Ocal client on kubuntu linux

The university I work for is using Ocal, I have the client working in windows, and had it installed fine and working in Gentoo, but in kubuntu I get these errors upon attempting to install.
The referenced libs are all in place in /usr/lib
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Kubuntu Linux alternative to Win7 on NB505-N508BN

Hi, here's a quick summary on installing Linux on my NB505-N508BN netbook (Win7 Starter, Atom Processor, 2GB RAM), If you're looking to have some fun with the netbook and are bored with Windows, try it out. Linux is free, open source sw and there are various linux packages. I chose Kubuntu (Ubuntu linux packaged by KDE).
Pros: nice alternative to Win 7 (starter or otherwise)
Cons: Battery gets drained faster than in Windows, and if you're looking for long hours of use, linux may not be for you.
From Windows, open a browser, and find/download Kubuntu 11.04, nicknamed "Natty Narwhal". Unzip it and find and run an installer called 'wubi'. It'll install Kubuntu alongside Win 7. You'll have to 'restart' to finish the installation at the end of which you restart once again. This time, hit F12 and you'll have the option to boot from Windows or Kubuntu. Choose Kubuntu. If you really want, you can also download and install an image file onto a USB drive (get the Universal-usb-installer-1.8.6.0.exe; look up Pendrivelinux.com) and run Kubuntu from the usb drive itself.
Raw Kubuntu 11.04 needs tweaks. Open its Rekonq browser, and download Firefox 4 (for Kubuntu/ubuntu)) and install. Then install Flash and Java. You'll need to open a terminal window and type commands to download. Here's the site for Java: http://www.multimediaboom.com/how-to-install-java-in-ubuntu-11-04-natty-narwhal-ppa/ Also, you can improve the Firefox setup by downloading the Oxygen theme: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Oxygen+KDE+%28Firefox+Theme%29?content=117962
Install Skype (the webcam video turns out a bit darker than in the windows version) and Dropbox to share files in the Cloud. For audio and video play, fire up and configure the Amarok and Dragon Player that come with Kubuntu. You'll lose the  Fn-#3 and Fn-#4 key volume control but use a volume control app called KMix instead.
Connect to Wifi by finding your home or hotspot wifi (note: it saves your wifi passwd in sleep/hibernate, but not if you reboot; you have to reenter it).
The file organizer "Dolphin" is the equivalent of Windows Explorer. Find all your Windows files by clicking on Local Disk and drilling down. Kubuntu comes wih free LibreOffice that is like MS Office. I've opened and used Excel and Word files and saved them in MSOffice ('97 - 2000) formats.
Download Avast! anti virus for linux (it's a 1 yr free subscription for a home workstation). Don't get the free AVG anti virus for linux -it doesn't install right. Note: you don't really need antivirus for linux, because linux is open source sw which is no safe haven for viruses. But I transfer files between my linux and windows folders, and so want to prevent ransferring a virus inadvertently). Download the Avast! DEB package: http://www.avast.com/linux-home-edition#tab4 and use right-click to open and install with GDebi package installer. Also setup a firewall (UFW or 'uncomplicated firewall'):  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UncomplicatedFirewall.
The look and feel of Kubuntu linux is quite inuitive, it boots fast, runs fast, even on my netbook with just 2GB RAM and an Atom processor. Right now, I'm posting this from my Firefox browser in Kubuntu. I haven't gone back to Windows except to backup my files onto a portable drive using EaseUS Todo software (since I can't find that sw for linux).
Hope this gives you an idea of what you need to do to setup a linux alternative to Windows. Note: there are other flavors of linux like plain Ubuntu or others like Xubuntu and Edubuntu, openSUSE etc. Check out what they're about. Overall, if you are willing and able, you can have linux up and running and customized in a day or two. It's pretty cool. See some of the screenshots I have posted below as png graphics files.
The only downside I see: the battery doesn't last as long as it did running Win 7 starter, for the same kind of tasks. I think I get about 2/3 rd the number of hours that I would get with Win 7 starter. Someone did a detailed study (http://www.carstenboysenjensen.com/en/articles/linux-distro-battery-test.html) and discovered that other flavors of linux - even supposedly 'lighter' ones, fare no better wrt battery life and that the culprit might be excessive hard drive access (and, consequently, I suspect, the fan, which works harder to keep the drive and other components cool). But otherwise, my Kubuntu 11.04 install on my netbook is fast, stable and great to work with.
    Cheers!

Hi, just a quick update. The 11.04 (K)ubuntu linux distro drains the battery significantly faster than Win 7. I recently learned that the kernel in 11.04 is far more power consuming than kernels used in previous distros such as 10.10 and that it is not clear why or how to overcome this. In this regard, the kernel in 11.04 is a step back from the earlier kernels, which is not a good thing for linux if it is to continue competing with Windows or the Mac's OS, particularly for very mobile devices such as laptops and netbooks that one wants to use unplugged and on battery alone for many hours -that's the whole point of being mobile. This is unfortunate, because Linux is otherwise a very viable and capable OS.
My advice to folks on this forum who still would like to play with linux is to try the older versions such as (K)ubuntu 10.10 or just hang on to Windows 7 for now.

The problem is Oracle usually don't provide direct Oracle Client download except for Windows. You need to download the Server installation file and install the client piece. The download files are rather large.
and is there any other tool which i can install instead of oracle client? It depends on what you plan to do with Oracle client and why you need it.
On alternative is instance client, it has direct download for all supported platform.

  • Redistribution of Oracle Instant Client in a linux distro

    Hello,
Im one of the Archlinux TUs (Trusted Users, who are packagers for the community repository, i mean, a repository of users packages).
I want to know if that is possible and legal to redistribute the oracle-instant-client in a binary form (in a pkg.tar.gz - i.e package ) ?
Some great opensource packages use oracle and it would be great if we could add it to make these packages avaliable to all users.

  • Reg: SVN client for oracle linux

    Hi,
can u plz provide some link to download and instal SVN CLIENT in ORACLE LINUX.
    Thanks,
    Nitesh

They have installed the wrong Linux distro on that desktop.
A server o/s does not provide default support for desktop h/w (like webcams, touchpads, latest video chipsets, etc). Instead, it provides support for server h/w and server environments.
What you should be looking at is Ubuntu 12.10 or 13.04 (see http://www.ubuntu.com/). It is arguably the best Linux desktop distro. I have been using it for over 10 years now doing development and support. Prior to that I used Fedora, but it never did provide a smooth install and out-of-the-box driver support for desktop h/w. And I doubt that this has changed to be better than what Ubuntu supports and provides.
If you do use Ubuntu, consider the 64bit version if your are developing s/w for 64bit Linux - makes development and deployment easier as there are some differences between the 32bit and 64bit kernels.
You will also be able to install 64bit Oracle XE on your desktop (if you do get to that stage and need assistance in getting the XE Redhat RPM installed, post a message on the database general questions forum).

  • Help with Oracle 10g Client Connectivity from Linux to IBM SAN storage

    Hello Oracle Experts,
This is my first post. My client is having oracle 10g database up and running in IBM SAN storage.
We have some NMS tools running in Red Hat Linux version 5. So, these tools require connectivity to Oracle database which is residing in SAN storage connected with the Fibre cables.
How do I establish the connectivity from Linux to SAN storage. If would be glad if you can explain me the steps and also if there is any pre-installation/post-installation, patches and procedures involved.
If it is IP based network we normally give the IP address of the host running the database server. I have no idea about SAN storage connected with Fibre cable.
Please guide me to establish the connectivity from linux 5 to SAN.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    RaviShankar.

    Hi Rajesh,
Actually I will not be touching the Oracle instance SAN box directly. I will only access the database from another machine. I my case it is Linux box.
So, my question is how do you make the Oracle Client in Linux box to connect to Oracle instance running in another non ip based machine SAN storage.Install Oracle client on this Linux machine ..
Make sure you have network connectivity from linux machine to database server. You need to connect to server where db instance is running and you need not to bother about SAN storage.
make tns entry into client $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora file.
Use sqlplus to connect to database using client.

  • Help Using Instant Client ODBC on Linux

I am familiar with using ODBC and visual basic under Windows. I would like to use the Oracle instant client ODBC under Red Hat ES3 within a C or C++ program to access an Oracle database.
Where can I find documentation related to this:
    a) setting up an ODBC connection on Linux
    b) installing the Oracle instant client on Linux
    c) building an application with Oracle instant client ODBC
Am I correct in assuming that any C/C++ ODBC code examples from windows could also be used on Linux.
    Thanks,
    Werner

We are also interested in the very same thing. We are using third party compiler called SIMSCRIPT from CACI which has a module called SDBC for database connectivity. SDBC requires ODBC to be installed/configured. Our application is for Linux, therefore we are interested in using the ODBC driver on Linux clients to connect Oracle database servers on Linux and Sparc. I see the odbc related zip (for 10g) and rpm (for 11g) instant client files on the OTN Instant Client download page. How to install/configure odbc instant client? Is there a document/whitepaper/Metalink Note ?
    Thank you

  • Hyperion Interactive Reporting Web Client Installation in Linux.

    Hi everybody,
Is there any official documentation of how to install Hyperion Interactive Reporting WEB Client in Linux environments ?
I checked Oracle Documentation and I found information about the HIR Desktop Client. But not about the web client.
Note: I need official documentation because of a discussion with security admins.
    Any Help ?
    Regards,
    Gustavo.

The information required to automate (silent) the Insight/Plugin Installation is as follows:
Before going for the Silent Installation of 11.1.1.3 IR Web Client, we need create a Response File and moved the response file to Installer location to automate the Install.
Please follow the below procedure to accomplish the same:
    1. Record a response file use the command "setup /ieinstall -r" (or "setup /ff install -r" if you use Firefox).
    2. The above command will then create a setup.iss file in the <C:\Windows> directory.
    3. Then move that <C:\Windows\Setup.iss> file to the Insight folder, so to resides with the setup.exe.
    4. Then to launch the silent installation, use the command "setup /ieinstall -s" and it will use the options you choose when creating the response file.
    5. You can create a batch file with the command line script as mentioned in Step 4 and keep in the same folder. So that the end user can use the same to automate the install.

  • Help with setting up LDAP Client on Oracle Linux 6.4

    Hi,
I'm having problems getting my Oracle Linux server setup as a ldap client and hoping someone can find where I'm going wrong. We have Oracle/Sun Directory Server 7 with Solaris ldap clients already setup with ssl. We are also using crypt for storing passwords. Here are the steps I have done on the Linux server.
    yum install -y openldap openldap-clients nss-pam-ldapd pam_ldap
Edited the line FORCELEGACY=no to yes in /etc/sysconfig/authconfig
Copied the CA certs to /etc/openldap/cacerts
Ran: authconfig updateall enableldap enableldapauth ldapserver=zldap1.<domain> ldapbasedn="o=<domain>,o=isp" enableldaptls --enableldapstarttls
    Changed pam_password md5 to crypt in /etc/pam_ldap.conf
Restarted /etc/init.d/nslcd and also tried rebooting.
I'm seeing the following errors in messages:
    May 21 08:50:01 ryolinux nslcd[1261]: [c79ea8] ldap_start_tls_s() failed: Connect error (uri="ldap://zldap1.<domain>/")
May 21 08:50:01 ryolinux nslcd[1261]: [c79ea8] failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://zldap1.<domain>/: Connect error
May 21 08:50:01 ryolinux nslcd[1261]: [c79ea8] no available LDAP server found
Here is what my /etc/openldap/ldap.conf file looks like:
    TLS_CACERTDIR /etc/openldap/cacerts
    TLS_REQCERT allow
    URI ldap://zldap1.<domain>/
    BASE o=<domain>,o=isp
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Copy cacerts to /etc/openldap/cacerts
    yum install -y openldap ldap-clients nss-pam-ldapd pam_ldap authconfig sssd
    authconfig enablesssd enablesssdauth enablelocauthorize update
authconfig updateall enableldap enableldapauth ldapserver=zldap1.<domain> ldapbasedn="o=<domain>,o=isp" enableldaptls --enableldapstarttls
    Add line to /etc/sssd/sssd.conf "ldap_tls_reqcert = allow"
    Change /etc/pam_ldap.conf line:
    pam_password md5 --> pam_password crypt
    service sssd restart
