OBIEE 11g: Physical Layer acting as level of abstraction against ddl change

Does anyone know of a way to insulate the RPD physical layer from DDL changes on the database. So, for instance a column name changes. Currently we use physical views (PVs) to provide a layer of abstraction but want to see if there is another solution. If the database team changes the name of a column, we want it to be seemless and not require changes within the RPD. There is the physical update in the utility box but this is manual so would not be a solution unless it could be automated. Any ideas on how to handle would be appreciated.

I don't think so there is any utility which captures the column name changes as such.
However you can do these things if your modelling comprises of views or Mviews.
You can ask your DBA to change the actual table column names but not Mviews or Views name.
In your view query you always use alias for each of the column in that way you can retain view columns even if base table column changes.
How ever you should change your view as and when your column name changes..

I am facing a strange issue at a customer's.
They migrated an RPD from 10g to 11.1.1.6.2 using the repository upgrade tool.
Right after the upgrade everything works fine but when we connect online using Admin Tool and perform any change on a business model (even if it's only a Check out / Check in without any modification) the next time we execute a report based on that business model we found that every row of a aggregated column displays the Total SUM.

The problem was that the server was updated to patch 11.1.1.6.2. and Administration Tool was 11.1.1.6.0
We downloaded a new Admin tool from patch 14142868.
This solved all our issues.
It struck me as odd that in previous versions it used to have a warning when a repository from an unsopported version was open with Admin Tool, but not in this case.

Physical layer design in obiee 11g

Hi,
I need a clarification regarding physical layer degin in obiee 11g,I imported Oracle Apps reports ,but could not find any keys there at table level.So should i create keys on the imported table level or at the alias level of the imported tables.

If you import a transaction table you may have keys imported in physical layer but when you going with warehouse table you may not have keys at database level, you define them using join in physical layer.
We have surrogate keys in dwh.

Sum Aggregation Error in Physical & BMM Layer in OBIEE 11g with Essbase 11

Hi everyone,
I'm using OBIEE 11g with Essbase 11 as the data source. I'm using Sample Basic database from the Essbase as my data source. If I'm using the hierarchy for the measures (so I don't flatten the measures), and when I changed the aggregation in both physical and BMM layer from Aggregate_External to Sum, I can't create a report at all from the Answers.
Does anyone encounter the same thing? Any ideas/solution about this? Please help.

But when I queried the dimensions one by one (only single dimension each), no error was shown.
This only happens if I use Sum in the physical and BMM layer. If I use External_Aggregation, these errors do not happen. And if I flatten the measures, these errors also do not happen.

Not able to update row count in Physical Layer..connection failed in OBIEE 11g

I am not able to do Update Row count in the Physical Layer, i am getting an error The Connection has failed. This is in OBIEE 11g Linux env.
I have put the tnsnames.ora file in the below path:

I do not have admin under

Looks like rpd is looking for local tns config... try to use as hostname:port/ServiceName
This should work, just in case not working! stop doing so since it is know issue.

How do I do the BETWEEN Operator functionality in Physical layer if my requirements is like this?
TABLE_1.COLUMN_1 = TABLE_2 is between COLUMN_2 and COLUMN_3

Below is an example diagram, as you can see, FACT TABLE have a join (an arrow one) towards TABLE_1 and TABLE_3. AS for the TABLE_3, this table is the one which I implement with the BETWEEN Operators function in Physical Layer. Also, the arrow in FACT TABLE and TABLE_3 is a red one with no arrow head line.

OBIEE 11g - complex join in physical layer

Hi, I need to create a complex join in the physical layer with join criteria like the following:
fact.fiscal_year = dim.fiscal_year and fact.accounting_period <= dim.accounting_period
Every time I try to do this, I get the nQSError: 37005 Transaction Update Failed message. Any ideas what is going on?

Actually, I (finally) got it to work - wow logical joins are a big pain in the butt in 11g. First off, I had to edit the RPD offline, couldn't get it to work (at all) online.
Next I had to delete the existing joins...there appears to be no way to change an existing FK join into a logical join.
Next created the logical joins as stated in my original post - but had to fiddle with it for about 15 minutes to get it to work. You can NOT click the two columns on the dim side, two columns on the fact side, and then just edit the default formula (which defaults to have = sign between the expressions) - because it creates a FK join, and then you start getting errors. Instead, I had to build the expression from scratch.
All in all, 11g has gotten much less flexible and easy to use in this regard.

i am new to obiee 11g.i have an doubt in setting up the content level setting in BMM layer.i have given details level in fact LTS content tab with help of physical join,i dont get any error but while trying to generate reports i am getting an error "None of the fact table is compatible with the requested level".where i am commiting mistake,do i need to set content llevel based on physical join or logical join scenario.kindly help regarding this.

Hi Nanda,
We set the content level of logical source based on the granularity of the source.
Say, a product hierarchy is like
Category -> Sub Category -> Product
Say one of your dimensions has Product information, for this source set the level as 'Product'
Say there is an aggregated source which has Category information, set the source level as 'Category'.

Implement "Act As" in OBIEE 11g

Hi,
I am trying to implement the 'Act As' in OBIEE 11g using the same xml template that I used to implement the same in OBIEE 10g.
But whenever I am providing the "Target USer" an error message pops up saying " *Invalid XML Payload: XML document must have a top level element.*"

Sometimes the authentication with the user is refused.
Is there a timeout parameter?

I want to view the physical query generated by the report in OBIEE 11g, but in the logs, i can only see these queries: (Just writing the first line to illustrate)

Both these queries are NOT the physical ones.
I have the appropriate log level, and even set it manually from the front end, but I'm unable to view the physical query. Please help!

After running a report in OBIEE, click the Administration Link in the top right corner. New window appears and select "Manage Sessions". Look for the latest time executed that applies to the time you executed your report and click View Logs. Scroll almost to the bottom of the log.
What you are looking for is the generated logic that starts with "*With*"

Copy the whole logic from WITH to the end of the logic (typically ends with Order By) (not the log) and paste it in your query tool. This is based on the physical layer.

Sorting of user list in 'ACT AS' by displayname -OBIEE 11G

Hi,
I have configured 'ACT AS' successfuly in obiee 11g . We have written the following query to populate user name and displayname in the act as drop down .
<getValues>EXECUTE PHYSICAL CONNECTION POOL DAA2.DAA2 select USERNAME, DISPLAYNAME from SIEBEL_USERS </getValues>
With this query the list is getting ssorted by USERNAME .
However, our client expects the user list to be populated in the ascending order of the DISPLAYNAME.
I tried modifying the above query as below in the xml file to implement the same .
<getValues>EXECUTE PHYSICAL CONNECTION POOL DAA2.DAA2 select USERNAME, DISPLAYNAME from SIEBEL_USERS Order by 2 desc </getValues>
But the liste is still getting sorted by USERNAME. Could anyone give some pointers to achieve this requirement ?

Thanks Veeravalli, I did exactly the same. Editing the registry didn't help so I deleted the service from registry and create it again and before that added the following in my installSVC file in the section you mentioned

one of the things I didn't mention though was that when I create the service, I run the installAdmServer_Service.cmd file as "Run as Administrator", only then the service gets installed. Can this be related to the fact that this windows service needs to be run under admin account? or Run as Administrator? I am guessing because I tried various heap sizes and also edited my setDomainEnv.cmd and commEnv.cmd file to use 1024 as heap size it but still didn't work and it is failing may be while loading the class? If that is the case then how to run this services as administrator? Am I missing anything else?

Data level Security issue in obiee 11g

We are trying to implement data level security, let me explain the issue
The requirement is, we have 7 schools and each school has one principle , there will be a Superdintent who has 3 schools under him. so now when each principle logs in to dashboard we have a prompt for school i.e Name of school in that prompt he should see only his school and even the data of that school only which are assigned to him, now when Superdintent logs in he should see all 3 schools in the prompt and data. I have gone through this link (http://www.rittmanmead.com/2012/03/obiee-11g-security-week-row-level-security/) but could not achieve.
We are able to achieve by writing SQL in BMM layer ( LTS Table) so where ever the table is used in dashboards the security is being applied and we are able to see what we want. We want to achieve this by application role, But when we are creating session variables and applying on Application Role its not working. We want to achieve this by using Application role because suppose in other dashboards when the table is not used or pulled in, it will not work.But if we do it using application role its applies to all dashboards and data is resticted. so that when principle or Superdintent logs in automatically its restricts the data.
Below is the SQL which we used in BMM LTS, its working fine. But when the same SQL is applied in Application Role it's not working.
SQL used in session variable -

Physical Joins in OBIEE 11G

Hi All,
I just started 11g and am finding it very hard to understand why the physical join is created from Fact to Dimension and how does this qualify as 1:N.
Can anyone explain if I am missing something.

Hi,
A foreign key repository join is used only to define a Primary Key-Foreign Key Relationships in the Physical Layer.
It consist of a column or a set of columns and refers to the primary key column in another table.
When you create it in the physical diagram, you have to point first the dimension and then the fact table.
When you import keys in a physical schema, the primary key-foreign key joins are automatically defined.
If you want to define other relationship, you have to use a complex join.
And,
In the business model, OBI recommends using complex logical joins instead of foreign key logical joins.
When Complex joins are used in the business layer then they are really acting as placeholders. They allow the OBI Server to decide on which are the best joins define in the Physical Layer to satisfy the request.
In a Dimension, you may have multiple Logical Table sources that all join to one fact table. The OBI Server will then decide the best joins to use to meet the requirements.

OBIEE 11g Report-When drilling down to lower level, totals are not matching

Hi All,
I am creating a report in Analytics 7.9.6.3 , OBIEE 11g - Let’s say Budget Cost/Actual Cost based on the Date Dimension
Have selected the Fiscal Year Dim, Fact Budget Cost, Fact Actual Cost

2012 150 140
Total 250 260
But here when I am drilling down from Year to Quarter and Period - The values are not matching with the totals....

Fiscal Year, Fiscal Quarter Budget Cost and Actual Cost are not returning correct results – When selecting cost's by fiscal year, or filtering on a specific fiscal year, the amount returned does not equal the fiscal year total;
when I am drilling down to Quarter and Period Level the BCost & ACosts are bumping the Numbers as above and not matching with totals
Any suggestions?

Check out the query in both the times.Execute against database and try to sum the data for quarter/period and compare it with Year data.
Just try to differentiate is it a report total that is getting wrong or the data in the database table itself is getting wrong stored.

Can we have Slider at dashboard level? - OBIEE 11g

Hi All,
We are working on OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.3.0), we have one requirement where we want to have dashboard level slider i.e. slider controlling all the graphs on dashboards.
Currently we have around 9 charts in dashboard and all of them have their individual slider (section) for customer. We wan to put this slider at dashboard level. Is there any way we can do it in OBIEE 11g? or any workarounds?

Sliders are only enabled in charts.But not for whole dashboard its not possible.
