Open browser window function with additional attributes/behaviors

Just let me say, writing JavaScript is not my forte. Having said that I am comfortable using JavaScript functions.
I have a need for a single JavaScript function that does several things. The script will be called from within a Captivate project. (If you are familiar with Captivate, you know that the JavaScript call needs to be a single string with no spaces or breaks.)
The script will be used as a Captivate “click box” behavior to open a URL in a window on top of the main (Captivate) project. There may be multiple click boxes present at the same time (in the Captivate Project).
Here is what the script needs to do:
1)    Open a new browser window of a specific size with specific browser attributes. (This is the easy part, like MM_openBrWindow().)
2)    The (new) window (focus) needs to always stay on top of the parent window until it is closed. (The new window will always be smaller than the parent window that spawned it and will always float in front of it.)
3)    If other (different) URLs are called, they replace the contents of the new window. (There shouldn’t be multiple windows floating above the main, parent window.)
I don’t like having to take this kind of control of the browser away from the user, but this content is part of a e-Learning course and needs to restrict the user while they are in the lesson.
If anyone has any pointers to tutorials or have already worked with this type of script, I'd like to hear from you. I have had some success doing this using a standard HTML page using separate functions, but combining the functionality in a single script has eluded me.
Thank you for your time,
TPK

Thank you David,
This is very close to what I need. When I test this on a standard HTML page it works flawlessly. It is an excellent bit of work.
When I try in integrate it into a Captivate 3 project using a "click box behavior" to call the JavaScript, it runs into a little trouble. The main part of the script works just fine: It is the “return document.MM_returnValue” piece that Captivate has problems.
For example:
When I use the JavaScript in a standard HTML page the URL string looks like this:
<a href="http://www.mywebsite.com" title="MyTest Window" onclick="dpSmartLink(this.href,'newWin',800,600,'z:z','sc');return document.MM_returnValue">Test link</a>
In Captivate I have to structure the call a little different. I can't use the href= piece, so I that part into the first parameter.
My Steps:
I embed the actual function in the HTML page used as a shell for the swf file.
In the Captivate Project file, on the slide where I want to call this function, I:
Create a click box.
For action I select “JavaScript”. (When the user clicks the "click box", execute javascript.)
The script call is written like this:
javascript:dpSmartLink('http://www.mywebsite.com','newWin',800,600,'z:z','sc');return document.MM_returnValue;
What I get is a script error that refers to:
Error: ‘return’ statement outside of function
Code: 0
I seem to be missing a means to close the cunction so that the script appears to be one iten rather than two separate items. (I'll be 'fiddling' with it to see if I am missing something simple and am just not seeing it.)
I realize that this script was not created with Captivate in mind, and that Captivate imposes rather severe restrictions on what can be called using Javascript.
Do you have any ideas as to how I might script the return statement so that it is within the parentheses given what I have described (above)?
On another note, I think this will be a very nice addition to LMS courseware that I develop using standard HTML and Javascript. Thank you again for this fine script.

  • Open Browser Window Text Link??

    Two questions:
    1) Can I make a text link use the open browser window function, if so how? Here is the attempt that has failed:
    <div class="style11" id="apDiv47" onfocus="MM_openBrWindow('BWPages/BW1002.html','','width=325,height=546')">#1002</div>
    2) How to properly code the open browser window function, so that when I use an image as the link the cursor becomes a hand instead of an arrow? Here is what I have:
    <img src="images/cards/Icons/card1002.jpg" alt="Motif_2" width="135" height="193" border="0" onclick="MM_openBrWindow('BWPages/BW1002.html','','width=325,height=546')" />

  • A:hover with "open browser window" behavior?

    Hi,
Is it possible to make a text link follow the a:hover style (CSS?) with the behavior of "open browser window"?
I've been using the "OnClick" option (for behaviors), but the cursor doesn't turn into the little hand symbol so I feel like people won't know that you can click on it.  If I could make it change color like it does when it is a direct link, or if i could make the hand symbol appear, that would be great.
    Thank you in advance!!

We'd need to see your code but I'm guessing you did not highlight the link text and make it a null link.

  • Trouble with the Open Browser Window behavior

I have a page with thumbnail images. I want to be able to
click the thumbnail and have a new window open with just that image
in the window. If I don't assign a link to the thumbnail, and
select the Open Browser Window behavior, the only 3 options for
when to open the window are onLoad, onError, or onAbort. I want it
to be opened onClick. If I do assign a link to the image, and then
select the Open Browser Window behavior, it gives me the option to
open the window onClick. However, when I test it, it opens 2 new
windows - the one I want, and the one that is the link that I
    assigned to the image.
I can't figure this out! Any help would be greatly
    appreciated.
    Sam

You must always do the following when applying behaviors to
    images:
    1. Assign a link to the image first, even if it is a null
    link. Use the
    Property inspector to do this.
    2. Click on the image in Design view, then click on the
    <a> tag that you
see on the Tag inspector bar at the bottom of the document
    pane so that the
    anchor tag is selected.
    3. Now apply your behavior.
You *can* usually truncate this process as follows -
    1. Select the image in Design view and make sure that
    <img> is selected on
    the Tag selector bar.
    2. Apply the behavior.
    3. Use the behavior panel to set the event desired to
    <A> onClick, or <A>
onMouseOver, or any of the appropriate "<A>" containing
    items in the list.

  • Open browser window behavior in Mac not working right

I am simply selecting my text in my html document and then selecting "Open Browser Window" from the Behaviors panel.  I then put in the info for the file I want it to open along with the size, etc...
When I test it in the browser (Safari) the link works but the rollover features don't show ... it doesn't show as a link in the browser window.  I followed the tutorial exactly and the instructor's browser showed the link as a rollover.  It's driving me a bit crazy.
I'm using CS5 on the latest version on Mac OS (Snow Leopard).
I can put up an example if needed.
Thanks so much for any assistance.

  • Open Browser Window behavior not working in IE6 Win

Using DW 8 on Mac and can't get this Open Browser Window
behavior to work in IE 6 on a Windows machine. Any
    suggestions?

This page is a GoLive page, and it throws a js error when it
    loads because
of some of the GoLive code you have left therein.
I see that link as orange in IE6. And when you click on the
    link, you throw
another js error, because the function (MM_openBrWindow) is
    not defined on
the page - which is what causes the link to open in a
    full-size browser
window. If it were not for that js error, you would get TWO
    windows opening
since you have BOTH a link and the behavior, and the behavior
    is not
'killed' with a return false, like this -
    <a href="aptapp.html" class="override"
    onClick="MM_openBrWindow('aptapp.html','QualifyforFREEMOVE','scrollbars=yes,width=760,hei ght=800');return

  • Help with Open Browser Window

I built a site named greenscapepump.com. I used the behavior
"Open Browser Window" that allows a photo to be viewed in a smaller
window. I have it set up to double-click the photo name to go to
the browser window. It works on some computers but not others. I
used the same behavior on other pages in the same web site and it
    is working on all computers.
The three pages under the menu "Portfolio" are: Architectural
Fountains, Waterfalls and Streambeds, and Floating Fountains, are
the pages that have problems with this behavior on some computers.
Is this an individual computer problem, or do I need to do
something in Dreamweaver to fix it?

OMG - the code on the architecturalfountains page is a horror
Why do you need to use doubleclick.... most users are
    accustomed to clicking
on a link wait for something to happen....
Also, the code for that dropdown is massive... are you really
    committed to
    that menu?
The validator found quite a few errors on that particular
    page - I didn't
test each page (that's up to you :) these errors aren't
    helping with your
page load also - one of the pages (can't recall which now)
    just kept trying
to load and never did stop... try fixing the errors (some
    more important
than others to the well being of your page) and then see
    where you are at
with your pages... I'd also suggest changing the
    'doubleclick' to just the
one click - really no need for anything else.

  • Open Browser Window behavior not working

Just getting started with DW from GL - have successfully imported a few sites into DW from GL and am having trouble getting the Open Browser Window behavior to work. Worked fine in GL, code is similar but different. Have tried different things and am out of ideas. I'm not too code-savy.
    Here's where the non-working behaviors/actions are: http://www.philasecurities.com/data/luncheon.html
When a user clicks on the red "more..." links they should open a new browser window like they do in the "Click
    here for previous years..." section.
    Any help would be appreciated!

bregent, thanks for your input but unfortunately most of that's greek to me. Could you either supply me with sample code for one of these links or explain what I'm doing wrong in the design mode? I've followed DW instructions and as far as I can tell I'm doing what I'm supposed to in the behaviors tag inspector. Not sure about some of the settings I should have when browsing for the linked file to open in the new browser window. What should the parameters be set to? What should the relative link be set to, document or site root? How about some of the other options like Select file name from: data sources, server, site root? I've messed with them and tried different combinations but nothings working for me.

  • Question about Behaviors and Open Browser Window

    First my link:
    http://www.progressity.com/portfolio.htm
I've created a Portfolio section in my web site. When you
click on one of the thumbnails you get a small browser window
(setup with Behaviors/Open Browser Window size settings) with a
link to visit the site. The problem is in visiting the actual site
the browser window is locked to the smaller size. What am I
missing? I didn't set a behavior for the "visit site" link. But
it's defaulting to the same size.

You didn't do anything wrong. If your browser window is a
    certain size, then
if you click on a link in it, it will stay that size. What
    you might want to
do is enable the scrollbars and resizing for the web site New
    Browser
Windows so when it opens small the user can enlarge the
    window. Though you
probably want the toolbars and everything to show so they can
    actually
    navigate.

  • Open Browser Window Behavior

I am using the Open Browser Window behavior. When test on my
machine, it works fine in IE, Safari, Firefox and Navigator. When I
upload to my test server it does not open at the correct size in IE
7 (did not test earlier versions) and Safari 3. In both browsers,
the new window is tiny, whereas I am specifying 460 wide and 490
    high.
The code for this behavior is: <li>Chairman - John
    Andrews (<a href="#"
    onclick="MM_openBrWindow('Bios&amp;Roles/BioJMA.html','BioJMA','width=460,height=490')">b io</a>)</li>
    The page is at:
    http://www.collabracom.com/Home-Test8/About/Index.html#
I have the behavior inside a Tabbed Panel. The links for this
behavior on on the "Leadership" tab.
    John

My pet peeve - a website in a single page.
It works fine for me in IE7. Once I found the tab.

  • Open Browser Window Behavior - Why is hover cursor and I-beam vs finger?

Why do links that use the Open Browser Window Behavior create
an I-Beam when one mouses over while all other links display the
finger icon? The I-Beam is hard to see and not the "normal" thing a
visitor to a site expects to see when hovering on a link. Anybody
    know what this is about?
I am attaching the code. At least I think I am...
And here is a page in a site I am working on that shows this
    phenomenon:
    Click
    here.
The link I am referring to is in the body: "Let's try a Notes
    Popup here"
    Thanks!

Your A tag is missing its href atrribute, which in this case
    should be
"popuptest_1.html" and then add ";return false;" after the
    openBrWindow
    call, so this:
    <a style=""
    onclick="MM_openBrWindow('popuptest_1.html','','resizable=yes,width=300,height=200')">Let
    try a Notes Popup here.</a>
    becomes this:
    <a style="" href="popuptest_1.html"
    onclick="MM_openBrWindow('popuptest_1.html','','resizable=yes,width=300,height=200');retu rn
    false">Let's try a Notes Popup here.</a>

  • Ie7 open browser window behavior problem

I'm stuck! I'm using the open browser window behavior to have
a click through to a small photo on my site. I have defined the
dimensions and it works fine in firefox but in ie7 the browser
window is too wide - wider than the size I defined...
    Can anyone help?
You can see the problem is you visit
    http://www.dizigniz.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/anastasia/anastasia.htm#
and click on the 'view' button under 'Swatches'

If you are opening an image directly in the browser, you will
    never succeed
in doing this. Is that what you are doing? If so, then
    investigate the use
    of
    http://www.valleywebdesigns.com
    ---> JustSo Picture Window. I couldn't
    do without it!

  • JS, Open Browser Window

I have rewritten my site in Dreamweaver because I thought
this was a problem with the export from Go Live.
When I tell a link to open in a new browser window it works
but the older window also update to the linked page. This pretty
much defeats the purpose of it opening another browser window.
The link that is the problem is the link to "
    http://www.yourmaclifeshow.com"
It's the only one I have put in so far since it doesn't seem to
    work properly.

You might also mention the need to apply this behavior to the
    <a> tag
surrounding the <img>. It's a common mistake, and it
    leads to other
    undesirable effects.
