One sql server agent job suspend

One sql server agent job--run full backup of one database is suspended from activity monitor.
How to find why it is suspended and troubleshoot?

"Suspended" is a common status for a thread.  It indicates the thread is waiting on an external resource, which backups often are
Check few things:
1. Database size, how much backup is completed from below command and location where backup files are being placed
select session_id,command, percent_complete
from sys.dm_exec_requests
If that on network than might be due to slow netword backup take some time.
2. Check job history, expected
completion time of backup job and also if any change in the I/O and CPU time for the SPID
3.Check wait type of suspended spid, SQL server and event viewer logs. If any I/O issue on the server. Like disk responding slowly that might be a cause of delay.

  • How to pass values to SQL server Agent Job which internally calls SSIS

    Hi,
    I have a requirement where i need to call remotely SSIS package from ASPX. After following MSDN form, I have creaed one SQL server agent job and calling that job from ASPX. I am ablt call SQL server agent job from ASPX. Only issue i am facing is: I need
    to pass 2 variables from ASPX to SQL Agent job so that from Job i can map the same to SSIS Package.
    I am using system SP (sp_start_job) for calling SQL server agent job as mentioned in MSDN forum.
    below is the code , which i am using to call SQL serve agent job.
    Code:
    SqlConnection
    jobConnection;
    SqlCommand jobCommand;
    SqlParameter jobReturnValue;
    SqlParameter jobParameter;
    int jobResult;
                    jobConnection =

                    jobCommand.CommandType =
    CommandType.StoredProcedure;
                    jobReturnValue =

    SqlDbType.Int);
                    jobReturnValue.Direction =

                    jobCommand.Parameters.Add(jobReturnValue);
                    jobParameter =

                    jobParameter.Direction =

                    jobConnection.Open();
                    jobCommand.ExecuteNonQuery();
                    jobResult = (

    break;
    Console.Read();

    "3-4 concurrent users are calling the SSIS package from ASPX page" this is not a proper design
    If the data is being ingested than it is likely that this concurrency will lead to one of the packages die
    What you shell do is to just queue the data ingress/processing.
    In general, again, packages should not be called from ASP web pages, SSIS is ETL-server side technology there is nothing signalling back to the user whether it was successful. The proper way is to write a REST service or alike.

  • Error while executing SSIS package which contains Script component through SQL Server Agent Job

    Hello All,
    I have written one SSIS 2012 package which is fetching records from CSV and put it into staging DB and from staging DB , using SSIS script component task, I am inserting data into Dynamics CRM. So far it is working fine when

    That being said, often SSIS jobs require a proxy to be runnable and this is how you make one up

  • Excel Import Fails in SQL Server Agent Job but not when executed in BIDS

    We have a SQL Server agent job that has ran successfully for the past 6 months.  It started failing about a week ago.  I don't believe anyone installed anything on the server.  The proxy account used to run the job is an admin on the server.
    I've tried everything I can think of or that I found on searches.  I even changed the connection manager from an Excel source to using an Microsoft office 12.0 Access Database Engine OLEDB connection and it still runs in BIDs and not as an agent job.
    I also setup my LANID as a proxy account to see if the job would run (checking security) -- and it fails with the same error.   I also made sure the path is
    \\server\share rather than a drive letter.   Any ideas?
    The package is executed in 32 bit mode.  The package still runs fine in BIDS (where BIDs is opened on the server) but fails in the SQL Agent job with:

    I logged on to the server with the account that the SQL Agent runs under and ran the following from a command
    line to execute the package:
    "D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn\DTEXEC.exe" /FILE
    "\"K:\SSIS\xxxxxx\xxxxx.dtsx\"" /CHECKPOINTING OFF
    /REPORTING EWCDI  /X86
    I wanted to see if it was a security issue with the agent account account - but
    this ran fine.
    I then updated the SQL Agent job to use an operating system command instead
    of a SSIS package on the job step.  This fails...
    The issue is definately with the SQL Server Agent

  • SSIS package fails under SQL Server Agent job

    Hi All
    I have designed a SSIS package to encrypt a file using Cipher (EFS) it works fine from BIDS & Package Execution Utility.
    But SQL Server Agent job is failing to do this. I am getting the error as
    " In executing C:\Windows\System32\Cipher.exe /e /a C:\Test.txt at "",The Process Exit code was 1 while the expected was 0."
    Please help me.
    Thanks

    Two things that usually come to mind when this happens from BIDS locally to the SQL Agent are
    1. Security is not
    adequate under the SQL Agent Service Account
    Rule the security problem out by setting up a proxy account that you know ahs security to run the needed tasks in the package.  Either that or give the service account the permissions needed.
    2. 32bit BIDS development and running under a 64bit Platform in your SSIS installation
    This can be fixed by selecting run in 32bit more or running the package with the 32bit installed version of DTEXEC found in the Program Files (x86) folder where you installed tools.
    Next, setup logging in the package so you get a more detailed error message.  Event handlers on the tasks will be much more detailed using the OnError event.  you can write that to either a flat file with a data flow in the event handler or simply
    insert the event into a table using the ? as the parms.  If you need assistance setting that up, here are basic steps for a SQL Server table
    1) Select the task and click the event handler tab in BIDS
    2) Select OnError event handler in the list
    3) Click the enable link and drag a Execute TSQL Task over to the window
    4) Create a table in your SQL Server database (create one so you don't litter your user DBs if needed)
    5) Open the task and add the connection as needed.  Then add this statement
    INSERT INTO dbo.TableYouCreated
    (PackageName, SourceName, EventInfo)
    VALUES (?,?,?)
     6) Go to parameter mappings and add 4 new mappings as following
    System::PackageName
    Input
    nvarchar
    0
    System::SourceName
    Input
    nvarchar
    1
    System::ErrorDescription
    Input
    nvarchar
    2
    Save and reimport the package and then the event of the errors should insert into the table in detail

  • SQL Server Agent job between 2 instances fails with Error 18456 - Login Failed for user

    Hi,
    SQL Server version: 2012 EE
    OS: Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise
    In my server, i have 2 instances, and I am trying to configure a SQL Server Agent job to query one table in Instance A, and insert some modified data in Instance B, both in the same server.
    When i execute the job in instance A, i get the following error:
    Executed as user: NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT. Login Failed for user "NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT". [SQLSTATE 28000] (Error 18456). The step failed.
    I have already configure instance A as Master and disabled encryption, by changing the parameter MsxEncryptChannelOptions to 0 in regedit. I've also made my target instance (instance B) as a Target.
    What am i missing?
    Thanks for your attention and pacience

    Hello,
    The NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT (virtual) account is not available on the other as you just mentioned. That is the reason for the login
    failed error. Try using a Windows login as the
    SQL Server Agent service account in both servers, the same Windows login (not a virtual account), and run jobs as the “sa” account.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345578.aspx
    You can also try a proxy account.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms190698(v=SQL.105).aspx
    Hope this helps.

  • How to run a SQL Server Agent job step on certain days/frequency

    I've a SQL Server Agent job. One of the requirement is that a particular step should only run on certain frequency i.e. Certain Date and time. Any suggestions how can that be done?
    GBM

    yes
    1. Make first step as a Transact SQL step. Keep command as below
    IF DAY(GETDATE()) = <Your date value>
    AND DATEPART(hh,GETDATE()) = <your time hour)
    AND DATEPART(minute,GETDATE()) = <your time minute)
    SELECT 1
    ELSE
    RAISERROR 'Job cant be run at this time'
    Then for job step properties set the following properties in advanced tab
    This would make sure it will quit the job without executing other core steps untill it reaches the required day and time
    You can add more conditions in IF based on requirement like if you want time to be on certain second or month to be particular value etc

  • SQL Server Agent Job

    I want to learn how to create a SQL Server Agent Job. After I googled it, I see that it can be found under Databases under Object Explorer, But I don't see that option. Can someone tell me where is it or how can i create one? I also need to

  • SQL Server Agent Job steps

    I've searched and can't find the answer to this, would like to post it in the appropriate forum. (Using SQL Server 2008R2) I'm having trouble with a long string of email addresses in one of my SQL Server Agent Jobs. I'd like to edit it for readability but
    can't find a way to do it. Currently smashing all the addresses together works,  The job executes and returns the correct data and sends the desired emails, but if I try a continuation character it sends emails to the first person on the list, then no
    others.
    It works fine when all the email addresses have to be in one long string with no spaces. (Example below) Hard to read/edit.
    ,@recipients ='[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected];[email protected]'

    Prashanth, This runs every two hours five days a week for the last two years. The only problem I have with it is that the line of email addresses is difficult to read and edit when employees leave and are replaced.
    Thanks for looking at this for me - We like it because it's easy for smart phone users to read when they're out and about. EDITED TO ADD: Although this interface wraps the address line, in Microsoft's SQ: Server Agent, the line just stretches off to the
    right apparently infinitely.  DietSquirt

  • SQL SERVER AGENT job dependent on another job

    Hi
    I have 2 Sql Server Agent jobs that run on a daily basis.
    One which is run first but is dependant on another job completing.
    The secone runs every 30 mins between 9:00am to 7:00pm.
    If my first Job hasn't run but the 2nd job does start running the 2nd job will fail.
    Is there away with SQL servent agent where if my first Job hasn't run  then don't run the 2nd job?
    Regards

    Hi aivoryuk,
    According to your description, if you set one job is dependent on another job, when the first job does not run or execute failed, then the second job will not run. I recommend you use two steps to instead of this two jobs. In step Advanced page, we can set
    that the first job execute successfully then go to the next step. Or else, it will quit the job and report a failure.
    The other way is that we create new job with the same schedule as the second job , in this job , we can check the first job status with the sp_help_job stored procedure, then you can use sp_start_job to Start
     the second job. For more information, you can review the following post.

  • Can't launch executable from SQL Server Agent Job

    I'm trying to launch an .exe from SQL Server Agent Job and basically nothing happens. I created a job, with 1 step, type is Operating System (CmdExec), run as sql agent service account, and in the command box I typed "start notepad" (no quotes). The job owner is set to administrator. I manually start the job, it processes successfully yet notepad does not launch. I've tried with other .exe's and result is the same. Any advice? Thanks!

    I tried several things and not just with notepad, I tried a couple other small executables. I've tried:
    c:\notepad       --(I copied it to c:\ thinking it maybe it's not finding the file.)
    c:\notepad.exe
    notepad.exe
    start notepad
    start notepad.exe
    and also launching it from a batch file.
    If I use just notepad the job hangs saying it's executing and I have to stop it. If I use start notepad it comes back as executed but actually nothing happens, ie, notepad does not launch. I've tried different security settings within SQL Server (ie assigning all available default roles to the login at the same time and individually one at a time) with identical results. SQL Server is loging in with local administrator priviledges and so is SQL Server Agent. My settings are the default installation settings (for Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005) except that I read the BOL page "Configuring SQL Server Agent" which indicates the permissions needed for the following:
    Adjust memory quotas for a process
    Act as part of the operating system
    Bypass traverse checking
    Log on as a batch job
    Log on as a service
    Replace a process level token
    And they have been set. Still the same. BTW, I get the same result when trying to launch the file using xp_cmdshell with all the variations, and the proxy account for xp_cmdshell has been set to a login with administrator priviledges....
    I think it's some security setting in Windows Server, if only because I think I've tried all the settings within SQL Server...
    BTW, also, nothing is setup for Proxies under the SQL Server Agent node, but I don't think I should need to if I'm using the administrator level login...

  • SQL Server Agent Job Scheduler- Set time less than 10 seconds

    Hi,
    Could any one please let me know how to change the SQL server agent Job scheduler time to less than 10 secs?
    I wan to schedule a SSIS package run for every 5 secs.
    Thanks..

    Be careful, it is a bad idea to blindly just issue a new package run without knowing whether the previous package ended.
    It may lead to locking/dead-locking.
    Now re the Agent: the seconds are not exposed at all, why you say 10?
    But, there is a way, not through the UI, explained there:http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5569415/is-there-a-way-to-set-a-sql-server-job-scheduled-to-run-every-30-seconds + http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/Administration/sqlserverjobscheduling/2288/
    PS you can have it every sec

  • Database Mail Fails For SQL Server Agent Jobs / Maintenace plans - Why ?

    Database Mail Fails For SQL Server Agent Jobs / Maintenace plans - Why ?
    This has been a very common question I have seen relatedt to Database mail and I thought will post here so if you run into this issue, it could be due to one of the following and also have mentioned below how to get around them. Bottom line is datbase mail works fine with SQL Agent jobs and maintenace plans in SP1 on all platforms.
    1. If you see this on 64 bit platform and on RTM build, this is a bug that is addressed in SP1.
    2. If you see the below error message, it is known issue and this is because of design that requires SQL Agent to restart, if SQL Agent was started before enabling databasemail and setting a new profile. We are evaluating to change this design of not requiring to restart agent for our future release.
    Re: 264] An attempt was made to send an email when no email session has been established
    This problem will go away after restarting SQL Server Agent in this case. Thanks,

    This may be related to the fact that DBMail, by default, shuts itself down after 10 minutes of inactivty.  If the mail service isn't running, you won't be able to queue up any mail messages.
    There may be a built-in mechanism for addressing this problem, but I found that I can detect this situation and start the mail listener before sending db mail.  I use the following in stored procs that need to send email.
    You could increase the inactivity period for db mail shutdown from 600 seconds to some larger value.  It might not make sense to do so, since shutting it down releases its resources back to teh system; if your SQL server only sneds mail infrequently, it might be better to start the mail listener on demand.  Someone with more experience than I might want to add their two cents' worth.  :-)
    /* Check the mail engine. Start the service if is is stopped         */
    /* -- the DB Mail engine shuts down after 10 minutes (of inactivity) */
    /* -- this setting can be changed, but we probably don't need to.    */
    DECLARE @rc INT
    IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM msdb.sys.service_queues
                   WHERE name = N'ExternalMailQueue' AND is_receive_enabled = 1)
        EXEC @rc = msdb.dbo.sysmail_start_sp
        -- TODO: add handling and logging for any engine start issues
