Obtaining an ODBC link to an Oracle 9.2 database via Instant Client

Hi
Justin Cave, on one of your other forums, has been assisting but as of yet we have not suceeded. He suggested that this forum may be of help.
We are trying to find a way of linking a Microsoft Access database to an Oracle 9.2 database but as of yet have not suceeded can you please help?
The database server we are trying to connect to has a full installation of Oracle 9.2. We have a limited number of workstations that have a fully licensed Oracle client installation (required to use our PDM system). On these workstations we can successfully configure an ODBC connection to the Oracle database on the server and link tables in MS Access. However the majority of our PCs do not have any Oracle client installed, nor do we have any further Oracle client licenses to install with (we do have the installation media for both the server and client software).
We have attempted to use Orcale Instant Client (and ODBC addon) believing that we do not need licenses for this, at both the latest version 11.1.0.70 and at the earliest version we could find 10.1.0.5 but neither was successful in making an ODBC connection to the Oracle 9.2 database. Is this because we are using the wrong version of the Instant Client or is it just because we cannot configure it correctly? Are we correct in believing that we do not need to purchase licenses for Instant Client?
If we are way off the mark, what can you suggest?
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Laurenz,
Firstly, thank you for your prompt response.
Secondly, in answer to some of your questions:
1. How did you install Instant Client? By extracting the downloaded package to a directory on the local HDD (C:) maintaining the subfolder structure.
2. What environment variables did you set? We set TNS_ADMIN using the System Properties Dialog (Environment Variables) to be the folder where Instant Client was installed to (extracted to) i.e. C:\InstantClient_11_1. We also amended the PATH to include this folder using a command prompt and typing PATH=%PATH%;C:\InstantClient_11_1. This works but only until the next reboot when the PATH reverts to the previous value.
3. Did you run the odbc_install script to install the ODBC driver? Yes, we extracted the ODBC add-on into the same folder and ran the ODBC_install.exe script successfully.
4. Does the driver show up in the list of drivers on your system? Yes.
5. Do you get any error messages? When we use v11.1.0.70 and hit the test connection button within ODBC admin, we get a noticiable delay followed by 'Unable to connect... TNS could not resolve the connect identifier'. When we use v10.1.0.5 we cannot even complete the System DSN ODBC configuration.
Our next questions are as follows:
1. Is the TNS_ADMIN environment variable case sensitive and should it have a \ after the folder name?
2. How do we amend the PATH permanently, so it does not revert following reboot?
3. What part does tnsnames.ora play in the configuration. This file currently resides deep within the folder structure on the database server. Should we be copying it to the local C: and placing it in the same folder as Instant Client?
Once again, many thanks for your help.
Yours,
Kevin (and co)

  • SQL Server 2K "Linked Server" to Oracle 9i Release 2 via "Oracle Provider

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up a SQL Server 2000 "Linked Server" to Oracle 9i Release 2 via "Oracle Provider for OLE DB". I have downloaded and installed "Oracle Provider for OLE DB Release 9.2.0.2.0"
My SQL*Net alias/datasource in tnsnames.ora works (It passes the test in "Net 9i Configuration Assistant", I can connect from SQL*Plus, and I can get a Linked server going with the "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle").
When I set up my Linked Server with Oracle Provider for OLE DB, I need to supply the following three fields (with description from the read-only field at the bottom of the "Linked Server Properties)
Product name: (The product name is the OLE DB data source to add as a linked server.)
Data source: (The data source is usually the name of the server or filename.)
Provider string: (This is the entire provider string.)
Here is my tnsnames.ora entry that works as described above (names may have been changed to protect the innocent)...
    PROD9I.XYZ.LOCAL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = nn.nn.nn.nn)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = PROD.ora2.xyz.mno.com)
With every combination of values I have tried for these fields, when I try to use the Linked Server I get this error message...
Could not create an instance of OLE DB provider 'OraOLEDB.Oracle'.
OLE DB error trace [Non-interface error:  CoCreate of DSO for OraOLEDB.Oracle returned 0x80040154].
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thank you,
    Daniel Jameson

    Thanks Norman.
Well, I've made it a step closer. I uninstalled everything Oracle from my machine and reinstalled the 9i stuff, including the Oracle OLE DB Provider. Now, after I set up the linked server, and I try to view the Tables or Views under the Linked Servers, I get this error message...
Error 7399: OLE DB provider 'OraOLEDB.Oracle' reported an error.
    OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'OraOLEDB.Oracle' IDBINitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005:   ].
Does anyone have any idea what this is about? My other Linked Server using the same Oracle SQL*Net alias, but using the Microsoft OLE DB Provider, works fine.

  • Can SAP Kernel 640 (linked OCI_9.2) run Ora DB 9.2 via instant client 10g ?

    Hello,
One of our old system runs a SAP Kernel 640 OCI_920.
    DB server runs Oracle 9.2
We would like to backup it with RMAN to take advantage of backup as saveset with disk_copy_cmd = rman_set
So according to OSS 1101530, we should run at least BrTools 7.00 patch 30 or BRTools 7.10 patch 5.
OSS 849483 and 1060539 state that those Br*Tools can be run with a database server Oracle 9.2 if an Oracle instant client 10g is installed on the Database server.
I wonder if it is possible without upgrading the DB Server to oracle 10g
    1) Can SAP Kernel 640 (linked OCI_9.2) run Ora DB 9.2 via instant client 10g ?
    2) Or should we go to an SAP Kernel 640_EX2 ?
    3) If so, shouldn't Oracle server be upgraded to 10g beforehand ?
I will try to get some clue in the product availibility matrix, but if you already have some piece of information about it, please just shoot !
Thx in advance for you time

  • ODBC setup error for Oracle Client

    Hi,
I'm trying to setup ODBC connection for my Oracle client while installing BO. Following are the steps I followed.
    1. Downloaded the Oracle Client from the link http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/instant-client/index-097480.html . From that downloaded two zip files. “Instant Client Package – Basic Lite" and “Instant Client Package – ODBC”. Extracted the Zip Files to the folder I created under C: as C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2.
    2. Since I'm setting up in ODBC in windows 2008 64-bit R2. I was advised to install 32 bit . So in cmd prompt, from the location C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2, ran odbc_install.
    3.Created the Environment variables as
    i) *TNS_ADMIN - C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2*
    ii) *Oracle_Home - C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2*
iii) *Edited the PATH variable with ;C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2*
    4. Created the tnsnames.ora file in C:\Oracle\instantclient_11_2. Its content are as follows.
    clarity_dev =
         (DESCRIPTION =
         (ADDRESS_LIST =
         (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = claritydev.vip.its.ebay.com )(PORT = 1521))
         (CONNECT_DATA =
         (SID = clarity)
    5. From the folder %windir%\sysWOW64\odbacd32.exe, Opens ODBC Data Source Adminsitartor. In that I found my Oracle in instantclient_11_2 and added following details.
    Data Source Name : claritydev.vip.its.com
    TNS Service Name : clarity_dev
    User Id: clarity1
When I test connect it, I get error *ORA-12154:*
    *     TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified*
Could you please help, I've seen FAQs for this error, but couldn't find anything which solves. Is there any steps I'm missing? I've checked in DB properties. It uses SID not the Service Name.
    Thanks in Advance
    Sreeram

Oh, zip files. Right. I usually use the installer.
Try creating it yourself then and see if that does it. I don't normally use these zip files so I'm not sure if it goes somewhere else with them.

  • Where can I download a free version of Oracle to ODBC link to Oracle 9.20

    Hi
We use a CAD system which is based around an Oracle database version Oracle 9.2. I have an access database that I need to link a table within the CAD system. The access database will be deployed around our buisness to users that do not have a full Oracle install.
I am trying to find a free download version of Oracle and the ODBC links to use on our XP PC's.
    Does one exist?

  • Unix ODBC and Oracle Instant Client

When I dowloaded Oracle 11 Instant client the the zip file does not contain the libsqlora.so.11.1 file. the odbc_update_ini file contains reference to it. I am trying to configure ODBC on HP UX Pa Risc to use the Instant Client. I have downloaded the UnixODBC driver manager from UnixODBC.org. But I can't seem to figure out how to hook up Oracle 11 Instant Client. Everything I have searched for indicates that libsqlora.so.11.1 is required for the driver manager to work. Who develops this, is it Oracle, is it UnixODBC.org? Do I need to use an older version of Oracle Instanct Client?
Thank you in advance for any help.

is it "libsq.." or "libsql.."? Did you check odbc.zip? "libsqora.so.11.1" suppose to be part of odbc.zip. From which location you have downloaded? because in my install location I can see that "libsqora.so.11.1" is part of odbc.zip file and same has been referred by odbc_update_ini file. Download fresh tar(odbc.zip) and recheck!

  • Oracle Instant Client and OUT Parameter of custom type in Stored Procedures

    Hi @ all!
I try to set up a simple client application, that calls a stored procedure via Instant Client from C#.
The stored procedure and assiciated types looks like this:
    TYPE MYVALUE AS OBJECT
          Id      INTEGER,
          value     FLOAT
    TYPE MYVALUELIST AS TABLE OF MYVALUE;
    PROCEDURE ReadValues( ID IN INTEGER,
                                        RESULTSET OUT MYVALUELIST)
                                           IS
...I created an Oracle Command executing this SP and added OracleParameters for ID and (where I got stuck) the RESULTSET.
Is it possible to pass a parameter with a custom type from C# in some way?
    I already tried it as a function with SELECT * FROM TABLE(ReadValues(1));
With my parameter RESULTSET as the RETURN type. But since I use DML within the procedure, this does not work inside of a query...
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Greg!
Sorry, I misunderstood the forum topic then. =(
Anyway, in the example you provided in the link, this is nearly exactly my situation. But there the Oracle.DataAccess.Client is used, where the OracleDBType can be called to initialize an object of type person. I use the instant client libraries called by using System.Data.OracleClient. There is only the OracleType enum, that does not contain an object or something similar.
So I do it right now after trying a bit with a ref cursor parameter and an OracleDataAdapter - the ref cursor is passed back from Oracle as a DataReader, so die DataAdapter is able to use it for a .Fill():
    OracleCommand cmd = new OracleCommand();
    cmd.Parameters.Add("RESULTSET", OracleType.Cursor).Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;
    OracleDataAdapter odr = new OracleDataAdapter(cmd);
    DataTable result = new DataTable();
odr.Fill(result);Within my stored procedure I just added the following OUT parameter:
    PROCEDURE ReadValues( ID IN INTEGER,
                                        RESULTSET OUT sys_refcursor)
                                           IS
    currentlist MYVALUELIST;
... [Adding elements to that list] ...
OPEN resultset for select * from TABLE(currentlist); It works now, but I don't like that solution that much since I'm always afraid that there are lots of opened cursors idyling around. Do I have to close this one explicitly after filling my table by the DataAdapter?

  • Help Using Instant Client ODBC on Linux

I am familiar with using ODBC and visual basic under Windows. I would like to use the Oracle instant client ODBC under Red Hat ES3 within a C or C++ program to access an Oracle database.
Where can I find documentation related to this:
    a) setting up an ODBC connection on Linux
    b) installing the Oracle instant client on Linux
    c) building an application with Oracle instant client ODBC
Am I correct in assuming that any C/C++ ODBC code examples from windows could also be used on Linux.
    Thanks,
    Werner

We are also interested in the very same thing. We are using third party compiler called SIMSCRIPT from CACI which has a module called SDBC for database connectivity. SDBC requires ODBC to be installed/configured. Our application is for Linux, therefore we are interested in using the ODBC driver on Linux clients to connect Oracle database servers on Linux and Sparc. I see the odbc related zip (for 10g) and rpm (for 11g) instant client files on the OTN Instant Client download page. How to install/configure odbc instant client? Is there a document/whitepaper/Metalink Note ?
    Thank you

  • Oracle Instant Client & Oracle 9i Client Co-existence

I am having problems installing Instant client with existing Oracle 9i client. Some of our users have Oracle 9i client already installed. In this case, I need to do the following to make it work.
    1. Add the Instantcclient dir path
    2. Remove oracle_home from registry
    3. SET NLG_LANG and TNS_ADMIN env variables.
The main issue we are facing is with TNS_ADMIN. When you set this variable to Instantcclient dir , then both Oracle 9i and InstantClient 10g started using the tnsnames.ora in instant client dir. This is not acceptable , as some of the might intend to use Oracle 9i network/admin/tnsnames.ora file when they use Oracle 9i ODBC driver.
Can you please tell me how to install/configure Instant client 10g with an existing Oracle 9i client. Also, can you send me the ODBC Connection string thats doesn't use tnsnames.ora.
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thanks

Metalink note 90419.1 describes how to connect to a database without using tnsnames.ora. eg
    sqlplus system/manager@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(Host=tiger5.com)(Port=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=V815)))
I cannot use this method when creating an ODBC DSN. I tried the Oracle9i ODBC driver, the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle but not the Oracle10g instant client ODBC driver. I suspect that the long string exceeds the ODBC specification.
I have had some success using a MS-DOS Batch File to launch an application that required the Oracle7 client long after it had been removed from the registry. This could work for the Oracle10 Instant Client
REM set up the environment variables
REM these are local to this application
    set ORACLE_HOME=%CD%\oracle7client
    set TNS_ADMIN=%ORACLE_HOME%\NETWORK\ADMIN
    SET ORA_NLS32=%ORACLE_HOME%\NLSRTL32\DATA
    set NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
    set API=%ORACLE_HOME%\DBS
    path=%ORACLE_HOME%\BIN;%PATH%
    REM run the application

  • ODBC Driver for Instant Client

    Hello.
First of all I would like to thank Oracle for giving us the Instant Client. It seems to be the solution for making stand-alone client application in a very simple way. Thanks!
Even Though, I need to know if there is a way to download the so called "ODBC Supplement". I suppose it's a Windows ODBC Driver for Instant Client.
    Thanks!

Here's a Registry script to set up a sample 10g-driver data source. After this I used MS Access 2002 to connect to a 9i database. It found all the table names, etc, and read fine from some of them, but others came back with some kind of error such that Access reported the row as already Deleted. I have not done any more research, yet.

As for the ODBC admin program, I used RegMon and FileMon to watch it in action. It loads the 10g setup DLL okay and reads various ODBC values from the registry, then GPF's. • Instant client for Oracle 8.1.6

Hi, I need some previous version of instant client for ODBC. Current version needs at least Oracle 8.1.7. Is it possible to download ODBC instant client with support for 8.1.6?
    Thanks
    Paja

In my testing, the 10g full client will only connect to 8.1.7.4 and later databases. I beleive the 10g Instant Client would have the same restrictions.
If you have an 8.1.6 back end, you would need to install a 9i full client to connect or to purchase a third-party wire-protocol ODBC driver that supports 8.1.6. The Instant Client is a new 10g feature.

I am pretty new to Oracle.
I just installed instant client on my xp workstation, and set up all the variable. I am trying to connect to a Oracle 8i server.
Can instant client connect to Oracle 8i?
    Thank you!

Although the 10.1.0.3 instant client for windows doesn't appear to be "officially out", if I try to download
http://download.oracle.com/otn/nt/instantclient/instantclient-basic-win32-10.1.0.3.zip and similar files, the files do exist.
Unfortunately this version still can't connect to my corporate Oracle database:
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.6.0.0, 64 bit - Production
    With the Partitioning option
    JServer Release 8.1.6.0.0 - Production
Oh well, back to a full client install of Oracle 9i.
Perhaps the official release when its documented on the Instant Client download page will work.
