One last question about upgrading my old computer

I  purchased an older HP computer P6243W
(it's all I can afford on my VA disability)
I'm looking to upgrade the video card buy purchasing a low priced PCIe Express X16 video card
I need a little more video power to play diablo 3
(please forgive my ignorance)
Question 1:  Will a PCIe Express 2.0 X16 work in the slot ?
Question 2: The intergraded video on the mother board uses ddr2 memory can the video card I purchase use gddr3 memory ?

Question 1:  Will a PCIe Express 2.0 X16 work in the slot ?  The PCI Express slots are backward compatible.  Therefore, the PCI Express 2.0 will work in PCI Express 1.0 slot.  Here are the System Requirements for the game.  The recommended video card is a HD 4870 or larger.
Question 2: The intergraded video on the mother board uses ddr2 memory can the video card I purchase use gddr3 memory ?  Once the dedicated video card is installed the Integrated Video is disabled.  Therefore, they are independent of one another.  The major conecern when buying a dedicated video card is, the wattage required for it to operate properly.  I believe that the power supply unit (PSU) in your computer may be 250W to 300W.  You can check the lable on the PSU to find the wattage.  It will be difficult to find a video card that will operate with that wattage.

    Hello Again Anthony!
"How does one delete an Apple ID?"
    You can't.
After you quit using an account, it's posts, will be archived. What that means is, that if there are no additional responses in the Threads they reside in, the Topics will get continually pushed down on the Topics list. After a certain amount of time, maybe 2 to 6 months, the Threads will be locked, so no responses can be entered. But the Threads will not disappear.
Threads in heavily trafficked Forums, may be archived more rapidly than those in areas, with less activity.
The Topics that you started using the account, will show your the Alias, in the Author field of a main forum page, but eventually, readers will have to keep going to the succeeding pages to view them.
If someone were to do a Discussions Search, using these parameters:

Restrict by Username: Your Old Alias
all of your posts, created since about 11/13/05, would be found.

  • One more question about upgrading HD

EVeryone was really helpful last time, I have one final question:
Does the name matter for the HD?
I have bought my HD, used SuperDuper and am actually already working off the new HD via Firewire.
Does it matter what I NAME the new Drive? When I used Super Duper I called it "New Startup". The current HD is called "Macintosh HD". Is this a problem?
    Thanks guys!

@Niel: How about localized chars (ä, ß, î, etc.) and such ones that may have a special technical meaning (like /, *, -) ?

  • One last question about apple tv!! viewing movies in movies folder

thanks to those who have responded to my previous questions.
thinking of buying an apple TV this weekend, but here's my last question (which I just thought of!)
i've got a collection of movies in various formats, usually .mov or .dv of home videos i've made in FCE and iMovie over the years, some of them several GB in size (oops!)
what's the best way of viewing these on the apple tv. for instance
    1. does apple TV let you look into your 'movies' folder in the home folder to play any movies it finds there
    2. will it play .dv or .mov files, or does it need to be a specific format
    3. i've noticed an 'export to apple tv' in quicktime pro, do i need to do this for all my movies before apple tv will play them. and after i do an 'export to apple tv' where do the files need to be? imported into itunes, or just sat in my 'movies' folder?
cheers, looking forward to visiting the apple store tomorrow!

    1. does apple TV let you look into your 'movies' folder in the home folder to play any movies it finds there.
No, the tv uses itunes for its source of movies.
    2. will it play .dv or .mov files, or does it need to be a specific format
DV, no. MOV, maybe. MOV is a container type not a compression type, if the MOV container has the correct compression formats in it then it will play. Movies for the tv need to be either mpeg4/2 or mpeg4/10 (H264/AVC)
    3. i've noticed an 'export to apple tv' in quicktime pro, do i need to do this for all my movies before apple tv will play them. and after i do an 'export to apple tv' where do the files need to be? imported into itunes, or just sat in my 'movies' folder?
Yes 'export to tv' will do the job for you. You need to be aware though that DV with the wrong field dominance will cause it a problem, and some cameras do use the wrong field dominance. It won't work with muxed files (mpeg2 for example) and on SD movies it can be a little wasteful on space. I've always used mpegstreamclip to convert from DV.
Of course from now on you'll be using FCE with this in mind and exporting accordingly.

  • One last question about capturing from tape

I have a box full of family VHS tapes that I will be capturing into the computer to digitally archive. However, I want to make sure I am doing it the best possible way. These are the two things most important to me:
    1. Quality
    2. Longevity
    1. Quality
I have a VHS/MiniDV JVC SR-VS30 deck connected via firewire into my 2014 iMac. I know that firewire is typically the best option when capturing DV footage into the computer. However, is this still true for VHS and other forms of old tape. I can hook anything up to this deck via composite/s-video in and go out through the firewire connection. However, I wasn't sure if firewire was the best coming from a VHS tape. I also have an old video capture card that has a straight s-video/composite input. Which would be more native to the VHS/analog tapes as far as keeping original quality and the best possible image?
When I use the JVC deck, some programs will capture the vhs tapes and others won't because they won't recognize unless I'm using the DV side. For example, FCPX recognizes the deck, but when I go to import unless it's a dv, it will say "no tape" and I cannot capture anything. iMovie will capture files as .DV. Quicktime will also recognize the deck and capture files as apple prores MOV files. When I compare the QT and iMovie, the QT files look better in my opinion, though I don't know if they truly are. The iMovie dv files have jagged edges like tv lines or something during quick movement and like others say about firewire it looks a little "milky" (though I know this isn't necessarily a bad thing). The QT clips don't necessarily look sharper, but they don't have the hideous jagged edges.
So my question before I start this large project is:
Which capture methods above would you use, or what else would you recommend for best quality?
    2. Longevity
Which file format would you recommend saving these files (or just keeping them as they are at capture) for long term storage? When I come back to these files in 10 years and need to convert them to something new, I want them to have the greatest chance of being compatible with whatever lies ahead. There are so many different file formats.
Many thanks for any help along this long process

I want to make sure I am doing it the best possible way.
I have done lots of that.
For maximum quality here is my procedure:  ADVC300 > iMovie 06 > iDVD 09/11.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, use the Grassvalley ADVC300 .  With the ADVC300 Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 11).
The ADVC300 has been discontinued by the manufacturer. The included software (which is not really necessary but does enhance performance) is not compatible with OS 10.7 or newer.  You can still find the ADVC300 for sale in a few outlets as well as eBay. It will sell between 50% and 100% ABOVE its retail price. Yes, it's that good.
If you can’t find the ADVC300, use the Grassvalley ADVC110.
I have a drawer full of analog-to-digital converters.   After using the Grass Valley ADVC300 I find nothing else acceptable.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source (VCR, Tivo, Satellite Receiver) and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09, 11, and 13 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.  (Also the latest iMovie CANNOT set Chapeters !)
After lots of experimenting I get the best results using OS 10.6, iMovie 06, and iDVD 09/11.  My movies look just like Hollywood!
My primary computer is a Mac Pro, so I just use one of the four hard drives and boot OS 10.6. You can also partition a single hard drive to achieve the same results.
This may seem like more trouble than you want to go through.  However, I find the superior quality to be well worth it.

  • One last question about building and formatting

When I am writing my DLT do I need to remove the .layout file and the Data.lay file? It will already be built but I will be using DVDSP3 to write the DLT. Are they removed automatically? The manual seems ambiguous about this.
Also I need to output in the DDP2.0 format (Its a DVD-9). I can't select this without choosing build and format. I have been testing by building to my desktop and testing on the Apple DVD player. If I choose build and format will it rebuild the project? And if it rebuilds is it possible for me to get something besides what I have been checking? I just want to make sure I write the same thing to the DLT that I have been checking.

you can also get ddp by just doing format as opposed to build and format. You can not open a ddp image in dvd player to test it, so there really is no use of building it to your hard drive. If you have already built the project and you have a video ts folder, then you can go under format and choose the dlt drive as your location and make sure you are referencing the folder with the videots in it.
there wont be anychanges from the video ts after it has been built, it is merely converting it into a ddp image.

  • Question about upgrading iTunes multiple computers with shared library

    Greetings,
I have a question about upgrading to the current version of iTunes.
Currently, my household uses 3 Mac computers (2 Powerbook 17in laptops and a Mack Mini). We are all (currently) on system 10.4.11 (with iTunes 9.2.1). Between the 3 computers we have a shared iTunes music and video library on a networked high capacity hard drive.
We recently purchased an iPad. In order to make it easy for updates and to use media from our iTunes shared library I decided that we should upgrade the systems on our home computers to Snow Leopard. I have ensured that all the computers have at lease 2 Gb of RAM and adequate hard drive space.
The only possible problem I see is that one of the Powerbook laptops uses the old Motorola processor. (This is one of the last Powerbooks to use that processor.) I don’t think this computer can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.
My question is, if I upgrade 2 of the computers (and iTunes in the process), will I still be able to access the shared iTunes library using the older computer with the older system and iTunes? Will the upgrade process change the iTunes library in such a way that the one older computer will no longer be able to properly access that library?
Are there any other problems I might encounter having a mixed system/iTunes environment?
    Thank you,
    Tim

    iantoole wrote:
Just a thought. Should I somehow open iTunes on MBP2 using MBP1's Library file??
both Macs can access the same library file, however, only one at a time !
to do that, you would ideally have the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) on the external. then, on one Mac after the other, launch iTunes while holding the option key, click on +choose library+ when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.
or, you could have two separate libraries and keep those in sync using third party tools such as Syncopation, TuneRanger or SuperSync.
for purchases from the iTunes store, you could set up _*Home Sharing*_ - it can be configured to automatically transfer new purchases to home shared libraries.
Can I create a script to have MBP1 always save the iTunes Library file on the shared hard drive?
    no need.

  • Canon HG20 One Last Question

Before I buy my Canon HG20, I have one last question.
I have seen warnings various places on the net about having a powerful enough computer to work with the data produced by this camera.
I have an iMac 24 2.16 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 MHz Memory, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 card, running OS X 10.5.6 with FCE 4.0.1.
    Am I OK?
    Thanks,
    Jim

That is a perfect machine for AVCHD editing. i use a puny Macbook and I have experienced no problems, everything is very fast. To work with AVCHD, you need an Intel processor and to have at least FCE4. 2GB of RAM is also a good idea to have (I assume that's what you meant you had when you said you had "2 MHz Memory"). From what you have said of your specs, I can't foresee any problems. If a Macbook can do it well, you can expect an iMac to do it amazingly.
Enjoy your new camcorder, I definitely am pleased with my HG21 (basically the same thing, just more memory and a viewfinder).

  • Question about upgrade and original iPhone

There might be other thread already, but have a question about upgrade to 3G.
I have the original iPhone and have upgraded to iPhone 3G.
The question is whether I can use the original iPhone indefinitely.
People at Apple store was telling me I can use the original iPhone (without the phone functionality) as long as I don't restore the firmware.
Is this true? What happens if Apple releases firmware in the future? Would this mean that I can only use this as long as machine doesn't require restore? I wanted to give it to one of my family members so she can use it as iPod so any info would be helpful ....

My understanding is the same as the Apple Store Employee.
If you try to update the software on an iphone with no service, I believe that it will be rendered useless.
It may be possible to swap the SIM card for software upgrades, etc., not sure.

  • Thanks for the idea. One last question..

Thanks for the replies, setting it to passive seemed to work
as I can now upload to my host. Just one last question, I've
searched the video knowledge base looking for a video on how to use
the 'Starter Pages' within Dreamweaver to no avail. When I try I
always get the same message: 'Dreamweaver stores templates in the
root folder of a site, but there are no sites defined. Please add a
site.' I have my site all layed out in Dreamweavers FTP, I can
upload and download with it and still Dreamweaver gives me this.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks once again all

Using FTP & RDS Server for your site means that you will
    not be able to use
DW's Templates or Library items. It's usually a very bad
    idea, to boot.

  • Several Questions about upgrading APEX

    Hello,
I a several questions about upgrading APEX.
I want to upgrade my APEX 2.0 to 2.2 and hopefully in a few month to 3.0.
Is there a How To about upgrading APEX?
What would happen to my applications?
Would there be any problems about the applications when the APEX version is upgraded to another version?
    Thank you,
    Tim

    Tim,
Yes there is (detailed) upgrade documentation provided with the upgrade itself, which you should definitely look through. The 2.2 and 2.2.1 releases are currently available here -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html
You applications will be 'upgraded' as part of the upgrade process (i.e. they will continue to work with the new software once the upgrade is complete).

1.Do we need shutdown / startup restrict the databaseNo - DBUA will do this automatically for you.
2.How can we move the files to the new locationYou can after the upgrade move the datafiles to wherever you want - use the ALTER DATABASE RENAME DATAFILE (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/statements_1004.htm#i2082829) command.
3.Can we change db_name of the databaseI do not believe this is possible with DBUA.
4.Can we use the old database as wellNo - the database will be upgraded by DBUA - there is no "old" database.

  • Upgrading an old computer

    Hi,
I'm not tech savvy at all when it comes to computers. I have a HP laptop that i got for christmas in 2008 and im wanting to know if it would be cheaper to upgrade my computer, like ram, memory, os, and such or just get a new computer all together. I don't do much on my computer except for sufing the internet, writing some papers, emails and facebook and I also like to play the sims 3 on it. The sims 3 runs extremely slow on my computer. It needs a system rating of like 3.7 to run at best preformance and my computer is currently rated at 3.1 It still runs on windows vista as well. Also the battery on my computer is shot!!! if i unplug it it will die in about 30 seconds. So in upgrading the computer I will also have to buy a new battery which I know is going to be another 100$ added to the tab. I'm just trying to find the most cost effective way to get a nice computer. Please Help!!!!!

    Hi nbd19990,
