Older iMac with slowness and choppy graphics

        Hello
I have a 2.1 GHz PowerPC G5 iMac with 1GB DDR2 SD RAM, and 10.4.11 loaded on it (well it's actually my aunt's)
here's some more specs, ATI RADEON X600 XT, VRAM 128 mo
basically applications load really slow, Safari is also slow (though it got a little better after clearing the cache and all the saved data like cookies), video is choppy across all platforms (quicktime, youtube, etc) and when using Skype (which is nearly unusuable due to choppiness) suddenly the whole system goes to sleep, in the middle of my conversations with family in europe!
what can I do to remedy this?
(1) install the latest OS? (will a seven year old iMac be able to handle it?
(2) add some RAM?
(3) update the graphics card? (see followup question to 1)
(4) drop to my knees and say a prayer?
Thanks
JC

Rund Disk Utility to verify/repair your drive(s).  Boot from your installer DVD to repair the boot drive.
Try doing smc and pram reset.
Boot in safe mode.  Then reboot normally.
See if any of these things improve your performance.

A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Videos played via internet are so slow and choppy, SLOW Firefox

Was wondering if anyone knew for sure the reason why videos/movie trailers played thru either Safari or Firefox are extremely slow and choppy on my G5 imac or G4 iBook laptop. Not sure if the outdated processors cant handle the flash embedded videos Youtube, Quicktime and other sites post, but it is really annoying not to be able to watch anything smoothly. Even if i let the entire video load (if it is a quicktime), then play it, it still is very choppy. The audio plays fine, but the video never keeps up. I have a 6mb DSL connection, so that cant be the problem. Any video I play via my iPod Touch (aside from flash videos it cant play) they are as smooth as can be (And that is via a wireless connection). Which makes me think it is a processor issue. Any thoughts?
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can remedy this situation? (aside from buying a new computer...)
PLUS, does anyone notice how slow Firefox is, or is it just me? Seems like even when i type in this form field, time lags as the letters show up. I have the latest version, and it is so slow. Switching tabs takes time... Reading and accessing RSS fields in the Feed Sidebar plug in is really slow...
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

QuickTime is designed to "drop" frames during playback when the machine can't keep up with the video data rate (audio continues normally). This may appear as a "stutter" during playback on an older machine.
It's not based on the Internet connection speed.
Apple movie trailers use the newer (2005) H.264 video codec and they demand a high CPU (Intel is best). You should get better performance on your G5 than on the G4.
Videos encoded using Flash will be equally difficult to view on older machines

  • Slow and choppy preview in CS6

    Hello!
I'm using After Effects to edit and things to my footage. I've found that it's pretty slow and preview is quite choppy. Also, RAM usage grows as I preview more, 4fps/24fps. In the end, the RAM usage is max, approximately 10Gb. I stop my preview but the RAM usage stays up. So, my question is, is the reason why my preview is slow and choppy, Cache is too small or too slow so the program loads the pieces to RAM, then slowly writes them Cache? I'm using 2 x Samsung F3 7200rpm 1TB drives in RAID0 for cache, previews and sometimes I render small pieces of video that. I think that the RAID0 -system is slightly too slow for cache. But there's a problem. Windows shows that HDD usage for my RAID0 is 0-2%. So, is it that my processor is too weak, footage disk is too slow (5400rpm 2TB), Cache too slow, wrong settings or something else? I've been thinking to breaking the RAID0 and replacing the cache disk with SSD. Would that help? And I would use one of those F3s to my "footage disks".
I'm using GeForce 660TI with After Effects and I don't find that it gives a lot more performance. I don't see any performance differences even when I've enable AE to use my GPU. So, is there some settings wrong?
RAM preview is as fast as normal, no speed gains, and still, no real time. Sometimes, when I RAM preview the footage and then preview it, as normal, it would play it in real time with audio (if selected) but sometimes when the RAM preview is done, it won't do that. It just "loses" the preview footage and it's like RAM preview didn't do anything.
And I want to make sure: Blue bar - from Cache, Green bar - previewed footage.
    My HDD settings:
    - 2 x Samsung F3 1TB RAID0 - Media Cache, Disk Cache, some of the footage (no performance differences if the footage is in this drive or other drive), Audio Previews, Video Previews ( mostly Premiere Pro ), Rendered files
    - 1 x Samsung F3 1TB - Boot drive, no footage, no files, just After Effects in it.
    - 1 x Samsung F4EG 2TB (5400rpm) - Pictures and footage.
    My PC (excluding drives)
    - Intel i7-870 (HT on)
    - 16GB RAM 1333MHz
    - Asus GeForce 660 TI
    - Windows 7 Home Edition 64bit.
If you could help me, I would be very thankful!
    Kind Regards
    Apollo

    Well, project info:
    1920 x 1080, 24fps, HDTV 1080 24 Preset.
One clip filmed with Nikon D800 (1080p@24), 16 seconds long
Added two shapes (very thin lines), one text, one  "Solid Layer" for vignetting, and then Nul for tracker which is for the lines and text.
All the Effects are in the videoclip: Sharpen, Levels, Broadcast Colors, SA Color Finesse 3, Unsharp Mask
I've used Numpad 0 almost all the time for preview. But is the space bar preview for previewing AFTER numpad 0 RAM-preview, because the RAM preview makes the green line over the composition. But if the most of the preview is done by NumPad 0, what's the meaning of the space button -preview in the After Effects when it seems to be a wrong way to preview.
Is there any way to improve this preview? More RAM, faster CPU?

  • Why are the animated Gifs in Firefox 4 moving so slow and choppy?

When ever I try and look at an animated gif in firefox 4, well, it's just slow and choppy. I google searched and haven't found and remedies to the situation.

    Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

  • Is it possible to get microsoft office on an older iMac with powerpc?

My girlfriends father recently purchased an older imac g5 ppc and is wondering if theres a way to get microsoft office on it? The version i have only works with the new intel processors.

The latest version available to run on PPC machines is Office 2008.  Either look for it on the Microsoft web page, or in eBay.

  • My Movies are slow and choppy on my HP Laptop from iTunes

My two movies i have purchased of iTunes are slow and choppy. Ihave a HP Pavilion G6 Notebook Laptop and need to know how to fix this

I posted this elsewhere, but it might help you:
I have a G5 2009. Magic mouse, and all latest updates etc.
I too had the Magic Mouse quit working properly. The clicks and scroll would function, but the pointer barely moved. This followed a period of pleasure in perfect performance. If the mouse was brought close to the top or back of the tower, the pointer worked. Move it a foot in front, and the pointer quit or went very sluggish.
I gave up looking for a solution, and went the tethered mouse route.
Over the holidays I spent some more time in finding a solution, same old same old.
Today I stumbled upon a SOLUTION!
I SET MY MOUSE ON TOP OF A BOOK, WITH A FOIL COVER, AND THE POINTER CAME TO LIFE.
I used an aluminum cookie sheet, and it worked. So I've made a mouse pad from some sandpapered thin aluminum flashing material, spray glued to a 1/4 inch thick square of ply.
Aluminum foil didn't do it for me, which was counterintuitive, but the flashing is perfect.
Of course, you could stay with a book, or book cover.
Give it a try! If it works, let me know.

  • I have a late 2009 iMac, with a Nvidia 9400 Graphics card.  I was wondering what my options are for upgrading.  I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp, so I need a card that is compatible.

I have a late 2009 iMac, with the default Nvidia 9400 Graphics card.
I was wondering what my options are for upgrading.  I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp, so I need a card that is compatible/has available drivers.
This is for gaming. On the lowest settings of "Call of Duty 4", I get about 100 FPS... Was hoping to be able to play on higher resolution w/o the fps lag.
I'm not good with the hardware part of computers at all, but know how to get around the OS.

In most cases the graphics cards in iMacs are Not upgradeable.  They are usually soldered to the logic board.  RAM is considered, along with harddrives, the only component that is upgradeable in an iMac, unlike in PC's.  So basically you would need to sell your unit and purchase an iMac with a more powerful graphics card.
    Hope this helps

  • I just purchased an IMac with lion and I tryed to install an old math program that is for winmac running systems. When I try to boot the cd it comes up with a notepad window with a bunch of weird symbols and codes but the program will not start up.

I just purchase my first IMac with lion and I was trying to install a math program I bought 6 years ago. When I went to boot it off the disk while following the program instructions a window popped up with a note pad format with symbols and codes but the program would not download or open. How do I get this program to work? It is a mac compatible program by the way.

Your Mac probably does not know with which application to open the file and is opening a file with a text editor that really needs to be opened by the application itself.  Try starting the application first, then use the File > open command to open the file.
As varjak paw comments, there isn't a "winmac" so that's not telling us anything.
Note that it is possible that software purchased 6 years ago may no longer run on your computer.  Once we know what it is we can help more.

  • I have an older imac with os10.4.11. Will it transfer images from newer digital camera using my iphoto when on the camera box it specifies a mac os of 10.5 or above?mo

I have an older imac with OSX 10.4.11. Will it transfer images  from newer digital cameras on to my computer via my iphoto program when the camera box states that the required mac OS is 10.5 or above or is that only if you wish to load the camera manufacturers own image processing program?

Which camera are you speaking about?
Why are you on such an old version on OS X?
With the information provided, I am inclined to say, no.

I can't see or get to my tools such as eraser's size or lasso's pixels or brushes in Editor. I am Victoria  <removed> on an IMAC with Mavericks and 12.1 in Photoshop. My email is< removed > and I live in CT so just in case you have any helpful advice. My cell. phone is < removed >.
    Personal info removed.

With the image displayed on the screen, the pixels are 1944 by 2592. By going to the units & rulers, the pixels were 300 by 72 screen with rules as inches, type as pt. and print & photo were listed as inches.
I did try the system preferences display but it didn't give me pixels. Unless you mean going under the Apple which didn't give me pixels under Display.

  • IMac with bootcamp and parallel boots into windows 7 but won't boot intoxc lion.

IMac with bootcamp and parallel boots into windows 7 but won't boot into Mac OS lion?

    Hi,
Thanks for your suggestion. Actually that was not the problem, because I had the Mcintosh drive set as my boot drive. The answer was that my Lion Os got somehow corrupted and I had to reinstalll Lion. This was all after I discussed the situation with the Apple Support people.

  • IMac  with SSD and Hard drive very slow startup time

I have a new mid 2011 iMac with a 250gb SSD drive and a 2TB drive. All are from Apple as BTO options. When I first used the iMac my typical startup time from the hardware check chime to desktop was typically 12 seconds. Something, somehow has been changed because now it takes over one minute to boot up from the SSD. After the chime I hear the fans running and also the 2tb drive.  After about 20 seconds I hear the hard drive spin down and then after another 20 seconds it starts up again. Once it starts up the boot up sequences contiunes and returns to the desktop. After this the iMac perfprms as normal. I have tried running disk utility from the recovery partition. I have also reinstalled Lion as well from the recovery partition and neither of these change the outcome.
When I first got the iMac I used time machine to restore from a previous machine into the 2tb partition and then went into advanced options in System preferences>Users&Groups to point to my home folder on the 2Tb drive rather than the default one on the SSD. That was working fine until I discovered software problems with both Preview and Textedit where they would not start up with this arangement. I then repointed my home folder to the default one on the SSD which cured this issue with these programmes leaving my data remaining on the 2Tb drive. Since doing this I have had the one minute boot up problem.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how I may overcome this problem and get my iMac back to starting up in twelve seconds from the SSD as it did before.  Any help would be appreciated on this topic.
    Thanks.

Where do you maintain your Home folder - on the SSD or on the HDD?
If you want to do a clean install (from scratch) then do the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Before you go to the extreme of the above would you do this:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Just in case your system slowness is due to something eating up CPU time. Oh, and if your system is brand new check the upper right corner of the menubar for a "dot" inside the Spotlight glass. This means Spotlight is indexing the drive. Until it finishes your system will be quite sluggish.
