regardsI believe Oracle Enterprise Linux Administrator Certified Associate Exam Guide (Exams 1z0-402 and 1z0-403) (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 978-0071615440) is finnaly due to be published 5th feb 2010 (ref amazon.co.uk .... not always right) and one assumes this will be the most focused book for this exam.
There's a number of other books that would help with 1z0-402 ... i've covered some of those in previous posts. I'd imagine for 1z0-403 one would have to use a number of different sources if you using the above book.
The exams are multiple choice based, however one assumes students will do practical hands on in their preparation.

  • Linux Documents / Books

    Hello oracle community,
normaly I am working with windows based systems, but it is time for a change. I would like to learn more about Linux and specially about Oracle Enterprise Linux. What I am looking for is not only a book or document about the operation system, but in combination with the installtion and administration under Oracle 11g. I am not new to Oracle, but a beginner when it comes to Linux. Any suggestions ?

KrischerIts possible the book 'Linux Recipes for Oracle DBAs' ISBN13: 978-1-4302-1575-2 et al might be of some help, but it might not be by itself totally suitable for a complete linux newbie. ISBN-13: 978-0072230536 might just be worth it iff you can pick it up really cheap second hand. The certification book Oracle Enterprise Linux Administrator Certified Associate Exam Guide (Exams 1Z0-402 And 1Z0-403) (Paperback) might be worth it if it does finally become available in february (ISBN-13: 978-0071615440); but it might go into too much depth and will be less RDBMS orientated.
Mind you I'd always be inclined to checkout Tommy's advice as I'm usually very inclined to respect it.

  • Lession 3 oca sql fundamental doubts on ora -01858 error

    SELECT last_name, hire_date
       FROM   employees
       WHERE  hire_date = TO_DATE('May 24, 1999', 'fxMonth DD, YYYY');
books mention it will leave a error (ora-01858 which is an non-numeric error )but the statement running perfectly while
by deleting that "fx"-prefix gives an error called ora-01861.
i am confused here??can anyone show me the right way?

    Hi,
The outcome depends on your NLS settings. Probably yours are set to something different than AMERICAN. In you language the month of May may then have a different number of characters(?)
That's why you hit the ORA-01861 with the FX Format Model, and something else without. (Can't see why you should get ORA-01858, though)

  • Book on Oracle/Linux

I have been trying to find a Linux/Oracle book. Has anyone heard
of one? I am trying to avoid all the bboks with a lot of NT
    fluff. Thanks much in advance.

There aren't any out yet, but a couple are in the works. Watch
for them by Q4 of this year.

  • Differences between Linux and Solaris command set

    Hi,
It is complicated to learn Solaris? Is the set of commands the same of Linux?
It is because is more simple for me to find a Linux Admin book than a Solaris book.
    Thanks.
    Lorenzo

BTW: You might want to start with this peace if information:
    http://wwws.sun.com/software/whitepapers/linux/linux_overview.pdf
One remark: this Blue/white paper is written for audience known to Solaris and new to Linux, but usefull the other way around.
Specially table 1 is very usefull !
Good luck, and Welcome as new Solaris Administrator.
    Eric.

  • Configuring Linux to run Oracle

Reading thru Oracle install doc, says to do an "ipcs" to see
stats about MAXMEM etc. My stats show I need changes, Oracle
doc gives no hints about "what to do". Maybe I need to
"somehow" reconfigure Linux Kernel (running latest Red Hat via
Linux Unleashed book), ideas, hints? Thanks! :)

    : Dear John!
: I guess (please correct me and send an eMail to
: [email protected]) that these settings are only for
: Solaris and not for LINUX, because in the installation-Appendix
: for LINUX there is nothing for kernel parameters, but every
    else
    : shortly explained
    : Bye
    : Harti
Someone might have to correct me here, but I think the kernel
configuration is done inside the lilo.conf file by adding a
    following line in:
append="params go here separated by a comma"
then you run lilo, and if lilo does not complain, simply reboot
your Linux. I would also suggest to have a boot disk handy (just
    in case)

  • Question regarding oca

Hii,iam preparing for oca- and i want to know which oracle 9i edition i install ,and will i have to install anything different to practice isql*plus & i want some practice ques from where i get these or which books i follow to do best in my exam iam dumb i do know where to start ,though i know basic queries, plz anyone can give me complete details regarding my certification

Well I shall start from saying that the release for whichyou are prepairing is a pretty old now. Atleast you should start from 10g.Anyways, the software that youw ould be requiring to learn/practise your exam contents can be downloaded from here,
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oracle9i/htdocs/linuxsoft.html
You don't need anything else except this database software to finish all the labs for the exam.
About the books, for OCA,these two books would be enough,
    http://www.amazon.com/OCP-Oracle9i-Database-Fundamentals-Guide/dp/0072195401/ref=pd_sim_b_1
    http://www.amazon.com/OCP-Introduction-Oracle9i-Exam-Guide/dp/0072195371/ref=pd_sim_b_2
If you prepare them well, you dont need any exam dumps to use. Just prepare them well and go for it.

  • Tuning : Inconsistent result between Explain plan VS Execution Time

    Dear Experts,
Need your suggestions belongs to contrary result between Explain plan VS Execution Time
    Environment :_
    Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bit
    PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Production
    CORE     10.2.0.4.0     Production

    There's same query but : 1st query access Loan_Account, 2nd query access Loan_Account_Han
    *1st.*
Query Access Via : Loan_account (Partition Type : Hash (5) with column Contract_Number)
    Explain Plan : cost: 4,432, bytes: 716, cardinality: 2
    Execution Time : 13 seconds
    *2nd.*
    Query Access Via : Loan_Account_Han (Partition Type : List(5) with column Loan_Status)
    Explain Plan : cost:188,447 bytes: 1,661,088, cardinality: 4,719
    Execution Time : 10 seconds
    Note :_
all tables and all indexes belong to the table which included in query has been analyzed.
    my question :
    1. why it could become like this ? I even confusing with Jonathan Lewis Theory : Cost-Based Fundamental Book.
with this result, I even not believed with the result from Explain Plan anymore.
    2. If analyze tables and indexes to update statistics which help CBO to choose the best path as part of Daily Performance Tuning,
is there a way that could do in enviroment 24x7 ?
Note : if original query is needed, I'll posting it here.
Any help is very appreciated and thanks very much.

  • Passed 1Z0-051 -- is the score final?

    Hi All,
I'm pursuing 'Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate' certification. Just finished ONLINE '1Z0-051 Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I'. After exam, I get a summary containing e.g. 'Passing Score 60%' and my actual score, which is 'Pass (67.3%)'.
According to what one can see on the official Oracle website describing 'Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I', 'Passing score subject to change'. How it relates to me? If I got an information after the exam confirming that I passed, could I believe that I really passed, or rather shoud wait for some kind of additional confirmation, as 'Passing score subject to change'?
    Just a little confusion.

    My understanding is:
Your score is final, you have taken an exam where the pass mark for the questions given to you was 60% and you have exceeded that.
    Congratulations and well done!
So I believe your pass is forever (unless one were found to have cheated or have violated a non discloure agreement, in which case one could have the pass voided for that)
Oracle reserves the right at a future time to change the pass mark ar a future time if it is more appropriate, probably due to questions in the exam question pool being harder or easier.
I expect this provision on the website is to avoid someone complaining that they looked on the website before the exam and seen a passmark as 60%,
yet when they came to take it they found they had a exam with a passmark of 62% and they might feel they had a grounds for complaint.
The publishing of a guide pass mark on the oracle website is generally useful when comparing with the exam topics in determining whether to study for or preparedness to take an exam,
but it should be only one indicator; my personal opinion is to aim to study to be able to have a shot at all questions. From memory 1z0-147 Program with PL/SQL has a pass mark of 77% or so,
1z0-402 Enterprise Linux Fundamental of about 57%. To get the grade in the former the examiner is probably trying to ensure accurate understanding of specified exam topics, in the latter
the object might be not to worry so much if the examinee did not understand some of broader width of that exam topics as well. In addition beta testing would have determined a lot of people
were finding it hard to achieve on 1z0-402.

  • Multiple log groups per thread to improve performance with high redo writes

I am reading Pro Oracle 10g RAC on Linux (good book). On p.35 the authors state that they recommend 3-5 redo log groups per thread if there is a "large" amount of redo.
Who does having more redo log groups improve performance? Does oracle paralelize the writes?

redo logs are configured per instance, from experience you need atleast 3 redo log groups per thread to help switch over and sufficient time for archives to complete before reuse of the first redo log group. When you have a large redo log activity there is a potential that redo log groups will switch more often and it is important that archive has completed before an exisiting redo log group can be reused, else the database /instance may hang.
I think that is what the author is referencing here, have sufficient redo log groups (based on the acitivty of your environment) to allow switching and allowing sufficient time for archives to complete.

  • Arch crashed big time

I did a pacman -Syu things were fine. Then I had to shut down because of a storm going thru. when I restarted I got a white screen after arch  and arch fallback startup. So I used duke cd and tried to restart the system. It still does the same thing. So after buying a redhat linux secrets book I tried to use vim and check lilo.conf, fstab, host, and config files they are all blank or standard. I tried "mount" and the four lines start with "none". So I don't know what to start with or do. The book and documentation online assumes you are fixing or learning basics about these files. I need to know what to put in these files. Is there a place that shows a standard file filled in so I can try to write my own files? And what files to write and in what order?. I tried vi etc/lilo.conf and tried to edit the root=sda to root=sda1 saved by :wq and rebooted and checked the file it was back to the way it was. I think I really messed things up. What do I do now???

The wiki is really good place to start with conf file info. Have you read the beginners guide yet?
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide
You might be able to salvage your install with the ftp install disk by installing over the top of your messed up system.

  • N-way joins - interim table

    Hi all,
I got a question concering n-way joins. Just for a better understanding: if I join multiple tables with natural joins, every join creates an interim table with just the specified columns in the select list.
How does that acctually work with "using" and "on" joins. E.g. (copied from oca sql fundamentals book):
    select r.region_name, c.country_name, l.city, d.department_name
    from departments d
    join locations l on (l.location_id=d.location_id)
    join countries c on (c.country_id=l.country_id)
    join regions r on (r.region_id=c.region_id)
I know that the joins will be evaluated from left to right. So we start with departments join locations. How would the interim table look like in this case? Is it also just the a table with d.department_name and l.city? Is this table joined with countries?
    I'm a bit perplexed ...
    Thanks in advance

I don't have the book that you're referring to.
I don't know if the terminology you're using is from there or is your own.
I know that the joins will be evaluated from left to right. So we start with departments join locationsNot true at all.
There might be rules on semantic checking or code evaluation, for example, operator precedence being from left to right:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e17118/conditions001.htm#SQLRF52103
but that is very different from join order and execution plan - that is an optimizer decision based on several factors.
I'm not sure that I like the term "interim table" either.
Each join operation will provide a rowsource but maybe we shouldn't get too hung up on semantics
every join creates an interim table with just the specified columns in the select listNot necessarily. It depends on the execution plan and the operation. But in general, at the very least you're going to have the join column/s and selected columns if relevant to that rowsource.

  • LINUX OCA 1Z0-403 prerequisits

    Hello all
I plan to take the Linux OCA certification.
I already have an LPIC-2 and RHCT.
What do I need to do besides booking and passing the exam?
I see that Oracle has the 1Z0-402 prerequisit but I am not obliged to take it.
How does the process work with Oracle?
I have no experience with Oracle products or with Oracle certification processes?
I find the guidelines on Oracle's website messy and they address more the Oracle DBA certifications.
Has anybody taken this process or can give me any help?
    Regards

RegardsWhat you need to do is apply for a 1z0-402 waiver.
The details are here : [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=149]
By the way I am not an authorative Oracle source.
You have arrived in the middle of a period of transition from Prometric to Pearson VUE. You should do all things Oracle in relatation to Pearson VUE ... do not following any guidelines relating to Prometric.
    0) I am assuming you have never had an Oracle Testing ID (Promteric Number) in relation to any Oracle Exam.
---- Having Duplicate Oracle Testing numbers is a pain:
    1) Get an Oracle Testing Id from Pearson VUE.
How do I register for an exam?
    [http://pearsonvue.com/obtainlogin] { may be different if yo already have Pearosn VUE}
This will get you a Oracle Testing ID. THIS WILL STAY WITH YOU FOR LIFE - DO NOT LOSE IT OR GET DUPLICATES
    2) Fax (or email) a copy of you certificate to [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=149]
... Your Oracle Testing ID will be useful here .... however exceptionally it is possilbe they cant accept it until you've taken an exam.
    3) In terms of the Hands on course procedure that is currently suspended until 28th september or so due to the transiation
See [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=312#2] : How do I sumbit the Hands On Course Requirement Form at Pearson VUE? - which essentially says procedure will be published on 28th september when Hands on Course submission re-opens....
Hope this is of some guidance .....
