getting higher and higher. It is now to the point that it takes up to 5 seconds to render portal screens in IE. I know this because I have tested the portal with mercury loadrunner as well as from the desktop perspective. There can be a big differenece. I have testes firefox and it seems faster. I already know that as well...What I need to know is if SAP has a minimum or recommended computer ???

I am aware of the issues with Firefox. For us it's mainly a training issue and a look and feel issue. Other than that it is faster.
Regarding IE6 SP1. We are using SP2 and it is the absolute minimum we can run here because of the many security assigning on windows. Do you know if SP1 is faster than SP2??
You last note is a bit interesting. We fully qualified hostname's when assigning the portal and we rely on DNS rather that the local hosts file. This should be normal for any customer. Are you suggesting that the portal operates better if the hosts file has the portal IP and host name in it ???

Runtime error while creating a Portal Desktop

Hello *,
I want to create a New Portal Desktop in System Administration > Portal display > Desktops & Display Rules (EP7 SP14).
The Portal Content editor is correctly showed when I create de Desktop in the Portal Content folder, BUT, a run time error is showed when I try to do the same under a "New Folder" under the Portal Content Folder.
I am working with Administrator user and the permissions have been defined as follows:
Portal Content
content_admin_role Full Control End User Role Assigner
Everyone Read End User Role Assigner
super_admin_role Owner User Role Assigner
system_admin_role Owner User Role Assigner

What do you mean by a prefix here?
For me the theme implementation is not working either way
- I am not able to create a new desktop (some SAP Error)
- Copying the default desktop into my folder and doing the required changes there.
changed the name/id/theme/default framework page
but when i apply it to a user, doesnt show up.

Customization of New Portal Desktop Framework

My requirement is customization of Default Framework Page based on client specifications and i need to assign that new Desktop Framework page to only end users not for all the users.
The Below steps i did,
I copied the default framework page into my own folder in Content Administration and then i did few changes after that i went to System Admin Role and i added my Own Framework page to Portal Desktop, after that i went to master rule collection in Super Admin role here i created the one rule and i am applying the my own frame work page to user using If USER = XXXX THEN Portal Desktop = XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, after that when i am clicking on APPLY button i am getting below error ERROR_DESKTOP_NOT_FOUND
If any thing i did mistake please let me know, if any one knows step by step solution please help me on this one.

Sun Java Enterprise Portal Desktop creation from scratch

Please see below our request.
1.     What I need?
We are expert in J2EE and relative technologies. We just want a support which helps them to move in a right direction to adopt and excel with SUN JES. Basically, this document expects a guidance to show right direction in creating SUN JES Desktop. Below are the bullet points which try to explain the actual expectation from the response documentation:
     Sun JES Desktop: We require hands on documentation which would assist us in creating a desktop from scratch. This documentation should unveil step by step demonstration of Sun portal desktop creation. The document can assume that all the components with SUN JES are already been installed with default sample desktops.
     Replica of existing Directory server to new Directory server: We would like to understand the procedure involve in creating a replica of existing directory server. We have already exported LDIF file from the existing directory server. But when we are importing it to the directory server installed at our local machine, it is prompting us with an error message that schema for the importing content not available. This suggests that we have not created schema at our local machine. Therefore, we would require an assistance to export all the content from an existing directory server to new directory server along with the schema.
     Change Deployment: It should explain all the required steps involved for re-deployment of the content available with the portal. In other words, if there is a change made in the content of the portal (any JSP, JAR or configurable file) then what are the steps required to re-deploy and reflect the changes on portal?
2.     Current Status
2.1.     SUN JES Installation and Configuration
We are through with initial setup of SUN JES. We have installed entire required component on our local machine (Windows XP) with default configuration for sample desktop which includes:
     Sun Application server
     Sun Directory server
     Sun Access Manager
     Sun Portal server (Instance created in web server)
     Sun Instant messaging
     Sun Web server
The setup also includes configuration of sample portal (myPortal) which has some desktops already created like enterprise, developer and community desktop.
2.2.     Component understanding
We have gone through almost all the documents available under SUN documents. But we felt those were rather high level understanding documents. We have basic understanding of the all the components which come up with SUN JES.
3.     Desktop Example
As we are very new to the SUN JES, we expect something which is very basic to understand. In other words, when we start with any Java or programming language, we use to have Hello World short of program. Similarly, we expect a very simple desktop which just assist in learning steps involved in creation of desktop from scratch. Here, we can assume that all the required components are already being installed and running. Let us take an example:
Suppose we have 4-5 users who belong to different groups. These groups have some defined policies (Something that we use to create with access manager). On the basis of the groups, they are allowed to access the sites available with the portal.
User - A, B, C, D
Group I, II
User-Group Mapping
A, D -> I
B, C -> II
Desktop contents:
Page displaying URL for google.com and myhcl.in
Group I On click of google.com, it should display the page in channel. Whereas, on the click of myhcl.in, it should display a message, quoting You are not authorized to view this page.
Group II - On click of myhcl.in, it should display the page in channel. Whereas, on the click of google.com, it should display a message, quoting You are not authorized to view this page.
Again, in all we just require a very basic desktop, which helps us in understanding the procedure involve in creating a SUN portal desktop. We think that this exercise would cover and help us in understanding all the nitty-gritty involved for learning SUN JES. Please feel free to add anything which you think will help us in learning SUN portal.

I am not sure how much you are comfortable with profile creation for the different users.
while user provisioning, if you are aware of kind of user and can assign the profile then this could be easily done.
what if you don't show the link for unauthorised user instead of showing message that "You are not authorised....."
create two different profile with two different channel having links and assign appropriate profile to the users.

Placing footer on Portal desktop

Guys,
I am having a hard time placing a footer on the Portal Desktop.
I copied "Enterprise" sample portal and customized it to my requirements.however the enterprise portal does not have any footer.
Can anybody tell me how I can place a footer on portal desktop so that It stays at the bottom of page even when scrolling is present.

do you try to add a new channel with width property set to full_bottom ?
this add the new channel at bottom of the page and with full width.
You can add it, in PS7 Enterprise Portal, to all tabs (there is 2x2 tabs) or only in one as you want. for example, to add it to the tab "Home - News"
- connect to psconsole
- select Manage Channels
- select EnterpriseSample DN
- select, in the left tree the NewsContainer channel
- click New channel or container
- create a new Provider Channel (BookmarkProvider ie)
- modifiy the width property to set to full_bottom
I just take a look to Enterprise sample portal and it doesn't take care of full_bottom value... you must modify the file table.jsp in
/var/opt/SUNWportal/portals/portal1/desktop/enterprise_sample/JSPTableContainerProvider/ as the one in
/var/opt/SUNWportal/portals/portal1/desktop/default/JSPTableContainerProvideryou must add something like

<dttable:getColumns id="channels" column="bottom" scope="request"/>
<jsp:include page="tabletopbottom.jsp" flush="true"/>

Issue on Portal desktop object

Hi All
I am getting the following on the portal desktop object.
Error occurred While trying to access desktop:"portal_content/Test/com.bhm.desktop/testDT".the object does not exist or you are not authorized to access. Please contact system administrator
i had check the name of the portal desktop object "testDT" which already exists in the portal content directory and having right permission as "Every One".
Still i am getting this issue , the master rule collection as follows for setting the desktop as follows.
IF Group = testDT
     THEN Portal Desktop = "pcd:portal_content/every_user/general/defaultDesktop
IF User = TST33
    THEN Portal Desktop = "pcd:portal_content/every_user/general/defaultDesktop
IF User = *
    THEN Portal Desktop = "pcd:portal_content/Test/com.bhm.desktop/testDT
Currently the above issue which i mentioned was getting for user "TST56".
Is there any other authorization or permission required to access the portal desktop?.Please help me on this.

Access to portal desktop denied through gateway

I'm trying to get the gateway component to configured and working. I've installed gateway on a separate box from my portal server. When I go to the gateway url (using either https or http) I get prompted to login. Once I submit my user credentials, I get this message:
Access to this resource is denied !!
Contact your administrator
If I enter incorrect user credentials, I get an authentication failed, as expected. So authentication is working, but for some reason, I just can't get to the portal desktop! I ensured that my user account has the Access List service. And I haven't changed any URL allow/deny lists from whatever the default templates were, they still allow *.
Any ideas?

how to impliment sso for applications that i developed.
i created tabs and added the channels to container.
now i wants to that maintain the session .
i.e, once a user enters into portal desktop.and he clicks the tab and
enters user name and password.and when he goes other tab and comes
back then it has to maintain the state.but now here it asking again username
and password

Hello,
It is true for JSR168 portlets that you can't just arbitrarily set parameters on a URL and get access to them inside your portlet- you must use the appropriate APIs on the PortletURL class to set parameters that you can retrieve. This is the only portable (standards-compliant) way to implement the functionality you want.
However, for your particular use-case, you can get the URL parameters from the (non-JSR168) HttpServletRequest object. The only reason you are getting a null object for that is because the attribute name is wrong. This should work:
HttpServletRequest httpRequest = (HttpServletRequest)(request.getAttribute("javax.servlet.request"));
String eventId = httpRequest.getParameter("eventId");

Web Dynpro Java - Light Portal Desktop

Hi Guys... I have a web dynpro java application that I want to display on a Light Portal Desktop, but when I display the iview... it gets cut. I mean I can see only part of my application and there is also a right scroll bar... It looks like the height size of the iview is set to "FIXED" but it's not. I Actually modifed all values for size even on the Light Framework Page used...to FULL_SCREEN. I don't know what's wrong. If I display the same iview using a Default Framework Page it looks fine... I'm using SAP EP 7.00 SP 16.
Is there any restriction for using Web Dynpro iviews for Light Porta Desktops?

Webdynpro content is considered heavy and I dont think we can use it in LPD.

I was trying to install some software on my moms computer and she forgot her login password so I changed the passwords on her login and the root user login to the same password. Ever since I have done that her desktop asks for authorization every time I try to move a file to it which after suppling the password it will copy it instead of move it. I tried changing the root to a different password thinking it may have somthing to do with that but it does the same thing. Any ideas?

It was a permissions problem. My desktop was set to read only. As far as the root user All I did was change its password. Will that activate the root user? I do not see a root user account when I boot in. There is only My login and other to choose from. I booted into the install disk and ran disk utility to correct my permissions and that fixed the desktop. If the root is active how do I deactivate it? I was reading that I need to do this via netinfo manager. Is that correct? If so any layman's terms on how to use this program? Thanks for all the help!!
