Obtaining list of currently running Windows NT services

Hello,
I'm writing a network monitoring app using a third party SNMP API and am wondering if there is any way we can retrieve a list of currently running services on Windows box such as IIS, RPC, Workstations, etc.. The MIBs supplied with Microsoft only seem to report statistcs and whether the service is active, instead of if it's started or stopped.
Thanks!
Makoto

I just found the articles on WMI on MSDN. I guess issuing periodical JDBC/ODBC query would do the trick. The boxes we're dealing with are all Windows 2000 servers, so WMI seems to solve the problem.
Thanks for the insight.
mk.
In terms of SNMP one can only hope that the MIB does
what it says it does.
Other than that the Web Management Interface is how
you are supposed to get stuff like that on windows
these days. However that applies to newer OSes only.
Other than that you could always write your own app
and install it on each box.

    That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

    The virtual machine isn't a partition on your hard drive, it's just a file. You can delete the vm by going into Paralells preferences or just drag t to the trash. Bootcamp will partition your hard drive for a Win 7 install.

    kind regards,
    Spattah

    Sorry guys, but I can't work it out.
    from the beginning:
    I've build a windows NT service which is a filelistener. (every 30 seconds it checks whether the directory C:\dropbox contains .txt file. If it does contain this .txt it makes a copy to another directory.)
    This service is built in an VBIS. Other windows service I've made like these do not have any problems with the missing java class. Probably I've used a special adapter which needs this class?
    So, how exactly do I get this class in my classpath for this application?
    I've tried things like:
    C:\jakarta>java -cp jakarta-oro-2.0.8.jar FileListener.exe
    C:\jakarta\src\java\org\apache\oro\io>java -cp GlobFilenameFilter.java FileListener.exeprobably this last part doesn't make any sense?

  • Am currently running Windows 7 (under VMWare Fusion 5.x) on a Macbook Pro. When running Windows 8 Upgrade ***'t, I get a Secure Boot compatibility notification

    The Microsoft Upgrade Assistant identifies several issues related to compatibility of my system with a Windows 8 upgrade which I'm considering on my Macbook Pro (which is runnng OS X 10.8.2).  The message indicates that there is a firmware incompatibility with Microsoft's recently introduced Secure Boot.  Is there a resolution on the Apple side?  If there is not and none can be expected, does this rule out installation of Windows 8 altogether on my system?

    Given that what the MUA is seeing is a virtual computer created by the Fusion environment, the problem lies more in VMWare's realm, rather than Apple's. Which would be the case if you were running on BootCamp instead.
    Am running Fusion 4 and haven't upgraded (long story), so I have no knowledge if the latest update to Fusion 5 already incorporates the Windows 8 profile when creating, updating or running a VM, so as to satisfy MS's paranoid requirements. So, assuming you are running Fusion 5, maybe checking in VMWare's forums may yield more up to date info.
    OTOH, given that MS is betting the whole farm on Win8, would not suprise me in the least that they would shut down virtualization support in all but a special, more expensive, Win8Virtual edition.......
    Edit: BTW, the latest Oracle VirtualBox does incorporate Win8 profiles in both 32 and 64 bit versions, so it would not suprise me that the latest Fusion 5 did as well.

Is there any other way to reformat the drive without reinstalling 7?  Thanks in advance.

  • How to obtain list of running processes

    hi all,
    can someone point me to the documentation that can help me obtain a list of currently running processes. i want to write a java program that can scan through this list to see if certain processes are currently running.
    thanks!

    My answer works fine in unix systems. I try to look for processes that are owned by user "nobody"
    Try this and let me know if you got the answer
         psProc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("/bin/ps -ef");
              psBr = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(psProc.getInputStream()));
              while( (newline = psBr.readLine()) != null) {
              strBuffer.append(newline + " ");
              strToken = new StringTokenizer(strBuffer.toString()," \t");

  • Windows Search Service Crashes on Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi,
    I'm running Windows Search service on a Windows Server 2012 R2 (24GB RAM, 8-core proc). The index catalog has a little over 2 million items (files and folders indexed).
    Every once in a while this service crashes, and either remains in limbo or automatically recovers and restarts the index from zero. I'm trying to find out information about what may be causing the crashes and about how to prevent them. Unfortunately, I don't
    seem to be able to find much about the Windows Search service on Windows Server 2012 R2. So anyone who may have input on this, please chip in.
    Additional info:
    - As mentioned above, the server OS is Windows Server 2012 R2. This is a physical server with 24GB RAM, 8-core proc and over 2TB of storage.
    - This server acts as a DC and as a File Server. In addition to this and Windows Search service, there are no other major services running here
    - Symantec Endpoing protection is installed and running on this server, but I've made sure to exclude the Window Search database from SEP
    Here are some of the errors that are generated when the issue happens:
    The error below may show up in the event logs. If it shows up more than once, the indexing service has likely crashed and won't recover.

    the service stop command failed. The indexing service seems to have picked up where it was (~300K items) and continued indexing.

  • Using Windows Server 2012 Essentials - Creating a virtual PC running Windows 7

    I have a lot to my question, but I am hoping someone out there will be able to answer it, or at least part of it for me.
    My situation is I have a Centon InfiniTV 6 turner card, which means that the computer would need to be running 24x7 to record TV shows.
    Which is ok, I have no problem with that.  I also have a home network with all computers are able to access the recordings.
    I would really like to have some server software running to help keep things better organized and also be able to access the files and stuff remotely if needed.
     This is why I purchased Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials.
    I have not tried to install the tuner card software on the operating system; because it is only for Windows 7 and 8, so I would think it would not work.
    What I want to do is have my Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials running as the primary operating system.
    Then create a virtual PC to run my copy of Windows 7, and have it use the turner card that I have installed on the computer.
    This is the first question, is there any way of doing this?
    From what I have read online is that Essentials does not support virtual PC’s because it does not come with hyper-v.
    Is that something that can be downloaded or purchased separately from Microsoft?
    I have installed the free copy of Oracle Virtual Box, but for some reason that does not show any operating system over 32 bit.
    All of my software is running at 64 bit.  If I can get Virtual Box working, would that fix all my issues?
    Next question, is there any easy way to make a copy of my current running Windows 7 and use that to create a virtual PC running on the server?
    Or will I have to reinstall it, and everything associated with it to make it work correctly?
    I guess the last question would be, is there any way of using a free SSL certificate with the server operating system?
    I have tried a few things that I found online, even followed all the steps from a YouTube video but none seem to work.
    I am not sure if it is worth the $70 per year just to access my computer remotely once or twice a month.
    Any help would be great!  Thanks in advance

    Looking to run windows on my MBPro through Bootcamp or Parallels, but would like to use a downloaded Windows 7, is it possible to install without the Windows Disc?
    Need to set up a workstation on my MBPro that will only run on Windows. Im willing to use Bootcamp or Parallels to see what works best. Need to get this set up this week to enable working from home on my MB - rural and hoping to buy Windows 7 online - am I able to get windows working through either bootcamp or Parallels without the actual Windows disc? Bootcamp set up guide calls for a disc.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    First, the answer to your question is yes, it IS possible to install Windows in Parallels without a disc, using an .iso image file.
    Boot Camp since OS X 10.8 also installs Windows without a disc: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4889551?tstart=0
    Parallels has complete documentation, series of forums, and a knowledgebase. You can also download the current release of Parallels 9 and try it for free for a few weeks before you decide to purchase it.
    The Parallels Desktop for Mac product page: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
    The Desktop for Mac forums: http://forum.parallels.com/forumdisplay.php?58-Parallels-Desktop-for-Mac
    Documentation: http://www.parallels.com/support/desktop-virtualization/desktop/#c12970
    The Knowledgebase for Desktop for Mac: http://kb.parallels.com
    The primary difference between a Boot Camp installation and a Parallels installation is that in the Boot Camp installation, you're installing Windows into a separate partition on your internal mass storage device (hard drive or SSD) and then rebooting your Mac directly into Windows.
    In Parallels, you're always running OS X on the Mac and Parallels is running a Windows virtual machine.
    Not to get too technical here, but it is also possible for Parallels to run an installed Windows Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine. If you're evaluating system performance with a trial copy, that might be the way to go, because you only have to install Windows once on Boot Camp as a dual-boot system, then install Parallels Desktop and run the Boot Camp partition as the virtual machine.
    There is a performance difference between the two, with the Boot Camp Windows installation being faster, but without the convenience of running both Mac and Windows applications simultaneously offered by Parallels. Sometimes that convenience outweighs a performance hit.
    I can't give you more Mavericks and Parallels 9 specifics, because I'm currently running Windows 7 with Parallels 7 on OS X 10.8.5. Parallels 7 will not run on OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
    I've been using Parallels (to run a few old rarely-used WIndows applications with features that would require a steep learning curve and major expense to purchase and learn a similar Mac app) occasionally since Parallels 3 and Windows XP. With each new release of OS X, each new release of Parallels, and each new Windows release, there are ALWAYS 'early adopter' bugs that get worked out over time.

    Did you get the error message "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources error" in Excel 2013?
    Could you give me more detailed information? Which action caused the error message? Such as:
