Obsolete apps after Maverick?
Which of my current applications running under 10.8 will be obsolete in Maverick?

Unable to update apps after Mavericks install (Unable to update w/this Apple ID)
After updating Mavericks I cannot update the Apps. It says, "Update Unavailable with this Apple ID. This update is not available for this Apple ID either b/c it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled".
Neither of those reasons are accurate. Please advise.
Thank You,
ChrisPerform the following, stopping with the first one which works:
1. Open the Mac App Store's Purchases tab. If you're prompted to accept them into your Apple ID, do so.
2. Move them out of the Applications folder(they may need to be put into the Trash temporarily), and then see if you can download them for free from their individual product pages. If you're asked to buy them, see #3.
3. Click here, contact Apple, and wait for a response.
4. Buy them.

3rd party apps after Mavericks upgrade.
Hi I'm using Mountain Lion right know but would like to upgrade to Mavericks.
Got some 3rd party apps installed ( MS Office , Adobe stuff, Reason, etc. )
Will I have to install it again after upgrade or will it stay like it is ?
Thanks for answers.Should be Ok. The only problem I have with 3rd party software is with Epson Scan, Till Apple fix this I can't use my scanner. I also had to log out of Spotify, and log back in again before it streamed reliably.

MacBook Pro (mid 2010) - Slow Startup and Initial Load of Apps after Mavericks Install
Hello everyone,
Long time Snow Leopard user here. I've been absolutely, 100% thrilled with my MBP's performance / speed since mid 2010. Since installing Mavericks I've noticed two things:
1. Initial on boot load times seem much slower
2. The first time you open an app (Safari, even TextEdit) is far slower than in Snow Leopard.
Now granted, once the computer has been on for about 5 minutes, and once you've had an application open for 1-2 minutes, than performance is okay once again. But it seems that quite literally everytime you do "anything" for the first time since the computer has been turned on you run the risk of a spinning beachball and an extended wait. This simply never happened in Snow Leopard.
I'm not a computer science major but I do understand that when you do something for the first time since a reboot it will need to load new files into the RAM which takes time. However, I've been using this computer since 2010 and have never experienced this behavior / speed / delay, etc... something seems fundamentally different.
For example, even just opening finder, and navigating to the Applications folder results in sluggish behavior the first time. Also, anytime you first click the top menu bar in an application you run the risk of a beachball.
It doesn't seem like a failing hard drive because I can read/write large chunks of data one an app is finally loaded. It's just initially loading the app takes quite literally 10-20 times longer than Snow Leopard. It seems like perhaps Mavericks itself, the core of the new OS was perhaps installed in a bad sector of the HD, but none of my other files are on bad sectors... if that makes sense. Again - I'm not a computer science major so I'm largely just making things up
It also seems as if multitasking and switching between several open apps has seen a decrease in performance. Could it be that perhaps Mavericks RAM management is superior to Snow Leopard, but only if there is a TON of RAM to go around? Could it be as simple as Macs with only 4GB installed should not be allowed to even install Mavericks?
Does this sound normal for Mavericks considering I have a C2D processor, a non SSD, and only 4GB ram? I know those specs are "outdated" for 2014, but keep in mind these were the specs that I've always had and with Snow Leoapard I was consistently thrilled with the speed of the computer.
I suppose my question is: should my strategy be to simply turn the computer on, get a cup of coffee and let everything load and maybe even have my frequently used apps load on startup, etc... and carry on as normal? Does something seem off? Should I invest in a new SSD / RAM upgrade? I know the upgrades couldn't hurt, but the issue is that I was perfectly content until upgrading to Mavericks
I've tried booting into OS X Recovery mode and using the Disk Utility. I've tried Safe Mode. I've included a "EtreCheck" report below. I'm open to any ideas / suggestions.
Thanks!!

I haven't worked on a computer this slow since the early 90's. Even simple things like signing in to this site bring up the beach ball for maybe ten seconds. When opening up apps I often have to wait minutes, and often end up force quitting when they hang. I'm using force quit a dozen or more times a day, when it used to be very rare.
I don't know if it's Mavericks. I installed a new hard drive in November, but the problems really started getting bad since the latest upgrade.
It's not just opening apps. If I have an app open in the background and switch to it I have similar issues. Watching a simple video is often accompanied by stalls and delays - which is really bad as I'm often using the laptop to edit video. It's become unuseable for work.
Perhaps the most frustrating is clicking on a link, only to find Safari decides to complete a previous scroll that it had paused. The page jumps down, and sometimes I end up clicking on a link I didn't want. Then I have to wait for THAT spinning beach ball before I can go back to the previous spinning beach ball.
It can take up to ten minutes to restart. I've tried everything I could find on these pages so far, and nothing has worked.
I thought maybe it was something I've done (and perhaps it is), but I keep seeing others with similar issues. -
Mail Aliases Unavailable in Mail App After Mavericks Upgrade
Upgraded to Mavericks on iMac and now my iCloud aliases are not available in the From field in the Mail app. When I log into iCloud through the browser, they are availalble. Use the same Apple ID on iPad and iPhone and aliases are available in Mail. Any ideas?
Using the same iCloud account that was used prior to upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. Could choose the iCloud alias when composing a new message in Mail prior to upgrading. None of the aliases are showing now. Can choose to send from an alias on iPad, iPhone and when logged into iCloud through a browser. Same account used across all devices.

What happened to the 'Book Look' of the Contact App after Maverick?
Before the instalation of Maverick OS, the Contact App use to have a Book like presentation on my MBP, but now it just appears as it does in iPad or iPhone. Is there anything that can be done, I use to like the previous look.
Thank youIf you select the application in the Applications folder, is below what you see in the part where the version is displayed?

Safari / App Store crashing after mavericks update
Weird stuff after Mavericks update. Internet connection is fine, Chrome works perfect.
Safari attempts to open webpage, but shows 6-9 white boxes surrounded by green border in the upper left hand corner of the page. The webpage will show up, then safari crashes. If I disable Javascript, then smaller boxes show up, but safari is usable.
App Store will also open, but shows nothing.
Disk Utility has a bunch of Open Error 1 and Open Error 5
Any suggestions? Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Preview app retina resolution problems after Mavericks upgrade
Hi everyone!
after upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks, the Preview app (Version 7.0) stops working in Retina resolution.
For instance, a 2500pix graphics now does not fit in the monitor (2880x1800 pix native resolution) when displayed at actual size, i.e. 1 image pixel per 1 screen pixel. It is rendered at twice as low resolution.
As with the previous os x mountain lion, in Mavericks too I am using "Best (Retina)" screen resolution mode in the Display Preferences.
Any idea how to resolve this?
actually, I belive this is some sort of bug of the Preview app.
Is there anyone else having the same issue? If yes, please reply to this
i have a macbook pro retina 15"Hi everyone,
i have a solution!
well at least that worked for me.
It is nothing like a bug or software problem. It is just that after mavericks install for some reason i found a change in my Preview app preferences. So i set it correctly and now everything is back and working correctly.
Go to the Preview Preferences, then choose the "Images" section/tab, then choose "Size on screen equals size on printout" option, and thats it!
Try this out and I hope this works for you too! -
After Mavericks upgrade, apps using iCloud hang
I had earlier posted in the iWork forum about issues using Pages etc after Mavericks upgrade
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5618268?tstart=90
However, the problem is more general. It seems that any app that uses iCloud to store data or documents hangs when trying to reference iCloud.
Not all iCloud services are broken, just apps storing data and documents. For example, Safari bookmarks are still syncing fine over iCloud. I can go to my iPhone and see my current tabs all listed.
However, any app that references iCloud data storage becomes unresponding. This includes TextEdit, iWork suite, Pixelmator, and others.
When I go into the System Preferences, and choose iCloud and look at the "Documents & Data" it is checked on but clicking "options" lists NO apps in the list of apps that store data in iCloud. I have turned this back on and off without change. I have also reinstalled both Pages 4.3 and Pages 5.0.1 and nothing changes here. I have also reinstalled Mavericks (on top of existing) multiple times without any change in this setting.
If I go to manage my iCloud account for Documents & Data I can see apps listed (OS X and iOS) and existing documents that are in my iCloud storage, so the iCloud account is active and working and I can "manage" it from my Mac.
This is a MacPro3,1 and has 10.9 and all updates that have come out since. It was upgraded from 10.8.4 and that was upgraded (with intermediate 10.8.x) from 10.7.x which had been upgraded from 10.6.x) etc.The suggestion by Linc Davis here (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5028839?start=15&tstart=0) fixed the issue for me.

Just about everything on computer is slow as mollases after Mavericks Update. I am very angry because I can't use After Effects at all. It says it's not compatible with this new system. My mail application crashes as soon as I open it. Notification centre is non-existent now and Messages app won't open at all. Other apps such as iBooks, Mail, After Affects, Quick Time Player, Maps, App Store, and a few others won't open at all on this new system. I'm soo angry with Apple as I've never had so many problems with a new OS X. .. I would love to downgrade back to Mountain Lion OS. Anyone with helpful info, please respond. Thanks.

App Store Issues After Mavericks Update
Hi. I upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks yesterday.
When I run the App Store app, it shows that IMovie is available for an update. When I click the update button, I get a message saying my IMac (bought in late 2007) doesn't have the video card requirements for the new version of IMovie. The problem is that every time I run the App Store app, it still lists IMovie as an update. Is there a way to prevent it for continuing to list IMovie as an update?
I also own IWork '09. After I updgraded to Mavericks yesterday, I was able to download the new Pages, Numbers and Keynote for free. Apparently, the download also slightly updated the versions from IWork '09. Today, I ran the App Store app again, and it redownloaded the updated '09 versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote. I have no idea why it downloaded them all again. Is there any way to stop it from doing it again?
Thanks.I had this issue on 3 different macs when upgrading to Mavericks.
I resolved it by deleting the Compressor app and the "Compressor" and "Apple Qmaster" folders from Library\Application Support\, emptying the trash, rebooting the computer and reinstalling from the App Store.
Unfortunately this did delete all of my encoding presets and qmaster cluster/settings but the app is up and running again.
Also Get Info on the Compressor app after reinstalling and disable App Nap.
Good luck! -
After Mavericks upgrade, Mail.app doesn't show messages in Sent Items
I upgraded to Mavericks this morning and Mail.app is not displaying messages in the Sent folder.
I have 2 Gmail accounts set up and the messages are present in the All Mail folder but they're not displayed in Sent. They were definitely there before the upgrade.
Has anyone else seen this happen ? I have TM backups that I can get to but I tried restoring the folder for the account with little success.
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers

If you have problems with Apple Apps after installing Mavericks
I had a problem with Apple Apps after installing Mavericks. They would bounce in the dock but never open. The problem apps I had trouble with were CALENDAR, MAIL, and even APP STORE. I am guessing it has to do with permissions when setting up via iCloud. Here's what I did to make my apps work again after the update:
Restart computer, then immediately hold down OPTION so you can start from the 10.9 RECOVERY DISK.
Run DISK UTILITY, then run REPAIR DISK, then run REPAIR DISK PERMISIONS.
After this, RESTART, then hold COMMAND OPTION P R at the same time until your computer restarts three times.
After it boots up, the apps began working like they should have. That's where your questions about Lion should be posted.
