The NC6000 doesn't use a SATA hard drive, uses an IDE unit.

Compaq F750 Hard Drive SATA or what? Strange problem

Hi everyone. Thanks for reading my post.
I purchased a SATA WD Scorpio Black 7200RPM, 320 GB to replace the 120GB OEM Hitachi in my laptop. Researched it well (i thought!) and have still run into a problem.
While both are SATA drives the copper pins on the HItachi drive stick out with no plastic backer behind them and they kinda slide down into grooves on the connector in the lap top. Kinda snap together kinda of like you are interlacing your fingers.
The WD drive is standard with contact type copper pins and they don't make a conncetion. The computer says no hard drive.
The PN for the WD is WD3200BEKT
The PN for the HItachi OEM is HTS542512K9SA00. All the online pics I can find of the Hitachi show standard SATA but mine is definitely not! Odd ball stuff.
Anyone ever heard of this? I have pics but don't know how to link or post them here.

not even 15,000 RPM SAS drives can fully saturate a 1.5 Gb/sec channel by themselves. the best i've seen in my own tests is just over 130 MB/sec read and write. SATA 6.0 Gb/sec specs are pointless even for the best spinning platter hard drives, even in RAID 0.
with that said, the K100 uses a SATA 3.0 Gb/sec controller. while SATA 6.0 Gb/sec hard drives are backward compatible with 3.0 controllers, the best you'll see is around 80~110 MB/sec on any drives you're considering.
if the WD 640 GB is on sale and it fits your needs, buy it.

New hard drive - SATA or PATA?

Grateful for a bit of advice. I want to upgrade the hard drive on my 17" G4 PB 1.67gHz. I read somewhere that the new drive should be PATA or IDE, not SATA. Most new drives for sale seem to be SATA - there's much more choice, anyway, and SATA drives seem to go up to 320Gb. For example, I really like the sound of the 7,200rpm Western Digital Scorpio 320gb drive. The biggest IDE drive I can find for sale in the UK is 250Gb, again by Western Digital.
Is it true that a SATA drive won't work in a Powerbook G4?

P6N SLI Platinum mobo with hard drive/sata crashes

i've experienced a (now recurring) problem with my hardware over the past several months. i've come home from work twice now, once about 2 months ago, the other just today to find my computer stuck at the windows xp loading screen. if i tried to reboot the system, it would hang at that point, until i disconnected the offending drive/sata channel (i had 3 hard drives in my system, 1 150gb drive with operating system, ect, and 2 500gb drives for storage (mp3s, video, ect). i've narrowed the problem down to either the motherboard or the sata cables (i don't have spare cables to test with), as the hard drives work perfectly in an external usb enclosure. any ideas of what could be wrong?

intel core 2 duo E6600 2.4ghz processor
crucial ballistix DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) 2 gb SDRAM
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS video card

in brief,
1- if you have one memory it should be in slot 1, closest to cpu, if two X 1Gb then they should be in one and three.
2- do you know what is virtual memory if so have you made adjustment or not.
3- you have freeze due to wrong bios setting till we get a good picture of your bios difficult to pin point the mistake, so use either a digi cam or web cam and take shoots of your bios then we can pin point the mistakes

HArd Drive SATA 3?

I just got my MP and got a 500 GIG Seagate from another vendor. I just noticed that its says SATA 3 in the USER BOOK and I have a SATA 2. Did I get the wrong drive???

It will work fine. They made a mistake when they stated that it is SATA 3 (doesn't exist). What they meant was SATA 300 or SATA2, like Hatter said.
Doesn't matter anyway. No single drive has a throughput of more than 150 anyway. SATA2 only shines when you have two or more drives in a striping RAID. Maybe in the future when they start making hybrid drives (drives with a disk and a large memory chip), SATA2 will start to be pushed.

To be honest, I've had 2 Lacie drives crash out of 2 bought. That's not a good track record for me.
Your best bet (I'm a computer professional, for what it's worth):
Get a hard drive case or enclosure that supports firewire 800 and put your own PC hard drive (SATA for example) 7200rpm or higher hard drive into it.
Let me explain a bit more. External hard drive manufacturers often put no-name hard drives into fancy cases to cut costs and that's how they make a profit. I've have had nothing but problems with with these types of drives. (Like Lacie) You are much better off getting some type of decent drive enclosure and getting your own GOOD hard drive. I would highly recommend Seagate, I have NEVER had a problem with a Seagate drive in 20 years of owning PCs and Macs. Western Digital is also a good brand (though I had 1 crash). These are the types of drives you would put in your Mac Pro. You want to get an SATA hard drive.
I have owned several external cases where the case electronics fried, but the hard drives were still in good shape. Take the hard drive out, put it into a new case you're good to go!
For video you want to make sure that your hard drive case supports Firewire 800! This is mandatory.
My personal favorite, (and I own 5 of these) is Vantec's NexStar hard drive enclosure. They accept any SATA 3.5" drive (I bought mine from a company called ComputerStop). I have yet to have a single problem with any of them. They are solid aluminum casing, you can literally throw them into your backback, drop them on the floor and your hard drive is fairly well protected from impact damage (at least you won't break the case with anything short of a sledgehammer). I am currently looking at getting a second one of these:

As far as the hard drive, you can get a Seagate Baracuda drive 1TB at 7200rpm drive for about $60. The case and hard drive together, maybe a few over $100 for the whole thing. With shipping, and tax figure about $150.
Don't let the price fool you. It will rock.
Story: I got an iOmega "raid" case with two Seagate drives in it and the iOemga case fried, but the hard drives were still good. Fortunately, they were in two removable trays. I put them into two "rocketfish" hard drive cases almost 3 years ago and I am still using them every day today.
Moral of this story: It's the quality of the hard drive that matters, not what case it's in.
Is it hard to set up?
Not at all. You put the hard drive into a tray, (with Vantec case), screw it in. It only goes in 1 way. Plug in a power cable to the drive. Slide the tray into the case (carefully, don't munch the power cable!) and screw it in place. You can literally do it in 10 minutes or less. There are, of course instructions, but if you are reasonably clever, you can literally see what plugs into what just by looking at it.
Sorry for the long reply, but I have a lot of experience with external drives and I hope this helps others.
Finally, when you make it to the big time you can spend $400, get yourself a firewire RAID enclosure and you can upgrade to 4 external hard drives in 1 enclosure. Figure $800 for that set up, but you can go up to 12 TB of drive space with that, or up to 3TB if you are running redundant discs. But that's a whole other ballgame...

Something like this would work. Pull out your hard drive and put it in the enclosure. Hook it up to a working computer and you should be able to see all your folders and files.

New 320GB Hard Drive isn't recognised.

I have a Compaq V6560 which came with a 80GB hard drive (Sata) & I bought a new 320 GB but when trying to re-install Windows 7 it won't recognise drive. Bios is useless as there's no 'advanced' option. The motherboard is a Quanta 30cc & bios is up-to-date I'm sure (F.59) so not sure what the problem is. If there's a capacity problem (i.e. this pc will only allow 250GB) is there a way around it as it seems a bit silly. Thanks.

There could be a couple of differnt things going on.
The 320 GB exceeds the limit imposed by HP. On the dv9000 series HP has imposed a limit, based on CPU manufacturer for the second bay (100GB for Intel & 160 GB for AMD) this is according to an HP chat responder's supervisor.
Your model may be using a SATA I controller that does not detect a SATA II drive (assuming your 320 is SATA II).

Apple Diagnostics Hard Drive Error

My new 2012 Mac Mini Server has been unstable since I purchased it in mid-December from Apple. I ran Apple Diagnostics twice this evening and received hard drive message- "ERROR-Reading took longer than average time-TEST FAILED-" . Apple telephone support is closed and so I'm not able put the question to them and wonder if anyone in the Community could shed some light on this. It is an SSD drive and has passed the Disk First Aid tests but got a failure on the Apple Support Diagnostics test.

I used the "Apple Server Diagnostics EFI 3xIIIv5 for Mac Mini Server (late 2012)" on the Apple Support Site.
The test done was "Hard Drive SATA (0,0) (Test1)-Full Read Test (1-4 Hours, DMA Full Read Scan) Reads the entire HD checking for slow-read failures."
The result was "ERROR-Reading took longer than the average time. -TEST FAILED-".
As I mentioned earlier, the disk passed Disk First Aid's verify and permissions tests.
The system has generated 8 Kernel Panic Reports and has experienced numerous freezes and spinning balls since an authorized Apple service center installed the OWC Mercury SSD, Yosemite and 1TB 2nd drive in the two week old 2012 Mac Mini Server from Apple's web site.. The most common spinning balls as of late are upon waking from sleep and when clicking on the Macintosh SSD boot disk icon on the desktop.
I've spent time with Apple's telephone support over the past few days. The boot drive was wiped and Yosemite reinstalled. No issues for about 5 hours and then back to it's old instable ways san Kernel Panics. BTW, the only software on the machine is the bundled apps and Apple's Final Cut Pro.
I have an appointment with the Apple Store Genius Bar on Tuesday. The other Apple certified service center where the drives were installed wanted $100 to test the system since the drives were purchased from OWC and not directly from them. So let's see what Apple says.

Will hard drive from a core duo macbook work in a core 2 duo macbook? (both white macbooks)

I want to replace my 1.83ghz core duo macbook.
Can I put the hard drive from this macbook into another macbook with a 2.4ghz core 2 duo processor?
The 1.83ghz is a white macbook. The 2.4ghz is also a white macbook.
Will it work okay this way?
I am trying to avoid doing a complete re-install.

While the two macbooks take the same hard drive(SATA), the core 2 duo will most likely have a larger hard drive(unless you replaced the original drive in your Core Duo).
Also, you cannot boot the Core 2 Duo computer with a drive from a Core Duo unless you reformat the drive and install OS X from the disks that came with the Core 2 Duo.

Need Help Quick Installing new Hard Drive

I have a MacBook Pro, an Intel Mac Mini, and a video iPod. I will be receiving a new 100GB 2.5- Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 7200RPM SATA Notebook Drive from FedEx today. What is the best way to go about not having to reinstall Mac OS & my applications, etc.?
I bought a 2.5 USB 2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure Kit from Best Buy, but it says it's for an ATA hard disk drive. I was hoping I could put the new drive in there & then use Carbon Copy Cloner. Then put the new drive into the MacBook. But am I right in thinking that the new hard drive (SATA) will not work in this ATA enclosure?
So, should I just do a full backup onto my iPod or Mac Mini, then install the new drive, install OS X, then do a restore?

you cannot put the sata HD in that enclosure.
From what I'm thinking is you could buy a firewire sata enclosure (I don't know if there is one available), put the new drive in it, and install the system software to that drive, and when it comes to the window that offer you to migrate and transfer, select it and point that to your old HD, and it will transfer all of your files and hopefully all your apps as well.
Or either you back up your old MacBook HD to iPod using USB 2.0 or using back up to Mac Mini with firewire protocol using Target Drive Mode, then do the custom installation on your new HD in your MacBook.
After that you can pull the data back to your new HD.
