ODBC Driver won't work with text 4k

Hi,
Using ODBC, I am trying to populate a CLOB columnn with text over 4K in size, and I recieve an error. Is there a way I can workaround this by adding the data in chunks or using binding (I am usnure how to do this in ADO).
Thanks
Rich.

Generally, the 4k limitation comes up when you're trying to execute a statement with a really long string in it (i.e. insert into foo ('some 4k+ string') ). Oracle has a limit of 4k for string literals.
The way to get around this for CLOB's is, as you suggest, to execute a statement with bound variables and then bind the 4k+ data to those variables (i.e. insert into foo (?) ), then doing a SQLBindParameter of the 4k string.

  • WD External Drive Won't work with Time Machine or anything else

I am really hoping someone can help me. I have been using Time Machine to backup my hard drive on my Macbook and using a WD drive. Everything worked until right before Christmas. Something happened and I don't know what and I am not sure the last backup worked. I can no longer see the external drive in the finder, but I can see it in Disk Utility and it shows up in About this Mac. When I've had the drive connected today, the disk is turning and the status light is flashing. I can see data being written in the activity monitor which makes me think something is happening with the drive. In Disk Utility, I can eject the drive, but can't select it to do any first aid or other activities. Anyone have any suggestions?

You might want to try resetting your MacBook's FireWire Bus to see if that cures the issue: http://tinyurl.com/7p6jfx.

  • WD 1TB External Hard Drive won't work with Snow Leopard

    Hi all,
I recently purchased a Western Digital 1TB External Hard Drive. It came formatted for Windows with NTFS, but I didn't think this was a problem as the packaging stated it could easily be reformatted for Mac OS. To cut a long story short, it couldn't. When I plugged it in to my Mac (iMac 21" i3) and tried to use Disk Utility to reformat it, partition it, whatever, it just wouldn't work always returning some sort of error. I resorted to using a Gparted Live CD and succesfully formated it to HFS+ but yet when I plugged it into my Mac it wouldn't mount the disk. After following advice to let Disk Utility 'Repair' the disk, this is the output:
    Verify and Repair volume “external”
    Checking non-journaled HFS Plus Volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
Unused node is not erased (node = 1458) [In red]
    Checking catalog file.
Unused node is not erased (node = 5) [In red]
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking catalog hierarchy.
Invalid directory item count [In red]
(It should be 1 instead of 0)
    Checking volume bitmap.
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks [In red]
    Checking volume information.
Invalid volume free block count [In red]
(It should be 244164065 instead of 244148705)
The volume external was found corrupt and needs to be repaired. [In red]
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. [In red]
If anyone knows what this means, and more importantly anything I can do to try and fix this, I would really really appreciate the help!
(Obviously I see it says reformat the disk, but this is easier said than done. Now Gparted crashes when it tries to read it and Disk Utility hangs indefinitely if I try to do anything to it)

I believe the reasons behind this must have something to do with the errors highlighted by the repair process (as copied above)- errors I don't understand.
Disk Utility can't repair NTFS volumes.
If the drive is not seriously damaged ...
    Go to Disk Utility
Click on the external Drive (not on the existing partition)
Click on Partition section in Disk Utility
In the Pane under "Current Scheme" highlite the Partition and then click the "-" (minus) sign down left.
Click on the dropdown "Current Scheme" and choose a matching scheme
On Format choose "Mac OS extended journaled"
    Click "Apply"

  • Fire wire drive won't work with Mac Pro

This is kind of crazy. I just bought a MacPro 2.8 Ghz 8-core. I hook up my OWC Neptune FW drive to it. Nothing. Didn't Apple invent Firewire? It boots just fine on the ten year old G4 running OS 10.4.11. I really am getting a little annoyed with Apple. They control the software, the hardware, and created firewire, but it doesn't work. On the other hand, is it a problem with the FW drive being a couple of years old? Should I be writing OtherWorldComputing instead?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    MGuilfoile

Thank you very much. That clarifies the boot issue. The firmware password is a password that you can only create when booting from your Leopard disk, then set it from the OSX menu.: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
Now, I can see some discussions reporting similar issues:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2008061212382380 (you need membership)
also for certain firewire drives, you need a firmware update:
http://www.neowin.net/news/main/04/11/09/apples-mac-os-x-update-brings-word-of-f irewire-problems (now, this refers to Panther but it is VERY likely that you need to do the same on OSX Leopard. You HAVE updated via the "combo update"? http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10-5-6_ComboUpdate)
NB: could finder be your issue? have you repaired disk permissions with disk utility? (only a thought)

  • My External Hard Drive Won't Work With Final Cut Pro

Hi everyone! I occasionally use my external HDD for Fianl Cut projects, but only when I'm done editing it. While I'm editing the project, I keep it on my SSD. My external HDD has 3 partitions, one for storage, one formatted for windows storage, and the last one is a Mountain Lion Recovery. When I plug in my external HDD and start FCPX, only the recovery partition shows up.. Any ideas? My pimary hard drive storage with the projects is case sensitive, but the recovery is not.. Thanks!
Btw, I blurred the video and took out the names to protect privacy. As you can see, my internal SSD and one partition on my external show up, but the "1TB HDD" partition does not.

I connect my bus-powered HDs (more than one) to the iMac all the time without any problems. I have found, though, that for me the FireWire enclosures work much better (faster and more stable) than the USB2 ones. I have had the USB2 drives freeze my computer once or twice when I connected the HD, but nothing like that has ever happened with the FireWire connections. (I switched the same disk from USB to a FireWire enclosure, so all other elements were kept constant in my experiments.)
One of my HD is in a MacAlly 2.5" enclosure that offers both FireWire and USB2. The other one is in some generic enclosure with only USB2. Both are bus-powered and both work fine.

  • My portable external hard drive won't work with my G5

I have a western digital 120 portable hd. When i connect it to my G5 via USB 2.0 port on the back, my G5 does not recognize it. I bought another WD 160 portable hd and the same thing happens. Is it because the portable hd doesn't have it owns power supply? I hooked it up to my macbookpro and it works fine. Does anyone know why this is happening?
    Thanks for your feedback...

  • Drive won't work with Time Machine

Hey- I am new to the forum, I am sure this was probably asked somewhere else- but
I have a 500G drive that I was using to backup data on my WIN PC. I have about 250G of free space and wanted to activate Time Machine for the iMac backup. But- it tells me I need to reformat my drive. It is Fat32 and I want to share it with the WIN PC. Is there anyway around this- or am I being told I need to buy a new drive? Thanks.

BTW- I want to do the backup before I upgrade to Snow Leopard. After reading all the issues with upgrading in the forum I am having 2nd thoughts messing with the iMac. Thanks.
For most folks, the upgrade has gone without a hitch. Only those with problems post here. And many do, after every major or minor upgrade. An upgrade is, basically, brain surgery on your Mac, performed by the patient! Many of the problems folks have were already there, hiding, until the surgery discovered them.
Still, you should be doing regular backups, not just before an upgrade. All disk drives fail, sooner or later, and other bad stuff happens, too. You risk losing everything. You can now get large external drives for about $100. Well worth the money.

  • 1 of 5 custom tones won't work with 'Text Tone'

I have managed to create 5 custom tones that are now on my iPhone 5. All five of the tones work for the 'Ringtone' but only 4 out of the 5 work for the 'Text Tone'.
This is more about a challenge to find the reason than anything else, because I can get by without the the 5th one working for the 'text tone', but it happens to be the one that is the most relevant for the 'text tone', being "I've gotta get a message to you" by the Bee Gees.
When I select this particular tone for the 'text tone' the phone does not make a sound, but it vibrates as I have the 'Vibration'  setting set to 'Alert'.
So, does anyone want to take up the challenge to solve this situation?

Thanks for the advice. I re-did this particular tone for a length of 25 seconds and it now works. Weird that the other 4 work @ 30 second lengths.  Anyway, thanks again, as I wouldn't have done this without your reply.

Mine crashed once with new update, but working fine.

  • I have a G5 with Tiger to sell and want to erase all my data from it, but the cd drive won't work so I can't use the OS10 start up disk. Answers?

I have a G5 to sell and want to erase all my data from it, but the cd drive won't work so I can't use the OS10 start up disk. Any way to do it?

Do you have another Mac? If so, you can startup this one in "Target Disk Mode" (instructions here) and connect it to another Mac to delete the home folders (or the entire drive, if that's what you want).
One piece of advise, though: after deleting the data, and of course emptying the Trash, it wouldn't hurt to also securely erase the "free space" of the drive (instructions here) before disconnecting the old Mac from the new one. This can be helpful, since "deleted" data is often retrievable with ease unles it's written over after the deletion.

  • My Viewsonic monitor won't work with the Imac using the Mini Port to DVI adapter.

My Viewsonic monitor won't work with the Imac using the Mini Port to DVI adapter. I also tried the HDMI to DVI adapter ane the Mac-Mini with same result. The monitor does work on my older Macbook Pro that has the DVI connector. Is it a Software/Driver issue ?

Should be extremely simple, please carefully read Connect multiple displays to your Mac. If you still have problems then it's probably a cable issue that would be resolved by replacing the adapter cable. You should be using this adapter. If you are using a third party adapter that might be your problem!

    Thanks

Yes, I suspect that it's the virtual drive emulator software you have there. I know nothing about that software and it doesn't look like the Roxio support page even mentions it, so it's probably software old enough that they're not supporting it anymore.
To uninstall any software, I would start with the "Add and Remove Programs" Control Panel. Uninstall it there, and then use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility —
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
Download and install that. Run it and find the drive emulator software on the list and remove it there. And reboot and see if that has successfully removed it.
There is a work around that if we just remove the iTunes CD driver, you'll probably get your drive back, but you'll only be able to rip CDs, you won't be able to burn them without the iTunes CD driver installed. You do have some Pinnacle CD burning software installed. Are you currently using that or is that leftover cruft as well?

Any ideas.  Tried the left shift, control, option and power button sumultaniously, but did not work.

I know that no one has replied yet, but figured out the issue.  I called Applecare and they couldn't figure it out, so sent me to a genuis at the Apple store.  They too couldn't figure it out and told me that it was a firmware issue with the Toshiba dvd external drive.  When I got home, I thought I would try one more thing.  I hooked it up to a powered hub and it works perfectly.  I'm not sure why no one else thought of it, but glad that I did.
