Odd issue in tnsnames.ora

Hi guys,
In my tnsnames.ora, there's a section as below:

)it works perfect, but after i changed local name QDBSP to QDBSP2, when I try to connect to it via sqlplus, I get this:
ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not existwhen i change it back to QDBSP, it works, change to QDBSP2, fail again....
has anyone been in the same situation? or any clues?

ping qdb.lipt.comit seems mentioned hostname is unreachable.
ORA-12545:
     Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
Cause:      The address specified is not valid, or the program being connected to does not exist.
Action:      Ensure the ADDRESS parameters have been entered correctly; the most likely incorrect parameter is the node name. Ensure that the executable for the server exists (perhaps "oracle" is missing.) If the protocol is TCP/IP, edit the TNSNAMES.ORA file to change the host name to a numeric IP address and try again.

We have a 2 node RAC.
DB name   = mbsprd
Instance1 = mbsprd1
Instance2 = mbsprd2I want Instance 1 (mbsprd1) to be used for our OLTP application and Instance 2 (mbsprd2) to be used for another application of DSS nature.
Based on the syntax

Tnsnames.ora file does not seem to load in SQL Developer

I've really tried my best to figure this out on my own ... through the Help, this forum, and Internet in general. I apoligize in advance for having to ask this, since I'm sure this is a common issue. This particular form entry was really close:
Database Connections will not load tnsnames.ora
But, I just can seem to figure out why, or where entries from my tnsnames.ora file are loading into SQL Developer.
- I have the TNS_ADMIN system environment variable defined to the directory where tnsnames.ora is stored - C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\NETWORK\ADMIN.
- I do not see a TNS tab as the forum entry above indicates anywhere in SQL Developer - This may be my problem.
It seems that this issue could be cleared up with better directions on how to import tnsnames.ora entries into SQL Developer. Is there any specific direction on how to get your tnsnames.ora file setup correctly with SQL Developer running on Windows XP - Besides the Help which mentions the setup of TNS_ADMIN, but doesn't really tell you what the expected result is, or where the entries will be, or how to verify this is working?
Any help would be most appreciated.

Using Windows XP/Vista...
After testing in our environment, it appears that SQL Developer 1.5.1 (5440) does in fact ignore the TNS_ADMIN environment variable and ONLY looks in the Oracle Home directory (network/admin). We define a central network location for our tnsnames file and have the tns_admin setup to point there instead of locally for our users.
When selecting to add a new connection (in 1.5.1, it works in previously releases... meaning 1.2.something) and selecting TNS, the drop-down remains empty. However, if I exit SQL Developer and then copy the tnsnames file to the local network/admin directory I can then re-launch SQL Developer and the drop-down is populated. Exiting SQL Developer again, deleting the local copy of tnsnames, and then launching SQL Developer yet again results in the drop-down being empty.
All other Oracle-related applications function as expected (as they have for years) using the TNS_ADMIN environment variable.
Any suggestions/ideas?

How to use ODBC SQLDriverConnect() without using tnsnames.ora file

I have an ODBC application that connects to an Oracle 10g database. Currently, my SQLDriverConnect() function call uses the following connection string:
DRIVER={Oracle in OraClient10g_home1}; DBQ=MyDB.world; DBA=W; UID=foo; PWD=bar
This requires an entry in the tnsnames.ora file that looks like this:

However, I would really like to be able to connect using ODBC without having to create that entry in the tnsnames.ora file. I have tried to substitute the DBQ=MyDB.world with the entire (DESCRIPTION=..... string from the original tnsnames.ora file, but it returns the error:
ORA-12154: TNS: Could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
I have heard others are able to use sqlplus with no tnsnames.ora file and the do specify the entire (DESCRIPTION=.... string on the sqlplus connection string, but is this possible to do using the ODBC SQLDriverConnect() function? If so, do I need to use a different keyword/value pair other than DBQ=?

How would that work in a load balanced configuration? Take a closer look at the tnsnames.ora example I included in my original post. I have 4 ADDRESS= sections to denote 4 servers that are part of the load balanced environment.
Also, I'm not familiar with that syntax, I need to use the syntax supported by the SQLDriverConnect() API function, which looks like this:
DRIVER={Oracle in OraClient10g_home1}; DBQ=MyDB.world; DBA=W; UID=foo; PWD=bar
I don't know as SQLDriverConnect() would accept an alternative syntax. But the more important issue here is the ability to specify those 4 servers in the load balanced configuration as indicated by that tnsnames.ora entry.

Best Practice to configure tnsnames.ora on client of MAA environment in 10g

I have a MAA environment, 1 RAC Primary of 2 nodes and 1 RAC standby of 2 nodes too. I want to configure the tnsnames.ora on clients (we have many clients on each PC) and I need to configure the tnsnames.
I have read some papers but the information is not clear regarding to configure the tnsnames on clients. I just want to have only one entrie on tnsnames that I can use on clients to connect to RAC Primary and/or Standby depending on what site is primary in that moment, I was thinking in something like this:

Where site1 is RAC Primary now, and site2 is standby. But in case of switchover, I want that clients recognize automatically to which site connect.
I was thinking to stop listeners on site that is not primary on that moment.
The question is if this is the best practice on this scenario?.

Hi Louis,
you need to setup a service with clusterware. On both sides: primary and standby.
On primary you start them. On standby the services are also configured but stopped.
In case of switchover or failover, data guard will notice clusterware to bring them up.
You need to use this service name in your clients tnsnames.
Another issue are TCP timeouts, to protect against them you use
outbount_connect_timeout in your sqlnet.ora

TNS_ADMIN (path to tnsnames.ora) using Instant Client IGNORED

Hi,
I developed a simple utility which uses OCCI LIB from 10g release. I'm deploying it with Oracle Instant Client lite libraries.
Everything works fine when tnsnames.ora is present in the same dir. When I move it somewhere else and set TNS_ADMIN to that directory, it doesn't work anymore:
C:\uplob>set TNS_ADMIN=c:\tns;
C:\uplob>echo %tns_admin%
c:\tns;
C:\uplob>uplob u/p@xe 15 input.dat
Exception:12154 ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specif
ied
This seems very simple, but I still cannot determine why TNS_ADMIN is not being taken into account.

I think for Windows ,
You may have to set this in MY-COMPUTER-->Advanced-Env-Variables
and reboot to take effect.

SQL Developer not only reading tnsnames.ora

I have found a very odd behaviour in SQL Developer 1.2 (running on Windows 2000):
I have set TNS_ADMIN to point to a directory on a network drive residing on a Linux host. In this directory there were many backup files of tnsnames.ora created over time whose names followed the pattern tnsnames.ora.<timestamp> or tnsnames.bak or something similar. In SQL Developer in the "New database connection" dialog many TNS-entries showed up multiple times in the "Network alias" listbox. Only after removing all those backup files from the directory the behaviour of SQL Developer was correct and every entry only showed up once. I also found out that even when I moved the backup files to a new directory "tnsnames.bak" under the directory which TNS_ADMIN points to the entries showed up multiple times. After I renamed this directory to bak.tnsnames the behaviour was again correct. In my opinion SQL Developer should only read the file called tnsnames.ora and ignore all other files or directories with similar names.

SQL Developer can't see tnsnames.ora

Hiya. I hope someone can help with this. I installed Oracle instant client (basic lite) on my new Windows 7 machine (32 bit) - yeah, I know Windows 7 is not supported, but my gut feeling is that this isn't the issue I'm having.
I've put my tnsnames.ora file in the same folder as instant client (C:\program files\oracle\instantclient), have created a system environment variable TNS_ADMIN which points to that folder, and have added that folder to the system "path" environment variable. That should do it, right?
When I try to create a new connection in SQL Developer 2.1.0.63, and change my connection type to "tns", I don't see any database connections.
Troubleshooting ideas? Other ways to test that the needed Oracle files are installed properly?

1.2.0 reads TNSNAMES.ORA file multiple times and duplicates values in Alias

Since upgrading to 1.2.0.29.98 (clean install on Win XP SP 2), I have noticed that SQL Developer appears to be reading the TNSNAMES.ORA file multiple times. This results in the Network Alias pop-list on the TNS connection type to have duplicate values, although the number of duplicates for each entry varies widely - from four for the least that I saw and 252 for the most (assuming I counted that right :) ). We have approximately 270 entries in our TNSNAMES.ORA and the first entry in the file appears in the Network Alias list four times and the last entry in the file appears in the list 48 times.
To be honest, I switched to Basic JDBC connections with 1.1 and only noticed the problem because of some network performance issues - I thought that SQL Developer had hung and I switched on the debugging and could see that it was looping through the TNSNAMES.ORA file. Now that the network performance issues have been resolved, it still takes a little while to open the new connection window, but it is liveable, so I don't know whether the problem is 1.2 specific or not.

I assume from a bit of testing, that "each tns file on the system" means each file in the TNS_ADMIN location that starts with TNSNAMES.ORA.
I set my TNS_ADMIN to a local location and copied the current TNSNAMES.ORA from the network location (and chopped it down to a handful of entries). When I restarted SQL Developer I only had a single copy of each alias. If I copied TNSNAMES.ORA to "Copy of TNSNAMES.ORA" I still only had a single copy of each alias. If I copied TNSNAMES.ORA to TNSNAMES.ORA.TXT I then had two copies of each alias.
Unfortunately, I don't have any say in the maintenance of the network TNS_ADMIN location and it has almost 200 backup copies of the tns file, typically named TNSNAMES.ORA.YYYYMMDD.
My TNS_ADMIN setting is done as a Windows environment variable. I do not have any TNS_ADMIN setting in my registry.

Should dbassist create an entry in my tnsnames.ora file?

I just created an instance on Solaris with dbassist and the sample minimal.rsp response file (8.1.7). I was surprised to note that no entry was created in the tnsnames.ora file as I would expect (it does create an entry on Windows platforms). Is this typical behavior? I did not see any option in the response file to do this. Another thing I notice was that it created an entry in the oratab file with the auto start flag set to n. Is there a way to make dbassist set that flag to y during install or am I going to have to sed it afterwards?

to use the external address. The packets that reach the server
do not contain the external address by the time they get to the
server. The firewall performs NAT on the external address
translating it to the internal address on the way in and
translating the internal address to the external address on the
way out.
2. If I change the entries in the LISTENER.ora file from
<production> to <172.168.0.101>, then
clients cannot connect to the database. Is this a normal
thing? I remember that I could use
internal IP addresses in ORACLE7 and 8 in the LISTENER.ORA
file.There must be something wrong with your DNS. If you run the
command "ping production" what address do you get? The external
address? If you attempt to ping 172.168.0.101 from a client that
can not connect, what do you get? What if you run the
command "tracert production"? What path do the packets take to
the server.
There sounds like there is some network topology issues in that
the clients can't get directly to the internal address but are
instead going through the firewall to get to the database. I
would suggest using a sniffer on the database (with the
appropriate authorization) to see what's going on and get a
network admin involved.

SQL developer cannot see connection info from tnsnames.ora file

Greetings All,
I have been using sql developer for a while. Currently on 3.0.04.34.
I have 16 database connections.
Everything was working fine until yesterday.
Today when I tried to connect to a database from the list of connections I am getting following error:
Invalid connection information specified. Verify url format for specified driver.
When I pull up the property for this connection -connection type is still TNS, Netwrok Alias is now greyed out and what was in Netwrok Alias has shifted to Connect Identifier.
When I try to create a new connection I do not see entry from tnsnames.ora file for the databse I am trying to connect to in the Network Alias drop down list.
I can connect to this database from sqlplus.
Has anyone seen this behavior? Does any one know the fix for this?

Hi,
Maybe your preference settings got corrupted, or the Tnsnames.ora file got moved to somewhere SQL Developer can't find it.
Are you using either:
1. Tools|Preferences|Database|Advanced|Tnsnames Directory, or a
2. TNS_ADMIN environment variable
to point to your Tnsnames? Having one of those should enable the Network Alias drop-down list to get populated. Otherwise, if the values moved to Connection Identifier are correct, then you won't be to connect in that mode without also having an Oracle client installed with an 11.1 JDBC thick driver (ocijdbc11.dll).
If there is no issue with the Tnsnames. ora location, it might be a good idea to use Export Connections to make a backup of your connections. Then you can try deleting the connections from SQL Developer and re-importing them. Even if that doesn't fix the problem, you should be no worse off.

Linked Servers - Sql server 2005 to connect to Oracle 11g using ldap.ora instead of tnsnames.ora

We have a SQL Server 2005 64bit box that needs a linked server created to Oracle 11g 64bit box. I have all the Oracle client software installed and can successfully connect to the Oracle database using SQL+ on the SQL Server 2005 64bit box. When I create
the linked server and select the OraOledb.Oracle provider, I get the TNSNames error. The Oracle server does not use tnsnames.ora it uses OLAP.ora to resolve. How do I get Linked server to stop trying to connect via TNSNames and use the OLAP.ora file instead?
I can't find any articles for this specific issues. All Oracle examples tell you to use TNSNAMES. The Oracle server is not under my companies control so I can not force the vendor to use tnsnames instead of OLAP.

What are short term and long term solutions.
Short term solution can be to put VIPs of both nodes of the RAC in DNS and let DNS do dynamic load balancing (round robin).
One of the long term solutions can be to have one directory mapped to all clients which contains tnsnames.ora and have TNS_ADMIN on client side pointed towards this directory containing tnsnames.ora
What are your recommendations? Please suggest.

I'd strongly suggest looking in to
migrating to Oracle Internet Directory rather than
having 2000 client machines relying on localnaming.
That is a very good advice. Considering there are no
remaining network issues. And, since the machines are connecting to the database through the network, there should be limited network issues to contend with.
I also support Justin's advice. Especially since the use of Oracle's LDAP (installed as the Single Sign-on components of the App Server 10.1.2 infrastructire) is included in the 10g database license fee as per the Licensing manual.
If there are significant Oracle7 and Oracle8/8i installations still around, then parallel LDAP with ONAMES.

Strange Behaviour of TNSNAMES.ora file

Hello Guys,
Now we have 2 database servers with different IP obviously and same SID with 9i and 10g databases.
Our application is developed in forms 6i. Before 10g server, application was using 9i database server as its database and there were no problems. Developer client is installed at user's machine and they were having no connectivity issue with 9i database. Now after updation of database server. We have changed the IP address of tnsnames.ora file at every client machine. Now there is no information at client ends to connect with database 9i, but it must connect with 10g.
The client is still connecting with 9i database which is really strange. Just want to ask if connection information also need to be changes in some other file other then tnsnames.ora file.

This is what making me worried, how the application is connecting with oracle 9i when TNS has no information about 9i server.
Well ifi we directly connect form builder with DB it does connects with 10g database, while the application is not. I have tried this.

Figuring out location of tnsnames.ora and listener.ora file.

Hello.
Is there a way to figure out what my oracle instance is reading in terms of tnsnames.ora and/or listener.ora file? According to the 10g docs, they can be found in a few places:
1. $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
2. $TNS_ADMIN
3. in a global configuration directory, on solaris it is /var/opt/oracle.
How would I know which one my instance/lsnrctl is reading, aside from checking out differences in behavior?
Plus, how would I change where to look for the file?

On Solaris you can use 'truss' on the binary and grep for all the open() calls to see exactly which files are being used or tested for in order. I had an issue once where a tnsnames.ora was being used and it turned out to be $HOME/.tnsnames.ora (IIRC). There are similar calls under Linux (strace).
